Warren pushed ‘free and easy’ IRS filing system, but docs reveal what she used instead

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., didn’t use the free government tax-filing system she had spent years promoting when it became available in her state, records show.
As far back as 2016, Warren pushed for a free IRS online tax preparation and filing service, a precursor to what became Direct File. The senator touted it as a way for taxpayers to save time and money. When Direct File launched a pilot program serving Massachusetts for the 2024 tax-filing season, however, Warren’s publicly released tax return indicated that she opted to use a private accountant instead.
Warren was ineligible to use Direct File during the 2024 tax-filing season because she chose not to take the standard deduction that year. The standard deduction under the program is a restriction critics say illustrates why the program was too limited to serve many taxpayers.
«The Direct File pilot program has been a huge win for taxpayers,» Warren said in April 2024. «This year, thousands of taxpayers saved hours of their time and the $150 typically spent on TurboTax and other junk filing fees — money that could be spent on groceries or rent … I’m excited to continue to work with the IRS and the Treasury Department to permanently extend and expand this free and easy tax filing solution for Americans.»

Warren has characterized herself as one of the top legislative architects of the Direct File system.
«For years, Senator Warren has been the Direct File program’s biggest champion — yet her own tax returns show she hired a private accountant,» David Williams, president of the Taxpayer Protection Alliance (TPA), a right-of-center fiscal advocacy group, told Fox News Digital.
«Direct File was ill-equipped to handle investment, property and interest income — limiting the tax credits and deductions Americans deserve. At its core, the government would not have any incentive — as the tax preparer, collector, and auditor — to maximize those deductions,» he added.
The Trump administration moved to suspend Direct File in 2025, and the IRS later told states the program would not be available for the 2026 filing season.
Even after her own return showed she used a private accountant and not Direct File for the 2024 tax-filing season, Warren continued to push for the system. On April 15, Tax Day 2026, Warren took a recently-introduced bill to the Senate floor seeking to revive the program.
«Filing your taxes should be easy and free … Let’s save people time and money, and show the American people that government can work for them,» Warren said.

Usage of the Direct File was low during the 2024 tax-filing season, with only 161,042 of the estimated 19 million eligible Americans submitting returns through it, according to an IRS report.
Among those who did use the service, however, 90% rated their experience as «excellent» or «above average,» according to the IRS. Large majorities of respondents reported that Direct File was easy to use and had high quality customer service support.
The TPA, however, says that 25% of Direct File users rated their experiences negatively, citing its analysis of user responses obtained via a Freedom of Information Act request.

Critics of Direct File, such as conservative economist Stephen Moore, have argued that allowing the IRS, which has an incentive to maximize tax revenue, to prepare taxes for Americans creates a conflict of interest and that the program isn’t truly free, given its administrative costs. Proponents like the left-of-center advocacy group Public Citizen, meanwhile, argue that eliminating filing costs could save taxpayers billions of dollars per year at a relatively minor public expense.
Firms such as Intuit and H&R Block lobbied aggressively to kill Direct File, which many believed would cut into their profits.

A gunman fired at the U.S. Consulate in Toronto on Monday, marking the second time this year someone shot at the building, according to authorities.
A single shell casing was found at the scene, and there was damage to the building’s facade.
No injuries were reported in the incident.
«The U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Canada are open and operating normally, though some routine U.S. citizen services in Toronto are being rescheduled,» the consulate said in a statement.

Toronto Deputy Police Chief Frank Barredo said there was a high-speed chase after the shooting that lasted an hour. However, no arrest was made and Barredo committed to continuing the search for those involved.
«We will approach this investigation with great seriousness,» Barredo said at a news conference. «We will bring the people responsible for this to justice.»
Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow described the shooting as a «brazen attack.»
«I want to say to the person or persons responsible, we will get you,» she said.
This was the second shooting targeting the U.S. Consulate this year, with the first coming on March 10, when two suspects allegedly fired multiple shots at the building before driving away in a stolen vehicle.

Sheldon Tracy-Stewart, 18, and Zara Jabbi, 19, were arrested last month and charged with multiple offenses in connection with the March shooting. The allegations have not been tested in court.
A police presence has been seen at the consulate since the first shooting.
Barredo said a patrol vehicle was outside the consulate with its lights on when the shooting happened. Two security personnel were also in the building.
Last month, police said they believed multiple shootings, including the one in March, could be tied to «multilayered» gun-for-hire networks that have also targeted Toronto synagogues.
Two popular Jewish-owned bakeries were targeted by gunfire over the weekend.

Barredo said police had not ruled out a connection between Monday’s consulate shooting and the attacks on the bakeries. The motive for the consulate shooting remains under investigation.
«Investigators will follow the evidence to where it leads,» he said.
Doug Ford, the premier of Ontario, said he was «disgusted» by the recent violence in Toronto.
«I’m totally disgusted by the shootings and vandalism that took place in Toronto over the last few days, including at two Jewish-owned businesses over the weekend and near the U.S. Consulate this morning,» he said on X. «In all cases, active police investigations are underway. I expect all those responsible to be found, prosecuted and punished to the fullest extent of the law.»

Netanyahu se reúne este martes con el presidente de Estados Unidos, Donald Trump, en la Casa Blanca para analizar la guerra con Irán, la situación en Gaza y la implementación del acuerdo de seguridad entre Israel y Líbano, en el primer encuentro presencial entre ambos desde el inicio del conflicto con Teherán.
La reunión marcará el octavo encuentro entre los dos dirigentes desde el regreso de Trump a la presidencia el año pasado y tendrá lugar después de meses en los que la relación bilateral atravesó momentos de tensión pública, aunque ambos buscaron reducir las diferencias.
Antes de partir hacia Washington, Netanyahu definió la visita como una oportunidad clave para la seguridad de Israel. “Es un gran privilegio, pero también una gran responsabilidad”, afirmó el primer ministro israelí.
También anticipó que Irán ocupará el primer lugar de la agenda. “Abordaremos todos los temas previstos y, ante todo, Irán. Naturalmente, nuestro objetivo es proteger nuestra seguridad y también ampliar el círculo de paz que nos rodea”, sostuvo.
El encuentro se celebrará en un contexto marcado por la guerra entre Estados Unidos e Irán, que comenzó tras los ataques conjuntos estadounidenses e israelíes contra objetivos iraníes a finales de febrero. Las diferencias entre Trump y Netanyahu quedaron expuestas durante las negociaciones para ese cese de las hostilidades. En ese período, el mandatario estadounidense lanzó duras críticas contra el primer ministro israelí y posteriormente lo calificó en una entrevista como “un tipo muy difícil”.

Además de Irán, los mandatarios analizarán la aplicación del marco de seguridad patrocinado por Estados Unidos que Israel y Líbano firmaron el mes pasado. La implementación del acuerdo enfrenta dificultades sobre el terreno y constituye uno de los principales asuntos bilaterales de la reunión.
La situación en Gaza también formará parte de las conversaciones. Los esfuerzos diplomáticos para impulsar la reconstrucción del enclave palestino permanecen estancados, mientras la guerra entre Israel y Hamas se acerca a su tercer año.
En ese escenario, la situación humanitaria continúa deteriorada y las fuerzas israelíes mantienen operaciones militares contra personas que, según el Ejército, pertenecen a grupos armados.
Especialistas consideran que uno de los principales objetivos políticos de la visita consiste en exhibir una imagen de unidad entre Washington y Jerusalén después de las versiones sobre un enfriamiento de la relación.
El experto en relaciones internacionales de la Universidad Hebrea de Jerusalén, Yonatan Freeman, sostuvo que la reunión busca transmitir un mensaje tanto a los aliados como a los adversarios regionales. “Creo que la cuestión principal es mostrar al mundo, mostrar a Irán y también a Líbano y a otros, que no existe una ruptura ni ningún desacuerdo importante entre Estados Unidos e Israel”, declaró a AFP.
Freeman también consideró que las coincidencias entre ambos dirigentes superan ampliamente las diferencias. “Existe más acuerdo entre los dos líderes que desacuerdo”, afirmó. Según el analista, las discrepancias se concentran en los métodos, los plazos y la intensidad de las operaciones militares, pero no en los objetivos finales de la estrategia regional.
El especialista además estimó que Trump buscará concentrar las conversaciones en dos prioridades: Irán y la ampliación de los Acuerdos de Abraham, promovidos durante su primer mandato para normalizar las relaciones entre Israel y varios países árabes.
Esos acuerdos permitieron el establecimiento de relaciones diplomáticas formales entre Israel y Emiratos Árabes Unidos, Barhéin y posteriormente Marruecos, bajo la mediación estadounidense.
La visita de Netanyahu además coincide con el inicio de la etapa previa a las próximas elecciones nacionales en Israel, en las que buscará un nuevo mandato. ‘Shame on you’: Sherrill knew voter-roll bombshell was coming when she called Trump a liar, DOJ official says

The Justice Department’s top Civil Rights official accused New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill of criticizing President Donald Trump’s election integrity claims even though she already knew her administration was about to disclose a major voter registration problem.
In his July 16 address, Trump accused China of acquiring sensitive voter data and said U.S. intelligence agencies hid that revelation from the public while also alleging several Democrat-run states, including New Jersey, have large numbers of noncitizens registered to vote.
Department of Homeland Security data released in concert with the speech found more than 35,000 potential noncitizens are on the Garden State’s rolls.
«When the president came out with his Primetime speech last Thursday, I believe in the sequencing of events that has been laid out, she already knew that this revelation was forthcoming,» Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon said.

Dhillon said governors willing to cooperate with the DOJ would receive assistance but warned states refusing to do so could face lawsuits.
«It’s a bipartisan problem, actually. And I’m really looking forward to helping everyone who will work with us fix this problem. And if they won’t work with, we’ll sue them and we’ll still fix the problem.»
Following Trump’s address, Sherrill signed on to a statement with 23 other Democratic governors attempting to throw cold water on the president’s wide-ranging claims, calling him a liar, as Dhillon said.
«It’s deeply alarming that President Trump continues to try to undermine free and fair elections. No amount of lies and conspiracy theories can change the fact that our country’s elections have repeatedly been proven to be safe and secure,» read the rebuke, formally led by Kentucky Gov. Andrew Beshear.

Sherrill’s co-signed statement went on to accuse Trump of trying to «intimidate and silence voters» while claiming Democrats are the ones «actually making life better for American families by lowering costs, creating jobs and protecting our freedoms.»
«Ours is a winning message, which is why he is trying to undermine democracy.»
Dhillon said Sherrill and all other governors should join with DOJ to investigate every substantive claim of election integrity violations, warning it is their own citizens who stand to be hurt.
«Every single person who voted illegally canceled out the vote of a New Jersey voter; that is shameful,» she said.
«And instead of pointing fingers at the president, which is what Governor Sherrill did… she should be raising her hand to work with the federal government to clean this up ASAP because that’s the vow she took when she ran for office and she got sworn in as the governor of her state is to protect her citizens, and her citizens have a right to vote.»

Dhillon’s letter gave Sherrill five business days, expiring Tuesday, to turn over voter data in the case. Meanwhile, Sherrill indicated to WCBS that she wouldn’t be complying.
«It is not a surprise… the Trump administration wants to immediately weaponize this against people as opposed to focusing on making sure we’re running free and fair elections,» the Democrat said.
Asked about the accusation Sherrill knew about her own state’s motor-voter scandal when she accused Trump of being a liar, Sherrill spokesman Sean Higgins pointed Fox News Digital to comments she made after touring a grocery store in Essex County to sign unrelated legislation.

«We’re running an independent investigation right now to get to the bottom of exactly how this happened and what’s going on, but it is not a surprise to me that the federal government that the Trump administration wants to immediately weaponize this against people as opposed to focusing on making sure that we’re running free and fair elections,» Sherrill said.
Pennsylvania, New York and several other states have also resisted DOJ requests for voter registration data, arguing federal law and state privacy protections limit what information can be shared.
The DOJ has also sued officials in some of the states over the election integrity crisis, including New Jersey Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell.
