US Army hits 2026 recruiting goals four months early, Pete Hegseth announces at West Point commencement

The United States Army reached its recruiting goals for 2026 four months early, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth revealed during a Saturday commencement speech at the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York.
«Recruitments are up across the joint force, and I’m pleased to announce that just two days ago, the U.S. Army met its 2026 recruiting goals four months early,» Hegseth said.
«A second record year in a row. That means you’re about to train this group right here and lead 61,500 new soldiers. And next year, when we grow the size of the army, it will be even more when you’re out there in your formations as platoon leaders at the tip of the spear, you will be at the tip of the spear of their snapback,» he continued.
In 2025, the Army set a goal of 61,000 and exceeded it with 62,050, according to the Pentagon.

«The men and women who chose to serve our nation are actively showing their commitment to something larger than themselves,» Command Sgt. Maj. Danny Basham, United States Army Recruiting Division command sergeant major, said in a statement. «The nation depends on their strength, character and commitment.»
During Hegseth’s speech, the war secretary also criticized previous military policy of focusing on diversity goals and «anti-American ideologies.»
«They embraced the DEI craze and tried to introduce diversity and inclusion studies, and they hired professors who advocated for anti-American ideologies right here in these halls. But no more. West Point is set apart. It’s special. It’s above politics. Success here is based on merit. It’s how you perform that matters. This is the United States Military Academy,» he said.

«We had generals saying this with a straight face on national television. It was absolute nonsense. Now, these sorts of silly things can be laughed at when they occur in a civilian lounge or civilian faculty lounge, or debated in graduate seminars, but they cannot be tolerated in our formations. These ideas are what get people killed. Diversity is not our strength. Unity is our strength,» Hegseth said, garnering applause.
He continued to praise the graduating cadets and painted a picture of a dangerous world confronting them.

«You’re in a dangerous line of work, and there is no world in which high intensity conflict exists without great pain, agony, sickness, and human tragedy. In this War Department, we raise up warriors. Purpose built, not for good weather, blue skies or fancy parades. We’re built to load up on the back of helicopters, C-17s or Strykers in the dead of night, in fair weather or foul, to go to dangerous places, to engage those who would do our nation and our citizens harm and deliver justice in close and brutal combat on behalf of the American people,» he continued.

«But what makes us different is that we don’t fight because we hate what’s in front of us. We fight because we love what’s behind us. Our family, our freedom and our flag. The battlefield does not grade on a curve, and you can’t throw your pronouns at the enemy. Combat is the ultimate test, and our best Americans must ace it,» Hegseth said.
Hegseth’s speech touched heavily upon faith as he read a verse from Isaiah 6:8. «Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying ‘whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ and I said ‘Here I am! Send me,’» Hegseth read.

«Send me is the timeless, selfless call to service,» he said.
He also invoked Charlie Kirk while imploring the cadets to seek God always.
«As Charlie Kirk often said, ‘Remember always, this too shall pass.’ The good times will pass. The bad times will pass. You’re never as good as you think you are, nor are you as bad as you think you are. Seek God in every circumstance,» he said.
Hegseth delivered his speech Saturday as the U.S. considering resuming fresh military actions against Iran as a peace deal hangs in the balance. The war secretary discussed what was asked of the U.S. military during Operation Epic Fury.
«Your soldiers must be ready for anything because the world is only getting more complex. Just look at what our soldiers have done in just the last few months alone, we’ve asked our airborne and rapid reaction forces to deploy at a moment’s notice to the Middle East, standing as an iron shield to protect American bases and American lives from Iranian proxies. This includes American Army units using HIMARS to help sink the Iranian Navy. I know the Army loves sinking the Navy. That’s the only name navy you’re currently allowed to sink,» Hegseth joked, referencing the known friendly rivalry between the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy.

As Democrats scrambled to abandon embattled candidate Graham Platner, after a rape allegation against him torpedoed his insurgent campaign, one progressive lawmaker said it «was a very easy call» to never back him in the first place.
Rep. Madeleine Dean, D-Pa., had no endorsement to rescind, having been among a small handful of Democrats who publicly warned against Platner amid growing controversies, even as much of the party continued embracing him.
«I’m relieved. I’m sure Mainers are relieved. He disqualified himself,» Dean told Fox News Digital in an interview after Platner announced his intent to drop out of Maine’s Senate race. He later officially dropped out Friday evening.
«Suspending his campaign, he took no accounting for himself,» Dean said, referring to Platner’s 11-minute exit video, in which he fiercely denied the allegations and blamed the Democratic establishment for forcing him from the race.

«That’s not the kind of person we want as a senator,» she continued. «I don’t care if you’re a Republican or a Democrat.»
Dean’s comments echoed a viral CNN interview in early June, when she described the rapidly accumulating controversies surrounding Platner as «distressing» and argued he had already «disqualified himself.»
Her warning came a month before a 41-year-old Maine resident, Jenny Racicot, went public with allegations that Platner, while intoxicated, forced her to have non-consensual sex in 2021. Platner has repeatedly denied her accusation, which was first reported by Politico.
At the time Dean spoke out publicly, Platner was the overwhelming favorite for the Democratic nomination. Few Democrats had publicly broken with him despite a growing list of scandals, including a Nazi-linked tattoo, offensive Reddit posts, infidelity and allegations of misconduct in prior relationships, including an account of physical abuse from Lyndsey Fifield, who dated Platner between 2013 and 2015.
Even Democrats who broke with Platner, including Rep. Jake Auchincloss, D-Mass., drew fierce backlash from supporters who argued they were jeopardizing the party’s effort to unseat incumbent Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine.
«I said in my mind he had disqualified himself in at least two ways. One was the choice to have a Nazi emblem tattooed to his body. And the other was, of course, the credible allegations of his abuse of women,» Dean told Fox News Digital. «So, to me, it was a very easy call. I wasn’t trying to weigh in. I was asked by a CNN reporter and I just said he has disqualified himself. Not a tough call.»

Still, many Democrats continued to defend Platner despite the mounting controversies.
Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., a Platner supporter, said the allegations from ex-girlfriends «seem like a lot of nothing» in an interview with NOTUS, while suggesting that Fifield’s background in Republican politics gave her account a partisan taint.
Other loyal Platner supporters, including Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., argued that voters should focus on policy issues rather than personal scandal, while appearing to dismiss alleged misconduct.
«I think it’s important for us to focus on the issues facing working families a little bit more than Graham Platner’s marriage,» Sanders told reporters in June in remarks obtained by NBC.
Asked whether she thought Democrats waited too long to denounce Platner, Dean largely declined to weigh in.
«I don’t have a judgment on that,» she told Fox News Digital. «They had to do it in their own way. I did it in my way.»
«Simply…because I was asked,» the Pennsylvania Democrat continued. «I just called it as I saw it. It was not a tough call. The timeline for anybody else, I have no judgment.»
Collins, who is seeking a sixth Senate term, is widely viewed as the GOP’s most vulnerable incumbent, making Maine one of Democrats’ best pickup opportunities — a political calculus Dean said did not justify backing Platner.
«I didn’t want to fall into the trap of contorting myself in order to support a candidate who had succeeded in a primary,» Dean told Fox News Digital. «Democrats are better than that. We have values that we live by.»
«When we get it wrong, we need to simply say that,» she continued.
Some Democrats have admitted fault in the days after the Platner campaign’s implosion.
«I got the Platner call wrong, obviously,» Khanna, one of Platner’s top allies, told Politico’s Playbook, adding the candidate’s unraveling «doesn’t negate the progressive movement.»

Platner is expected to officially file paperwork withdrawing from the race on Monday — the last day he can do so to allow Democrats to replace him on the ballot. Now, Democrats are working furiously to create a selection process to choose Platner’s replacement.
Whoever Democrats nominate will face an immediate barrage of GOP spending. Collins’ allies have already pledged $8 million in negative advertising against the new nominee.

El régimen de Irán advirtió que no se considerará obligado a cumplir el acuerdo de paz con EEUU si continúan las hostilidades
El régimen de Irán advirtió este sábado que dejaría de estar obligado por el acuerdo con Estados Unidos para poner fin a la guerra en Medio Oriente si Washington “continuaba violando el acuerdo”, según informó la televisión estatal.
En referencia al acuerdo alcanzado con la mediación de Pakistán, el embajador de Irán ante la ONU declaró que “si Estados Unidos continúa violando sus obligaciones en virtud del Entendimiento de Islamabad, Irán dejará de considerarse obligado por sus compromisos en virtud de dicho entendimiento”, según un comunicado difundido por la emisora estatal IRIB.
Se trata de una nueva advertencia luego de que el líder supremo iraní, Mojtaba Khamenei, lanzara una contundente amenaza a los responsables de la muerte de su padre y predecesor, Ali Khamenei, quien fue abatido el pasado 28 de febrero en un ataque conjunto entre Estados Unidos e Israel en Teherán.
“Esta venganza es la voluntad de nuestra nación y debe inevitablemente llevarse a cabo”, señaló en una carta firmada, que fue publicada este sábado por la televisión estatal persa. Y agregó: “Este asunto no depende ni de mi existencia personal ni de la de otros funcionarios. Estemos presentes o no, ocurrirá”.
El líder supremo iraní dijo en su mensaje a la nación que la muerte de su padre tendrá represalia y responsabilizó a los “asesinos criminales sin honor” de Ali Khamenei y de “todos los mártires de estas dos guerras”. También afirmó que los culpables “están en la lista” y que esa respuesta se cumplirá “estemos ahí o no”.
Los responsables de la muerte de Ali Khamenei “se llevarán a la tumba su sueño de una muerte pacífica en la cama”, concluyó.
Ali Khamenei murió el 28 de febrero en el primer día de la última campaña de bombardeos de Israel y Estados Unidos contra el régimen de Irán. Su entierro se celebró el viernes. En el mismo mensaje, Mojtaba agradeció la asistencia a los actos de duelo en Irán e Irak: mencionó “decenas de millones” de fieles chiíes en ciudades como Teherán, Qom, Nayaf, Kerbala y Mashhad.
Según su valoración, esa asistencia tuvo un carácter “histórico”. Añadió que esa cifra de participantes en recuerdo del ex líder supremo iraní “rompe a los enemigos”.
La amenaza de la República Islámica se da horas después de reportes sobre un presunto plan de Irán para asesinar a Trump. La información señalaba que Israel compartió con Estados Unidos datos de inteligencia sobre una trama en desarrollo.
Dos funcionarios estadounidenses dijeron a Channel 12 que no se trataba de un complot concreto. Según esa versión, eran conversaciones generales entre dirigentes iraníes sobre la posibilidad de matar al presidente.
Uno de esos funcionarios sostuvo que Israel ya había entregado material similar en el último año sobre planes de Irán y de grupos armados aliados. La diferencia entre ambas versiones dejó abierta la duda sobre si existía una amenaza operativa específica o una alerta más amplia.
Trump aludió esta semana a esos riesgos con una frase directa: “Estoy en todas las listas. Vi esta mañana que estoy en cada una de sus listas. Y hasta ahora, supongo, he tenido un poco de suerte, pero quizá eso no dure mucho”.
El viernes por la noche, Trump endureció el tono y amenazó con una respuesta militar contra Irán si se producía un atentado en su contra. “Mil misiles están listos para ser cargados y apuntando a la República Islámica de Irán”, escribió en Truth Social.
La tensión se amplió con el memorando de entendimiento firmado entre Washington y Teherán el 17 de junio. La Casa Blanca afirmó el jueves que seguía comprometida con ese marco y que las conversaciones técnicas continuaban.
A la vez, el ministro de Exteriores iraní, Abbas Araghchi, acusó al secretario del Tesoro de Estados Unidos, Scott Bessent, de incumplir ese pacto. “Irán hasta ahora ha cumplido con su palabra”, sostuvo.
Araghchi vinculó esa crítica a nuevas sanciones de Washington contra Ali Ansari, a quien Estados Unidos considera un patrocinador clave del nuevo líder supremo iraní. El párrafo nueve del preacuerdo establece que, mientras no haya un acuerdo definitivo, ambas partes deben mantener el statu quo y que la Casa Blanca no impondrá nuevas sanciones ni desplegará fuerzas adicionales en la región.
El nuevo líder iraní dejó planteado que la respuesta por la muerte de su padre va más allá del duelo. Su mensaje apuntó a un castigo que, según dijo, alcanzará a los responsables antes de una muerte tranquila.

El Ejército de Ucrania ha anunciado ataques en las últimas horas contra 21 buques cisterna rusos en el mar de Azov, todos ellos según el Estado Mayor ucraniano parte de la llamada flota fantasma que emplea Rusia para evadir las sanciones comerciales internacionales.
En un comunicado, el Estado Mayor ucraniano también ha confirmado ataques contra cuatro remolcadores, dos buques de carga en seco y una draga, todos ellos empleados para “apoyo logístico militar, transportar carga y respaldar el funcionamiento de la infraestructura portuaria”.
El Estado Mayor ucraniano está ahora mismo “determinando el alcance de los daños”.
Las autoridades rusas se han limitado a confirmar por el momento la muerte de al menos una persona y varios heridos tras un ataque ucraniano con drones contra cuatro embarcaciones rusas en la bahía de Taganrog, en el sur del país y cerca de la frontera común.
Según ha asegurado el gobernador de la región de Rostov, Yuri Sliusar, “un marinero de uno de los buques ha fallecido sin que haya habido ninguna otra víctima mortal”.
“En total, cuatro embarcaciones de distintos tipos fueron atacadas en la bahía de Taganrog, una de ellas un buque cisterna que transportaba metanol. Como consecuencia del ataque, un marinero del buque técnico falleció, pero no hubo otras víctimas”, ha informado el gobernador.
Según Sliusar, los buques han sufrido diversos daños, pero “no existe amenaza de derrame o fuga de metanol” tras el ataque perpetrado por las fuerzas ucranianas, que habrían utilizado “15 drones” en total.
“Más de 15 drones fueron destruidos durante el ataque aéreo. La ciudad de Taganrog, así como los distritos de Azov y Neklinovski, fueron el objetivo”, ha concluido Sliusar.
El presidente de Ucrania, Volodimir Zelensky, ha ordenado a sus Fuerzas Armadas centrar los próximos ataques sobre refinerías de Rusia ante la escasez de combustible en el país, lo cual ha creado un malestar social entre la población, donde se han podido apreciar imágenes de largas filas de vehículos en las gasolineras, con enfrentamientos entre los ciudadanos incluidos en los últimos días.
Zelensky ha asegurado que la crisis de combustible en Rusia “se agudiza” por la negativa del presidente Vladimir Putin a poner fin a la guerra y ha advertido de que los ataques de largo alcance que han venido lanzando en las últimas semanas continuarán y para ello ha anunciado la creación de un “comando especial”.
Zelenksy urgió este sábado a avanzar en los acuerdos de licencia para los misiles Patriot y en el proyecto europeo conjunto de defensa antibalística tras el nuevo ataque nocturno de Rusia, que lanzó 121 drones y doce misiles, seis de ellos balísticos que Ucrania no pudo derribar.
“Esperamos que nuestros socios cumplan sus promesas en relación con los paquetes de ayuda acordados en la cumbre de la OTAN para ayudar a proteger a nuestra población. Debemos avanzar lo más rápidamente posible en los acuerdos de licencia para los Patriot y en el proyecto europeo conjunto de defensa antibalística. En estos momentos, la máxima prioridad para todas nuestras instituciones es hacer que esto sea una realidad”, escribió el presidente ucraniano en X.
Según la Fuerza Aérea ucraniana, Rusia lanzó desde las 18:00 horas del viernes seis misiles balísticos Iskander-M/S-400 desde la región rusa de Briansk, cuatro misiles aéreos guiados Kh-59/69 desde el espacio aéreo de la península ucraniana de Crimea, anexionada por Moscú en 2014, y dos misiles antirradar Kh-31 desde aguas del mar Negro.
Además, en su ataque nocturno, Rusia usó contra Ucrania 121 drones de ataque Shaehd, Gerbera e Italmas y drones réplica Parodia, lanzados desde las regiones rusas de Kursk, Mílerovo, Oriol y Primorsko-Ajtarsk, desde la zona ocupada en la región ucraniana de Donetsk, y desde Chauda y Gvardíiske, en Crimea, agrega el comunicado en Telegram.
“Nuestros defensores lograron derribar la mayoría de los objetivos, pero no los balísticos”, señaló Zelensky.
Así, según el parte de la Fuerza Aérea, hasta las 08:30 horas del sábado, la defensa antiaérea logro derribar o neutralizar dos misiles aéreos guiados Kh-59/69 y 111 drones enemigos en el norte, sur y este del país.
Se registraron impactos de misiles balísticos, de dos misiles aéreos guiados y de siete drones de ataque en once localizaciones, así como la caída de fragmentos de aparatos derribados en tres.
Se está verificando la información sobre los dos misiles antirradar, agrega la Fuerza Aérea, que advertía a la hora de la publicación del parte que el ataque continuaba con la presencia de varios drones enemigos en el espacio aéreo.
Zelensky denunció que once personas, entre ellas un niño, resultaron heridas en Kiev durante el ataque nocturno y agregó que incluso antes de que se emitiera la alerta aérea ya se registraron impactos contra infraestructuras civiles.
En la capital ucraniana resultaron dañados edificios de viviendas, oficinas y un seminario teológico.
También continúan las labores de desescombro en las regiones de Odesa, Sumi, Járkov y Cherníguiv, agregó el presidente.
