Macron takes the stage uninvited at Africa summit to scold crowd for ‘total lack of respect’

French President Emmanuel Macron sparked a firestorm of criticism after he interrupted a youth-focused session at the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi on Monday, publicly scolding attendees for talking over speakers and calling the disruption «a total lack of respect.»
Video from the event showed Macron rising from his seat and walking onto the stage during the «Africa Forward: Creation in Motion» session, which featured artists and young entrepreneurs speaking about culture and innovation.
«Excuse me, everybody. Hey, hey, hey,» Macron told the audience. «I’m sorry, guys. But it’s impossible to speak about culture, to have people like that super inspired, coming here, making a speech with such a noise.»
«So this is a total lack of respect,» he continued. «I suggest if you want to have bilateral or speak about somebody else, I mean something else, you have bilateral rooms, or you go outside. If you want to stay here, we listen to the people, and we’re playing the same game.»

Macron was immediately criticized for his uninvited remarks on social media. A former member of Parliament from Zimbabwe, Fadzayi Mahere, called the French leader out on X. «Respectfully @EmmanuelMacron I don’t believe that it’s courteous or appropriate for you to come onto our Continent and talk down at people like this. They are not your kids. Don’t be condescending. Imagine if a guest of the state did the same in your country? Would it fly? I don’t think so.»
Another post from a Kenyan-Canadian lawyer with 3.1 million followers announced, «Africans don’t need @EmmanuelMacron’s permission to speak in Africa,» said Dr. Miguna Miguna, who in January announced he was running for the Kenyan presidency in 2027, according to local reports.
A report published Monday by Modern Ghana, the interruption carried a symbolic irony, as Macron had traveled to Kenya to promote what Paris describes as a more equal and respectful partnership with African nations, moving away from what critics have long viewed as a paternalistic post-colonial model.
The incident took place during the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi, where more than 30 African leaders, business executives and young entrepreneurs gathered for discussions focused on economic development, innovation and cooperation between Africa and Europe.
Kenya’s Standard Media reported that the exchange «cast an unusual shadow» over the summit, noting that some civil society groups characterized the two-day summit as a «reengineering of imperialism.»
The moment underscored the balancing act facing Macron as France attempts to redefine its relationship with Africa following years of political tensions and military withdrawals from several West African countries.

Earlier Monday, Macron told students at the University of Nairobi that «Africa is succeeding» and argued the continent needs investment to strengthen its sovereignty rather than dependence on development aid, according to Modern Ghana’s report by Mustapha Bature Sallama. The report also noted Macron acknowledged France’s own financial constraints during the remarks.
Macron has increasingly emphasized partnerships with African youth, entrepreneurs and cultural leaders as Paris recalibrates its Africa strategy amid growing competition from Russia, China and Turkey for influence across the continent.

Hay ideas que nacen para resolver problemas. Y hay ideas que nacen para distraernos de ellos. La ocurrencia del “Nuevo Nuevo León” de Samuel García pertenece claramente a la segunda categoría. Porque antes de preguntarnos si necesitamos un “Nuevo” Nuevo León, conviene responder una pregunta sencilla: ¿qué tenía de malo el original?
¿Acaso el Nuevo León que construyó algunas de las empresas más importantes de México estaba equivocado? ¿El que levantó universidades de clase mundial? ¿El que convirtió la palabra empeñada en un activo económico? ¿El que hizo del trabajo duro una forma de identidad colectiva? La respuesta es evidente: nada.
Por eso la idea misma de un “Nuevo Nuevo León” resulta tan extraña. No responde a una necesidad social real. Responde a una obsesión contemporánea por la novedad. El filósofo francés Gilles Lipovetsky describió cómo la novedad dejó de ser un medio para mejorar las cosas y se convirtió en un fin en sí mismo. Lo importante ya no es que algo funcione mejor; lo importante es que parezca nuevo: vanidad y frivolidad pura.
Y pocas cosas son más peligrosas para la política que confundir novedad con progreso. Las sociedades no avanzan cambiándose de nombre. Avanzan resolviendo problemas. Ninguna familia se preocupa porque su estado tenga una identidad insuficientemente moderna. La gente se preocupa por el tráfico, el agua, la seguridad, la contaminación y las oportunidades para sus hijos.
La antropología también tiene algo que decir. Clifford Geertz sostenía que las comunidades necesitan referencias compartidas para entender quiénes son y hacia dónde van. Las identidades fuertes no se reinventan cada seis años. Se construyen durante generaciones. Y Nuevo León es precisamente una de esas identidades fuertes.
No es una marca. No es un logotipo. No es un eslogan. Es una cultura. Es una manera de trabajar. Es una relación particular con el esfuerzo, la responsabilidad y la construcción de patrimonio. Por eso el problema de Nuevo León nunca ha sido su identidad. El problema aparece cuando dejamos de estar a la altura de ella para vivir en Samuelandia y la extorsión como forma de gobierno.
Durante décadas, el prestigio de Nuevo León se construyó sobre valores muy concretos. La palabra valía. Las obras se terminaban. El dinero se cuidaba. La capacidad importaba. La seriedad era una virtud pública. Nadie necesitaba inventar un Nuevo Nuevo León porque el verdadero funcionaba.
De hecho, la idea del “Nuevo Nuevo León” termina pareciéndose a esas versiones pirata que cualquiera reconoce de inmediato. Se parecen al original. Intentan copiar su apariencia. Dan el gatazo. Pero no están hechas de la misma tela. No duran igual. No resisten igual. No aguantan la friega. Y ahí es donde la discusión deja de ser semántica para convertirse en una discusión política de fondo.
Porque defender la Transformación en Nuevo León significa defender lo mejor del Nuevo León original: la cultura del trabajo, la palabra cumplida, la capacidad para gobernar, la honestidad como base de la confianza y la convicción de que la riqueza importa, pero también la forma en que se construye y llega a las familias.
La verdadera discusión que viene para nuestro estado no es entre pasado y futuro. Tampoco entre izquierda y derecha. Mucho menos entre novedad y tradición. La discusión real es entre frivolidad y seriedad. Entre apariencia y resultados. Entre quienes creen que gobernar consiste en administrar percepciones y quienes creemos que gobernar consiste en resolver problemas y materializar una verdadera Transformación.
La Presidenta de México, la Dra. Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, ha planteado para el país una visión de Crecimiento con Justicia. Una visión donde la economía crece, pero donde ese crecimiento también se traduce en bienestar para las familias. Y esa idea dialoga mucho mejor con la tradición histórica de Nuevo León que cualquier intento artificial de reinventarlo.
Porque el Nuevo León que admiramos nunca estuvo peleado con el progreso, la innovación o la inversión. Lo que entendía era algo más profundo: que la prosperidad solo vale cuando se construye con trabajo, responsabilidad y comunidad. Por eso llega un momento en que hay que definirse. Sin medias tintas. Sin ambigüedades. Porque la pregunta ya no es si queremos un “Nuevo” Nuevo León hechizo y hueco.
La pregunta es si queremos recuperar lo mejor del verdadero Nuevo León y llevarlo al siguiente nivel. El de Mariano Escobedo. El de la cultura de la tenacidad. El de Eugenio Garza Sada y el Capitalismo Social. El de las familias que construyeron patrimonio trabajando. El de las universidades que formaron talento de clase mundial. El de las empresas que generaron comunidad además de utilidades. Ese es el proyecto que representa la 4T Norteña.
Y por eso defender la Transformación en Nuevo León es mucho más que una definición partidista. Es una definición sobre qué tipo de estado queremos ser. Porque si se trata de Nuevo León, con el original nos quedamos. Y ahora nos toca demostrar que sigue vivo y lleno de futuro: esa es la tarea.

Trump says vandals used chemicals to damage newly renovated reflecting pool near Lincoln Memorial

President Donald Trump on Friday said vandals damaged the recently renovated reflecting pool near the Lincoln Memorial, adding that authorities are investigating the incident.
Trump’s comments come as the recently renovated reflecting pool faces scrutiny over peeling paint and algae growth just weeks after a $14.8 million restoration project was completed.
«Things are really looking good in our Nation’s Capital, and add to that the fact that when I became President, Crime was rampant, and now, Washington, D.C., is one of the Safest Cities anywhere in the United States,» Trump wrote on Truth Social.
«However, we’ve had some real problems with Vandalism at the beautiful Reflecting Pool, which sits between The Washington Monument and The Lincoln Memorial,» he continued.

«Just like three days ago, they destroyed the grass outside of the Pool, they’ve also done everything possible to hurt the inside surface that was just installed.»
Trump accused vandals of damaging the grounds surrounding the reflecting pool and said they used chemicals to damage the pool’s newly installed surface.
«No different than the chemicals that were used on the National Mall, they used something similar in the Reflecting Pool to try to destroy and demean our beautiful work,» he said.

Trump’s comments come about a week after a large «86 47» message appeared to be etched into the grass near the National Mall between the Washington Monument and the World War II Memorial.
Administration officials previously characterized the message as threatening, arguing that «86» is sometimes used as slang for removing or getting rid of something, while «47» refers to Trump as the nation’s 47th president.
Trump announced on June 6 that the $14.8 million restoration project at the historic reflecting pool had been completed. Days later, however, algae appeared throughout the pool, masking portions of the newly restored «American flag blue» bottom.

This week, the National Park Service and contractors deployed chemicals and ozone nanobubbles to help mitigate the algae growth.
Workers also used a swimming pool-style vacuum system to remove algae from the bottom of the pool.
«There are no harmful side effects to marine life or to the environment,» the park service said in a statement this week.

Trump said most of the algae had been removed and that the vandalized area would be repaired by next week.
«The algae is 75% gone, and the condition will soon be completely remedied, and the area that was vandalized, fortunately, is just a small area of damage, and will be fixed early next week,» Trump said.
He also said law enforcement is actively investigating the alleged vandalism. Images posted on social media Friday showed National Guard personnel and U.S. Park Police officers patrolling the area.

Videos posted on social media also appeared to show people gathered near the Reflecting Pool criticizing the renovation project and celebrating the algae growth.
