Nearly two decades before the latest war with Iran, an explosively formed penetrator tore through a U.S. Army vehicle on a Baghdad road, killing Staff Sgt. William Brooks and leaving Sgt. (Ret.) Robert Bartlett with injuries so severe that he says he «died three times.»

The weapon was part of a broader Iranian campaign that armed and trained proxy forces to target American troops in Iraq, according to federal court findings. In cases involving hundreds of U.S. victims, judges found that Iran manufactured or supplied the weapons used in the attacks and that the assailants were trained or directed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

«It cut me in half from my temple down through my jaw, and then took my gunner’s legs off, and then took the top of my truck commander’s head off,» Bartlett told Fox News Digital. «I would end up dying three times and spent four years at the old Walter Reed receiving surgeries, reconstruction and rebuilding.»

Bartlett was driving an armored Humvee on Route Pluto in Baghdad, May 3, 2005, when an explosively formed penetrator tore through the vehicle. Staff Sgt. William Brooks was killed, while Bartlett and two other soldiers were wounded. Bartlett suffered massive facial trauma.

The Army casualty report described Bartlett as «very seriously injured,» with massive facial and dental trauma. He was the vehicle’s driver during the route-security mission when an explosive detonated from its right side.

Bartlett said the weapon was an Iranian-supplied explosively formed penetrator linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ campaign to arm militias attacking American forces in Iraq.

«When you’re blown up, you don’t know what’s hit you,» he said. «You get the information after, when the intelligence reports come down and command lets you know what you got hit by.»

Bartlett’s survival places him alongside two Gold Star families who say Iran’s long-running campaign against Americans did not begin with the latest fighting — and cannot be understood solely through the current headlines.

In the federal cases involving Sgt. (Ret.) Robert Bartlett, Capt. Shawn English and Maj. Stuart Wolfer, the courts found both that Iran manufactured or supplied the weapons used in the attacks and that the assailants were trained or directed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Federal courts later held Iran liable for providing weapons, training, financing and other material support to the proxy forces responsible for attacks on U.S. personnel in Iraq.

For their loved ones, those findings offered formal acknowledgment of Iran’s role. They did not end the grief.

‘It’s really hard to only have memories’

«He really was my best friend,» Wolfer’s sister, Beverly Wolfer Nerenberg, said in tears before her voice broke. «Sorry, even 18 years later, it doesn’t get easier to talk about.»

At her wedding, she chose not to have bridesmaids. Instead, her brother stood beside her as her «man of honor.»

«I couldn’t think of anybody else who I was closer to, who really understood me and knew me,» she said.

Wolfer was 36 and the father of three young daughters when he was killed.

His sister said he had gone to exercise with a friend when an incoming-fire warning sounded. Those inside the gym had only seconds to react and dropped to the floor because there was no time to reach a protected space.

A military investigation found that a rocket struck the gym’s roof at approximately 3:28 p.m., sending shrapnel into the building. Wolfer and Col. Stephen Scott were almost directly beneath the point of impact and suffered severe injuries. Wolfer was transported to a combat support hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Wolfer’s daughters were approximately ages 5, 3 and 18 months old when their father died, according to his sister.

«I’m beyond grateful and proud of my nieces and how they’ve grown up,» Wolfer Nerenberg said. «But it’s really hard to only have memories.»

She described the family as the keepers of Wolfer’s memory, preserving it for children who had little time to know him.

Her family was told soon after the attack that the rocket had come from the direction of Sadr City, Iraq, and was Iranian, she said.

«This war began a long time ago,» Wolfer Nerenberg said. «For many of us, the past 18 years has been one long continuous war.»

The weapon he feared killed him

Tricia English said her husband understood the threat posed by explosively formed penetrators, or EFPs —sophisticated roadside bombs designed to punch through armored military vehicles — before one killed him.

During a period of leave shortly before his death, Capt. English appeared distracted and remained awake late into the night working on his computer, she recalled.

«He told me that there were these weapons —specifically called them EFPs — that they had discovered,» she said. «They knew where they were coming from, and it was really bad.»

«He knew it was Iranian,» she added.

English was serving on a military transition team working with Iraqi forces when the EFP struck his vehicle during a convoy operation.

An Army investigation said his mixed American-Iraqi patrol was traveling north when an explosively formed projectile struck the right side of his vehicle. English was evacuated to a combat support hospital and died from his wounds.

His widow said he remained conscious during part of the evacuation and that she was told his last conscious message was: «Tell Trish and the boys that I love them.»

«You think after 20 years it wouldn’t be this hard,» she said, struggling to continue.

English said the military initially described the weapon simply as a roadside bomb or improvised explosive device. The legal proceedings later exposed her to evidence about the weapon, the people who supplied it and the broader network behind the attack.

«Sitting in the courtroom, I then got so much more information about what really happened and what this really looked like,» she said. «That was traumatizing. But he deserved it. I needed to stand up for him.»

‘Doing right by them’

Bartlett said he joined the litigation not only for himself, but for those who never returned.

«My buddy died, and plenty of my guys — plenty of people — died over there at the hands of the IRGC,» he said.

«If I was sent back, if I died and saw the other side and came back, and I’m not doing right by them and their families who didn’t get to have their child come home, then I’m not doing justice,» he said. «I’m not living my faith, and I’m not living what I fought to protect, which is the truth.»

The legal cases were brought under the terrorism exception to the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act, which allows certain American victims to sue designated state sponsors of terrorism.

Iran generally did not appear to defend the cases, resulting in default proceedings. However, the judges still required the plaintiffs to produce evidence demonstrating that Iran’s material support was a substantial factor in the attacks.

The resulting judgments found that Iran, acting through the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and its Quds Force, supplied Shiite militia groups with funding, training, weapons and technical assistance used to target Americans. Iran has not voluntarily paid the judgments, and the plaintiffs continue to face significant obstacles collecting the money they were awarded.

‘We weren’t at war with Iran’

Iran saw the fall of Saddam Hussein as both an opportunity and a threat.

With its longtime enemy removed and U.S. troops stationed next door, Tehran sought to shape Iraq’s political and security system, expand its regional influence and pressure Washington without confronting the U.S. military directly. The Quds Force cultivated Iraqi militias as proxies, providing weapons, funding and training that allowed Iran to attack American forces while maintaining a degree of deniability.

The Treasury Department has described the Quds Force as Iran’s main instrument for supporting militant groups to advance the regime’s national interests.

Tricia English said the distinction matters because American troops in Iraq were being targeted by a country against which the United States had not formally gone to war.

«We weren’t at war with Iran,» she said.

The EFP attacks required Iran’s expertise, money, intelligence, manufacturing and organized networks to transport and deploy the weapons, she said.

«To have such a sophisticated, targeted, supported, funded (operation) — it was so sophisticated,» she said. «I think it’s important for Americans to see that.»

For Bartlett and the English and Wolfer families, the latest war is not the beginning of America’s confrontation with Iran. It is another chapter in a conflict they have carried in their bodies and families for nearly two decades.

«This war began a long time ago,» Wolfer Nerenberg said. «For many of us, the past 18 years has been one long continuous war.»

For those who buried their loved ones or carried the effects of Iranian-supplied weapons home in their bodies, Iran’s war against Americans did not begin with the latest fighting — and it has never truly ended.

The court cases presented evidence that the IRGC’s Quds Force built, funded, armed and directed Shiite militia networks, supplying them with sophisticated anti-armor weapons designed to penetrate American military vehicles. The litigation also examined Iranian support for Sunni terrorist organizations operating in Iraq.

The cases challenge the perception that the attacks were solely the work of an organic Iraqi insurgency. Instead, the court findings described a broader Iranian system of proxy warfare that allowed Tehran to target American personnel through militia groups operating on the ground.

She English said successive administrations have invoked Iran’s record of killing Americans when convenient, while the families have continued waiting for meaningful accountability.

«Shawn did his job every single time his country asked him to do it, regardless of who was in power,» she said. «It’s been a little disheartening to watch our country — various administrations, people in power—not do theirs when it comes to this.»

Bartlett said Americans exhausted by decades of war must still confront the history behind the current conflict.

«You can’t add to truth and you can’t take away from it,» he said. «It just is what it is.»

For the families, that truth is measured not only in court judgments or military reports, but in missing fathers, brothers and friends—and in wounds that still hurt as sharply as they did when the telephone first rang.

La comunidad judía ha sido muy exitosa en EE. UU., lo que le permitió obtener en el pasado a la vez presencia y respeto, convirtiéndose también en el estándar mundial para los judíos fuera de Israel. Pero todo cambió a partir de la invasión sufrida por Israel el 7 de octubre del 2023. Fue el inicio de una guerra en Gaza y otra global contra los judíos señaló hace algún tiempo un editorial del Wall Street Journal. Por tratarse de EE. UU., por lo inesperado, existió un shock de tal magnitud en su comunidad judía, que le costó mucho entenderlo y adaptarse a la nueva normalidad, a las agresiones en la calle y a lo que ocurrió en las universidades. La manifestación de odio fue tan gigantesca a nivel internacional que es comprensible que nadie estaba preparado, ni ella ni nadie. Tampoco yo, que sentí la necesidad de autoafirmación por lo que tomé la decisión de usar por primera vez una kipá en toda actividad y a toda hora, con reconfortantes resultados en la actitud de simpatía de desconocidos, demostrando que, a pesar de todo, EE. UU. seguía siendo un lugar especial para los judíos, por lo menos, Florida.

Para Israel lo que se inició en Gaza se transformó en una guerra de 7 frentes cuando Irán movilizó a todos sus proxis en el Medio Oriente. Tuvo éxito en lo militar, pero también sufrió una evidente derrota en la guerra de propaganda, demostrado en la forma como la narrativa de Hamas predominó en la información periodística a través del mundo, a lo que se sumaban manifestaciones masivas contra Israel en algunas de las principales ciudades occidentales, ignorándose decenas de otros conflictos bélicos que también tenían lugar en paralelo como también que el origen había sido una invasión terrorista.

INFOBAE me ha dado tribuna para varias columnas sobre el tema y en un libro de reciente aparición (1) he argumentado que la humanidad no aprendió lo suficiente con el Holocausto como también mi impresión que a la comunidad judía le ha costado tanto recuperarse del nivel de judeofobia que también apareció en EE. UU. que quizás no hizo todo lo que pudo haber hecho por tradición, organización y recursos. Y también por tratarse de EE. UU.

Si vuelvo a escribir sobre el tema es por mi temor que todo puede empeorar antes de mejorar, causado por lo que está ocurriendo a nivel político, sobre todo en el partido Demócrata, donde su proceso interno muestra que cualquiera sea en definitiva su candidato/a presidencial va a ser alguien extremadamente crítico de Israel como también de la comunidad judía estadounidense, sobre todo del uso que hace del lobby que permite la ley. Es, sin duda, una muy poco favorable situación que se puede unir a lo que ocurriría si el candidato republicano es el actual vicepresidente JD Vance, ya que su posición aislacionista argumenta que EE. UU. no debe comprometerse fuera de su territorio, lo que se agrega a la actitud ofensiva adoptada recientemente hacia sus interlocutores israelíes. Las malas noticias no terminan allí, sino que es parte de una tendencia preocupante, toda vez que lo que está pasando a nivel político responde también a lo que muestran las encuestas, un cambio en la opinión pública tal, que está haciendo desaparecer el antiguo apoyo bipartidista a Israel.

En todo caso, lo más grave es lo que está ocurriendo al interior del partido Demócrata, que históricamente tuvo muchos dirigentes y militantes judíos. Sin embargo, en las primarias posteriores al triunfo de Zohran Mamdani en Nueva York, se han multiplicado futuros candidatos a alcaldes, representantes y gobernadores que critican abiertamente no solo a Israel, sino que al igual que el alcalde de Nueva York hacen gala de una abierta judeofobia, antes inimaginable, ahora, también preocupante por su abierta hostilidad.

Y al igual que lo que ocurrió con agresiones en las calles a quienes eran o se vestían como judíos y el fuerte aumento de los ataques constitutivos de delitos de odio a sinagogas e instituciones, la comunidad judía y sus dirigentes no han podido crear o encontrar una coalición amplia de apoyo ante el volumen de la ofensiva en su contra. Lo más grave del proceso que tiene lugar hoy entre los demócratas, es que está transformando opiniones y actitudes que eran marginales en corriente principal, algo que también se nota en algunos de los principales medios de comunicación, aquellos que crean opinión pública y son reproducidos en todo el mundo.

Para los judíos no va a ser fácil volver a influir en el partido demócrata. Que partidos cambien cada 30 o 50 años es normal. Así, los demócratas fueron alguna vez el partido del KKK en el sur del país, antes de abrazar los derechos civiles y transformarse en el partido de representación de minorías como la afroamericana. Hoy, está dejando de ser un movimiento entre liberal y socialdemócrata en el contexto estadounidense, ya que ha perdido contacto con los trabajadores y los problemas cotidianos de los votantes a cambio de postulados wokistas. Hoy, su plataforma más bien representa al graduado universitario de las grandes ciudades y todo indica que va a ser difícil que vuelva a conectarse con la problemática judía.

Grupos antisemitas han existido siempre, pero ahora hay que sumar lo que ha pasado en lugares tan inesperados como el partido político más votado por los judíos, en la prensa, en el aumento explosivo de los ataques de odio según lo informado por el FBI, institución que agrega que, aunque representan solo el 2,4% de la población, los judíos concentran más del 60% de aquellos ataques que se hacen con motivación religiosa. A lo anterior se debe sumar lo que ocurre a nivel mundial, donde el principal caldo de cultivo tiene lugar en Occidente. No sorprende que ello tenga lugar en Europa, pero sí que también ocurra en Canadá o Australia, pero por, sobre todo, que pase en EE. UU.

Es un fenómeno occidental, ya que lo que ocurre en las calles de Nueva York, Toronto, Sídney, Londres o París no se ha repetido en ningún país árabe sunita; más aún, en ninguno de ellos se dio lo que ocurrió en las universidades de élite de EE. UU., toda vez que las agresiones a docentes y estudiantes solo por ser o parecer judíos, no habían ocurrido en ningún país desde Alemania en los 30. Incluso, creo que a algunos de esos jóvenes se le dio el consejo equivocado, ya que recuerdo haber visto en TV a un portavoz de una institución judía estadounidense recomendándole a quienes sufrían en esas universidades que se retiraran de ellas en busca de un mejor ambiente, cuando lo que realmente debió haber comprometido era el apoyo de la comunidad y la preparación al más alto nivel, para que en las clases respectivas se sintieron lo suficientemente sólidos en sus conocimientos como para contradecir a esos docentes que más que enseñar, buscaban adoctrinar con su activismo en contra de Israel y los judíos.

En ningún caso son situaciones comparables, pero bueno sería indicar que, en la larga historia judía, hay al menos dos casos trágicos que ocurrieron cuando los judíos se sentían seguros: España en 1492 y, por cierto, Alemania antes del Holocausto, en ambos, con sufrimiento en antepasados familiares.

Lo de EE. UU. no ha sido un proceso repentino de un día para otro, sino que el cuento de la rana hervida sirve para explicarlo, ya que cuando ingresa a una olla llena de agua, si la temperatura es fría o tibia, la rana no reaccional al fuego, sino que se va acostumbrando y muere, a diferencia de si hubiese entrado con el agua hirviendo se habría salvado, toda vez que, en este último caso, por el calor hubiese saltado afuera.

Entonces, ¿Qué hacer?

Lo primero es reaccionar aprovechando algo de lo mejor que tiene EE. UU. en la existencia de su sistema de libertades, por lo que sí o sí hay que judicializar, acudiendo siempre a los tribunales como comunidad judía a través de sus dirigentes, judicialización que no solo debe ser individual de los afectados por actitudes antisemitas, sino también se debe hablar a nombre de la comunidad, para ayudar a buscar toda la verdad e individualizar no solo a los perpetradores, sino también a quienes lo posibilitaron o permitieron.

En segundo lugar, la comunidad debe revisarse a sí misma, como ha actuado, y si el perfil de los dirigentes nacionales actual es el adecuado para el nuevo escenario, como también si las instituciones de relaciones extracomunitaria tales como el American Jewish Committee o la Jewish Defense League deben continuar como están o debieran modificar su accionar para enfrentar el cambio de escenario y esta nueva normalidad. Aquí Israel no es ejemplo, ya que, en este tipo de actividad, partiendo por lo que se conoce como Hasbará o esclarecimiento, la verdad es que acumula muchos más fracasos que éxitos.

Tercero, o quizás en primer lugar, creo que la comunidad judía no debe inventar nada, solo imitar a quienes superando muchos obstáculos son un ejemplo para seguir, los afroamericanos, ya que a ellos no les hubiese pasado lo que les ha estado ocurriendo a los judíos. Y esto no lo digo yo, ya que ellos son los únicos a los que los he escuchado decirlo, en la opinión de comunicadores y políticos afroamericanos.

Imitándolos a ellos se estaría dando una vuelta de mano a lo que Martin Luther King decía en los 60, que aspiraba a lograr el mismo estatus que los judíos, a quienes siempre agradeció su apoyo en la lucha por los derechos civiles, además de siempre tener palabras amables para Israel y el sionismo. De ellos me gusta que, ante cualquier ofensa racista, su reacción es automática y colectiva, y en buena hora, ya que habitualmente tienen éxito, por lo que todos saben que van a haber consecuencias en el empleo y en la profesión de quien ha usado expresiones repudiables.

Cuanto me gustaría que algo parecido ocurriera con la judeofobia, que muchas veces no tiene castigo en esta frecuencia en la que ha caído lo que es la nueva normalidad para los judíos, y que se demostró en el hecho que a veces no hubo consecuencias para algunos de quienes organizaron las “acampadas” universitarias como tampoco para las autoridades universitarias, que permitieron esa hostilidad no solo a Israel sino también contra quienes identificaban como judíos.

En cuarto lugar, interesante sería revisar lo que ocurrió en el Reino Unido, donde se dio hace algunos años un proceso similar al que hoy vive el partido Demócrata, con el partido Laborista que cumple un rol semejante en la izquierda o centroizquierda del espectro político. La diferencia con lo que se vive en EE. UU. es que hubo una reacción exitosa en la comunidad judía, una respuesta adecuada que influyó en sucesivas derrotas electorales del Laborismo, ya que fue condenado por conductas antisemitas en instancias judiciales y administrativas, de tal modo, que quien había introducido el antisemitismo, Jeremy Corbyn perdió su cargo y su militancia.

La deriva hacia la judeofobia fue enfrentada por la militancia judía del laborismo como también por aquellos judíos que habían sido electos como Miembros del Parlamento. Esta es una experiencia parecida y útil que debe ser estudiada, ya que nada en fuerza semejante se nota que exista con la fortaleza debida, en representantes o senadores judíos demócratas en el Congreso. No tengo dudas que deben estar actuando y adoloridos con lo que está pasando en su partido y que están luchando contra quienes han traído consigo un discurso de odio, pero no se nota que ello ocurra a nivel público, ya que quien ha encabezado la defensa de Israel y ha arremetido contra la judeofobia es el senador Fetterman de Pennsylvania, quien hoy aparece cumpliendo ese rol.

No es que nada se haga ya que mucho se hace, pero no se nota que se haga en forma pública y lo que ocurre merece que todo sea ruidoso y no en silencio. Del mismo modo, los dirigentes comunitarios debieran exigir claridad moral a los políticos, al menos a las personas en cuyo financiamiento de campaña electoral se participa, no importando si es mucho o poco.

Por todo ello, estoy convencido que debe hacerse una revisión muy estricta de cómo participa públicamente la comunidad y probablemente el perfil que se requiere es hoy diferente al anterior al 7-X y que tanto hicieron y con tanto éxito en otro escenario, uno que hoy ha desaparecido.

Lo anterior conduce a interesarse de mejor manera en algo que no se ha hecho y solo ha ocurrido en forma marginal, por lo que, en quinto lugar, quienes tienen una responsabilidad a nivel nacional deben abordar lo que ocurre al interior de la comunidad, donde de partida al igual que en el resto del país, hay un problema serio con los más jóvenes, que crecientemente se están restando de actos y actividades comunitarias y en sinagoga de apoyo a Israel, mostrando una actitud crítica hacia ese país.

Es una situación que debe ser enfrentada en forma abierta y prioritaria, toda vez que se puede perder la centralidad que desde su fundación había tenido Israel en la vida judía, y hoy, puede transformarse en factor de división en vez de unidad, si es que no es abordado a tiempo, toda vez que no puede ni debiera ser un tema más, sino que es tan notoria la forma y la velocidad que ha adquirido la judeofobia, que Israel es la seguridad real que impediría la repetición del holocausto, que alguna vez pensé que era una situación que jamás podría repetirse de nuevo, pero hoy, no estoy tan seguro. Solo por eso Israel es hoy la mejor posibilidad de supervivencia de los judíos como judíos.

En sexto lugar, la actual situación exige algo que antes quizás no fue necesario, pero ahora es imprescindible que lo haga la comunidad como tal a través de sus dirigentes, confrontando el fuego amigo-enemigo de aquellos que vestidos de religiosos han asistido a actos pro-Irán con su argumentación que el Estado de Israel no debiera existir, sino que hay que esperar al Mesías. Lo anterior debiera hacerse para dejar en claro que esas personas solo hablan por sí mismas y no representan a la comunidad judía. Del mismo modo, debiera actuarse con fundaciones y grupos que hablan contra Israel desde una perspectiva política, principalmente desde el llamado progresismo. Tambien, igual actitud debiera tomarse, en tribunales si es necesario, con aquellos que por sus apellidos judíos se exhiben como compañeros de ruta de quienes odian a los judíos, dejando claro que no representan a la comunidad, ya que muchas veces, por decisión propia están fuera de ella.

Todo lo anterior es necesario por la confusión que crean al permitir que los organizadores digan que no son “antisemitas” sino “antisionistas”.

¿Tiene hoy la comunidad y sus líderes nacionales, estaduales o locales esa actitud? No tengo una respuesta, pero sí creo, que todo lo que existe es muy valioso, ya que toda la estructura de instituciones que relacionan a la comunidad con la sociedad que la rodea ha prestado inmensos servicios, pero la realidad que le servía de sustento ha sido cambiada hasta hacerse irreconocible, de ahí la urgencia de revisar incluso lo que se hizo después del 7-X, ya que el contexto ha seguido deteriorándose, llegando hasta una situación donde el próximo ocupante de la Casa Blanca puede ser alguien muy crítico no solo de Israel, sino también del funcionamiento de la comunidad judía, por lo que es absolutamente imprescindible preguntarse qué pasó que tantos judíos, quizás un tercio de los que votaron en Nueva York, lo hicieron por Mamdani, el símbolo actual de la judeofobia en EE. UU., que en si no debiera extrañar tanto, ya que en Alemania existió brevemente un movimiento pequeño de apoyo a Hitler en su primera y última elección en 1933, pero dada la naturaleza de lo que está ocurriendo en la politica estadunidense, se hace necesario encargar los estudios que permitan entender por qué se dio ese resultado en la más judía de las ciudades del país, ya que los primeros inmigrantes llegaron cuando todavía era Nueva Ámsterdam, aun antes que fuera parte de EE.UU.

Hoy, el tiempo no corre a favor, sino en contra. Hoy se tiene el respaldo del gobierno federal y de la Casa Blanca, pero no estoy seguro si el próximo a la próxima será igual que todos los presidentes de las últimas décadas en relación con Israel y los judíos estadounidenses. El problema es que la comunidad no controla la situación y la judeofobia está escalando, por lo que los judíos han vuelto a ser el canario en la mina, donde lo que a ellos le ocurre anticipa o advierte de posibles desgracias en camino para todos.

Es hasta injusto pedirle a la comunidad que se comprometa a una lucha que la retrotrae al siglo pasado, a etapas que al menos en EE. UU. se consideraban superadas, toda vez que es para exigir el requisito mínimo de una república democrática, cual lo es la igualdad esencial entre todos los ciudadanos, ya que le han ocurrido y le están ocurriendo situaciones que son impensadas para otras comunidades.

Es un odio demasiado grande para un pueblo demasiado pequeño. Lo único que no corresponde es agachar la cabeza o poner la otra mejilla, ya que la serpiente salió de su nido, está entre nosotros, y no regresará por sí sola al nido.

A senior House Democrat is urging his party to push back against the growing socialist wing that’s been gaining influence in recent years.

«I don’t ascribe to any of those ideas at all, and I think that there’s very little support for those ideas,» Rep. Tom Suozzi, D-N.Y., told Fox News Digital in an interview.

He compared the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) to the House Freedom Caucus, a group on the rightmost flank of the House GOP, while denouncing the DSA’s use of the word «democratic» in its name — implying its ideals were mostly socialist in nature.

«Much like the Republicans have had to deal with the Freedom Caucus, the Democrats are going to have to deal with this group,» Suozzi said. «I don’t like the idea of them using ‘democratic.’ I think that we should be, as the Democratic Party, should be fighting against that and saying, ‘You know, you shouldn’t be using the word democratic … that’s us, that’s not you.»

It comes as DSA-linked candidates are making significant inroads in primary elections across the country, even defeating incumbent House progressives in New York and Colorado.

And as Republicans work to capitalize on a burgeoning civil war within the party, Suozzi warned fellow Democrats to take the perception of a DSA takeover seriously.

«I try not to waste my time on worry. I try to take action. So I just say very clearly, ‘That’s not me and that’s not us, and this is why that’s not us, and that’s why this is not me.’ And I fight back against it,» Suozzi said. «And there are a lot of Democrats who say, ‘Oh, if you look at it, it’s just a very small percentage in very deep-blue seats. And it’s not that big a deal.’ I think that’s wrong to just discount it like that. I think you just come out head-on, and take it on and say, ‘These guys are wrong. We’ve got nothing to do with them.’»

Suozzi himself is part of an ever-shrinking group of moderates on both sides of the aisle. He’s also co-chair of the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus, which is dedicated to finding legislative solutions that both parties can get behind.

The New York Democrat is one of Republicans’ top targets in the coming midterm elections, and his November victory would be key to Democrats taking back control of the House. Suozzi’s district, anchored in the wealthy Long Island suburbs outside of New York City, was won by President Donald Trump in 2024.

He told Fox News Digital that Democrats should not focus on running against Trump the person, but rather argue about his specific policy actions.

«Your grocery prices are higher, your fuel prices are high, your health insurance costs are higher. Your energy bill is higher. Your kids can’t buy a house — all these different factors. And that’s happening because of this administration,» Suozzi argued. «I think it should be less about Trump himself. You know, when I say it should be a referendum on Trump, it should be a referendum on this administration’s performance addressing the things in your life.»

Meanwhile, Republicans have argued that a Democrat-controlled House will embolden the party’s socialist wing to take control and push policies that are unpopular with Americans.

In the Empire State, for example, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a self-described democratic socialist, has become a prominent boogeyman for the right.

Suozzi said the tactic «would be effective» if he had not distanced himself from the socialist’s policy platform early on.

«He’s a very smart guy, he’s very charismatic,» Suozzi said. «I just fundamentally disagree with his positions on things.»

But it’s not enough to speak out against the socialist left, Suozzi warned.

«I started a thing called The Promise to America, where I’ve got now 10 members of Congress signed onto it. We’re in the process of getting 200 state and local officials,» he said. «We’ve identified 10 candidates, Democratic candidates, to sign the pledge that says ‘We’re capitalist, not socialist. We’re for safety, not lawlessness. We’re proud, not ashamed of America, and we’re mainstream, we’re not extreme.’ So we’ve just got to organize, we’ve got to do the work necessary.»

Suozzi is running against Republican former state lawmaker Mike LiPetri, whom Trump endorsed to flip the seat red.
