Rep. Tom Kean Jr., R-N.J., said Tuesday he is «more energized than ever» and plans to return to in-person work «within a matter of weeks,» issuing a new statement after months away from Capitol Hill because of an undisclosed medical issue.

Kean, who represents New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District, has been absent from Congress for months while dealing with undisclosed health issues keeping him away from Washington and the campaign trail. Kean said in April that he was addressing a «personal medical issue,» but he has not publicly disclosed the nature of the issue.

«Serving the people of this district is the honor of my life. Every day, I wake up determined to build on the results I have delivered for New Jersey families such as lowering costs, restoring the SALT deduction, funding our law enforcement, helping veterans, standing with Israel, strengthening our economy, and making government work better,» Kean said in a statement Tuesday, amid growing scrutiny over his absence.

Kean has not cast a vote since March 5, according to The New York Times. House voting records also listed Kean as «Not Voting» on a May 21 roll call vote.

«I am optimistic about the road ahead, and ready to earn the support of voters in every corner of the district,» Kean continued. «I am more energized then ever to keep fighting for the people of New Jersey’s 7th District. Right now I am focused on my recovery and under the advice of healthcare professionals I will transition from virtual work to in person work within a matter of weeks. At that time I will be completely transparent as to the nature of my medical condition.»

Kean added that he «understand[s] the need for transparency on this matter» and looks forward to sharing his experience with the public.

Ahead of Kean’s Tuesday primary election, during which he ran unopposed, President Donald Trump endorsed the New Jersey Republican.

Trump praised Kean in a Truth Social post Monday night, describing him as a strong supporter of the president’s «America First Agenda,» adding the New Jersey Republican is «working tirelessly» on border security, crime, the economy, taxes, energy, veterans and Second Amendment issues.

«Tom Kean has my Complete and Total Endorsement for Re-Election,» Trump concluded, telling people to get out and vote.

Trump’s support remains one of the most powerful forces in Republican primaries, with candidates across several states openly competing for his backing ahead of key contests. His endorsement of Kean signals the White House and GOP leaders are still lining up behind the incumbent as Republicans fight to defend their narrow House majority this fall.

Four Democrats — Rebecca Bennett, Michael Roth, Tina Shah and Brian Varela — were competing for the nomination to face Kean in November, but Bennett edged them out Tuesday night during the Democratic primary.

The Associated Press described Bennett as a former Navy helicopter pilot, Roth as a former Small Business Administration official, Shah as an intensive care doctor and Varela as a businessman, with each candidate raising seven figures as Democrats target Kean’s battleground seat.

El 1 de mayo, el presidente estadounidense Donald Trump firmó una orden ejecutiva que endurece las sanciones contra Cuba reiterando que la isla comunista, situada a 150 kilómetros de la costa de Florida, representa «una amenaza extraordinaria» para la seguridad nacional de Estados Unidos.

La administración Trump, que impone desde enero un bloqueo petrolero a la isla, también ha puesto su mira en el Grupo de Administración de Empresas S.A. (Gaesa), vinculado a las fuerzas armadas cubanas y una de las primeras empresas en ser sancionadas bajo la nueva orden ejecutiva.

En correspondencia, la Oficina de Control de Activos Extranjeros del Departamento del Tesoro (OFAC) estableció el próximo viernes como fecha límite para que las empresas extranjeras que tienen negocios con Gaesa reajusten sus operaciones o enfrenten las sanciones de Washington.

Estas medidas pueden implicar dificultades para acceder al sistema financiero internacional o realizar transacciones, la prohibición de que los bancos trabajen con estas empresas o la congelación de activos.

En este contexto, varias cadenas hoteleras ya anunciaron su retiro o la reducción de sus operaciones en la isla.

El grupo español Iberostar dejó de administrar 12 hoteles que gestionaba en Cuba en asociación con Gaesa, aunque continuará trabajando con otras seis instalaciones que son propiedad el Ministerio del Turismo, informaron este martes a la AFP varias fuentes cercanas al asunto.

Al ser contactada, la empresa con sede en Palma de Mallorca (España) no respondió a las solicitudes de comentarios sobre su decisión.

Iberostar y Meliá fueron las primeras cadenas hoteleras españolas en llegar a Cuba, después que la isla se abriera al turismo internacional para salir de la crisis provocada por la caída del bloque soviético en 1991.

El lunes, la cadena hotelera canadiense Blue Diamond anunció a la AFP que cesaba sus operaciones en Cuba debido a la situación actual del sector, en momentos en que la isla se encuentra bajo una creciente presión por parte de Estados Unidos.

Meliá y el grupo asiático Archipiélago International también estudian limitar su presencia o abandonar la isla, según adelantaron a la AFP fuentes cercanas al sector.

En el caso de Meliá podría cesar la actividad en 14 de los 35 hoteles que gestiona en la isla.

A mediados de mayo, dos navieras europeas, la francesa CMA CGM y la alemana Hapag-Lloyd, suspendieron «temporalmente» las entregas y los nuevos envíos de contenedores de mercancías a Cuba.

Activo en el sector de la minería, también en el radar de Washington, la minera canadiense Sherritt se convirtió el 7 de mayo en la primera empresa extranjera en anunciar que abandonaba Cuba, donde extraía níquel y cobalto desde la década de 1990 a través de la empresa mixta General Nickel Company S.A.

«El impacto para la economía cubana de la salida de todas estas compañías internacionales en el corto plazo es devastador«, declaró a la AFP el economista y consultor cubano, Daniel Torralbas. Esto «ubica al 2026 como el peor año en la historia económica de Cuba en los últimos 70», apunta el experto.

El secretario de Estado, Marco Rubio, firme opositor del gobierno de La Habana, acusó hace dos semanas a los líderes cubanos de robo y corrupción a través de Gaesa.

Rubio recordó que fue el expresidente Raúl Castro, ahora imputado por la justicia estadounidense, el fundador de Gaesa que, según el departamento de Estado estadounidense, posee activos por valor de 18.000 millones de dólares y controla hasta el 70% de la economía cubana.

El martes, el gobierno cubano defendió el papel de ese conglomerado de empresas, creado en la década de 1990 para eludir el embargo estadounidense, vigente desde 1962, y generar divisas para impulsar la economía cubana.

Gaesa «no es una estructura opaca, ni paralela al Estado cubano; ha sido, por el contrario, una respuesta articulada de probada eficiencia frente al cerco económico que históricamente ha tratado de asfixiar a la Revolución cubana», explicó el gobierno.

FIRST ON FOX: An inspection of the Delaney Hall ICE facility contradicts some claims made by New Jersey elected officials as the facility’s operator faces a new lawsuit from the state’s attorney general.

Just hours before activists from the Democratic Socialists of America and other far-left organizations held a demonstration in front of her office, New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport announced that the state is suing GEO Group Inc., which the Department of Homeland Security contracted to operate the ICE facility.

The unclassified investigation, which was obtained by Fox News Digital, is the most recent investigative report conducted by the DHS Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) at Delaney Hall. The conclusion of the investigation, conducted by six internal OPR officers and four outside contractors, didn’t align with some claims made by the attorney general’s lawsuit. 

«During the inspection, [the Office of Detention Oversight] assessed the facility’s compliance with 22 standards… and found the facility in compliance with 17 of those standards,» the inspection’s conclusion read.

SOMETHING TO HIDE? ICE UNDER FIRE FOR SUBSTANDARD CONDITIONS AT FOR-PROFIT DETENTION CENTER

The report said that it recommends that DHS Enforcement and Removal Operations in Newark «continue to work with the facility to resolve the deficiencies that remain outstanding in accordance with contractual obligations.»

The attorney general’s office cited reports of media outlets and Democratic members of Congress as the basis for the lawsuit, claiming that worms were found in food, toilet paper wasn’t being provided, bad or lack of medical care was present, and a report of tuberculosis.

Fox News Digital identified the five standards that weren’t met in the investigation from last August.

The investigation found deficiency in food services for ice build-up in the freezers, admission and release deficiency for not fingerprinting detainees upon release, deficiency in holding room facilities for not properly recording checks on hold rooms and custodial information, deficiency in environmental health and safety for not properly labeling cleaning equipment on site and deficiency in suicide and self-harm prevention for not monitoring detainees for the proper amount of time.

DHS punched back at the lawsuit in a post on X shortly after it was issued by the attorney general. 

«This is a frivolous lawsuit,» the post read. «Just last week on May 28, four representatives of the New Jersey State Health Department arrived at approximately 11:00 AM.  They entered the facility and inspected the foodservice department. The inspection of the kitchen was completed and they departed around 12:30 PM.»

PROTESTERS CLASH WITH ICE AS NJ DETENTION FACILITY DEMONSTRATIONS CONTINUE

The attorney general and Democratic Governor Mikie Sherrill have faced mounting pressure from far-left and socialist groups over Sherrill’s deploying of state police during riots that took place outside of the facility. 

On Monday, Indivisible, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit funded by Democratic billionaire George Soros, protested outside Sherrill’s Trenton office, demanding that the governor stop working with DHS and shut down the Delaney Hall facility, accusing Sherrill of spreading «MAGA propaganda» and criticizing her for working with DHS to secure the facility. 

Despite deploying state police who clashed with rioters last Friday night, Sherrill claimed on an X post Saturday morning that local law enforcement was there to protect the agitators from ICE agents.

FBI ARRESTS PROTESTER WHO THREATENED TO KILL ICE OFFICER’S FAMILY AT NJ DETENTION CENTER PROTEST, BLANCHE SAYS

On Tuesday, Democratic Socialists of America, «Climate Revolution Action Network,» «State of Liberation Jersey City» and other groups protested outside of Davenport’s office, saying that «Mikie and her AG» must «meet the demands of the detained Delaney Hall hunger strikers; and stop brutalizing protesters in the name of ‘public safety.’»

A number of nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations have been mobilizing rioters in front of Delaney Hall over the past week, including the brutal clash between New Jersey state police and rioters last Friday night. 

DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin noted that agitators at the facility were «well supplied» and said one agitator flew to New Jersey from Portland just to participate in the unrest.

A number of rioters have been arrested, and during the demonstration in front of Davenport’s office, agitators called for the release of protestors detained during the riots.

«Drop all charges and free protestors who exercised their constitutionally protected rights to protest the deplorable treatment of immigrants in New Jersey,» the caption of the flyer for the event read.
