Platner collapse completes John Fetterman’s break from Sanders socialists

Graham Platner’s political collapse did more than derail a scandal-plagued Senate campaign in Maine. It also completed Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman’s public transformation from a Bernie Sanders-backed progressive populist to one of the left’s most aggressive internal critics.
Fetterman was among the first prominent Democrats to call out Platner’s mounting controversies, even as many party leaders continued backing the scandal-plagued candidate until a former girlfriend publicly accused Platner of rape, an allegation he denies. The accusation prompted the remaining pillars of Democratic support to collapse.
By Wednesday night, Fetterman laid into his onetime political ally Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., in an interview with Fox News’ Charles Hurt on «Jesse Watters Primetime.»
«The trash took itself out,» Fetterman said of Platner’s withdrawal, as Hurt asked who should be held most responsible for the Platner chaos.

«Absolutely, Bernie Sanders needs to apologize to the voters of Maine and to everyone that donated to that train wreck of a campaign,» Fetterman said.
Sanders ultimately called on Platner to end his candidacy after the allegation surfaced, but Fetterman argued the Vermont progressive owed voters an apology for helping elevate him in the first place.
«More than anyone, he pushed ‘P. Hustle’ into the election. And now he keeps pushing these Communists and these kinds of awful, anti-American people.»
Fox News Digital reached out to Sanders, Fetterman and Platner’s campaign for comment.

The comments cap a remarkable political evolution for Fetterman, who recently acknowledged he is more popular with some Republicans than his own party.
«For some strange [reason], I am more popular with Republicans, which is confusing because I vote in the 90-[percentile] Dem-line,» Fetterman told NewsNation in March, adding that he supports Israel and President Donald Trump’s «Operation: Epic Fury» against Iran.
Chris Borick, a professor at Lehigh University and former president of the Pennsylvania Political Science Association, called Fetterman’s change in relationship with Sanders and the Democrats’ progressive wing «dramatic.»
«As someone that follows Pennsylvania politics, I can’t find anything even close in comparison to the shifts that we’ve seen in Fetterman’s positions on an array of matters over a short period of time,» Borick said. «We’ve seen people switch parties, like Arlen Specter… but in terms of a quick departure on the most significant levels, Fetterman’s changes are without precedent in the state.»
Fetterman’s break with the left has not been limited to Sanders-world. In Pennsylvania, his increasingly independent posture has also put distance between him and parts of the state Democratic establishment, including breaking some partisan norms.
State Sen. Doug Mastriano, R-Gettysburg, who served in the Pennsylvania Senate while Fetterman was lieutenant governor and presided over the chamber, said the Democrat had «political differences» with him but was typically «gracious and respectful.»
He spoke of an interaction on the Harrisburg Senate floor when Fetterman learned Mastriano accrued a record number of ballot signatures to qualify to run for governor against then-Attorney General Josh Shapiro.
«Senator Fetterman came down from the rostrum, congratulated me, and said, ‘Doug, 30,000. That’s really impressive. Great job.’ It wasn’t something he had to do,» Mastriano told Fox News Digital.
«I can’t speak for Sen. Fetterman’s political evolution — that’s something only he can explain. But I do respect anyone who is willing to speak their mind, think independently, and put what they believe to be America’s interests first, even when doing so may not be popular within their own party,» said Mastriano, who said Fetterman appears to be «put[ting] Pennsylvania ahead of politics.»
Fetterman recently upstaged his home state’s Democratic standard-bearer, Gov. Josh Shapiro, by teaming up with Republican Sen. David McCormick to help secure a booth on the National Mall for the Great American State Fair after the governor’s office said there was too little time and too little vendor interest to assemble one.
Shapiro’s predecessor, Gov. Tom Wolf, with whom Fetterman served as lieutenant governor during Wolf’s second term, also appeared to have no love lost for his party’s new maverick.
«I have thoughts, but I don’t have to share them anymore,» Wolf, who has largely retired from public life, said in March of Fetterman’s job performance.
When the two were in office in Harrisburg, Fetterman was closely aligned with Sanders and rode a wave of progressive populism to the lieutenant governor’s office — which is a separate primary-ballot line from the governorship.
Sam Chen, a Pennsylvania political analyst and chief strategist at the Allentown-based Liddell Group, told Fox News Digital that Fetterman’s evolution from Sanders ally to critic is a significant one while questioning whether the Democratic Party’s political environment helped cause the break.
«Fetterman was really helped by Sanders — even in Fetterman’s first Senate run … and then against who we really thought was probably the frontrunner in Conor Lamb.»
«Sanders really helped put Fetterman on the map and helped get him over the top,» Chen said, calling the senator’s recent condemnation of Sanders his «biggest break» with the progressive wing.
However, Chen questioned whether Fetterman’s break with Sanders over Platner was less about policy than about judgment, character and candidate quality.
«I wonder if Fetterman would have had this position if Platner had all his policy views that he has now but there was no Totenkopf tattoo or allegations from women.»
During his 2018 lieutenant governor campaign, Fetterman touted Sanders’ endorsement as proof of his progressive bona fides, describing the Vermont senator as one of the few national politicians who had the «little guy’s» back. Fetterman was then still mayor of postindustrial Braddock, a working-class suburb outside Pittsburgh, but his populist profile was already drawing national attention.
Sanders in turn came to Pennsylvania to endorse Fetterman: «What John’s campaign is about … is that we are going to transform this country and create a government that works for all of us, not just wealthy campaign contributors,» he said, according to PBS’ Philadelphia affiliate.

Since his election to the Senate, Pennsylvania Democratic groups, including the Monroe County Democratic Party in the Poconos, have branded him a «traitor,» while Punchbowl described his current political standing as «tenuous» and reported that no member of the Keystone State’s House delegation would confirm support for a 2028 reelection bid.

«Squad» member Rep. Summer Lee, who represents Fetterman’s hometown and is more ideologically aligned with Sanders, told the outlet the increasingly isolated senator would run «at his own peril.»
Chen said Fetterman’s progressive «bona fides» remain, noting he still is reliably liberal on LGBTQ rights, marijuana and abortion — adding that as mayor or lieutenant governor, foreign policy positions were a nonfactor. Still, he argued, the fight over Platner shows how far Fetterman has moved from the progressive coalition that launched him into national politics.

El Ministerio de Salud y Unicef ampliarán el suplemento nutricional a 205 municipios de Guatemala en tres años
Guatemala, el Mspas y Unicef acordaron incorporar el Suplemento Nutricional Lipídico a la atención integral de la niñez en los primeros mil días de vida para extender el programa a 205 municipios priorizados en los próximos tres años, en un país que mantiene uno de los índices de desnutrición crónica más altos de la región y del mundo.
La expansión parte de una fase inicial que ya alcanzó a 14.000 niñas y niños de entre seis y 23 meses en siete municipios de Alta Verapaz y Totonicapán, dos departamentos con altos niveles de vulnerabilidad nutricional. El convenio prevé que esa experiencia sirva de base para escalar la intervención desde los siete municipios y nueve distritos del piloto hacia la cobertura priorizada a nivel nacional.
Según informó el Ministerio de Salud Pública y Asistencia Social, el ministro de Salud Joaquín Barnoya encabezó la firma del acuerdo y sostuvo que la medida busca reforzar la respuesta frente a la desnutrición infantil. “Esta acción contribuirá a reducir la mortalidad y la anemia, y favorecerá el desarrollo físico e intelectual de la niñez”, afirmó.
En el acto también participaron el viceministro de Atención Primaria en Salud Donato Camey y el representante adjunto de Unicef Guatemala Vincenzo Placco. El suplemento se incorporará al Modelo Demostrativo de Atención Integral como parte de la estrategia de atención a la primera infancia.
El SQ-LNS es una pasta de pequeña cantidad, de unos 20 gramos diarios, destinada a niñas y niños desde los seis meses. Aporta 24 vitaminas y minerales esenciales, además de proteínas y ácidos grasos saludables como omega 3 y omega 6.
Su función es preventiva y no terapéutica. Está diseñado para complementar la alimentación en una etapa en la que las necesidades nutricionales aumentan y las dietas suelen presentar múltiples carencias.
De acuerdo con datos citados por Unicef, un metaanálisis de 14 ensayos controlados aleatorizados con más de 37.000 participantes mostró que quienes reciben este suplemento presentan una prevalencia de desnutrición aguda grave 31% menor. El mismo análisis registró una reducción del 17% en la desnutrición crónica grave y una caída del 64% en la anemia por deficiencia de hierro.
La misma fuente indicó que la mortalidad infantil entre los seis y los 24 meses disminuye alrededor de 27% con el uso del SQ-LNS. Los datos también muestran que los niños suplementados tienen entre 16% y 19% menos probabilidades de ubicarse en el decil más bajo en pruebas de lenguaje, habilidades socioemocionales y motricidad.
Esas mejoras equivalen a entre uno y cinco puntos de cociente intelectual, según el nivel de desnutrición de la población, de acuerdo con la información difundida por el organismo. La evidencia sitúa el impacto del suplemento más allá de la supervivencia y lo vincula también con el desarrollo infantil.
El Ministerio de Salud no distribuirá el SQ-LNS como una intervención aislada. La cartera lo integrará en un paquete de acciones que incluye promoción de la lactancia materna, consejería nutricional, control del crecimiento y otras atenciones de salud.
Esa decisión sigue las recomendaciones de la Organización Mundial de la Salud, que establece que los suplementos lipídicos deben acompañarse con orientación sobre alimentación infantil y no reemplazar una dieta diversa. La lógica del programa es sumar el producto a una estrategia de cuidado más amplia durante la primera infancia.
La medida apunta a responder a un problema estructural que golpea con mayor fuerza a comunidades indígenas y rurales en Guatemala. En ese contexto, el convenio firmado entre el ministerio y Unicef fija una ruta de ampliación territorial para los próximos tres años sobre la base de la experiencia ya aplicada en las zonas piloto.

State Department raises travel warning for part of Spain as migrant surge sparks military deployment

The State Department on Saturday raised its Travel Advisory for Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta to Level 3: Reconsider Travel after tens of thousands of migrants surged into the Spanish territory from neighboring Morocco, prompting a major security response.
The updated advisory warns that the «massive and uncontrolled arrival of migrants from Morocco to Ceuta may lead to unpredictable and dangerous security situations.»
«Spain has deployed the Spanish military, Spanish National Police, and Guardia Civil as a result of this serious situation,» the advisory states. «Americans should reconsider travel to the area given the risks posed to their safety and security.»

The advisory applies only to Ceuta, an autonomous Spanish city on the northern coast of Africa that borders Morocco. The rest of Spain remains under its existing travel advisory level.
Spanish officials have scrambled to respond after tens of thousands of migrants crossed into Ceuta this week. Ceuta President Juan Jesús Vivas said Friday that about 60,000 migrants entered the enclave over a 24-hour period, while Spain’s Interior Ministry later estimated roughly 50,000 arrivals since Thursday. Authorities said thousands have since returned to Morocco.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said Spain would boost the presence of security forces in Ceuta, deploy a physical sea barrier to help facilitate repatriations and continue working with Moroccan authorities to combat human trafficking networks.

Authorities have linked the migrant surge to a recent Spanish Supreme Court ruling involving migrants arriving by sea. Sánchez said human trafficking organizations misrepresented the decision, triggering the influx.
The crisis also drew comments from President Donald Trump during a Cabinet meeting Friday at Camp David.
«You know, I saw Spain yesterday, and I watched the catastrophe that took place. It looks like an invasion of a country by hundreds of thousands of people. And that same thing is going to happen to us if the Republicans don’t get elected,» Trump said.

Earlier Friday, Trump also told Fox News chief White House correspondent Jacqui Heinrich: «It’s terrible. Remember that picture. That’s going to be us in three years if the wrong side gets in.»
Ceuta, along with the Spanish enclave of Melilla, has long been a flashpoint for illegal migration into Europe because both territories sit on the African mainland while remaining part of Spain and the European Union.

A Massachusetts federal judge has once again blocked the Trump administration from ending Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Somalia, issuing a new administrative stay after plaintiffs rewrote their lawsuit around constitutional claims just days after a federal appeals court threw out similar stays terminating TPS for Ethiopia and South Sudan.
U.S. District Judge Allison Burroughs, appointed by former President Barack Obama, issued the administrative stay Friday after African Communities Together and other plaintiffs filed an amended complaint alleging the Trump administration violated the Fifth Amendment by terminating Somalia’s TPS designation based on racial and national-origin discrimination.
The plaintiffs filed an amended complaint and emergency motion on Thursday in a renewed bid to keep Somalia’s TPS protections alive after the Supreme Court’s June ruling in Mullin v. Doe sharply limited lower courts’ ability to block TPS terminations.
Burroughs’ latest order has intensified growing criticism over whether district judges are using administrative stays to work around higher court rulings. It comes just days after the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit reversed similar administrative stays issued by U.S. District Judges Brian Murphy and Patti Saris, who had temporarily delayed the Trump administration’s TPS terminations for Ethiopia and South Sudan.

The First Circuit based its rulings on the Supreme Court’s Mullin decision, which ruled lower courts generally cannot block TPS terminations based on non-constitutional claims.
The latest order drew an immediate rebuke from DHS General Counsel James Percival, who accused Burroughs of continuing a pattern of judicial obstruction.
«Judge Allison Burroughs just entered yet another order preventing the termination of Somalia TPS. There is no serious debate about what is going on in these cases — defiance, obstruction, and delay,» Percival wrote on X.
Iowa Solicitor General Eric Wessan argued Burroughs’ order improperly grants emergency relief despite what he described as legally deficient claims.
«I looked at the amended complaint in the Somalia TPS case,» Wessan wrote on X. «The district judge has entered a novel ‘administrative stay’ to sort out the claims. She has declared the TPS termination ‘void’ for now, while deciding whether any of the claims can justify a more permanent pause.»

Wessan argued that the order «turns the law upside down,» writing that four of the lawsuit’s five claims are foreclosed by the Supreme Court’s decision in Mullin and describing the remaining claim as «frivolous.»
«Even if this was a fresh lawsuit without the baggage, the claims cannot justify any relief– much less meet the high bar for interim relief,» Wessan wrote. «This is very bad. I hope that, with time to review, Judge Burroughs vacates her administrative stay to allow the correct status quo to continue.»
The plaintiffs contend, however, that their amended complaint presents a fundamentally different case than those recently rejected by the First Circuit.

The amended lawsuit argues the Department of Homeland Security’s decision to revoke Somalia’s TPS designation was predetermined, pointing to President Donald Trump’s November 2025 Truth Social post announcing the end of TPS months before DHS had completed the review process. Plaintiffs argue that deprived Somali TPS holders of the fair process guaranteed by the Fifth Amendment’s Due Process Clause because the decision had effectively already been made before the agency completed the review required by law.
The complaint also alleges the administration violated the Fifth Amendment’s Equal Protection guarantee by targeting Somali nationals based on race and national origin. It cites Trump’s past remarks describing Somali immigrants as «criminals,» «gang members,» and «low IQ,» as well as his statements that he doesn’t «want them in our country» and to «send them back.»

«These statements evince the Administration’s racist and xenophobic motivations to exclude Somali people from the country. At the same time, the Administration has expressed preferences for white immigrants as ‘nice’ and welcome in the U.S. and created protections for white Afrikaner refugees from South Africa,» the plaintiffs wrote.
Burroughs has presided over the Somalia TPS litigation since earlier this year. On March 13, she initially entered an administrative stay preventing the Somalia TPS termination from taking effect while the litigation proceeded.
