ActBlue sues Texas AG Ken Paxton, alleging political retaliation over Democrats’ fundraising

Democratic fundraising platform ActBlue is suing Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, accusing the Republican of using his office for «retaliation» to punish the group for its political work and asking a federal judge to block his investigations and litigation against the organization.
«ActBlue is trying to take me down,» Paxton, who is running for Senate in Texas, wrote on X. «I sued the fundraising platform for deceiving Americans by lying about its donation processes that allow fraudulent and foreign donations.
«I will hold those who break the law accountable.»
The ActBlue lawsuit, filed Friday in federal court in Boston, seeks to counter the case Paxton brought last month in Texas state court accusing ActBlue of misleading Congress and the public about its donation practices. ActBlue said Paxton’s actions are part of an unlawful retaliation campaign targeting the nation’s leading small-dollar Democratic fundraising platform.

«Ken Paxton has spent more than two years using the power of his office to investigate, harass, and sue ActBlue,» Lawrence Oliver, ActBlue’s chief legal officer, said in a statement.
«The timing of Paxton fighting for his political life in his run for U.S. Senate and his use of the Attorney General’s office to attack ActBlue, should not be lost on anyone. He is wasting taxpayer dollars to benefit his political ambitions.
«That is not law enforcement. It is retaliation against constitutionally protected speech and association, and it is exactly what the First Amendment forbids.»

ActBlue also argues selective prosecution, noting Paxton has never investigated WinRed — the Republican fundraising counterpart to ActBlue — alleging in the lawsuit that «Paxton has a history of targeting Democratic-aligned entities.»
«During his tenure as Texas Attorney General, Paxton has signaled an emphasis on enforcement against entities enabling voting and political speech that he perceives as aligned with the Democratic Party,» the lawsuit reads. «He has consistently sought to suppress speech with which he disagrees and hobble his political opponents by abusing the powers of his Office.»
ActBlue cited a New York Times report that Talarico «had posted strong fundraising numbers for the first quarter of 2026,» in potentially being the nexus for Paxton’s opening his investigation.

The timing of his investigation shows a political motive, ActBlue’s lawsuit argues. The group says Paxton’s investigators began conducting undercover transactions on ActBlue’s platform Feb. 18, one day after Talarico announced he had raised $2.5 million in 24 hours, including more than $2.2 million through ActBlue.
The lawsuit said Paxton filed his Texas case five days after national reporting described Talarico as a major fundraising threat who had raised more than $36 million through the platform.
The lawsuit marks an escalation in a broader Republican-backed campaign targeting ActBlue and other online fundraising platforms. President Donald Trump last year directed his Department of Justice to investigate the groups, and Paxton has pursued ActBlue through a series of inquiries dating back to December 2023.

The issue comes as the Democratic National Committee reportedly carried more than $17.5 million in debt this winter, according to the FEC.
The House Administration, Judiciary and Oversight committees have been investigating ActBlue for more than a year and issued a 2025 report titled «Fraud on ActBlue.»
«ActBlue has engaged in good faith at every turn,» the group wrote in a statement after sending a letter to the committees last week before filing the Paxton lawsuit.

«We are asking the Committees to do the same: engage with us directly before sending accusatory public correspondence, and answer unresolved questions about the relationship between their oversight work and a DOJ investigation ordered by a President who has made no secret of his hostility towards ActBlue.
«We see what this is,» the statement added. «And we’re going to keep showing up, keep correcting the record — because that’s what transparency actually looks like. Not as a talking point. As a practice.»
Paxton’s Texas lawsuit, filed April 20, seeks financial penalties and asks a state court to stop ActBlue from allowing donations through gift cards and prepaid debit cards. Paxton alleged those payment methods could obscure a donor’s identity and enable illegal contributions, including from foreign nationals. His suit also claimed ActBlue continued to process gift card donations after saying in 2024 that it would stop doing so.

ActBlue denied the allegations.
«This is a thinly veiled attempt to distract from Ken Paxton’s numerous legal and ethical issues ahead of next month’s runoff,» ActBlue spokeswoman De’Andra Roberts-LaBoo told Fox News in an April 20 statement via email. «If he and his Republican allies actually cared about donor fraud, they would work to strengthen security standards across the board, including within their own operations, rather than targeting ActBlue.
«Our platform has done more than any other, regardless of party, to prevent improper donations and protect donors. Full stop.»

Investigators from Paxton’s office attempted three times to use an American Express gift card on ActBlue’s platform, and all three attempts were rejected by the platform’s automated fraud-prevention tools, according to the complaint.
ActBlue said Paxton nevertheless filed a lawsuit accusing the group of having «secretly resumed» accepting gift cards and failed to disclose the failed test transactions to the Texas court, calling the allegations «false and inflammatory.»
«Paxton’s decision to use his government office to target ActBlue with legal sanctions as retribution for its protected speech and political association is an affront to the Constitution and must not be tolerated,» ActBlue’s lawyers wrote in the federal lawsuit.
Since its founding in 2004, ActBlue said it has helped raise $19 billion for Democratic campaigns and progressive organizations, including more than $568 million in the first quarter of 2026, acting as a conduit for individual donors.

La economía panameña acelera el paso y el IMAE registra en abril su mejor resultado de 2026
La economía panameña aceleró su ritmo de crecimiento en abril y registró su mejor desempeño en lo que va de 2026, según los datos más recientes del Índice Mensual de Actividad Económica (IMAE), un indicador considerado como el principal termómetro de la evolución económica del país.
El Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Censo (INEC) informó que el IMAE creció 5.96% en abril de 2026 respecto al mismo mes del año anterior, una cifra superior al 4.25% reportado en marzo y también por encima del 4.15% registrado en abril de 2025.
El resultado permitió que el crecimiento acumulado de la economía durante los primeros cuatro meses del año alcanzara 4.81%.
Aunque el Producto Interno Bruto (PIB) es el indicador más conocido para medir la actividad económica, su cálculo suele publicarse con varios meses de retraso.
Por esa razón, economistas, inversionistas y autoridades utilizan el IMAE como una especie de “radiografía mensual” de la economía, ya que permite identificar con mayor rapidez si la actividad productiva está creciendo, desacelerándose o entrando en una fase de contracción.
Los resultados de abril muestran una economía más dinámica que la observada durante el primer trimestre.
En enero el IMAE creció 4.13%; en febrero 4.15%; en marzo 5.06%; y en abril alcanzó 5.96%, consolidando una tendencia ascendente durante los primeros meses del año.
Uno de los principales motores del crecimiento continúa siendo el sector comercial.
El INEC destacó el buen desempeño tanto del comercio minorista como del mayorista, impulsado por las reexportaciones desde la Zona Libre de Colón, la venta de automóviles nuevos y el consumo de gasolina de 91 octanos.
El transporte también mantuvo un papel determinante.
Los ingresos por peajes del Canal de Panamá, las toneladas netas movilizadas por los buques que transitan la vía interoceánica, el transporte aéreo y el movimiento de contenedores en los puertos contribuyeron al crecimiento del sector.
La actividad financiera volvió a figurar entre los sectores con mejor comportamiento.
El aumento de los depósitos externos, la expansión de la cartera crediticia y el crecimiento de las primas de seguros reforzaron el desempeño de la banca y los servicios financieros. Entre los ramos que mostraron mayores avances destacaron salud, automóviles, vida individual, accidentes personales y seguros colectivos de vida.
Una de las diferencias más importantes respecto a marzo fue la recuperación de la construcción.
Mientras en marzo el sector figuró entre las actividades con desempeño desfavorable debido a la caída en los permisos de construcción y a una menor inversión pública en obras de ingeniería civil, en abril volvió a terreno positivo gracias al aumento en el valor de las edificaciones, adiciones y reparaciones registradas mediante los permisos otorgados.
La industria manufacturera también mantuvo una tendencia favorable. El procesamiento de carne de pollo, el sacrificio de ganado vacuno y porcino y la elaboración de derivados del tomate contribuyeron al crecimiento industrial. Sin embargo, a diferencia de marzo, cuando las bebidas gaseosas y alcohólicas ayudaron al desempeño del sector, en abril estos productos pasaron a mostrar resultados negativos.
El sector agropecuario continuó aportando al crecimiento económico.La cría de aves de corral y de ganado porcino volvió a sobresalir, acompañada por el cultivo de tomate y la producción de frutas destinadas a la exportación. En marzo destacaban la piña, la sandía y el melón; mientras que en abril el banano apareció entre los cultivos con mejor comportamiento.
El turismo siguió siendo otro de los pilares del crecimiento. Los hoteles y restaurantes mantuvieron una trayectoria ascendente gracias al incremento en la llegada de visitantes internacionales, que impulsó la ocupación hotelera y el consumo en establecimientos de alimentos y bebidas.
También destacaron los servicios de entretenimiento y juegos de azar, impulsados por las máquinas tragamonedas tipo A, las apuestas por internet y las mesas de juego.
La electricidad y el agua mostraron igualmente resultados positivos, apoyados por una mayor generación hidráulica y un incremento en el consumo energético de hogares, comercios e industrias.
No todas las actividades evolucionaron en la misma dirección.
Entre los sectores con resultados negativos en abril figuraron el cultivo de piña, la captura y exportación de pescado y filete de pescado, la generación de energía térmica, la venta de gasolina de 95 octanos, la producción de bebidas gaseosas y alcohólicas y varias líneas de producción láctea, incluyendo leche evaporada, condensada, en polvo y pasteurizada.
Las cifras reflejan una economía que mantiene una expansión relativamente sólida en comparación con los últimos años.
El crecimiento acumulado de 4.81% al cierre de abril supera el 4.14% reportado al primer trimestre y también mejora la tendencia observada durante buena parte de 2025.
Para Panamá, donde sectores como el Canal, la logística, el comercio y los servicios financieros siguen siendo fundamentales, el comportamiento del IMAE ofrece una señal temprana de que la actividad económica continúa avanzando, aunque con diferencias importantes entre los distintos sectores productivos.

It’s that work ethic born in her hometown of Caribou, molded by her parents’ separate stints as mayor of the small town in the county that helped shape her into the political titan she is today, propelling her to a record 10,000th straight vote in the Senate and a gavel atop the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee.
It’s also caused her to have the biggest target on her back in a highly contentious election cycle where Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., is once again trying to flip her seat.
Collins’ race has also become the most-watched and controversial of the cycle because of her unlikely opponent, Democratic nominee Graham Platner, who over the last several months has been rocked by scandal after scandal.
Speaking to Fox News Digital on the drive between Bangor, Maine and Portland, one she’s made several times since joining the Senate in 1997, Collins acknowledged Platner’s rocky past and present but that she still was taking him seriously as an opponent.

«I am surprised that [Gov. Janet Mills] is not my opponent,» Collins said. «That’s what I would have predicted, particularly given the very serious allegations against Graham Platner. Plus, his own words over many years, including recently. So, I think that he has a lot of questions to answer, but I do take him very seriously as a candidate.»
Platner has been no stranger when it comes to attacking Collins in his insurgent campaign, skewering her for her vote to authorize the Iraq War two decades ago or her backing of parts of President Donald Trump’s agenda.
During his acceptance speech earlier this week, he accused her of being «just as spineless and corrupt as the establishment she now serves.»
Collins, who is no stranger to heated campaigns, argued that her ability to produce results was a better metric for Mainers.
«I think when people look at the accomplishments and results that I’ve delivered for the people of Maine, that the contrast is enormous,» Collins said. «And angry rhetoric does not produce results.»
She knows how to bring the bacon home to Maine. In her climb to the top of the Senate Appropriations Committee, she’s sent back $1.5 billion over five years, dozens of new or renovated fire stations, billions in rural healthcare funding and a fire boat that saved key businesses along Portland’s waterfront when a blaze broke out.
Still, she’s in a tight race with Platner, despite the scandals and baggage.
And Schumer, who has spent years trying to beat her, hopes to seize the opportunity in this cycle, even with a candidate who was not his first choice.

Schumer told Semafor that Collins is «weaker than in 2020,» when they last squared off, arguing that her defense of Trump, her vote to confirm Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh and the role that vote played in overturning Roe v. Wade have weighed her down.
«To me, this is déjà vu all over again,» Collins said, noting that six years ago, Schumer and Democrats spent over $160 million to defeat her.
Collins contended, «Democratic leaders always distort my record,» and added that when she voted to advance Trump’s «big, beautiful bill» last year, it was so she and others could modify the bill. She ultimately voted against the final product but scored a $50 billion rural hospital fund nonetheless.
«If we can’t get on the bill, I can’t help fix that,» Collins said.
And on Kavanaugh, Collins noted that she disagreed with how he voted on Roe v. Wade, but that she also voted «for people who voted on the other side of that decision.»

«I voted for Sonia Sotomayor. I voted for Elena Kagan. I voted for Justice Jackson,» Collins said. «And that always seems to get left out.»
She doesn’t vote in lockstep with Trump, either, who recently said that Collins was «not my best friend at all,» but was a «sane woman.» That prompted a laugh from the longtime lawmaker, who noted, «I’ve worked with five different presidents, and I have never agreed with a single one of them on every issue.»
«I know that there’s some people who want me to oppose President Trump, just because he’s President Trump, and that’s not how I operate,» Collins said. «I look at each individual issue and then make my decision. And based on whether it’s helpful to the state of Maine, and improves the lives of families in the state of Maine.»

La historia de Martinha, la influencer que tiene una enfermedad que convierte sus músculos en huesos
Martinha Brito tiene 47 años, vive en la localidad braisleña de Viçosa do Ceará y se convirtió en una voz clave para visibilizar una de las enfermedades más extrañas del mundo: la Fibrodisplasia Ossificante Progresiva (FOP).
En sus redes sociales, donde suma más de 200 mil seguidores, Martinha responde preguntas sobre su rutina, desde cómo se baña hasta cómo duerme, y lo hace con una mezcla de sinceridad y buen humor.
“Soy una persona rara. Tengo una patología que no tiene cura. Los músculos se convierten en huesos, los nervios se endurecen y la persona va perdiendo toda la movilidad, transformando el cuerpo como si fuera una estatua viviente”, explicó Martinha en uno de sus videos más virales.
Un diagnóstico que llegó tarde
Martinha nació con una malformación en los dedos gordos de los pies, el primer síntoma de la FOP, aunque nadie lo supo en ese momento.
A los seis años, tras recibir una vacuna en el brazo, su madre notó que algo no estaba bien: “Cuando me fue a bañar, sintió que mi brazo estaba raro, como si la aguja se hubiera quebrado. Ahí empezó a aflojarse la musculatura y me fui quedando rígida”, recordó.

La enfermedad avanzó rápido: primero el cuello, después el brazo, y a los 16 años ya no podía sentarse ni moverse con facilidad. En ese momento, le diagnosticaron erróneamente distrofia muscular. El diagnóstico correcto de FOP llegó recién a los 32 años, tras una consulta con un médico en Sobral, en el norte de Ceará.
La aplicación de inyecciones puede acelerar la ossificación en pacientes con FOP, por eso el diagnóstico temprano es clave para evitar complicaciones.
¿Qué es la FOP y cómo se trata?
La Fibrodisplasia Ossificante Progresiva es una enfermedad genética que hace que los músculos y tejidos blandos se transformen en hueso.

No existe cura para la FOP. El tratamiento apunta a aliviar los síntomas y retrasar la progresión de la enfermedad, usando corticoides y antiinflamatorios, y requiere un equipo multidisciplinario de especialistas. “No podemos detener la enfermedad, pero sí retardar su avance”, explicó Colares.
En Brasil, se estima que hay entre 120 y 150 casos de FOP, aunque la cifra real podría ser mayor.
Lucha por derechos y reconocimiento
Martinha estudia servicio social para poder defender los derechos de personas con enfermedades raras. “Lucho no solo por mí, sino por otros que no tienen información ni saben dónde buscar ayuda”, contó.
A pesar de su exposición pública, Martinha descubrió que no figura en los sistemas de salud del estado de Ceará como paciente de enfermedad rara.
Por eso, pelea para que su diagnóstico sea reconocido oficialmente y pueda acceder a los beneficios y tratamientos que le corresponden.
El peso del prejuicio y la denuncia
Desde pequeña, Martinha enfrentó el rechazo: su padre la abandonó cuando tenía apenas tres meses.
En las redes, también recibe comentarios discriminatorios. En abril, denunció ante la Policía Civil insultos graves recibidos en uno de sus videos. La policía de Ceará confirmó que investiga el caso como un posible delito de injuria.
Avances y conquistas en la lucha contra la FOP
En 2025, Brasil sancionó una ley que obliga a incluir el test de FOP en la triage neonatal, junto con el tradicional “test del talón”.
El diagnóstico precoz puede mejorar la calidad de vida de los pacientes, ya que evita procedimientos que pueden acelerar la ossificación.
La médica Patrícia Delai, fundadora de la asociación FOP Brasil, lleva más de 20 años luchando por la concientización sobre la enfermedad. “Sentimos la necesidad de crear una asociación para unirnos, participar en estudios clínicos y recibir donaciones. Hoy tenemos más de 100 pacientes registrados en Brasil, pero sabemos que hay más casos desconocidos”, explicó.
Según la Biblioteca Nacional de Medicina de Estados Unidos, Brasil es uno de los países con más pacientes registrados de FOP en el mundo, solo detrás de China y Estados Unidos.
Martinha, con su historia y su lucha diaria, se convirtió en un símbolo de resiliencia y esperanza para quienes enfrentan enfermedades poco frecuentes en el país.
