Death toll rises to 9 in church attack as officials blame ‘extremist’ Islamist ideology

A group of gunmen stormed a Christian church in Jordan during a funeral on Friday, killing nine people and injuring more than two dozen, according to authorities.
The shooting took place at a Greek Orthodox church in Karak, about 55 miles south of the capital, Amman.
Jordanian Health Minister Ibrahim al-Budour said Saturday that one critically injured patient remained hospitalized at Prince Ali Military Hospital in unstable condition.
Government spokesperson Mohammad Momani said Saturday that the attackers subscribed to «extremist takfiri ideology,» which brands people who reject a strict interpretation of Islam as apostates or nonbelievers. Terrorist groups such as ISIS have invoked takfiri beliefs to justify killing Muslims, Christians and Jews.

Karak is home to a sizable Christian minority, and Momani sought to emphasize that Christians are «part of Jordan’s national fabric.»
It remains unclear whether the gunmen were affiliated with any terror group, and Jordanian authorities have not announced any arrests in connection with the attack.
Footage shown on Jordanian state television showed two gunmen armed with what appeared to be pistols approaching the church and opening fire, The Associated Press reported.
A third man carrying what appeared to be a semiautomatic rifle joined them moments later, before all three rushed toward the church.

Photos and videos from witnesses show broken glass and pools of blood inside the church. After the location was secured by police, two bodies covered with blankets were seen outside the church.
Dorgham Halasa told the AP that intense gunfire erupted in the church some 15 minutes after the funeral service began. People began running, he said.
Halasa said he didn’t see the gunmen, but said others he spoke with reported seeing at least four of them. Jordanian authorities had not confirmed the number of attackers as of Saturday.
On Friday, King Abdullah II said Jordan will «confront the terrorist act that targeted Karak with the harshest penalties.»

«Whoever imagines that the bullets of treachery can divide the ranks of Jordanians will fail in his endeavor before our steadfastness and unity,» he added. «Our deepest condolences to the families of the martyrs, and our wishes for recovery to the wounded.»
Jordan announced three days of national mourning following the attack, according to the state-run Petra News Agency.

Nearly 1,000 arrested across France as police find potential weapons on protestors: officials

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!
Nearly 1,000 people were arrested Saturday as nationwide protests resumed, France’s Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez told reporters.
Earlier in the day, police officers preemptively searched protesters, and arrested people suspected of carrying potential weapons, including fireworks and ball bearings, Reuters reported.
Nuñez did not specify where the arrests were made.
In Paris, where police estimated 110,000 people marched, officers conducted more than 3,000 checks and arrested 65 people, the BBC reported.
The French Interior Ministry said about 410,000 people participated in protests nationwide, while union organizers estimated attendance at 800,000. In Paris, union organizers put turnout at 250,000, compared with the police estimate of 110,000, according to CBS News.

«Violent individuals have no place in the marches,» the Paris Police Department said in a social media post. «The objective is clear: to prevent troublemakers from joining the procession, and to ensure the safety of the demonstrators.»
Central Paris resembled a city under lockdown, as shopkeepers boarded up storefronts, museums closed and more than 20 metro stations suspended service.
In other cities — including Clermont-Ferrand, Grenoble, Lille and Nice — police have resorted to firing tear gas to break up unruly crowds, Reuters reported.
Also in Nice, police used a water cannon to disperse a group of demonstrators who refused to pull back. And in Marseille and Lyon, there have been clashes between police officers and hooded youths.

Some 70,000 police officers have been deployed across France to clamp down on agitators and prevent the kind of unrest seen during recent demonstrations, when cars were torched and the city hall building in Limoges was set on fire.
Last weekend, more than 2,700 people were arrested during protests that later turned into riots and looting sprees.
The nationwide marches were meant to reflect broader dissatisfaction with the French government, with protesters taking to the streets to air a range of different grievances.

The protests began weeks earlier and were led by high school and university students. They were frustrated with teacher shortages and poor conditions at schools, including overcrowded classrooms and dilapidated buildings.
The movement gained momentum when major labor unions joined the demonstrations, broadening the protests to include opposition to the government’s austerity policies and concerns over wages, pensions and the overall cost of living.

Virginia Dems cast doubt on prosecution of colleague after embracing criminal allegations against Trump

Virginia Democrats who previously defended investigations and allegations against Donald Trump are urging restraint now that federal prosecutors have charged one of their own.
The shift is evident across the party’s top ranks after the indictment of Virginia Senate President Pro Tempore L. Louise Lucas. Lieutenant Gov. Ghazala Hashmi, who rejected Republican claims that Trump was being selectively prosecuted after his 2023 classified-documents indictment, is now stressing Lucas’ «constitutional presumption of innocence» and arguing Lucas «is fully entitled to legal due process.»
Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones, who said last year that Trump tried to «incite a riot» and «overturn an election,» says the allegations against Lucas must be tested through a legal process «free from political interference or bias.»
POWERFUL DEM’S JABS AT TRUMP COME BACK TO HAUNT HER AFTER OFFICE RAIDED BY FBI: ‘AGED WELL’
Rep. Bobby Scott, D-Va., likewise joined Sens. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine in declaring that «those charged with crimes are innocent until proven guilty» and questioning the Justice Department’s motivations, years after Scott said during Trump’s first impeachment that «the facts are uncontested,» called his conduct a «gross abuse of presidential power» and declared that «no one is above the law.»
Trump was later acquitted by the Senate.
Gov. Abigail Spanberger, meanwhile, is stressing Lucas’ presumption of innocence after calling congressional defenses of Trump’s handling of classified documents «deeply detrimental to our national security,» days after his 2023 indictment in a case that was ultimately dismissed without a trial.
Lucas, who also chairs the powerful Senate Finance and Appropriations Committee, was indicted alongside six others in what federal prosecutors allege was a yearslong criminal enterprise involving marijuana distribution, money laundering, bribery and fraud. She has denied wrongdoing, and an indictment does not establish guilt. The investigation that ultimately produced the charges began during the Biden administration, according to multiple reports.
The contrasting rhetoric extends beyond individual officeholders. The Democratic Party of Virginia (DPVA) declared Trump had been «rightfully indicted» and that «no one is above the law» immediately after a Manhattan grand jury indicted him in March 2023, more than a year before a jury heard the case.
The party had also criticized Republican claims that federal law enforcement was being politically «weaponized» against Trump during the classified-documents investigation. Lucas currently serves as a DPVA vice chair.
TOP SPANBERGER ALLY TARGETED IN FBI CORRUPTION PROBE HAS LONG HISTORY OF CONTROVERSY
Rep. Suhas Subramanyam, D-Va., was the only Democrat contacted by Digital who responded to questions about the contrast between his past rhetoric about Trump and his current rhetoric about Lucas, rejecting the suggestion that his positions were inconsistent while accusing federal law enforcement of politically timing Lucas’ arrest.
«It doesn’t matter if you’re a Democrat or Republican, the American people deserve answers and accountability from everyone,» Subramanyam told Digital.
Subramanyam called the charges against Lucas «serious,» adding that «she should face justice if they are true,» while alleging that «the DOJ and FBI timed this arrest for two weeks before the election for political reasons.»
«Trump has a pattern of targeting political opponents and weaponizing the DOJ, and he has spent his second presidency covering up the Epstein files,» Subramanyam said.
«It took Congress forcing the administration’s hand to even get a fraction of the full files released.»
VIRGINIA DEMS SPLIT ON DOJ PROBE OF SOROS-BACKED DA ACCUSED OF GIVING ‘SWEETHEART DEALS’ TO ILLEGAL ALIENS
The federal investigation that produced Lucas’ indictment, however, predates Trump’s second administration. The Washington Post, CBS News and The Associated Press reported after federal searches in Ma, that the probe began during the Biden administration, citing anonymous sources familiar with the investigation.
U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche reiterated that the investigation began years ago and rejected allegations of political retaliation.
«We don’t do political paybacks,» Blanche said.
Federal prosecutors allege Lucas led a criminal enterprise involving relatives and associates that distributed marijuana and laundered proceeds while she used her political position to protect the operation and influence legislation that could financially benefit it. The indictment alleges Lucas and her co-defendants were involved in distributing at least 100 kilograms of marijuana, while FBI Director Kash Patel said the alleged scheme generated roughly $4.5 million.
Lucas has denied wrongdoing and accused the federal government of trying to silence her.

«Today, the FBI, the Department of Justice and the full weight of the federal government have been wielded against an 82-year-old great-grandmother,» Lucas said after surrendering to authorities.
«I grew up under Jim Crow. I’ve seen what happens when people in power try to silence those who stand up to them.
«I will not be bullied,» she added. «And I will not back down.»
