Neonatologist sounds alarm over Massachusetts abortion law allowing procedures up to birth: ‘Very disturbing’

Massachusetts’ sweeping move to expand abortion rights up to birth is facing fierce criticism nationwide, with one neonatologist calling it «very disturbing» that life-and-death decisions are being made based on limited prenatal information.
In an interview with Fox News Digital, Dr. Robin Pierucci, a co-chair of the American College of Pediatricians’ Pro-Life Council, said she could not «reconcile» the newly signed law, which she said is ironically named the Prioritizing Patient Access to Care Act.
The bill, signed by Gov. Maura Healey last week, eliminates the state’s previous 24-week gestational limit on abortion, making the deep-blue state the 10th to permit the procedure up to birth. Scheduled to take effect in less than 90 days, the law will allow terminations to be performed based on a physician’s professional judgment.

As a doctor who cares for newborns facing serious health complications, Pierucci said that even when a baby’s condition cannot be cured, doctors still have an absolute «obligation to care» and should not simply turn to pregnancy termination.
«If it was really about healthcare, then it would be about protecting both the mom and the baby. And if we’re really about healthcare, it would also be about if there’s a problem that was identified — it will be about removing barriers for helping this baby live well,» she said.
«Voting one off the island because there was a suspected diagnosis is just inconsistent to do no harm.»

Pierucci cited several concerns with eliminating gestational limits, including potentially inaccurate prenatal screening results that can mislead parents into considering abortion, advances in medical technology that can help babies born as early as 22 weeks and the ethical dilemmas the law could create for medical professionals.
Parents are increasingly offered pregnancy termination based on prenatal screening tests that can produce misleading or inaccurate results, Pierucci said.
«There’s something called the spectrum of disease, meaning I can’t tell usually from just a picture how much or how little the patient’s going to be affected,» she said. «This thing is going on frequently. It’s very disturbing that we’re making life and death decisions with so little information.»

Pierucci warned that screening tests have become routine, but typically provide percentage-based probabilities rather than complete diagnostic certainty. As a result, parents may make irreversible decisions without fully understanding what the test actually indicates or how severely their child could be affected.
As a neonatologist who routinely cares for extremely premature babies born at the edge of viability, typically between 22 and 24 weeks, Pierucci warned that the measure creates an ethical contradiction for doctors who work to save premature babies born within that window.
A baby at 24 weeks’ gestation is just over halfway through a full-term pregnancy. Roughly the size of a hand, the baby would have fingernails, eyelashes and rapidly developing brain activity, marking a significant milestone in fetal viability.
For babies diagnosed with fatal or severe conditions, Pierucci advocates for perinatal palliative care, which surrounds families with medical and emotional support while focusing on helping the infant remain comfortable for whatever time they have.
She described perinatal palliative care as a compassionate and active form of clinical care, rejecting the idea that medical care is only useful if it can result in a complete cure.

«Even if we don’t have the ability to fully heal something… I always have an obligation to care,» she said.
Because the law does not account for alternative approaches, practitioners with conscientious objections to abortion can face ethical conflicts, Pierucci said.
«When we have laws that fail to meet an ethical standard, we risk moral trauma to those who have a conscientious objection to this. This is not consistent with their value system.»
Ultimately, Pierucci said she opposes abortion regardless of gestational age, arguing that the value of a baby’s life does not change based on how far along a pregnancy has progressed.
«I don’t give it different value at different points in gestation,» she said.
An early abortion does not make a mother hurt any less, she said, «It just meant her baby was dead sooner, which is heartbreaking to hear.»
Healey’s office did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

La participación de esos compradores alcanzó el 57% del segmento residencial superior a $120.000, el nivel más alto de la serie elaborada por la firma consultora.
Los extranjeros que participan en ese mercado buscan principalmente una inversión o una residencia para el retiro, se indica.
Estados Unidos pasó a liderar la demanda internacional durante los primeros tres meses de 2026.
Los compradores de ese país destinaron $33,6 millones a operaciones inmobiliarias, con un crecimiento de 53% respecto del mismo período del año anterior.
El resultado marcó la primera ocasión en que Estados Unidos superó a Colombia y Venezuela, los dos países que habían encabezado históricamente la demanda extranjera de vivienda en Panamá.
La mediana del precio de venta también distingue a los compradores estadounidenses y europeos. Para los primeros se ubicó en $259.000, mientras que entre los europeos llegó a $310.000.
La actividad vinculada con los expatriados no se limita a la compra de inmuebles. La consultora calcula que los extranjeros residentes con ingresos mensuales superiores a $4.000 generan un gasto corriente anual de $990 millones.

La firma plantea que la capacidad de atender esas necesidades puede definir qué países captan una porción mayor de la demanda regional por movilidad, retiro e inversión residencial.
El flujo turístico mostró un crecimiento de 19,7% interanual en el primer trimestre de 2026. El repunte siguió al incremento de 11,6% registrado durante 2025.
En ese período se consolidó el turismo procedente de Estados Unidos, identificado por Indesa como el de mayor crecimiento desde 2019. Ese movimiento se refleja después en el interés por estadías más largas, inmuebles y residencia.
Manifiesta la consultora que el programa Stopover de Copa Airlines tuvo un papel en la dinamización de ese flujo, según el análisis de la consultora. El turismo es hoy la principal fuente de divisas de Panamá después de la Zona Libre de Colón.
La brecha entre el tránsito aéreo y la llegada efectiva de visitantes muestra un margen de crecimiento. El Aeropuerto Internacional de Tocumen moviliza cerca de 20 millones de pasajeros por año, mientras que Panamá recibe 2,3 millones de turistas internacionales.
Para Indesa, esa diferencia revela una conversión todavía limitada entre los pasajeros que pasan por el país y quienes lo eligen como destino. El desafío, afirma, consiste en transformar una parte mayor de esa conectividad en turismo, estadías prolongadas, residencia e inversión.

FIRST ON FOX — Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is launching a new tipline for Americans to report suspected commercial driver’s license (CDL) fraud as the Trump administration ramps up its crackdown on unqualified truckers following a series of deadly crashes involving illegal immigrants.
ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations announced the official CDL fraud tipline Tuesday, Fox News Digital learned.
Americans can report suspected fraud by calling 866-347-2423.
The new tipline comes as the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Department of Transportation (DOT) have expanded efforts to identify illegal immigrants and other unqualified drivers operating commercial vehicles on American roads.

DHS pointed Fox News Digital to cases involving illegal immigrants who received CDLs from states including California, Massachusetts, New York and Pennsylvania before later being involved in fatal crashes or arrested in connection with other alleged crimes.
«Too many American lives have been lost or permanently changed because illegal aliens who have no business being on our roads have been granted CDLs,» DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin said.

In July, Michael Bon, an illegal immigrant from Haiti who DHS says had been granted a CDL by Massachusetts, allegedly caused a semi-truck crash that killed a Pennsylvania State Trooper.
Another case cited by the department left four people dead in Indiana.

Bekzhan Beishekeev, an illegal immigrant from Kyrgyzstan, swerved into oncoming traffic in February and caused a head-on collision that killed four people, according to DHS. The department said Pennsylvania had granted Beishekeev a commercial driver’s license before the crash. ICE arrested him that month.
In Oregon, Rajinder Kumar, an illegal immigrant from India, jackknifed his trailer in November 2025 in a crash that killed a newlywed couple, according to DHS. The department said Kumar had been granted a CDL by California and was arrested by ICE in April 2026.

And in Florida, Harjinder Singh, an illegal immigrant from India, made an illegal U-turn in a tractor-trailer in August 2025, causing a crash that killed three people, according to DHS. The department said California had granted Singh a CDL.
The tipline is the latest step in a broader federal crackdown on commercial trucking fraud and unqualified drivers.

In August, DHS said the second wave of Operation Highway Shield removed more than 800 truckers from U.S. roads, including 51 illegal immigrants, during a three-day operation.
A separate three-day operation in Oklahoma in October 2025 resulted in the arrests of 120 illegal immigrants, including 91 who were operating commercial vehicles with CDLs, according to DHS.
DHS and DOT have also targeted fraudulent and illegal practices at CDL schools nationwide as part of the Trump administration’s broader crackdown.

Philippines defense chief calls out China after note interrupts remarks at Seoul forum: ‘Coercion, bullying’

Gilberto C. Teodoro, the Defense Secretary for the Philippines, publicly bashed China after he was handed a note outlining China’s position on the South China Sea while he was speaking during the Seoul Defense Dialogue in South Korea on Tuesday.
While Teodoro was in the middle of speaking, a man in a white sports coat walked up behind him and placed a sheet of paper on the table beside him.
«I have a note here, I think this is from China,» Teodoro said, stopping short in his remarks.
«And may I read it?» he asked the crowd, before proceeding to read aloud from the note.
«China’s position on the South China Sea arbitration is clear, consistent and firm. They have no position. The arbitration violates fundamental principles of international law,» the note read.

The note likely referred to the 2016 legal case that the Philippines brought against China under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). The case, titled the South China Sea Arbitration, determined that China was unlawfully reclaiming land in the Philippines’ territorial waters.
China has long rebuked the ruling and consistently accuses the Philippines of infringing on China’s sovereignty in the disputed waters.
The long-running dispute has created a number of tense standoffs between the two countries’ navies.

It not only disrespects, shows, if this is a Chinese position sent to me, it not only disrespects international law, throwing UNCLOS to the floor and trampling upon it, but it also disrespects the basic decency accorded that should be accorded to our most gracious host, the Republic of Korea and the rest of the audience here,» he continued.
