Panamá supera los 21 mil autos nuevos vendidos en el primer cuatrimestre
El mercado automotriz de Panamá mantiene un crecimiento sostenido en 2026, impulsado por una mayor dinámica de consumo, oferta de modelos y acceso al crédito, lo que abre la puerta a que el sector supere las proyecciones iniciales para este año.
De acuerdo con el presidente de la Asociación de Distribuidores de Automóviles de Panamá (ADAP), Raúl Civiello, la industria había estimado un crecimiento del 5% con 63 mil unidades vendidas, pero el comportamiento observado hasta abril apunta a un ritmo más acelerado, lo que obligará a revisar al alza esas expectativas.
Las cifras oficiales disponibles hasta marzo muestran que el país registró 16,407 autos nuevos inscritos en el primer trimestre de 2026, lo que representa un crecimiento acumulado de 17.6% frente al mismo periodo de 2025, según datos de la Contraloría General.
Este resultado confirma una tendencia positiva que ya se venía consolidando en años anteriores, con incrementos de 14.1% en 2025 y 4.9% en 2024, evidenciando una recuperación sostenida del sector tras la pandemia.
El dinamismo más notable se observó en marzo de 2026, cuando las ventas registraron un crecimiento interanual de 42.5%, alcanzando 6,473 unidades, el mayor salto mensual en lo que va del año.
Este repunte refleja un aumento significativo en la demanda interna, particularmente en segmentos como SUV y vehículos comerciales, que continúan liderando el mercado. El desempeño de marzo marca un punto de inflexión que anticipa un posible cierre anual por encima de lo proyectado inicialmente.
A estas cifras se suman los datos preliminares manejados por ADAP hasta abril, que reflejan la venta de 21,717 unidades acumuladas, lo que representa un crecimiento de 14.0%, incluso considerando el impacto estacional de la Semana Santa.
Solo en abril se comercializaron 5,312 unidades, lo que confirma que el mercado mantiene un ritmo constante de expansión, aunque con una leve moderación respecto al impulso observado en marzo.
“El crecimiento ha sido sostenido todos estos años”, destacó Civiello, al recordar que en 2025 se vendieron 60,233 autos nuevos, un aumento de 10.8% frente a 2024 (54,384 unidades), año que a su vez había crecido un 11% respecto a 2023.
Este comportamiento evidencia una tendencia estructural al alza, apoyada en factores como la diversificación de la oferta automotriz, la entrada de nuevas marcas y el fortalecimiento de los esquemas de financiamiento.
Uno de los elementos más relevantes en la evolución del mercado es el crecimiento de las marcas chinas, que ya representan cerca del 30% de las ventas totales en 2026.
Estas marcas han logrado posicionarse gracias a una combinación de precios competitivos, tecnología y mayor disponibilidad de modelos, lo que ha intensificado la competencia y ampliado las opciones para los consumidores panameños. Sin embargo, el liderazgo sigue en manos de Toyota, que mantiene una posición dominante en el mercado local.
En el segmento de lujo, el comportamiento también muestra señales positivas. Según ADAP, este mercado registra un crecimiento sostenido de 4.6%, algo que no se observaba de manera consistente desde hace casi cinco años.
Este repunte sugiere una recuperación del consumo en segmentos de mayor poder adquisitivo, en línea con la mejora de ciertos indicadores económicos y el acceso a financiamiento especializado.
Por otro lado, el mercado de vehículos eléctricos continúa rezagado en comparación con otros países de la región. En lo que va del año, se han vendido 283 unidades eléctricas (BEVs), lo que representa apenas el 1.3% del total de ventas, una proporción que se ha mantenido estable en torno al 1% en los últimos años.
Esta cifra contrasta con mercados como Costa Rica, donde los eléctricos alcanzan cerca del 17% de participación, evidenciando un rezago significativo en la adopción de movilidad sostenible.
Ante este escenario, desde ADAP se trabaja en conjunto con las entidades financieras para asegurar que el crecimiento del sector se sostenga sobre una base sólida.
“Buscamos que este dinamismo no solo esté impulsado por la oferta de modelos, sino también por el acceso al crédito bajo prácticas responsables y éticas”, explicó Civiello, subrayando la importancia de evitar desequilibrios en el mercado.
Con estos resultados, el sector automotriz panameño se perfila para cerrar 2026 con cifras superiores a las previstas inicialmente. El fuerte desempeño del primer trimestre, el repunte de marzo y la continuidad del crecimiento en abril apuntan a un año en el que la demanda podría superar las 63 mil unidades proyectadas, consolidando al sector como uno de los motores del consumo interno en el país.

A U.S. judge temporarily blocked the Justice Department Friday from «taking any further action pursuant to the creation or operation» of a $1.778 billion «Anti-Weaponization Fund.»
The Trump administration said last week that the fund will compensate Americans unfairly targeted by politicized federal investigations on a «case-by-case» basis.
U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema’s order on Friday comes in response to a lawsuit filed by a group of plaintiffs that includes a former career prosecutor who alleges he was fired for his handling of the Jan. 6 cases. The plaintiffs are suing to block payout from the fund.
The order, which lists the Justice Department as a defendant, states that the DOJ is blocked «from taking any further action pursuant to the creation or operation of the Anti-Weaponization Fund, which includes the transferring of money to the Fund; the consideration of any claims submitted to the Fund; and the disbursing of any funds from the Fund.»

The judge also set a hearing for June 12 in federal court in Alexandria, Virginia.
A Justice Department spokesperson told Fox News Digital on Friday that «The Department remains extremely confident in the legality of the Anti-Weaponization Fund which is supported by ample precedent, including Obama-era settlements.»
«We will not allow the policy preferences of judges to interfere with our efforts to provide restitution to victims of lawfare,» the spokesperson added.
The plaintiffs challenging the fund include former Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew Floyd, an Alexandria resident who prosecuted Capitol riot cases in Washington, D.C., before he was fired last year by then-Attorney General Pam Bondi.
Floyd was a deputy chief of the Justice Department’s Capitol Siege Section. He said he believes his firing was retaliation for his Jan. 6 work, according to The Associated Press.
Another plaintiff is California State University Channel Islands professor Jonathan Caravello, who was acquitted of an assault charge. He was accused of throwing a tear gas canister at federal agents during a 2025 protest against an immigration raid at a Camarillo, California, cannabis farm.
Also named as plaintiffs are the government watchdog Common Cause, the city of New Haven, Connecticut, and the National Abortion Federation, an association of abortion providers.
New Haven claims the Trump administration officials have targeted it and other municipalities that they perceive to be «sanctuary» cities. The federation said it fears that the fund will issue payments to people who have attacked abortion clinics, providing an incentive for more violence against its members, the AP also reported.

The Anti-Weaponization Fund was born out of a settlement between President Donald Trump and the Internal Revenue Service. Trump filed the lawsuit against the IRS in January over the unauthorized disclosure of his tax records.
Claims will be determined by a five-person board appointed by the attorney general, with at least one member selected for consultation with congressional leadership, according to a Justice Department press release. At any point in time, the president has the power to remove a member without cause, it added.
«This is about seeking accountability for all Americans who were victims of law fare and weaponization: millions of Americans whose online speech was censored at the behest of the government, parents silenced at school boards, Senators whose records were secretly subpoenaed, churchgoers targeted by the FBI, and so on,» a Justice Department document stated.
The Anti-Weaponization Fund was slated to last until Dec. 1, 2028.

El Congreso de Guatemala selecciona 70 equipos universitarios que competirán por legislar sobre seguridad en Moot Legislativo
70 equipos de estudiantes universitarios de Guatemala avanzaron a la siguiente fase del Moot Legislativo Interuniversitario 2026, una competencia coordinada por el diputado Julio López que este año centró sus propuestas en el tema de la seguridad para elaborar iniciativas de ley con aplicación viable en el país, de acuerdo con información oficial del organismo legislativo difundida en sus medios oficiales.
La clasificación llegó después de una convocatoria que reunió a 118 equipos y a más de mil estudiantes de universidades de todo el país, según el mismo organismo legislativo. De ese total, 70 equipos fueron seleccionados para continuar en la tercera edición del certamen.
El proceso está coordinado por el diputado Julio López, quinto secretario de Junta Directiva, con el apoyo de la Dirección Legislativa y de la Dirección de Estudios e Investigación Legislativa (DEIL), de acuerdo con la información oficial.
La iniciativa busca que los participantes formulen propuestas normativas sobre seguridad a partir de experiencias y problemas identificados en la vida cotidiana.
López sostuvo, que la edición de 2026 volvió a superar la meta del año anterior. “En Guatemala sí existe una generación dispuesta a involucrarse, debatir, proponer soluciones reales para este país. Esta clasificación no representa solo a quienes avanzan, sino a todos los que asumieron el reto de pensar en el país desde las propuestas y no únicamente desde las críticas”, afirmó el diputado.
La edición actual eligió la seguridad como eje de trabajo con el propósito de que los estudiantes planteen soluciones y mejoras para la protección de la integridad de los ciudadanos, la reducción de riesgos sociales y culturales y el cumplimiento de la ley, según la información oficial del organismo legislativo.
Ese enfoque define la pregunta central del concurso: qué propuestas legislativas pueden presentar los universitarios para responder a problemas concretos del país.
La respuesta, de acuerdo con la convocatoria oficial, es la elaboración de iniciativas de ley orientadas a ofrecer soluciones aplicables en Guatemala.
El diputado Julio López también destacó, en la información difundida por el organismo legislativo, la participación de cientos de jóvenes interesados en intervenir de forma propositiva.
Según esa misma versión oficial, el proceso ha mostrado talento, liderazgo y capacidad para transformar el debate en propuestas concretas, además de disciplina para trabajar en equipo y conocer de primera mano la labor legislativa.
“El Moot Legislativo 2026 busca jóvenes capaces de convertir el debate en propuestas reales para Guatemala. Haber llegado hasta aquí ya los convierte en una generación que decidió involucrarse en lugar de quedarse al margen, lo que viene requerirá preparación, disciplina y mucha capacidad para trabajar en equipo”, dijo López en los canales oficiales del organismo legislativo.
La competencia está organizada en equipos de hasta nueve integrantes, que pueden provenir de distintas carreras, siempre que pertenezcan a una misma universidad, de acuerdo con la información oficial. Durante el desarrollo de las distintas etapas, cada grupo funciona como una bancada dentro de la competencia.
Ese diseño busca reproducir dinámicas del trabajo parlamentario y fortalecer habilidades vinculadas con la argumentación, la negociación y el pensamiento crítico en la toma de decisiones, según el organismo legislativo. La X Legislatura del Congreso de la República presentó esta acción como parte de su compromiso con la educación cívica y la promoción de la participación juvenil.
La institución señaló además que el certamen fomenta el conocimiento sobre los procedimientos legislativos entre los universitarios. En esa lógica, el avance de los 70 equipos clasificados abre una nueva etapa para propuestas centradas en seguridad y desarrolladas dentro de una simulación del trabajo del Congreso de la República.

CodePink’s Medea Benjamin confirms getting ‘serious’ Treasury Department query over Cuba trip

CodePink co-founder Medea Benjamin publicly confirmed for the first time that her organization received an inquiry from the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), seeking detailed information about its March trip to Cuba.
The inquiry, which is often called an administrative subpoena, comes as the Trump administration signals a broad effort to increase federal scrutiny of nonprofit organizations operating in foreign-policy and activist spaces. Last October, after the murder of conservative leader Charlie Kirk, President Donald Trump directed federal agencies to strengthen enforcement against nonprofit entities that facilitate support for political violence.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent reinforced that message this week, arguing that nonprofit organizations and fiscal sponsors can’t shield themselves from legal accountability when resources, funding, organizational infrastructure or grants are used to support unlawful activity and political violence.
«We’ve made substantial progress, and I think in the weeks and months ahead, we’re going to have a lot to report,» Bessent responded to a question in the White House press gallery. He said, for example, that under new changes, the IRS will «demand that nonprofits know their grant recipients.»

«So, if a grant recipient is violent, if they are suppressing people’s rights, then you are responsible for that,» Bessent said. «I think that’s a very good first step.»
The shift reflects a growing administration focus on whether nonprofit networks are exercising sufficient oversight over the projects, activists and international campaigns they sponsor. Against that backdrop, the inquiry by the Office of Foreign Assets Control into the Cuba convoy fits within an effort by Treasury officials to examine whether activist organizations are complying with laws and other federal restrictions, such as sanctions laws.
Speaking on camera in a video promoted by a far-left media platform, BreakThrough News, Benjamin said she and political streamer Hasan Piker first learned about the query when Fox News Digital broke the news last Saturday evening that Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control had launched an investigation into the financial and logistical details of CodePink’s and Piker’s trip to Cuba trip.

The Office of Foreign Assets Control enforces U.S. sanctions on Cuba, which restrict Americans from engaging in many financial transactions with the communist government and require travelers and organizations to comply with licensing and record-keeping requirements for authorized activities.
«I actually didn’t get anything, and neither did Hasan Piker,» Benjamin said. «I mean, we heard this on Fox News, that there was this subpoena out, and I was going outside my front door, looking around for somebody to serve me.»
Benjamin said the inquiry arrived by email and had been sent to CodePink co-founder Jodie Evans. Fox News Digital has learned that CodePink D.C. Coordinator Olivia DiNucci, who regularly harasses politicians as they are having dinner in D.C. restaurants, is also expected to get a query.
«It turns out that it was an email that was sent to CodePink co-founder Jodie Evans, and it was so unofficial that it landed in our spam box,» Benjamin said. «So it was a letter, and it came from the Treasury Department, from the Office of Foreign Assets Control, known as OFAC.»

While criticizing the manner in which the inquiry was delivered, Benjamin acknowledged that the request itself was serious because of the volume of information federal officials are seeking.
«And I don’t want to say it’s not serious. It is serious, because they are asking for all kinds of information,» Benjamin said. «And this is a kind of intimidation tactic that means we have to get a lawyer, that we have to spend a lot of staff time, a lot of energy.»
According to Benjamin, the inquiry includes roughly a dozen detailed questions about the trip and its participants.
«They’re asking about 12 very detailed questions that include things like, ‘How did you get there? Where did you stay? What did you do every hour that you were there?’» Benjamin said. «I guess we have to tell them how many hours we slept.»
Benjamin said approximately 170 people participated in the convoy and suggested the scope of the inquiry could require organizers to account for the activities of every participant.

«There were 170 people, so I don’t know if they want to know what every single person did every single minute of the day,» she said.
Benjamin also confirmed that organizers brought humanitarian supplies to Cuba.
«What we brought — and we brought about $600,000 worth of aid — so it’s a lot, a lot of information that they want,» Benjamin said.
Benjamin framed the inquiry as an effort to discourage Americans from traveling to Cuba or participating in humanitarian missions to the communist island, but said organizers would continue their activities despite the federal scrutiny.

«And of course, this is to make people think, ‘Uh oh, should I go to Cuba? Uh oh, should I keep doing humanitarian aid?’» Benjamin said. «And the answer to that is, yes. We can’t be intimidated. In fact, we have to use this as another reason that we’re so angry at the U.S. government and redouble our efforts.»

Meanwhile, Piker has insisted that he hasn’t received the Treasury Department query.
He stirred up another set of headlines speculating that the «real goal» of the investigation is to target American Marxist tech tycoon Neville Roy Singham, who has pumped $285 million since 2017 into a network of groups including CodePink and BreakThrough News, allegedly spreading pro-China propaganda and sowing discord with massive anti-American street protests.
CodePink and BreakThrough News have been fixtures in those street protests, and Piker has supported them on his hours-long livestreams.
