Su padre le dio una golpiza, vio que no respiraba y lo tiró en una zanja: el brutal crimen que conmociona a Uruguay
El adolescente Jonathan Correa, de 15 años, tuvo una fuerte discusión con su padre, Jonathan Calero, el viernes de noche y el mayor lo comenzó a golpear tomando un cable. El hombre, de 37 años, le dio una fuerte golpiza en su dormitorio, mientras su madre y su hermana (de nueve años) estaban en otra habitación. Cuando terminó de golpearlo, lo mandó a dormir. El adolescente ya no se despertaría.
Entre las dos y las tres de esa madrugada –según la reconstrucción que hizo Fiscalía consignada por La Diaria–, Calero se levantó y fue hasta el dormitorio en el que hacía algunas horas había golpeado a su hijo. Allí vio que el menor no reaccionaba, que estaba sin signos vitales. Entonces decidió cargarlo, llevárselo de la casa y tirarlo en una cuneta.
Cuando la madre se levantó, vio que el adolescente no estaba y ambos empezaron a buscarlo. Hasta que finalmente el hombre confiesa que está en un lugar. Allí intentaron reanimarlo, pero no había nada por hacer. Jonathan, el adolescente de 15 años, había muerto.
Lo primero que dijo Calero cuando vio que su hijo había fallecido fue que se podría haber caído de un “puentecito que había cerca”, de acuerdo al relato de la fiscal.
El caso generó conmoción en Uruguay. Con el paso de los días se supo que la UTU (el secundario especializado en oficios al que asistía) había denunciado que Jonathan sufría violencia desde que era chico, pero esa denuncia nunca avanzó ni en la Policía ni en Poder Judicial. También hablaron las autoridades políticas –hasta el presidente de la República, Yamandú Orsi–, quienes lamentaron la omisión que hubo de parte del Estado en este caso.
La Justicia dispuso que Calero sea imputado por un delito de violencia doméstica agravada y homicidio especialmente agravado por haberse cometido contra su hijo y en presencia de menores de edad, tal como lo pidió la fiscal del caso, Sabrina Flores.
Calero era un clasificador y feriante.
Violencia desde “hace mucho tiempo”
Jonathan era en la secundaria un chico introvertido. Así lo recordaron sus compañeros en el noticiero uruguayo Telemundo. El joven no era muy sociable: no tenía amigos ni molestaba. Eso sí: era un “buen pibito”, “inteligente” y “querido” por sus compañeros pese a su timidez. Pero los otros alumnos de la UTU también notaban que en su casa sufría violencia. Tenía moretones en los brazos y se los tapaba con una campera”, relató uno de ellos. También contaron que se lo notaba con los “ojos negros”.
La violencia no solo fue una percepción de sus compañeros: también quedó reflejada en las pericias forenses que fueron analizadas por la Fiscalía, y consignadas en el artículo de La Diaria. En el escrito de imputación, la fiscal concluyó que hubo “diferentes tipos de violencias físicas sobre el cuerpo” de Jonathan. La médica que realizó la autopsia forense planteó que tiene “múltiples heridas, de diferente tiempo de antigüedad”, y que la causa de muerte son los golpes que recibió.
“Hay tantas lesiones que la forense no pudo constatar bien dónde había iniciado el sangrado”, señala el pedido de imputación de la fiscal, que fue leído en la audiencia.
El padre de Jonathan fue enviado a la cárcel en prisión preventiva por 180 días, mientras avanza la investigación.
La defensa no se opuso a la formalización ni a la prisión preventiva. Sin embargo, su abogado (de oficio) solicitó atención médica en la cárcel para continuar un tratamiento de asma. También pidió una pericia psiquiátrica para saber si es capaz que apreciar el carácter ilícito de sus actos: es decir, para saber si es imputable o inimputable.
La hermana de Jonathan originalmente fue a vivir con su abuela, pero sobre ella también hay acusaciones de violencia, según informó El Observador. Por eso, la Justicia dispuso que tanto ella –que tiene nueve años– como dos de sus primos fueran enviados a centros del organismo estatal de menores de Uruguay (INAU).
Yamandú Orsi: un crimen “espantoso”
El presidente uruguayo se refirió el jueves a la muerte de Jonathan y marcó las fallas estatales que hubo.
“Es espantoso, terrible. La muerte de un niño nos parte el corazón. De esa forma, además: una muerte violenta”, expresó Orsi en una rueda de prensa. Señaló también que la vida que llevan menores como Jonathan significa “otro golpe” para el Estado uruguayo. Y como tercer lugar planteó una pregunta: “¿Cómo desde el Estado no pudimos resolverlo a tiempo, cómo no lo pudimos impedir?”.
El presidente le dio la razón al ministro del Interior, Carlos Negro, quien antes había expresado su “indignación” y “profunda tristeza” por la muerte del joven. “El Estado todo falló. Los mecanismos de protección que debemos tener frente a las instancias evidentemente fallaron. Tenemos que hacer un reconocimiento de estas fallas en los controles, tenemos que seguramente asumir las responsabilidades como Estado e investigar qué fue lo que sucedió, qué fue lo que falló y luego sacar conclusiones”, expresó.
Negro anunció que se inició una investigación administrativa para buscar responsabilidades.
La Suprema Corte de Justicia, en tanto, también pidió informes para saber cómo fue el accionar de la Justicia luego de la denuncia que presentó el centro de estudios por la violencia que recibía Jonathan.

Finnish F/A-18 Hornets and Swedish JAS 39 Gripens were scrambled after Russian aircraft were detected in the international airspace, according to the Swedish Armed Forces.

The Russian formation included a Tu-134 transport plane, a high-altitude, supersonic MiG-31 interceptors designed to detect and engage long-range threats; and Su-30 multirole fighter jets which are designed for air-to-air and air-to-ground combat.
«This is what close cooperation looks like in practice,» Maj. Gen. Jonas Wikman, commander of the Swedish Air Force, said in a statement following the joint operation.
«Built over years on trust and strong personal relationships, we can now operate seamlessly together — as air forces, as nations and as Allies.»
Concern over Russian military activity along NATO’s eastern flank has grown following a string of airspace violations.
These include Russian drones entering Polish airspace, a Mi-8 helicopter crossing from Kaliningrad into Poland, drones crashing in Romania and Moldova, and armed Russian jets entering Estonian airspace before being intercepted by NATO aircraft on Sept. 18.

In Estonia, Defense Minister Martin Herem warned that Russia could be capable of using military force against Estonia within a year and argued that Tallinn must determine whether its defenses are sufficient for such a scenario.
Prime Minister Kristen Michal stated that the government is ready to shut down border crossing points on short notice if threat assessments change, according to reports.
Speaking at the St. Petersburg International United Cultures Forum on Friday, Putin pushed back against such warnings.
«Many people in Europe say they expect an attack from Russia and therefore claim they must prepare for war with Russia,» Putin said.
«I want to emphasize once again: we are not preparing for military action against Europe. We have no such plans, no basis for them, and, most importantly, no real motive to escalate the situation with Europe.»
Putin then mocked Herem’s warnings: «As we jokingly say in Russia: ‘The circus has left, but the clowns remain.’ It is political clowning. … Clearly, these statements are complete nonsense and absurdity,» Putin said, according to EurAsia Daily.

Estonia sits across the Gulf of Finland from Finland, with the three countries forming part of NATO’s increasingly integrated northern and eastern defenses amid concerns about Russian military activity.
Finland formally joined NATO as its 31st member in April 2023, roughly doubling the alliance’s land border with Russia. Sweden followed as the 32nd member in March 2024. Estonia, which regained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, has been a NATO member since 2004.
The Baltic Sea region has also remained on heightened alert following incidents involving gas pipelines, sabotage and hybrid threats since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Reuters has reported.
NATO said in June that it was enhancing protection of its eastern members in the cyber and space domains while helping countries build resilience against what it describes as hostile Russian actions, including cyberattacks, sabotage and airspace violations.
NATO says its military activities along the eastern flank are entirely defensive and that it is «ready, willing and able to defend every Ally.»

The alliance has said an attack against any member would be met with a «resounding response.»
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte recently underscored Washington’s role in the alliance during a visit to Iowa, telling The Associated Press that Putin «knows that the United States and Europe are totally intertwined.»
«We have to make sure that we are prepared, we are strong, and he knows it,» Rutte said.
«And if he does anything silly, he knows our reaction will be tough,» he warned.
European intelligence officials said Sept. 24 that Russia could test NATO’s defenses.
Denmark’s Defense Intelligence Service assessed the risk of a limited Russian military attack against a NATO country in the coming months as «low but growing» and said Moscow is expected to intensify its hybrid campaign against NATO and the West.
The service said in a statement that a full-scale Russian invasion of a NATO member remains highly unlikely but can no longer be ruled out.

El hijo mayor del expresidente Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2022) viene defendiendo la necesidad de que la derecha se una desde la primera vuelta para evitar el balotaje, mientras que el líder del izquierdista Partido de los Trabajadores (PT) alega que necesita el apoyo del electorado que rechaza su Gobierno para derrotar al “fascismo” sin correr riesgos.
Un eventual balotaje se realizaría el 25 de octubre.
“Jubilar a Lula y libertar a Brasil”
Bolsonaro dejó clara su intención al publicar este domingo un mensaje en redes en el que, aprovechando el alto índice de desaprobación del presidente, pidió votos para “jubilar a Lula y libertar a Brasil. No deje para la segunda vuelta lo que puede resolver en la primera”, indicó.
Acaparando el 76 % de la intención de voto en el último sondeo de la firma Datafolha (un 40% para Lula y un 36% para Bolsonaro) y con el porcentaje de indecisos reducido a solo el 2% (un 5% decidido a votar en blanco), los dos favoritos disputan el voto del 17% de los que apoyan a los otros diez candidatos.
Ni Lula ni Bolsonaro tienen más del 50% en ninguna encuesta, un porcentaje que necesitarían para ser elegidos sin necesidad de balotaje, pero los sondeos indican que tienen espacio para avanzar sobre los electores de los candidatos minoritarios, muchos de los cuales admiten estar en duda y que pueden cambiar su voto a última hora.

Pope Leo XIV called for an end to medically assisted suicide during a visit to medical facilities in Lourdes, France, on Sunday.
The pope gave Mass in Lourdes before addressing a large crowd who cheered as he emphatically affirmed the dignity of all human lives and admonished listeners to reject the «false compassion» of assisted suicide.

«It is precisely in the name of this inalienable dignity of the human person that we must reject the temptation to cause death under the guise of false compassion,» the pope said, speaking in French.
«It is impossible to regard causing death as something normal. What is legal is not necessarily moral,» he continued. «Here in Lourdes, the city of the sick and of hope, I appeal to the entire healthcare community to remember the profound meaning of your vocation, which is to care for a suffering person, not to eliminate that person.»

Her granddaughter, Brigitte Kranendonk, said that she was her grandmother’s primary caregiver and that her family had decided to place Stegemann at The Pearl care home in Cannifton due to physical and mental decline.

But according to Kranendonk, her grandmother still had a good appetite even following a stomach cancer diagnosis, and rejected the idea of using MAID when it was presented as an option.
Kranendonk said she was present for Stegemann’s second MAID assessment, and said that the doctor used «really loose terms, never using the words death or dying.»

When Kranendonk interjected and said, «She doesn’t understand what you’re saying,» the doctor allegedly looked at Stegemann and said, «We’re going to make sure you won’t have any more pain.»

According to a doctor, Stegemann was «deemed fit for MAID, and we’re going to proceed,» The Daily Mail reported.
Kranendonk said that two days before Stegemann’s death, she asked her grandmother directly whether she understood that the scheduled procedure meant she would die.

According to Kranendonk’s account to the outlet, Stegemann began crying and said she had «made a mistake.»
Stegemann was allegedly told by the doctor her grandmother could «deny» MAID on the day of the procedure, but Stegemann was already unsure if her grandmother had actually consented to it, did not want to cause her more stress, and wanted to enjoy what could be the last few days she had left with her grandmother.
