El arresto de un médico dominicano sin licencia en Nueva York generó repercusión en la comunidad hispana del Bronx tras la muerte de una joven que habría recibido un tratamiento antienvejecimiento.

Luis Rojas Cabrera, propietario y director del Bereshit Lifestyle Center, fue detenido el domingo después de que una paciente de 27 años falleciera en circunstancias que aún investiga la policía, según informó el medio dominicano Diario Libre con base en datos del Daily Mail y Daily News.

La investigación policial apunta a que la víctima fue trasladada en estado crítico desde el centro de salud, ubicado en Riverdale, hasta el NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital, donde fue declarada muerta. La llamada de emergencia se produjo a la 1:10 de la tarde y, de acuerdo con la información recabada por Diario Libre, la mujer había recibido en el centro una “solución de terapia antienvejecimiento” poco antes de sufrir la emergencia médica.

Las autoridades mantienen bajo reserva la identidad de la fallecida, mientras avanzan los análisis forenses que determinarán la causa exacta del deceso.

El acusado, Luis Rojas Cabrera, enfrenta cargos por imprudencia temeraria y por ejercer la medicina sin autorización en Estados Unidos. Según Diario Libre, el Bereshit Lifestyle Center se especializaba en medicina integrativa y terapias naturales, a cargo de Rojas Cabrera, quien, según su perfil profesional, se formó en la Universidad Tecnológica de Santiago (UTESA) en la República Dominicana y obtuvo el título de cirujano en el Hospital Salvador B. Gautier, en Santo Domingo.

En el sitio web del centro, Rojas Cabrera asegura haber realizado más de 6.000 cirugías y haber colaborado en la formación de más de 100 médicos en su país natal. Además, indica que recibió formación en cirugía de cabeza y cuello, bariátrica, laparoscópica y medicina alternativa en Israel, Francia, Puerto Rico y México. El médico también afirma poseer certificaciones de la American Association of Drugless Practitioners (AADP), asociación estadounidense de profesionales de prácticas no farmacológicas, y de la American Alternative Medical Association (AAMA), asociación estadounidense de medicina alternativa.

Diario Libre detalla que el centro dirigido por Rojas Cabrera promocionaba productos y tratamientos para el bienestar y la prevención de enfermedades, orientados a la comunidad hispana de Nueva York. En una de sus descripciones públicas, el establecimiento aseguraba que seleccionaba “cuidadosamente todos los productos” con el objetivo de ofrecer acceso a “innovaciones” en salud holística.

De acuerdo con la policía, la administración de la solución antienvejecimiento a la joven precedió de forma directa a la crisis que derivó en su fallecimiento. Informó Diario Libre: “La autopsia determinará la causa de la muerte, tras lo cual las autoridades podrían presentar cargos más graves contra el médico”. Las pesquisas se centran en establecer si el centro cumplía con las normativas locales y si el procedimiento aplicado a la víctima contaba con el aval de las autoridades sanitarias del estado.

El perfil profesional de Luis Rojas Cabrera incluye afirmaciones sobre su experiencia como jefe de residentes y jefe de urgencias en hospitales dominicanos, así como colaboraciones con universidades y clínicas en República Dominicana, Puerto Rico, El Salvador, México y Estados Unidos. Sin embargo, las autoridades confirmaron que el acusado no poseía sin licencia para ejercer en Nueva York ni autorización para realizar procedimientos médicos en ese estado.

La muerte de la joven y el arresto de Rojas Cabrera han causado impacto en la comunidad dominicana de Nueva York. Las autoridades advirtieron que podrían formalizar cargos adicionales dependiendo de los hallazgos de la autopsia y de la revisión de los antecedentes del centro de salud involucrado.

The Supreme Court agreed Monday to hear an Alaska man’s challenge to the state’s effort to confiscate his plane over a six-pack of beer, setting the stage for a case that could upend the ability of law enforcement to impose asset forfeiture.

Kenneth Jouppi, now 82, was operating a one-man air taxi service using his personally-owned 1969 Cessna plane in 2012 when Alaska state troopers executed a search warrant on his plane and found alcohol on board, including one six-pack that they said was plainly visible. At the time, Jouppi was on a runway in Fairbanks preparing to take a customer and her groceries to the remote village of Beaver near the center of the state.

Having beer on board wasn’t illegal on its own. However, since Beaver had banned the possession or sale of alcohol within its limits, Jouppi was convicted of alcohol importation, a misdemeanor. The Alaska Supreme Court held that, under the alcohol importation ban, the state was required to confiscate Jouppi’s Cessna.

Jouppi has since argued in court that the state’s seizure of his plane, valued at $95,000, runs afoul of the 8th Amendment’s ban on excessive fines. Now, the Supreme Court will weigh in on whether he’s right.

When ruling on Jouppi’s case, the court will have the opportunity to seriously rein in the ability of state and local governments to impose asset forfeiture — a longtime goal of civil libertarians.

«For centuries, English common law took into account the characteristics of the defendant and his or her specific violation in determining excessiveness,» a trio of scholars working for the libertarian Cato Institute wrote of the case. «When courts lose touch with the original understanding of a fundamental right, they risk watering down the constitutional protections that must be afforded to everyday people. Such dilution of rights is especially dangerous today as governments generate billions of dollars in revenue through civil and criminal asset forfeiture.»

«This case gives the Supreme Court the opportunity to ensure that the people are afforded the protection that the Eighth Amendment promises them,» they added.

Alaska, however, argues that confiscating the planes of those who facilitate illegal imports is the only way the state can meaningfully prevent the problems caused by alcoholism in its remote regions.

«Alcohol abuse is a serious problem in rural Alaska, and airplanes are sometimes the only realistic means to commit the crime of alcohol importation,» a legal brief from the state reads. «Jouppi was convicted for his own knowing and intentional misconduct, and forfeiture removes the business asset that was the means used to commit the offense.»

Some villages in Alaska are not connected to major road networks, making them primarily accessible by small planes, such as the one owned by Jouppi.

A trial court in 2018 ruled that the state taking Jouppi’s plane would be an excessive fine under the Constitution, though the Alaska Supreme Court ultimately decided otherwise in 2025, leaving the United States Supreme Court as the one-time pilot’s only remaining outlet for recourse.

Oral arguments in Jouppi’s case are likely to take place either later this year or early next year, with a decision expected to come down by next summer.

Social media influencers Andrew and Tristan Tate will remain behind bars for now after appearing in federal court in Miami Monday, where they formally began fighting the United Kingdom’s bid to extradite the controversial brothers on dozens of charges, including rape and human trafficking.

During the brief hearing, U.S. Magistrate Judge Lauren Louis informed the brothers they were being held on a provisional arrest warrant from the U.K. and that extradition proceedings were already underway. 

The judge later scheduled a status hearing for July 27 as the brothers prepare to challenge both the extradition request and whether they should remain in custody while the case moves forward.

Attorney Joseph McBride told reporters that the brothers are innocent and said he does not expect them to be released.

«There will be a series of hearings,» McBride said of the extradition process.

Andrew and Tristan Tate appeared wearing gray jail uniforms and shackles and each responded, «Yes, your honor,» when Judge Louis advised them of their rights. 

The judge also explained that the proceeding was an extradition matter, not a criminal trial, and that the brothers would not be required to attend every hearing.

The brothers were arrested in Miami over the weekend after British authorities announced 38 additional charges involving four additional alleged victims.

Andrew Tate, 39, faces seven additional rape counts, as well as charges related to sex trafficking and indecent images of a child. Tristan Tate, 38, faces charges including two rape counts and three counts of arranging or facilitating trafficking for sexual exploitation.

British police said the new allegations bring the total number of charges against the brothers to 59. The alleged offenses are said to have occurred between July 2010 and August 2017.

«We have decided to prosecute Andrew and Tristan Tate for further offenses including rape, arranging or facilitating trafficking for sexual exploitation and offences relating to indecent images of a child,» Malcolm McHaffie, head of the Crown Prosecution Service’s Special Crime Division, said.

The Tate brothers, who hold dual U.S. and British citizenship, have denied wrongdoing.

They also face separate criminal proceedings in Romania, where authorities have been investigating them since December 2022.

The brothers have built a large online following promoting their views on masculinity and wealth, while Andrew Tate has previously described himself as a misogynist.

Andrew Tate is additionally due to face a civil trial in Britain brought by four women who accuse him of physical and sexual abuse.

The four claimants, who have been granted anonymity, allege Tate subjected them to physical or sexual violence between 2013 and 2015. Two say they were in an intimate relationship with Tate, while two worked for his online webcam business.

Andrew Tate denies those allegations. In his written defense, his lawyers said the claims are false and that all sexual activity was consensual.
