WATCH: Republicans shrug off fears that Trump targeting GOP incumbents could backfire on agenda

GOP lawmakers brushed aside concerns over President Donald Trump targeting GOP incumbents after Rep. Thomas Massie’s, R-Ky., loss, as several Republicans stressed the need for unity to advance the Republican agenda.
Massie lost to congressional candidate Ed Gallrein in Kentucky’s Republican primary last week after months of escalating attacks from Trump, who publicly criticized the Kentucky Republican over repeated breaks with the president and opposition to parts of the GOP agenda.
«Primaries happen,» Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., told Fox News Digital. «We move through that, but it’s back to the business of the American people, so you know, my hope is that everybody just gets focused on that.»

Massie had long been one of the most outspoken Republican critics of parts of Trump’s agenda in Congress, drawing repeated attacks from the president over spending fights and other legislative disputes. Trump intensified his criticism of Massie in the months leading up to the primary, backing efforts to oust him from Congress.
The stakes are particularly high for Republicans as the party works to maintain its slim House majority over Democrats while navigating internal divisions over Trump’s agenda and political influence.
Despite speculation that Trump’s strategy of targeting GOP incumbents could be harmful to the party, many lawmakers stood by Trump’s decision to make his personal endorsements as he sees fit.
«I think Trump is going to be Trump, and not everybody’s going to agree with what he does,» Rep. Beth Van Duyne, R-Texas, said. «The fact is that he’s been incredibly effective.»
«He gets to endorse who he wants to endorse,» Sen. John Hoeven, R-N.D., said.

Still, some Republicans acknowledged Trump’s aggressive involvement in primaries could create complications inside the conference, particularly for members no longer worried about reelection.
«It’s not lost on a lot of people, I think, that the reason that the president doesn’t like those members could be… they can get the last laugh if you will as they are untethered now to reelection.»
Others emphasized that with Republicans operating under narrow margins in the House, lawmakers have little room for prolonged battles within the party as leadership works to move Trump-backed legislation through Congress.
«We have a tight bracket that we have to, every week, fulfill,» Rep. Pete Sessions, R-Texas, said. «And as we move through primaries, as we move towards the election, we need the team. We need members to show up.»

Republicans also stressed the importance of gearing up both voters and members of Congress to be aligned ahead of the midterms as the party works to defend its narrow House majority in November.

«Ultimately, that’s up to the voters in those states and districts as to who wins these primaries and it’s up every member to make sure they win,» Rep. Mike Lawler, R-N.Y., said.
«As far as the rest of the Congress, look, we have a lot of work to do on behalf of the American people. And unless you suddenly change your view on these issues, one would think you would still represent your district and state appropriately.»

President Donald Trump announced Sunday that the United States and Iran have officially reached a peace agreement, marking a major diplomatic breakthrough that would reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports.
«The Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete,» Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.
«Congratulations to all! I hereby fully authorize the toll free opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and, simultaneously herewith, authorize the immediate removal of the United States Naval blockade. Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow!»
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, whose country has served as a mediator, was the first to announce the peace deal, saying a signing ceremony is scheduled to take place Friday in Switzerland.

Trump added that the Strait of Hormuz will reopen once the parties formally sign the agreement.
«With the opening of the Strait upon the signing of the Deal on Friday, for purposes of mine removal, oil will flow on both ends again for the Region, and the World!» he said.

According to Sharif, the deal includes the termination of military operations across the region, including in Lebanon, where Iran-backed terrorist proxy Hezbollah has been engaged in conflict with Israel.
«Both sides have declared the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon,» he said.
Additional details of the agreement, including any provisions related to Iran’s nuclear program, were not immediately released.
Iran’s deputy foreign minister said talks with the United States on a final and more comprehensive agreement will take place during a 60-day ceasefire period, according to Reuters.
The outlet reported that the future of Iran’s nuclear program will be addressed in upcoming negotiations. Trump has long maintained that Iran cannot be in possession of a nuclear weapon and has repeatedly vowed to prevent Tehran from developing, acquiring or obtaining one.
Trump further praised his administration for securing the agreement.
«This Great Deal will bring Peace and Security to the whole Region,» he said. «Many presidents have tried to make Peace with Iran, and all have failed before me. The Leaders of the Region have, for the first time, found a President who can help them achieve real Peace.»
Sharif also thanked the United States and Iran for their «commitment to finding a diplomatic solution to the conflict,» as well as Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey for their contributions to the mediation effort.
With the agreement now in place, mediators are expected to facilitate a series of meetings this week that could lay the groundwork for technical negotiations and the official signing ceremony, Sharif said.

The peace deal would formally end the high-stakes conflict that began on Feb. 28, which disrupted roughly 20% of global oil shipments that pass through the Strait of Hormuz and contributed to higher energy prices worldwide.
It comes roughly one year after Israel initiated massive strikes on Iran during Operation Rising Lion. The strikes sparked a 12-day conflict between the nations before Trump ordered strikes on a trio of nuclear facilities later that same month.

A gracious Ukrainian President Volodmyr Zelenskyy spoke with President Donald Trump on the eve of the G7 Summit, he announced Sunday on X, congratulating Trump on turning 80 and vowing further peace talks in the coming days.
«I have just had a great conversation with @POTUS,» Zelenskyy wrote Sunday on X. «I congratulated President Trump on his birthday, and we have had quite a detailed discussion about many key things – peace, surely, was among them. «I wished President Trump every success, above all in his work to end Russia’s war against Ukraine.»
«I also thanked him for all the support America has been providing to Ukraine, and it does matter that we remember with gratitude every step of that support – from Javelins to Patriots,» Zelenskyy continued. «We discussed things that could help bring about peace now, and I informed the President about the latest developments on the battlefield and how our position has strengthened.»

Notably, the G7 Summit will bring direct talks between the leaders of seven major industrialized economies, including Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The call came as Trump turned 80 and prepared to travel early Monday moring to France for the G7, where Ukraine and Russia’s war is expected to be s major topic. Trump will participate in a working session Tuesday morning with Zelenskyy at the summit, though not necessarily a formal bilateral meeting, according to a senior administration official.
The outreach also comes as European leaders seek to keep Trump engaged on Ukraine policy and push for renewed diplomatic efforts involving Kyiv, Moscow and Europe. European officials are expected to use the G7 gathering to press Trump on a plan to restart negotiations with Russia while also preparing additional pressure on Moscow.

Trump has hoped to have secured an Iranian peace treaty before the G7 and has long hoped his global peacemaking efforts would ultimately «end the death» in southern and eastern Ukraine, where Russia’s Vladimir Putin has sought to stake claim to large swaths of land during the ongoing war.

Estados Unidos e Irán firmaron el acuerdo que pone fin a la guerra en Medio Oriente, iniciada el 28 de febrero por el país norteamericano e Israel, uno de los conflictos más tensos de los últimos años en la región. Así lo anunció el primer ministro de Pakistán con un posteo en X.
“Tras intensas conversaciones, nos complace anunciar que el Acuerdo de Paz entre los Estados Unidos de América y la República Islámica de Irán ha sido ALCANZADO. Ambas partes han declarado la terminación inmediata y permanente de las operaciones militares en todos los frentes, incluido Líbano”, escribió el mandatario Shehbaz Sharif.
Después del anuncio, el precio del petróleo abrió con una caída del 5% en Estados Unidos.
En tanto, el presidente de Estados Unidos, Donald Trump, anunció que alcanzó un acuerdo con Irán para reabrir el estrecho de Ormuz tras más de tres meses de conflicto. Según afirmó, el paso marítimo se reabrirá tras la firma del acuerdo con Irán el viernes.
Desde Teherán, el viceministro de asuntos exteriores de Irán, Kazem Gharibabadi, declaró en la noche del domingo que al acuerdo con Estados Unidos pone “fin inmediatamente a la guerra”.
“En primer lugar, el fin inmediato y definitivo de la guerra y de las operaciones militares en los diferentes frentes, incluido el Líbano”, enumeró el diplomático, especialista en cuestiones jurídicas, en la televisión estatal.
El canciller iraní dijo que “el enemigo, que atacó para llevar a cabo sus designios malintencionados, ha visto todos sus objetivos reducidos a la nada, y la República Islámica de Irán ha logrado grandes victorias en esta guerra”, declaró a la televisión estatal iraní.
Irán dijo además que en un plazo de 60 días se iniciarán conversaciones para un “acuerdo final”.
Además, la agencia de noticias iraní Mers dijo que el memorando de entendimiento contempla el desembolso inmediato de 12.000 millones de dólares en activos congelados.
El documento prevé “el desbloqueo de 24.000 millones de dólares de activos iraníes congelados durante el período de negociación de 60 días” que se abre tras la conclusión del memorando de entendimiento, según Mehr. “La mitad de esta suma debe ponerse a disposición de Irán antes del inicio de las negociaciones”, precisó.

En una publicación en su red social Truth Social, Trump explicó que, a cambio de la reapertura del estrecho, Estados Unidos levantará el bloqueo marítimo impuesto a la entrada y salida de buques en puertos iraníes.

Por la presente, autorizo plenamente la apertura sin peaje del estrecho de Ormuz y, simultáneamente, autorizo el levantamiento inmediato del bloqueo naval de Estados Unidos. ¡Buques del mundo, arranquen sus motores! ¡Que fluya el petróleo!“, escribió Trump, sin ofrecer más detalles del acuerdo. Poco antes, en un mensaje en su red Truth Social, dijo que la relación con Teherán es “muy diferente y mejor que la que tuvieron las administraciones anteriores”, con duras críticas a uno de sus antecesores, el demócrata, Barack Obama: “A diferencia de los cientos de miles de millones de dólares que Obama les pagó, incluyendo 1700 millones de dólares en efectivo, aquí no habrá intercambio de dinero».
El presidente de Estados Unidos dijo además que intervendrán sobre las reservas de uranio enriquecido iraníes: “En el momento oportuno, cuando todo esté en calma, entraremos y recuperaremos el polvo nuclear, enterrado en las profundidades de las imponentes montañas de granito sumergidas, gracias a nuestros magníficos bombarderos B-2 y sus brillantes pilotos, y lo desintegraremos y destruiremos, ya sea en Irán o en Estados Unidos».
Trump planteó: “Esperamos colaborar con Irán y con todo Oriente Medio durante muchos años. Ojalá este proceso se desarrolle de forma rápida, sencilla y sin contratiempos. Si no es así, tenemos la alternativa definitiva, ¡que esperamos no tener que volver a usar jamás!“.
