Minnesota Senate hopeful warns threat level rising amid rash of Somali gang crime, terror plot

The Republican Senate nominee in Minnesota is sounding the alarm about crime levels in the state amid a wave of Somali gang violence and a foiled terror plot by an American born to Somali parents.
«I hear a lot of concerns from Minnesotans on the campaign trail about crime, and no matter what form that crime takes, Minnesotans know that they feel under a level of threat that has increased lately here in Minnesota, and in the last week and just today,» Michele Tafoya, running as a Republican against Minnesota’s Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, told Digital on Wednesday. «We saw the arrest of an 18-year-old Somali American citizen to Somali parents arrested for a terrorist — planning a terrorist attack — at the Mall of America during a Hmong celebration.»
The suspect in that alleged terror plot is 18-year-old Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud, born in the United States to Somali nationals who are naturalized American citizens, law enforcement sources told Digital. Federal court documents said that Mohamud was arrested after purchasing an AK-47-style rifle, magazines and ammunition from an undercover FBI agent whom he believed to be a loyal ISIS member.
MALL OF AMERICA TERROR PLOT THWARTED, SUSPECTED ISIS SYMPATHIZER ARRESTED, FBI ANNOUNCES
The FBI alleges Mohamud had digital communications beginning in December 2024 with a confidential human source he believed was a member of al-Shabaab, a Somali Islamist terror group and offshoot of ISIS.
«I can’t wait until I kill kuffar man. October 24 is the day insha Allah,» one of the messages said. «Kuffar» is a term used to refer to non-Muslims, and «insha Allah» means «God willing.»
The Hmong people are indigenous to Southeast Asia and boast a relatively large population in the United States.
«We have a large Hmong community here in Minnesota as well, and he basically stated that he wanted to take out anyone who was not a Muslim. He also noted that the Mall of America is owned by people who are Jewish,» Tafoya said. «And so this was his plan, and thank goodness for the FBI in Minneapolis here and local law enforcement for catching onto this plan and derailing it well in advance. This is a guy who has pledged his allegiance to ISIS. Again, he is of Somalian descent and terror is alive and well and thank God we averted this massive crisis.»
TAFOYA MAKES ‘COMMON SENSE’ PITCH TO DISAFFECTED DEMOCRATS AS SHE VOWS TO FIGHT MINNESOTA’S ‘SOCIALIST LURCH’
The thwarted plot follows a rash of gang violence attributed to Somalis by law enforcement in the suburbs of Minneapolis.
Police in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, said a shooting during the local high school’s homecoming celebration last week was carried out by rival Somali gangs. Similarly, a shooting at a Bloomington, Minnesota, gas station over the weekend was attributed to Somali gangs. In the latter incident, more than 100 rounds of ammunition were fired.
«And we have had Somali-related — Somali gang-related — attacks here locally in our suburbs at a high school football game during homecoming, at a Catholic Church parking lot, at a gas station, and this is all just really started to peak here in the last couple of weeks. So it’s undeniable. Our law enforcement here are calling it out as the product of Somali gang violence, and we’ve got to identify it, and we have to find a way to deal with it.»
Tafoya also mentioned the Somali fraud scandals have enveloped Minnesota this year.
BILL MAHER RIPS IMMIGRANTS WHO REFUSE TO ADAPT, SAYS AMERICAN VALUES ARE ‘NOT NEGOTIABLE’
«I don’t know how you can legislate that assimilation, but we simply cannot tolerate the level of crime,» she said. «We’ve seen it with fraud here. It’s in the paperwork that the Feeding Our Future fraud was largely … in terms of percentage, probably 98%, Somali people involved in that fraud,» she said.
«What I do think is any guests of this country who commits crime should be sent home with no pathway back,» she said. «If you’re coming here to be a guest of this country or to live in this country you cannot break our laws, and if you’re an American, you cannot break our laws, period.»
Tafoya is not against immigration, noting that she’s the granddaughter of immigrants, and she has an adoptive Colombian daughter who is as patriotic as they come.
But she’s not going to stop in her mission to battle crime, no matter the background of the criminals, she said. She plans to be an «equal opportunity pain in the a–» to all of them, specifically mentioning corrupt politicians.
«I’m going to represent Minnesotans and Americans, and so there’s, there’s not going to be any limit on the way that I see crime. Crime is crime, and it’s going to be committed by a wide variety of people, and they all need to be held accountable and accountability has been in short supply here in Minnesota.

Minnesota official’s voter guide message on Somali TV triggers viral backlash: ‘Not an accident’

The election system in Minnesota is facing scrutiny on social media after a clip of a state official speaking to Somali voters reignited concerns about election integrity in the state.
«If you’re already registered to vote, you don’t need to bring anything with you,» said Minnesota voter outreach director Melanie Hazelip on Somali TV.
«You just show up to your early voting location, which is usually the county office or City Hall. Minneapolis and the bigger jurisdictions have a lot of extra places where you can go, like a lot of libraries or community centers. As long as you’re registered to vote, you don’t need to bring anything with you. If you’re not registered to vote…you still have options. If you have a Minnesota ID that is updated, that’s all you need to bring with you. If you don’t have that, there is a list of documents on our website that you can find. You still have options to get registered same day.»
While Hazelip’s comments were in accordance with the laws on the books, they caused outrage on social media after being posted by conservative influencer End Wokeness, as the post racked up almost a million views with users making the case that the system is too lax.
TRUMP SCORES SUPREME COURT WIN IN ELECTION INTEGRITY FIGHT AS STATES GAIN NEW VOTER ROLL TOOL
«A Minnesota election official just went on Somali TV and walked viewers through how to same-day register and vote using a Minnesota state ID,» retired Navy intelligence officer Phillip C. Parrish posted on X. «Minnesota hands out those IDs to non-citizens with no citizenship marking. Vouching lets one registered voter clear up to eight others on an oath. Citizenship is required by law. Real-time proof is not. The same state that lost hundreds of millions to documented fraud in childcare, nutrition, and Medicaid programs is now advertising the lowest-friction path to the ballot on community TV. Affirm you’re a citizen. Cast the vote. Get investigated later—if at all. This is how the system is built. It is not an accident.»
Federalist Society co-founder David McIntosh wrote on X, «Democrats are on a mission to tell every non-citizen how they can get away with voting in our elections.
ELECTION CRIME ARRESTS KEEP PILING UP AS DEMS INSIST IT ‘JUST DOESN’T HAPPEN’
«How is this not election interference?» He added.
«Nothing to see here, I’m sure,» Red Ax Strategies president Matthew Brodsky posted on X.
«This is why passing the SAVE America Act is crucial,» conservative commentator Riley Gaines posted on X.
In a statement to Digital, the Minnesota Secretary of State’s office said it «provides information and resources on Minnesota election laws to hundreds of nonpartisan community groups every year as a part of our regular voter engagement efforts.»
«Recently, our voter outreach director spoke with a local news outlet and provided accurate information about Minnesota election laws and how eligible voters cast their ballots. Unfortunately, her accurate remarks have been misinterpreted and misrepresented by political actors online,» the statement said. «With only a few days left before the election, we remain focused on making sure every eligible Minnesotan knows how and where to cast their ballot.»
Bill Glahn, a policy fellow at the Center of the American Experiment, told Digital that «given the timing, so close to the election, and the audience, Somali TV, she really should have emphasized the need to be an American citizen in order to vote.»
«It’s true most Somali immigrants are naturalized citizens, but not all,» Glahn said. «In fact, we just had a noncitizen sentenced to 30 years in federal prison for the Feeding Our Future fraud.»
The scrutiny comes as the Walz administration confronts hundreds of millions of dollars lost to social services fraud tied to the state’s Somali immigrant community. Critics pointed to a further wrinkle in Minnesota state law – signed by Gov. Tim Walz in 2023 – that provided for «Driver’s Licenses For All» regardless of immigration status. The policy also stipulates that the licenses carry no markings indicating citizenship, even though such IDs are commonly used to register to vote.
Under Minnesota law, a registered voter can «vouch» for up to eight other voters’ residency who want to sign up for same-day voter registration without an ID. The registered voter must go with the person or people to the polling place and sign an oath verifying their address, according to an official fact sheet from the Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State.
Glahn told Digital earlier this year that while the state touts the safeguards it has put in place to ensure only citizens vote, «it’s like murder’s illegal, but it happens all the time.»
«It’s a penalty of perjury,» he said. «You signed an oath, but if you signed as Mickey Mouse, they’re not going to find you.»
In September, a federal indictment was handed down charging an illegal immigrant from India for knowingly making the false claim to be a U.S. citizen to vote in the 2024 general election in Minnesota.
