¿La Mona Lisa es una madre que Da Vinci pintó con la suya como modelo?: el ensayo con que Alicia Dujovne Ortiz se despide de la literatura
Toda historia tiene su contrahistoria. Sobre todo, en la cultura popular. ¿Acaso La Mona Lisa de Leonardo da Vinci no es, además de una obra del refinado Renacimiento italiano y un documento invaluable de la historia del arte, un producto masivo? La historia oficial dice que la mujer retratada en el lienzo que cuelga del Museo del Louvre se llamaba Lisa Gherardini, esposa del comerciante Francesco del Giocondo. Pero hay una contrahistoria: La Gioconda es, en realidad, Pacífica Brandani, una “madre muerta”.
Así empieza el nuevo libro de Alicia Dujovne Ortiz, un “ensayito personal” que acaba de editar el sello Primavera Revólver. “Número treinta y uno de la lista de sus predecesores, y escrito rozando mis ochenta y siete años, Los nombres de mi madre es mi último libro”, escribe en el prólogo. El libro aborda la pintura más famosa del mundo preguntándose cómo opera lo maternal en esta obra y en las biografías que la bordean. Y al ser un “último libro”, tiene la pátina agridulce de las despedidas.
Cuando observamos La Mona Lisa, ¿qué nos devuelve esa imagen? Dujovne Ortiz escribe: “La miré, me devolvió la mirada como acostumbraba hacerlo. Sí, una madre. Ese rostro lleno, con el óvalo ligeramente deformado, y esas manos puestas sobre el vientre con infinito esmero, protegiendo en las sombras a alguien que ya casi se ve”. De pronto estamos en los albores del siglo XVI y Leonardo da Vinci le confiesa al clérigo Antonio De Beatis que ese cuadro lo pintó “a instancias de Giuliano de’ Medici”.
Ahí se abre la historia. Giuliano de’ Medici, “descendiente de una familia de mercaderes sin una gota de sangre azul”, mecenas y amigo de Leonardo, pero también un “libertino” y cortesano del ducado de Urbino, tuvo un hijo que no aceptó. La madre era Pacífica Brandani, habitué del palacio, que, sola, decidió dejar al bebé “sobre las frías losas de Santa Chiara”. Ella murió por complicaciones del parto, a pocos días de dar a luz. Giuliano volvió a Urbino. Era tarde: Pacífica había muerto. El niño lo estaba esperando.
Alicia Dujovne Ortiz, siguiendo una investigación del historiador del arte Roberto Zapperi, profundiza en la historia de Pacífica y en un pedido triste, aunque valioso, el de Giuliano a Leonardo: un retrato. Pero, se pregunta en el libro, “¿de quién era el retrato imaginativo, vale decir, sin modelo a la vista, que le estaba solicitando y, sobre todo, para qué se lo pedía, y para quién?” “Para el pequeño Ippolito. Para ese chico de cuatro años que acaba de conocer a Filiberta de Savoya, la esposa de su padre”.
La historia oficial de Da Vinci, narrada por Giorgio Vasari en su libro de 1550, Las vidas de los más excelentes arquitectos, pintores y escultores italianos, parece perder “en parte” su verosimilitud: “Digo bien en parte, como si en relación con esta, y quién sabe si no con la mayoría de las historias, las cosas sucediesen por mitades, tercios, cuartos, octavos, de modo que creemos observarlas en con catalejo y en realidad el ojo lo hemos puesto en un caleidoscopio”. No importa: “La verdad entera no es de este mundo”.
¿Y a quién pinta si Pacífica ya estaba “muerta dos veces: una de parto y otra de olvido”? La técnica, la sfumatura, y los colores, bien oscuros, responden a lo mismo: está lejos, está muerta. “Dos veces muerta”, subraya Dujovne Ortiz, pero “no solo por el parto y el olvido, sino porque fue dos”: no solo fue Pacífica, también fue Caterina, la madre del propio Da Vinci. Y con esa hipótesis en la mano, la autora tira del hilo para profundizar en esta trama donde una “divinidad burlona se divierte a costa de nuestro error”.
No lo saben. No tienen por qué saberlo. Las nueve millones de personas que visitan el Museo del Louvre cada año —el 80% va solo por La Mona Lisa— ni se imaginan que están cayendo en una trampa doble. Por un lado: marketing cultural. Que el cuadro de Da Vinci sea el más famoso de toda la historia del arte se debe fundamentalmente a la cobertura mediática que recibió tras el robo de 1911. La fiebre fue tan grande que, hasta que fue recuperado en 1913, la gente hacía filas para ver el hueco en la pared.
Por otro lado, el placer del arte requiere competencias, saberes, contexto. Sin embargo, muchas veces, si hay predisposición, aparece eso que Hubert Damisch llama efecto de captura: la capacidad que tiene la propia obra —para Damisch, un cuadro es un “aparato óptico activo”— de abandonar su pasividad decorativa y “asaltar” al espectador para que pase de ser un sujeto observante a un objeto observado. El viejo aforismo nietzscheano: “Cuando mirás largo tiempo a un abismo, el abismo también mira dentro tuyo”.
Para ingresar en aquel Renacimiento, Dujovne Ortiz no solo se pone las prendas de una narradora y las de “apenas” una periodista, también las de la artista. Pintaba en su juventud y, seis décadas después, volvió “con el ardor de siempre”. El lunes pasado se inauguró una muestra suya en París junto a la artista argentina Ruth Arbiser que se puede visitar hasta el 27 de septiembre en S, une Galerie, que está dentro del café Le Sélect. La exposición se titula Intérieur Brut (en español: Producto Bruto Interno).
Alicia Dujovne Ortiz nació en Buenos Aires en enero de 1939, hija de dos militantes: la escritora feminista Alicia Ortiz y el editor comunista Carlos Dujovne. Se exilió en Francia en 1978 y desde entonces allá vive. Su obra incluye poesía, novela y las biografías de personajes como Eva Perón, María Elena Walsh y Diego Maradona. Su libro anterior, titulado Andanzas, de 2023, es una trilogía autobiográfica. Con Los nombres de mi madre, dice, cierra su producción literaria: se retira de las letras.
“Pero vayamos al Leonardo que en 1513 está en Roma pintando a la madre solicitada por su mecenas”, retoma sobre el final del libro. Es una madre que “va a existir para que un niño la mire”, por eso el enigma de sus ojos: “Imposible hacerla dirigir su mirada hacia ninguna otra dirección. La posición que ha tomado su cabeza requiere que la fije en un punto situado frente a ella. Un punto donde está el hijo”. Pero hay otra hipótesis, dice Dujovne Ortiz: Leonardo pintó a Caterina, “no para ningún niño sino para sí mismo”.
Caterina es el otro gran personaje del libro. Campesina local para algunos, esclava extranjera para otros, tuvo que abandonarlo cuando tenía apenas unos meses de vida. Hubo un reencuentro, cuatro décadas después: vivieron juntos un año entero en la corte de Milán hasta que enfermó y murió. La Mona Lisa, aquel retrato de una “madre dos veces muerta”, que es Pacífica, que es Caterina, pero también algo más, escribe Dujovne Ortiz: la madre de “cualquier ser humano capaz de reconocerse en sus ojos”.

Estados Unidos pidió confiscar USD 61 millones en criptomonedas obtenidas por operadores chinos por la venta de crudo iraní
La Fiscalía del Distrito Sur de Nueva York y la Oficina Federal de Investigación de Estados Unidos (FBI) iniciaron acciones judiciales para confiscar 61 millones de dólares en criptomonedas que, según la acusación, provienen de operaciones de venta de petróleo iraní y tenían como destino el financiamiento del régimen de Irán.
El fiscal adjunto del distrito, Sean Buckley, afirmó que los activos incautados podían financiar operaciones militares y ataques contra intereses estadounidenses y sus aliados. “Hoy incautamos y solicitamos la confiscación de más de 61 millones de dólares del Gobierno de Irán, que de otro modo habrían financiado acciones militares hostiles y ataques terroristas contra Estados Unidos y nuestros aliados”, declaró.
La demanda señala a las firmas chinas Blessed Trust y Hexa Whale. De acuerdo con las autoridades, ambas usaron cuentas de negociación de Binance, plataforma con sede en Emiratos Árabes Unidos, para blanquear ganancias procedentes de la comercialización “ilegal” de petróleo iraní.
Estados Unidos sostiene que los fondos beneficiaban actividades que atribuye a la República Islámica y a la Guardia Revolucionaria de Irán. La investigación calcula que la red de operadores de criptomonedas en China y otros países pudo blanquear hasta USD 1.500 millones vinculados a exportaciones de crudo iraní.
“Como se alega en la denuncia presentada hoy, el Gobierno de Irán utilizó una red de operadores de criptomonedas en China y otros países para blanquear más de 1.500 millones de dólares procedentes del petróleo ilícito, destinados a beneficiar al ejército iraní y a la Guardia Revolucionaria Islámica, designada como organización terrorista”, sostuvo Buckley.
El subdirector a cargo del FBI, James Barnacle, señaló que la investigación muestra la capacidad de la agencia para identificar circuitos financieros y bloquear activos vinculados a Gobiernos que buscan eludir sanciones. “El FBI no cejará en su empeño de confiscar los fondos de actores extranjeros peligrosos”, afirmó.
Fuentes del régimen iraní indicaron al Financial Times que el banco central del país promovió la repatriación de fondos de inversores y empresas para sostener la economía. Entre las alternativas figuraría el empleo de criptomonedas para liquidar operaciones transfronterizas a través de plataformas de intercambio iraníes. Las autoridades iraníes también flexibilizaron normas cambiarias, según esas fuentes. Las medidas permiten a los operadores acceder al mercado de divisas fuera de los tipos oficiales y utilizar ingresos por exportaciones para importar bienes de forma directa, sin canalizarlos por el sistema estatal.
El presidente de Irán, Masoud Pezeshkian, pidió además en la cumbre del bloque BRICS un mayor uso de las monedas nacionales en el comercio entre los miembros del bloque y alertó sobre posibles “shocks” políticos en otras divisas, en alusión al sistema dominado por el dólar.
Estas gestiones coinciden con una ofensiva financiera de Estados Unidos contra Irán. Varios bancos internacionales recibieron sanciones por sus presuntos vínculos con la República Islámica.
El lunes pasado, el Departamento del Tesoro de Estados Unidos sancionó al banco ruso VTB, la segunda entidad financiera de Rusia por volumen de activos, al acusarlo de facilitar operaciones que permitieron a Irán eludir las restricciones económicas estadounidenses y mover miles de millones de dólares ligados a Teherán.
La Oficina de Control de Activos Extranjeros (OFAC) incluyó a VTB Bank Public Joint Stock Company en su lista de Nacionales Especialmente Designados y Personas Bloqueadas. La decisión congela los activos de la entidad bajo jurisdicción estadounidense y prohíbe a ciudadanos y compañías de Estados Unidos realizar operaciones con el banco sin una licencia específica.
La medida se tomó bajo la Orden Ejecutiva 13902, que habilita sanciones contra actores relacionados con los sectores financiero y petrolero de Irán. El Tesoro no anunció licencias generales ni plazos de desinversión para operaciones ya en curso.
Según el comunicado oficial, VTB estableció vínculos de corresponsalía bancaria con instituciones financieras iraníes previamente sancionadas, abrió oficinas en Irán y creó un mecanismo de liquidación en riales iraníes y rublos rusos. Ese sistema habría permitido el movimiento de fondos vinculados al régimen iraní entre ambos países, de acuerdo con Washington.
La designación forma parte de la Operation Economic Outcast, que el secretario del Tesoro, Scott Bessent, presentó el 24 de agosto. La administración de Donald Trump describió esa estrategia como un “Día D económico” contra el Gobierno iraní.

‘Still waiting on the DOGE check’: Battleground state voters cast doubt on Trump’s new $5K promise
Voters squeezed by rising costs are skeptical of President Donald Trump’s proposed $5,000 dividend — with at least one resident pointing to a previous DOGE dividend proposal that never materialized.
«I feel like that’s a pitch to get more votes,» Yolanda Lewis told Digital. «I’m still waiting on the DOGE check that he promised that we never received, so until he gives us a definite date saying when we’re gonna get that and receive it, then I’ll take that into consideration.»
Trump suggested in February 2025 that a portion of savings generated by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) could be returned to taxpayers, while Elon Musk entertained a proposal that envisioned payments of as much as $5,000. Trump later backed the idea of returning 20% of DOGE savings to Americans. DOGE reported $110.3 billion in savings from contracts, grants and leases, though a Government Accountability Office review later found that some of its estimates were inaccurate or lacked sufficient supporting evidence.
Now, with affordability a top-of-mind issue for voters across the country, Trump has unveiled a new «Trump dividend» plan at the Midterm GOP Convention last Wednesday that would give $5,000 to American adults if Republicans maintain control of Congress.
Several Detroit voters, interviewed by Digital at the Detroit Health Department’s annual Block Party on Sept. 12, rejected the proposal, with some calling it a «bribe» and others questioning whether the money would ever be paid out.

«I think it’s kind of irresponsible because what is the long-term impact of this money?» Jahdante Smith, the Green Party candidate for the state House of Representatives 9th district, told Digital.
Smith, who supports Medicare for All, pointed to the nation’s roughly $40 trillion debt in questioning how the proposal would be funded.
«So where does that money come from? Where do you divert those funds from? Also, I think that it is sort of a bribe,» Smith said.
Michigan, which Trump won by 1.4% in 2024, has become a key battleground in the fight for Senate control as Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Saye and Republican Mike Rogers are both vying for Michigan’s open Senate seat.
El-Sayed called Trump’s $5,000 proposal «unserious» during a rally in Lansing, Michigan.
«Funny thing about it is like there’s no world in which you can pay for it,» El-Sayed said. «So how about you actually do some governing and like solve the Social Security problem. How about we guarantee people health care so they don’t have to pay so much for that.»
Rogers’ campaign did not directly comment on the former congressman’s stance on Trump’s $5,000 dividend plan. Instead, it pointed to El-Sayed’s support for implementing a progressive tax plan.
«You know what’s not serious? Challenging Mike to a 1:1 football scrimmage, taking money from Designated Terrorist Organizations and advocating to raise taxes for Michiganders while they’re already paying for Democrats’ mismanagement,» said Alyssa Brouillet, communications director for the Rogers campaign. «Funny enough, those are things Abdul does.»
Prices are an acute concern in Detroit, where roughly a third of residents live below the federal poverty line. The city’s median household income is below $40,000, according to U.S. census data.
«Well, as a city Detroit retiree, affordability is very important, and I think the prices since Trump’s been back in office have gone up on everything, especially gas, diesel, you know, affordabilities went out the window,» William Davis told Digital.
The current cost of gas in Detroit is $4.11 per gallon. Before the Iran war, gas prices hovered between $2.81 and $2.92 per gallon in January.

Martesha Adams, a young mother and nurse living in Detroit, told Digital at the Detroit Health Department Block Party that she also viewed the $5,000 proposal as an attempt to win over struggling Americans.
«The whole time I feel that he’s been in the office, it’s been a kind of game,» Adams said. «America has been laughed at from everywhere. And the $5K for bribery, that’s nothing. So I hope that people do not go for that bribe, and they really look into the politics.»
For Shelby Campbell, a 2023 graduate of Wayne State University, affordability has already forced significant changes. She said she sold her car because she could no longer afford Michigan’s no-fault auto insurance and has struggled to find an affordable rental in Detroit.
Campbell called Trump’s $5,000 proposal «disgusting.»
«He shouldn’t be able to offer people money if we have one party in office,» Campbell said. «It’s supposed to be about everybody and what we all want and need, so it’s just bribery in my opinion.»
Campbell, who said she plans to vote for El-Sayed in the general election, argued that money already plays too large a role in politics.
«I think he’s genuinely a good guy, and he wants to get money out of politics, and I am all for that,» Campbell said. «We seriously need that because big corporations buy our elections just like Donald Trump is trying to do.»
Other Detroit residents echoed Lewis’ skepticism about whether Trump would actually deliver the proposed payments.

Trump also proposed a separate $2,000 dividend last year funded by tariff revenue, though those payments never materialized.
«I don’t think it’s realistic to think he’s going to do that,» Davis said of Trump’s latest proposal.
Digital reached out to the White House for comment.
House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said Sunday on «Meet the Press» that the $5,000 payments would require congressional approval, while pledging to work toward Trump’s proposal.
«I never go out and give big commitments on the front end because I’ve got to work through it, and that’s what we do every single day,» Johnson said.
While Trump’s proposal has garnered mixed reactions within the Republican Party, Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, posted on X that he’d work to prepare a bill and get it passed before the election.
House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, R-Minn., rejected the idea that Trump was seeking to «bribe» voters.
«The only thing that I knew of was that he has this concept of a dividend of all Americans being able to share in the success of America,» Emmer told Politico.
«Let the policy guys draft it. Let them debate it. Let them move it through committee,» Emmer told Politico. «You get it to the whip’s office. We’ll pass it.»

Kamala Harris viciously mocked with resurfaced bumbling ‘two words’ explanation of AI after desperate call
Former Vice President and failed presidential candidate Kamala Harris is being mocked over a resurfaced clip of her «two letters» explanation of artificial intelligence after she posted a call to slow its development.
Harris, who previously served as the Biden administration’s AI czar, posted a lengthy statement on AI on Monday. In her post, Harris called for President Donald Trump to «do his job to protect America’s interests by pursuing a treaty with countries like China to stop dangerous uses of AI, limit the speed of its development, and adopt global standards for testing.»
In response, social media users recalled Harris’ attempt at explaining AI as vice president in 2023.
«I think the first part of this issue that should be articulated is AI is kind of a fancy thing,» Harris said. «First of all, it’s two letters. It means artificial intelligence, but ultimately what it is is it’s about machine learning.»

She continued, saying, «And so, the machine is taught — and part of the issue here is what information is going into the machine that will then determine — and we can predict then, if we think about what information is going in, what then will be produced in terms of decisions and opinions that may be made through that process.»
«So,» she went on even further, «to reduce it down to its most simple point, this is part of the issue that we have here is thinking about what is going into a decision, and then whether that decision is actually legitimate and reflective of the needs and the life experiences of all the people.»
After Harris’ X post on Monday, conservative influencer «Western Lensman» reposted the 2023 video of Harris, writing, «Kamala Harris on AI when it’s not a written statement crafted by a team of consultants.»
National security and global economics expert Kyle Bass reacted, «There’s not a chance in hell Kamala wrote this. Have you ever heard her say ‘frontier,’ ‘advancing,’ and ‘intelligence’ in the same sentence? Until now, her misfits had never produced anything this un-Kamala and then posted it on social media.»
Columnist S.L. Kanthan wrote, «One of the dumbest women now wants America to voluntarily slow down progress in AI.» He posted another video of Harris explaining cloud storage.
Harris said, «No longer are you necessarily keeping those private files in some file cabinet that’s locked in the basement of the house. It’s on your laptop, and it’s then, therefore, up here in this cloud, that exists above us, right?»
Author and national security expert Sarah Adams commented on Harris’ AI post, writing, «No one is looking for your thoughts on ‘intelligence.’»
Another user, influencer Andrew Aziz, and several others suggested that Harris’ post itself was AI-generated.

In her post, Harris wrote that AI is «advancing at an alarming speed,» emphasizing what she characterized as industry leaders’ call to «responsibly slow the pace of frontier AI development.»
She wrote that «a slowdown is critical in order to ensure AI serves the public interest,» saying, «Pacing AI development does not mean giving up on this technology’s potential to produce life-saving benefits in fields like medicine — some of which we are already seeing. Rather, it is about setting up sensible guardrails so that AI does not completely escape human control and endanger our safety and collective future.»
Besides action from Trump, Harris called on Congress to «work at an urgent pace» to provide AI oversight, saying, «The United States must continue to lead the world in developing AI technology even as we seek to impose common-sense safety standards.»
Harris is not the only prominent Democrat to have called for increased AI regulation recently. Former President Barack Obama urged Democrats during a private fundraiser in New York City on Thursday to place artificial intelligence near the center of their political agenda ahead of the midterms and the 2028 presidential race while warning that the technology could become dangerous without greater oversight as voters increasingly raise concerns about jobs, privacy and data centers.
«This is something that is moving very fast in private hands, and if we don’t get on top of it, I think can be dangerous,» Obama said. «If we do get on top of it, I do think it’s beneficial. I genuinely think it’s going to accelerate, for example, drug development in ways that can help us cure diseases. I do think that this can help us figure out pathways for a clean energy future.»

Meanwhile, Trump on Monday rejected growing calls for safeguards and restrictions on AI, declaring that the technology needs a «STRONG AND SMART» president rather than additional restraints.
«The only control or ‘guardrails’ that AI needs is a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT, and the U.S.A. has that, in spades!» Trump wrote on Truth Social.
He suggested that «there is a SICK conspiracy going on against AI and Data Centers, and the only one that is happy about it is China,» adding, «WHOEVER WINS AI, WINS! We are leading China, and all others, and will continue to do so.»
