AUSCHWITZ: A Holocaust survivor from Canada has warned about growing antisemitism in his country, calling on the nation’s leaders to take action against perpetrators.
Nate Leipciger spoke at the annual March of the Living at Auschwitz in Poland on Tuesday as thousands gathered to commemorate those killed in the Holocaust against a backdrop of growing antisemitism in the world.
The 98-year-old said he was recently targeted in Toronto when mezuzahs (sacred parchment scrolls) were forcibly removed from apartment doors in his building.
The violence increased in March when his synagogue was also targeted in a drive-by shooting. «The front doors and lobby were destroyed. It is terrible that we have lost our sense of security,» Leipciger told Fox News Digital.

«Once you lose that, you no longer know when or where the next attack might occur. It is deeply troubling to live in a free, democratic country — where everyone is meant to have equal rights — and to be persecuted in this way,» he added.
Born in Poland in 1928, Leipciger was deported to Auschwitz in 1943. He survived multiple camps and a death march before being liberated in 1945, later immigrating to Canada in 1948.
The only way to prevent history from repeating itself, he said, is to advocate for the truth and confront deception and lies.

«The running is over. For centuries, we ran. We have to stand up for our right to live as Jews in any country, including Israel, as free citizens enjoying the fruits of Western culture, of which we are part,» he added.
Since the Hamas-led Oct. 7, 2023, massacre, Canada has seen a sharp rise in antisemitism, with B’nai Brith Canada reporting 6,219 incidents in 2024 — more than double the number recorded in 2022.
While figures for 2025 have yet to be released, Public Safety Canada noted that from April to June 2025, «Among hate crimes targeting religion… the majority were directed at the Jewish community (69%).»

Canadian Jewish communities are «extremely concerned» about a surge in antisemitism, a reality conveyed by Israeli officials both privately and publicly to Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government.
«We are aware of extreme concern among Jewish communities in Canada about their safety and well-being, both as individuals and as communities, including their institutions,» Israeli Ambassador to Ottawa Ido Moed told Fox News Digital. «Israel views the recent attacks against synagogues as very serious and considers Canada among the high-risk countries in terms of shooting incidents.»

Moed said Israel has offered to expand cooperation with Canada across areas including education and security coordination, and has initiated roundtable discussions on policy, regulation and best practices.
U.S. Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism Yehuda Kaploun told Fox News Digital at Auschwitz that leadership accountability is critical to confronting antisemitism.
«It is incumbent upon law enforcement in various countries to designate terrorist organizations, as we have done with certain aspects of the Muslim Brotherhood and Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The world should do so collectively, and America is leading the way in that battle,» Kaploun said.
Earlier this month, shots were fired at a Jewish-owned restaurant in Toronto during Passover. In March, Israel’s minister of Diaspora affairs and combating antisemitism, Amichai Chikli, sent a letter urging Ottawa to increase efforts to protect Jewish communities after three synagogues in the Toronto area were hit by gunfire within just one week.

Richard Marceau, senior vice president of strategic initiatives and general counsel at the Center for Israel and Jewish Affairs, noted that Jewish Canadians are 25 times more likely than any other group to be victims of hate crimes.
«What we have seen in Canada is an all-level systemic failure to address Jew-hatred,» he told Fox News Digital.
«Confronting this crisis is essential not only to protect the Jewish community, but to safeguard the future of the Canadian way of life,» he continued. «All levels of government must do more to protect Canadians, including ensuring robust and consistent enforcement of existing laws, improving transparency in prosecutorial decisions, strengthening support – including financially – for community security, and addressing the drivers of radicalization in Canada.»
SanJaya Wijayakoon, an RCMP superintendent in Vancouver who joined a global law enforcement delegation on the March of the Living, said engagement with the Jewish community is central to policing.

«A big part of our work is to build contacts and maintain strong relationships through which we can receive information, provide advice and guidance on ensuring safety, and, if something crosses the line into criminality, investigate it fully,» he said.
«I think as the years pass, fewer and fewer people within the police understand what happened in 1945 in Europe. Being in this program and on this march allows us to return and speak to our people about what I learned and observed, and they can apply it in their day-to-day work,» he added.
Sylvan Adams, president of the World Jewish Congress Israel Region, pointed to the recent synagogue shootings in Toronto and criticized the government’s response as insufficient.
«I would like to see the prime minister properly define the problem and stop pussyfooting around, pretending radical Islam does not exist,» Adams said.

«We are under attack. Foreign actors are operating in Western countries in three areas: they are sending radical imams into mosques, they are investing massive amounts of money in educational systems and they are targeting us on social media. I find the response by Western leaders, with the exception of President Trump, to be entirely lacking,» he said.
«Everyone in the West needs to wake up. They are trying to take away our freedom. It starts with the Jews but never ends with the Jews,» he added.

Venezuela se convierte en el Teatro de Operaciones del Comando Sur de Estados Unidos: una señal para China y Rusia
Este fin de semana Estados Unidos logró hacer una demostración de fuerza militar con la que se posiciona en la región, convirtiendo a Venezuela en el Teatro de Operaciones del Comando Sur –autorizada por el régimen de Delcy Rodríguez– que busca dar “respuestas militares rápidas” en caso de conflicto, dar confianza y protección a las inversiones petroleras norteamericanas.
Este sábado dos helicópteros gigantes tipo MV-22B Osprey del servicio militar estadounidense dirigidos por el comandante del SouthCom, el general Francis L. Donovan, sobrevolaron la capital venezolana, para realizar “un simulacro de evacuación” en la Embajada de Estados Unidos, lo que pareció más bien el desembarco de comandos de élite de asalto fuertemente armados que una simple extracción de personal diplomático.
Ante la mirada atónita de los caraqueños, el sobrevuelo de los poderosos Osprey de la Armada, que comenzó a las 10 de la mañana, recordó la operación de la madrugada del 3 de enero pasado cuando el mismo equipo aeronaval capturó a Nicolás Maduro y su mujer Cilia Flores y luego los transportó para ser juzgados por narcoterrorismo en Nueva York.
La operación de los helicópteros, conocidos como águilas espías o águilas pescadoras, contó con un apoyo logístico impresionante: el crucero lanzamisiles USS Lake Erie (CG-70) y el buque de asalto anfibio USS Iwo Jima, que fondeó a seis millas náuticas de Catia La Mar, la zona costera de Caracas.
Para tranquilizar a la población, la Embajada de Estados Unidos aclaró que «seguimos comprometidos con garantizar la implementación del plan de tres fases del presidente Donald Trump, particularmente la estabilización de Venezuela, y con la importancia de la seguridad compartida en todo el hemisferio occidental. Estados Unidos está comprometido con una Venezuela libre, segura y próspera para el pueblo venezolano, los Estados Unidos y el hemisferio occidental».
Esta es la segunda visita del comando de élite de la Armada estadounidense en Caracas. Y su propósito, según una fuente militar venezolana que pidió a Clarín el anonimato, es que los Estados Unidos “están ejecutando una presión multidominio, control de nodos estratégicos, dominación cognitiva, demostraciones calibradas de fuerza, degradación psicológica del adversario, preservación de gobernabilidad y manejo simultáneo del plano diplomático, militar y narrativo”.
En su opinión y desde una perspectiva híbrida, el ejercicio aéreo en Caracas, la presencia del Uited Southern Command y el despliegue del USS Iwo Jima en el Caribe, “no debe interpretarse únicamente como un ejercicio militar sino como un mensaje estratégico multinivel”.
La fuente militar señaló que no es solo una demostración táctica, “sino psicológica y política. Los MV-22 Osprey aterrizando en Caracas tienen un enorme valor simbólico. No buscan derrotar militarmente a nadie; buscan instalar percepción de capacidad, alcance y libertad operativa. Es decir: “podemos entrar, salir, evacuar, insertar fuerzas y operar en el corazón político del país”.
El mensaje implícito hacia mandos militares, estructuras de inteligencia, operadores económicos y redes de apoyo es que Washington “tiene presencia, tiene acceso, posee sobre todo superioridad logística y posee capacidad de escalada rápida si fuese necesario”.
El simulacro aeronaval también es un primer paso para la instalación futura de bases militares con la aprobación de las autoridades interinas. «Es complementario y necesario. Esta es una etapa de proyección gradual para resguardar la protección de las instalaciones petroleras que va desde la presión psicológica a la narrativa, agregó la fuente.
Hasta ahora, el régimen de Delcy Rodríguez ha autorizado la presencia militar de EE.UU., lo que también ha generado críticas en las filas chavistas por la supuesta pérdida de soberanía. Pero la fuente sostiene que Venezuela ya ha perdido soberanía bajo el régimen chavista.
“La soberanía del país y de las FANB no existe desde antes del 3 de enero. Venezuela ha estado plagada por el ELN y la disidencia de las FARC. Con Maduro la fuerza armada bolivariana se desmovilizó, aquí gobiernan las guerrillas y el Tren de Aragua, la organización delincuencial, por lo que no se puede hablar de soberanía”, subraya la fuente.
El propósito de la presencia militar en Venezuela es ir “desmantelando nodos de forma gradual y progresiva con la aprobación de las autoridades interinas. Para eso son necesarias y complementarias las bases militares”, explicó la fuente militar venezolana. Así para acometer estas tareas el país se convierte en el Teatro de Operaciones del Comando Sur, desplazando además a Rusia, China e Irán, hasta ahora los principales proveedores de armamento del régimen.

Nuevos incidentes en Bolivia: manifestantes se enfrentaron con la policía en el centro de La Paz
En medio de incidentes, miles de manifestantes marcharon este lunes en La Paz, sede de gobierno de Bolivia, para exigir la renuncia del presidente Rodrigo Paz, en el inicio de la cuarta semana de protestas que provocaron una creciente escasez de combustible, alimentos y medicinas.
Los enfrentamientos ocurrieron en el centro de La Paz, donde los manifestantes utilizaron petardos y dinamitas, mientras la Policía respondió con gases lacrimógenos para dispersar las protestas, dijo el diario La Razón.
Los manifestantes intentaron rebasar el cordón policial e ingresar a la plaza Murillo, donde se encuentra la sede de gobierno. La Policía intentó despejar algunas calles del centro de la ciudad. El Comando Departamental de La Paz alertó sobre la presencia de personas con pasamontañas, palos y posibles explosivos, según el periódico.
La agencia de noticias AFP reportó una decena de detenidos. Por la tarde, la ciudad retornó a la calma.
Mientras tanto, vecinos de El Alto bloquearon la entrada y salida de vehículos y pasajeros del Aeropuerto Internacional de El Alto, reportó Brújula Digital.
“¿Qué queremos? ¡Que renuncie!, ¿Cuándo? ¡Ahora!”, gritan campesinos, obreros y transportistas, que detonan petardos mientras bajan hacia La Paz desde la ciudad vecina de El Alto.
El mandatario centroderechista, de 58 años, enfrenta la mayor protesta social en su corta gestión que comenzó en noviembre pasado, ante la crisis económica que atraviesa el país.

Los manifestantes rechazan la política económica liberal de Paz, le exigen aumentos salariales y lo culpan de la distribución de nafta de mala calidad que dañó miles de vehículos.

En un discurso que pronunció en la sureña ciudad de Sucre, en un aniversario cívico, el presidente boliviano llamó de nuevo este lunes al diálogo a las organizaciones que lideran las protestas.
No obstante, Paz descartó dialogar contra manifestantes radicales que usen la violencia.

“Una minoría no puede gobernar, una minoría no nos puede abusar y haremos cumplir claramente la Constitución”, advirtió.
El domingo, Paz debía comenzar un diálogo con un sindicato de campesinos, pero la reunión no se realizó por los enfrentamientos del sábado con la policía.
Los incidentes se produjeron en medio de operativos del gobierno para habilitar un corredor que permitiera el ingreso a La Paz y El Alto de alimentos, medicina y combustible.
La carestía de productos básicos también se registra en otras ciudades, como Oruro (oeste), Potosí (suroeste) y Cochabamba (centro).
Rodrigo Paz recudirá a la mitad su salario y el de sus ministros
En tanto, el presidente anunció que reducirá a la mitad su salario y el de sus ministros como parte de un “esfuerzo y compromiso” con el país.
“Este presidente, junto a sus ministros, ha asumido la decisión, como parte del esfuerzo y el compromiso con el país, de rebajarse el salario al 50 %”, aseguró Paz durante la conmemoración de los 217 años de la gesta libertaria de Sucre, la capital constitucional de Bolivia y sede del órgano Judicial en el sur del país.
Hasta antes de esta decisión, el mandatario boliviano percibía un salario de 24.978 bolivianos (3617 dólares). Ningún otro funcionario puede ganar más que el presidente. Con la reducción, la remuneración presidencial quedará en unos 12.489 bolivianos (1808 dólares).
Paz mencionó que esa decisión no afectará a “otras áreas ni a profesionales”, ya que la intención no es “perjudicar” a esos trabajadores, sino buscar que “los mejores” permanezcan en el servicio público.
Asimismo, anunció que en estos días el Ejecutivo presentará al Parlamento el proyecto de ley del “perdonazo tributario” que, según enfatizó, “no es para los ricos” sino para sectores como comerciantes, transportistas y artesanos, entre otros, para que puedan “reactivar” su economía.
Paz indicó que la norma favorecerá a quienes, desde 2017, fueron acumulando multas en el sistema tributario, para que puedan utilizar esos recursos para dar un impulso a sus negocios.

President Masoud Pezeshkian invoked one of Iran’s strongest wartime symbols on May 24, signaling Tehran’s resolve to hold its ground against the U.S. and Israel across the region, a counterterrorism expert said.
The Iranian leader’s remarks came at a key moment in diplomacy, as President Donald Trump said a deal with Tehran to end the war is «largely negotiated» and warned the U.S. would either sign «a great and meaningful» agreement or walk away entirely.
While Iran signaled broad agreement with Washington on some points, it said a final deal is not imminent and that negotiations over the remaining details are still underway.

In an X post marking the anniversary of the 1982 recapture of Khorramshahr from Iraqi forces during the Iran-Iraq War, Pezeshkian said, «Khorramshahr today is Iran, the Persian Gulf, and the Strait of Hormuz,» adding that «resistance, self-sacrifice, and repelling aggression are rooted in the culture of this land.»
Analysts claimed Pezeshkian was deliberately invoking one of the deepest ideological touchstones of the Islamic Republic — the battle that came to symbolize national resistance, civilian sacrifice and defiance against invasion.
«This is the Iran-Iraq War reference, and the timing is the point,» said Dr. Omar Mohammed, director of the Antisemitism Research Initiative Program on Extremism at George Washington University.
May 24 marks the anniversary of the 1982 liberation of Khorramshahr, the southwestern city Saddam Hussein captured early in the war and Iranian forces retook after months of brutal urban combat.

«He’s mapping the 1980-82 defensive-war frame onto the current confrontation: Iran attacked by an aggressor, ordinary citizens (‘battle-untested but brave’) expected to stand and fight, with ‘resistance, sacrifice, repelling aggression’ cast as the cultural default mode.»
Some of the phrasing, Mohammed said, also evokes volunteer and Basij fighters versus a professional invading army. The analyst noted that Pezeshkian’s «Hormuz line» comment reflects a standard Iranian escalation tactic.

«Invoking the strait inside a wartime-mobilization frame — even rhetorically — is a deliberate signal, not throat-clearing,» he added.
«The Khorramshahr frame is the deepest register the regime has. It’s what they reach for to signal existential war, not a managed crisis.»

Mohammed explained that Pezeshkian’s X post is framing the current confrontation from the presidential account to send a «high-stakes message.»
«It’s also a tell on internal posture: Khorramshahr, in short, means ‘we are being invaded and we will not negotiate,’» he added.
