A suspected terrorist attack near Paris Friday added to tensions across France as the nation prepares for more potential violence Saturday.

Seventy thousand law enforcement officers, along with helicopters, armored vehicles and water cannons, will be deployed across France as President Emmanuel Macron’s government tries to ward off another weekend of violent protests.

«The strategy adopted for the coming days is to ban protests requested by individuals or groups with no legitimate authority,» Macron said ahead of the weekend after canceling his planned trip to Nigeria and Senegal originally scheduled for next week.

«The rules are simple, and I think they’re just common sense,» Macron added. «The general recommendation is that there should be no demonstrations in the coming days.»

«Where trade unions submit requests to hold demonstrations, prefects will examine them in accordance with the law,» he added, «but alternative routes will be proposed» to protect city centers, businesses and public buildings.

Adding to security concerns, a suspected terrorist attack occurred in the city of Trappes, west of Paris. A 39-year-old man was arrested by police after one person was killed and four others, including a 12-year-old girl, were wounded in what was originally said to be a «relatively random» shooting.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez has since told local media, «The motive may be racist. The investigation is ongoing, but this is clearly a terrorist crime.»

The AFP reported the suspect appeared to fire randomly from a vehicle, and the mayor told reporters the dead victim and at least one of the wounded were «of African origin.»

Macron said «the nation is standing with» the victims of this «terrible ordeal.»

FRANCE COULD FACE EVEN WORSE DESTRUCTION WITH SECOND WEEKEND OF PLANNED RIOTS, STATE DEPT WARNS

Ahead of Saturday’s protests and after acknowledging that police had «lost control» during last weekend’s unrest, Nuñez, the interior minister, said his ministry is «ready for tomorrow. We will be extremely vigilant, extremely firm, and we will let absolutely nothing pass.»

Reuters reports that the Union Nationale des Étudiants de France, or UNEF, one of the nation’s oldest student unions, has said its planned rallies will go on as scheduled despite police rejecting their permit requests. Police have so far only approved a union demonstration in Paris, Reuters reported, while denying requests from UNEF and the «Yellow Vest» movement, an anti-establishment force that first emerged in 2018.

Macron also took aim at those he says are behind the violence, saying, «Last Saturday, we had political and seditious acts by ultra-left groups whose aim is to bring down the Republic.»

Earlier this week, Fabian Vanhemelryck, secretary general of the Alliance Police Nationale union, said political figures deserved blame because of «those who excuse the inexcusable, justify violence and prefer to overwrite police officers rather than condemn those who attack them.»

He also said the «state that abandons its police officers in the face of increasingly uninhibited violence, while demanding that they accept, remain(s) silent and continue(s) to hold the line.»

Major French institutions, like the Louvre and the Musée d’Orsay, will be closed in anticipation of Saturday’s planned protests, and 24 Metro stations across Paris will be closed. A Ligue 1 soccer match between Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique Lyonnais, scheduled for Sunday night at Parc des Princes in the capital, has also been postponed to Monday evening.

The NFL game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New Orleans Saints, scheduled for Sunday afternoon at Stade de France just north of central Paris, is still set to be played as scheduled, yet some weekend events around the game have been canceled.

The Stade de France is the same stadium that hosted an international soccer match between France and neighboring Germany during the Nov. 13, 2015 terror attacks.

Explosions were heard outside the stadium during the game that night, with then-French President François Hollande in attendance. Fans were held inside the stadium for hours while authorities dealt with the attacks unfolding around Paris that night.

Thune weighs nightmare scenario for GOP as Democrats threaten to flip House

Published

on

FREMONT, Neb. — If Democrats are able to gain control of the House of Representatives, one relationship between the top two lawmakers on both sides of Congress could define the remainder of President Donald Trump’s time in office.

If that’s the outcome on Election Night, Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., would have to work with the Democratic leader who rises in the House, and that is expected to be House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., who has led Democrats in the lower chamber since 2023.

But Thune, in an interview with Digital on the campaign trail in Nebraska, remained confident that wouldn’t be the outcome.

THUNE MAKES BOLD PREDICTION ABOUT REPUBLICANS’ SENATE CHANCES AS GOP PULLS MILLIONS FROM KEY RACES

«Well, I mean, I think obviously that’s an entirely different dynamic,» Thune said. «You’ve got a situation with divided government and that creates a different incentive structure in terms of if you want to be able to get things done, but I don’t assume for a minute that’s going to happen.»

«I still think that when push comes to shove and people look at the choices in front of them that we have a really good shot at hanging on both the House and the Senate,» he continued.

Election forecasters predict that the Senate could stay in Republican control, though seven total races are considered toss-ups by the Cook Political Report. Republicans’ chances of holding onto power in the House, however, are murkier, given that dozens of battleground seats are in play that have shifted favorably toward Democrats.

The GOP has had a grip on the lower chamber since 2022, when it flipped the House during former President Joe Biden’s presidency. But a deeply unpopular Trump, whose approval ratings have dipped to historic lows, and continued economic pressures could contribute to Democrats regaining power.

JOHNSON DOWNPLAYS GOP’S MIDTERM WOES AS DEMOCRATS EYE HOUSE TAKEOVER: ‘I AM VERY BULLISH’

Jeffries’ office did not respond to an inquiry from Digital asking whether he could work with Thune if both won their respective leadership spots.

There has been no love lost between the two men during this congressional term so far, with each sharply criticizing the other during key legislative fights.

Thune blasted Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., earlier this year as talks began to break down over funding the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The top Republican accused both of being «afraid of their shadows,» and being controlled by their left flank.

That prompted Jeffries to retort to reporters that it was Thune who was «scared of his own shadow» during the partisan standoff. During the 2025 government shutdown, Jeffries accused Thune of «trying to bluff his way into an agreement» on federal spending.

Congress is no stranger to a divided government, either. From 2023 to early 2025, Republicans controlled the House and Democrats held a razor-thin majority in the Senate.

SCHUMER WARNS OF REPUBLICAN ADVANTAGE THAT COULD CHANGE THE BATTLE FOR SENATE CONTROL

During that time, according to data collected by the Pew Research Center, the split Congress produced 106 laws. This version of Congress has so far produced 121 laws, with some major legislative action happening, like the «big, beautiful bill» and a major housing affordability package, passing between historically long government shutdowns.

Thune is laser-focused on keeping the GOP’s control of the Senate, which was under Democratic control until 2024, when Trump and Republicans clinched a trifecta in Washington, D.C.

He’s crisscrossed the country for the last several weeks of the homestretch heading into the election on Nov. 3, boosting candidates in competitive races that could determine the balance of power in the Senate.

Republican control of the upper chamber, he contended, would be vital to continuing key chunks of Trump’s agenda, including confirming his judicial and other executive branch nominations.

«So if you want to see the country succeed and move forward, we’ve got to have a majority in the U.S. Senate to work with this president,» Thune said. «Hopefully with a majority in the House as well, but I am very committed to doing whatever I can in the next couple of weeks getting around the country on behalf of our candidates to ensure that we have that majority in the Senate.»

La caída de la sociedad occidental

Published

on
