Dem senator bankrolling Platner’s campaign ripped for downplaying abuse allegations in bombshell report

A sitting Democratic senator, who is one of Graham Platner’s top donors, is now drawing backlash for shrugging off the most recent allegations of misconduct that have followed the controversial Maine Senate candidate.
Platner has received $10,000 in the form of two $5,000 donations from Rhode Island Democratic Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse’s leadership PAC, according to Federal Election Commission records reviewed by Fox News Digital.
One donation from Whitehouse’s Ocean PAC came in March of this year. Another one was made last October. Notably, the most recent donation was made before former Governor Janet Mills, a second Democratic candidate for Senate, suspended her campaign at the end of April.
Although Whitehouse’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment, the donations show the high degree of confidence lawmakers like Whitehouse have in Platner’s ability to unseat the moderate Republican incumbent, Susan Collins, R-Maine, currently holding office in a blue-leaning state.

Whitehouse has been among Platner’s most constant supporters among lawmakers in the U.S. Senate, calling the controversial candidate «wonderfully appealing» in an interview with Politico.
«He’s off to a really strong start and has a wonderfully appealing local background and story,» Whitehouse said.
Whitehouse has remained supportive of Platner even as troubling details have emerged of Platner’s past web history, views and personal conduct. Most recently, reporting for The New York Times chronicled accounts from several of Platner’s former romantic interests, including allegations of rape fantasies, heavy drinking and violent episodes.
Despite the troubling allegations, Whitehouse told reporters he wasn’t alarmed by the reporting.
«Seems like a lot of nothing. I mean, the only one who had anything to say that seemed ‘unsettling’ was a woman who works for right-wing political operations,» Whitehouse reportedly told NOTUS after reading the article.
His reaction drew immediate backlash online.
«Whitehouse is the guy who grilled Brett Kavanaugh about ‘boofing.’ Just unreal,» Washington Free Beacon reporter Chuck Ross wrote in a post to X, recalling Whitehouse’s grilling of President Donald Trump’s 2018 Supreme Court Justice nominee over high-school slang in a search for possible improprieties.

«To the people just now learning that Sheldon Whitehouse is an amoral cretin, your ignorance to this point has been a choice,» GOP consultant Luke Thompson wrote on X.
«Is there a more contemptible man in the Senate than Sheldon Whitehouse?» TPUSA spokesperson Andrew Kolvet wrote on X.
«Sheldon Whitehouse, ringleader of the smearing of Kavanaugh, is a very bad person,» Capital Research investigative researcher Parker Thayer wrote on X.
«What an absolute dirt bag,» Republican operative Matt Whitlock wrote on X. «Dismissing a vivid account of physical abuse because it happened to a Republican operative is the most [Sheldon Whitehouse] thing I’ve ever heard.»
Amber Duke, the editor-in-chief of the DailyCaller, also blasted Whitehouse’s seemingly uneven application of scrutiny.
«What happened to this energy, Sen?» Duke said, highlighting a tweet Whitehouse had put out during Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearing.
«Today I stand with women who are brave enough to come forward with their stories of abuse and mistreatment. They deserve to be heard and credible allegations must be investigated. We must believe survivors, not bully them,» Whitehouse had written at the time.
«Sheldon Whitehouse is the same guy who accused Brett Kavanaugh of being a rapist because he wrote ‘boofing’ in his yearbook,» conservative writer Bonchie wrote on X.
Apart from the Thursday report, Platner has received backlash for making off-color remarks on sexual abuse, race and terror, for a tattoo associated with Nazi imagery, and, most recently, for potentially interacting with several women outside his marriage in inappropriate ways.
Platner has also called himself a «communist» in previous posts online.
Among other resurfaced comments, Platner once blamed rape victims for failing to protect themselves in a now-deleted Reddit post.
«How about people just take some responsibility for themselves and not so f—ed up when they wind up having sex with someone they don’t mean to?» Platner wrote in 2013.
Whitehouse has his own controversial past, including details about his family having a membership at the exclusive Bailey’s Beach Club, formerly known as Spouting Rock Beach Association, which is rumored to have an all-White clientele.
«I think the people who are running the place are still working on that, and I’m sorry it hasn’t happened yet,» Whitehouse said in 2017, referring to allowing minority members. «It’s a long tradition in Rhode Island, and there are many of them. And we just need to work our way through the issues.»

Platner, who looks poised to take the Democratic nomination to challenge incumbent Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, met with senators earlier this week, reassuring them about his prospective candidacy.
Maine will hold its Senate primaries next Tuesday.

Decenas de personas saquearon este jueves comercios dañados por los terremotos que devastaron la ciudad costera de La Guaira, en el norte de Venezuela, mientras equipos de rescate continuaban la búsqueda de sobrevivientes entre los escombros dejados por los sismos que han causado al menos 188 muertos.
Los incidentes se registraron en distintos sectores de la ciudad, una de las áreas más golpeadas por los dos terremotos ocurridos el miércoles con apenas segundos de diferencia. En medio de calles fracturadas, edificaciones colapsadas y una emergencia que mantiene a miles de personas afectadas, grupos de hombres y mujeres ingresaron a establecimientos comerciales dañados para robar productos.
Algunos de los participantes accedieron a los locales a través de estructuras parcialmente derrumbadas, mientras otros atravesaron zonas afectadas por los movimientos de tierra para llegar hasta los negocios. Entre los productos retirados había alimentos, medicamentos, bebidas y artículos para el hogar, además de equipos electrónicos como televisores, lavadoras y aparatos de aire acondicionado.
En varios casos, las personas sacaban los productos de sus empaques y los transportaban en bolsas o mochilas. Uno de los establecimientos afectados fue una farmacia ubicada en el sector Caribe de La Guaira, cuyos anaqueles quedaron prácticamente vacíos tras el ingreso masivo de personas.
Gabriel Aldana, un joven de 18 años residente de Caraballeda, relató cómo comenzó uno de los episodios.
“De un momento a otro (…) comenzaron a romper una pared que es donde estaban chucherías, refrescos y demás”, dijo al describir la situación que observó en las inmediaciones del comercio.
Escenas similares fueron reportadas en Catia La Mar, una de las localidades más afectadas por la tragedia. Allí, personas fueron vistas abandonando un negocio de alimentos con bolsas llenas de mercancía. El establecimiento presentaba daños visibles provocados por los terremotos y parte de su estructura había resultado comprometida.
Los saqueos ocurrieron mientras fuerzas de seguridad eran desplegadas en la zona. Unidades antimotines y otros cuerpos policiales fueron movilizados hacia La Guaira a través de la autopista que conecta la región costera con Caracas, en un intento por reforzar el control en las áreas afectadas.
La situación se desarrolla en medio de una de las peores emergencias registradas en Venezuela en las últimas décadas. Las autoridades informaron que al menos 188 personas murieron y otras 1500 resultaron heridas tras los terremotos de magnitud 7,2 y 7,5 registrados con apenas 39 segundos de diferencia.
La Guaira concentra buena parte de la destrucción. Edificios residenciales colapsaron, numerosas viviendas quedaron inhabitables y parte de la infraestructura pública sufrió daños de consideración. El principal aeropuerto internacional del país también resultó afectado y permanece fuera de servicio.
Mientras tanto, familiares de desaparecidos continúan recorriendo hospitales, refugios y zonas de derrumbes en busca de información sobre sus seres queridos. Las redes sociales se han convertido en uno de los principales canales para difundir fotografías, nombres y solicitudes de ayuda.
“Fue terrible. Todo, todo se desplomó”, afirmó Yilsmaris Blanco al describir los momentos posteriores a los sismos. La mujer señaló que muchas familias permanecen a la espera de noticias sobre parientes que quedaron atrapados bajo los escombros.
La desesperación también se hizo evidente en otros puntos de Catia La Mar. Dani Rizo, vecino de la zona, pidió apoyo para rescatar a una niña que permanecía atrapada en una estructura colapsada.
“¡Se necesita gente que venga a ayudar, militares, que vengan a ayudar!”, expresó mientras continuaban las labores de búsqueda.
Las autoridades mantienen además la vigilancia ante las más de 130 réplicas registradas desde los terremotos principales.
Venezuela se encuentra en una región de actividad sísmica asociada a la interacción de las placas tectónicas del Caribe y Sudamérica, aunque eventos de esta magnitud son poco frecuentes. El último gran terremoto ocurrido en el país se registró en 1997 en Cariaco, mientras que Caracas no experimentaba una tragedia similar desde 1967.

An Obama-appointed judge blocked President Donald Trump’s effort to curb noncitizens from registering to vote or voting in federal elections.
«President Trump is committed to ensuring that Americans have full confidence in the administration of our elections. The President’s executive order lawfully protects our elections, and we are confident that we will ultimately prevail in its implementation,» White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson told Fox News Digital.
The lawsuit centers on President Trump’s March executive order, Executive Order (EO) 14248, which directed the creation of a federal voter registration list and imposed new restrictions on eligibility for voting by mail as part of the administration’s broader effort to combat voter fraud.
U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani ruled Thursday that the president does not have the power to set election rules because only Congress and the states have that authority. Talwani has served on the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts since 2014, after then-President Barack Obama appointed her to the bench.

The lawsuit also comes after Trump recently threatened to withhold support for the bipartisan 21st Century Housing Act in an effort to pressure Congress to pass the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act.
«President Trump has also urged Congress to pass the SAVE America Act and other legislative proposals that would establish a uniform standard of photo ID for voting, prohibit no-excuse mail-in voting, and end the practice of ballot harvesting to secure our elections for generations to come,» Jackson added.
Trump’s EO ordered a federal voting registration list and directed the U.S. Postal Service to deliver mail-in ballots only to individuals on said list.

Talwani’s ruling prevents the administration from enforcing those provisions ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm elections.
The lawsuits were brought by a coalition of states led by California Attorney General Rob Bonta, joined by 22 other states and the District of Columbia as well as voting rights organizations.
The decision found that Trump exceeded his authority by trying to change election rules through executive action, writing that the Constitution gives that power to Congress and the states, not the White House.

The ruling follows a decision Tuesday that struck down parts of President Donald Trump’s March election integrity executive order titled, «Preserving and Protecting the Integrity of American Elections.»
Obama-appointed U.S. District Judge Denise J. Casper found that the order went beyond enforcing existing law and instead attempted to create or change election rules on its own.
The decision blocks the administration from requiring documentary proof of citizenship for federal voter registration, changing voting rules for military and overseas voters, or withholding election funding from states that reject certain election rules, including counting ballots received after Election Day.
Trump abruptly canceled the signing of the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act on Wednesday and issued an ultimatum demanding passage of the SAVE Act.
The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act includes Trump’s long-sought voter ID and citizenship verification requirements ahead of the midterm elections.

La rápida oferta de ayuda de Estados Unidos refleja el realineamiento diplomático entre la administración Trump y el gobierno interino venezolano, liderado por Rodríguez.
El subsecretario de Estado Christopher Landau dijo también en la noche del miércoles que Estados Unidos estaba en contacto con las autoridades venezolanas y movilizando ayuda para el país.
La presidenta Rodríguez declaró el estado de emergencia el miércoles por la noche y luego dijo que al menos 164 personas murieron y 971 resultaron heridas, aunque se estima que la cifra podría aumentar dado los cuantiosos daños.

En un mensaje en video publicado el jueves por la mañana, Rodríguez agradeció a la administración Trump por brindar «apoyo y solidaridad», y a la República Dominicana por enviar equipos de rescate a Venezuela.
China y Brasil han enviado ayuda humanitaria al país, dijo, y el gobierno de Qatar ha preparado una brigada de rescate que llegará este jueves.
El secretario de Estado Marco Rubio dijo el jueves que el Departamento de Guerra desempeñaría un papel logístico en la asistencia ante el desastre, ya que los terremotos dañaron el aeropuerto de Caracas. «Será grande, rápida y efectiva», dijo Rubio sobre la respuesta del gobierno de EE. UU. al desastre.
También afirmó que es un «retroceso» para los esfuerzos de estabilización en Venezuela, tras la intervención militar de enero. No se sabe aún cuánto daño pudo haber sufrido la producción y cadena de suministro petrolera.
Estados Unidos busca primero la recuperación económica del país, con la base en la producción del petróleo. Washington es el mayor comprador de petróleo de Venezuela desde enero, con las exportaciones controladas por EE.UU. que se dispararon a 3.700 millones de dólares en abril desde 600 millones en enero, según el Council on Foreign Relations, estimando que 8.000 millones en flujos han pasado por el acuerdo con poca transparencia o supervisión. India y España son los siguientes mayores receptores.
