DOJ charges 2 Chinese nationals who allegedly ran overseas cryptocurrency scam center targeting Americans

The Justice Department unveiled charges Thursday against two Chinese nationals allegedly behind an overseas cryptocurrency scam center, as U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro vowed that the Trump administration is «just getting started» in combating these schemes.
Pirro told reporters in Washington, D.C., that cyber-enabled and cryptocurrency investment fraud is «among the fastest growing and the most financially devastating form of cybercrime that is targeting Americans today.» The DOJ’s actions come after Pirro launched the Scam Center Strike Force in November last year, following an executive order from President Donald Trump.
«Today, we announce significant milestones in that fight. We have charged Chinese bosses who ran a scam compound in Burma where thousands were trafficked, enslaved, beaten and then forced to steal from Americans for years. We have seized also a Telegram channel, and that channel was luring workers into a forced compound in Cambodia,» Pirro said. «There they were ordered to pose as U.S. banks, as the New York City Police Department, to steal Americans’ life savings.»
«We have taken down more than 500 websites. They were used to steal Americans life savings. My office is going to continue to work to identify the funds stolen,» Pirro added. «We have also restrained more than $700 million in cryptocurrency from U.S. victims of fraud. The administration of President Trump is lockstep in combating these scams, and we are just getting started.»

The Justice Department said the two Chinese nationals, identified as Huang Xingshan and Jiang Wen Jie, were arrested in Thailand earlier this year after allegedly being linked to «cryptocurrency investment fraud operations» out of the Shunda compound in Burma. The pair were charged with wire fraud conspiracy and the U.S. is working to extradite them to face justice on American soil, according to Pirro.
«The Shunda compound operated from at least January 2025 until approximately November 2025, when it was seized by the Karen National Liberation Army of Burma. The compound used scam websites and mobile applications disguised as legitimate investment platforms to defraud victims, including Americans,» the DOJ said. «Workers within the compound were trafficked individuals who were held against their will and forced to defraud victims under the threat of violence and torture.»
«According to the investigation, Huang served at Shunda as a high-level manager and enforcer and personally participated in the physical punishment of trafficked compound workers. Jiang served as a team leader directly supervising workers who specifically targeted American victims,» the DOJ added. «Under Jiang’s supervision, one of the people under his command successfully defrauded a single American victim of over $3 million utilizing a fraudulent investment platform. The theft was celebrated within the organization as a paradigm of success.»

Officials said after the Shunda compound was seized, «Huang and Jiang relocated to another scam compound located in Cambodia where they attempted to continue their cryptocurrency investment fraud operation» before their arrests.
«The Strike Force conducted a first-of-its-kind seizure of a Telegram channel with more than 6,000 followers that was used to recruit individuals to travel to Cambodia under false promises of high-paying employment. Once there, recruited workers were held against their will and forced to defraud victims, including Americans, as part of a sophisticated law enforcement impersonation scheme,» the DOJ also said.
On Thursday, Pirro called on Telegram co-founder Pavel Durov to shut the channel down.
«Now, the workers, though, who responded to these jobs, they end up posing as banks, as police officers, as prosecutors. They sound like Americans, directing Americans to fork over their money or be prosecuted. They have backgrounds and backdrops where they actually look like they are from an official agency,» Pirro said.

«Folks, this isn’t abstract. It is hitting your neighbors, your friends, and your parents’ retirement accounts. Some of these victims are so distraught that they end up taking their own lives. This is economic homicide,» she added. «We have seized the sites and we are coming for the rest. These criminals thought they were untouchable because they were overseas. Today we are proving them wrong and we are just getting started.»

Spencer Pratt’s independent bid to make the Los Angeles mayoral runoff hangs in the balance nearly a week after Election Day.
With the jungle primary leaving incumbent Democrat Mayor Karen Bass already ruled to have advanced to a November runoff, Pratt’s margin over Democrat City Councilmember Nithya Raman has slimmed to just 1% with a few thousand ballots left to make up the difference.
Pratt led Raman by just 7,494 votes in the latest AP elections tally with 78% of the vote counted to date. Bass remained in first place with 235,180 votes (34.8%), while Pratt had 184,596 votes (27.3%) and Raman had 177,102 votes (26.2%).
Los Angeles County continues to count ballots postmarked on or before Election Day and received by Tuesday, June 9, drawing the attention of the Republican National Committee. The election results must only be counted within 30 days and certified by July 10.

«The California primary ended on June 2, 2026; yet California is still counting ballots,» the RNC website tracker counting the seconds since polls closed reads.
«The state’s election system is a complete joke. The RNC is tracking every hour it takes California to finish the count.»
The latest ballot update gave Raman another boost, as she picked up 23,514 votes in the latest batch, more than double Pratt’s 10,336-vote gain. That cut Pratt’s lead by 13,178 votes in a single day and pushed the contest for second place into uncertain territory.
Pratt posted a meme to X decrying the ongoing ballot count in the race.
«Me trying to figure out how votes get counted in LA,» he wrote Saturday night.

Under California’s top-two primary system, if no candidate wins more than 50% of the votes, the two highest vote-getters advance to the general election. The AP reported that Bass advanced to the runoff after finishing first in the crowded mayoral primary, while Pratt and Raman continued battling for the remaining November spot.
Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., pointed to California Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom when discussing the delayed results.
«The question to the rest of the world is what happened to California elections? Well, I’ll tell you, it’s Gavin Newsom,» McCarthy told Fox News’ «Sunday Morning Futures.» «When Gavin Newsom was elected governor of California, you knew who was elected in a day to two days. Now it takes more than weeks, almost a month.»
«Why did we get here?» McCarthy continued. «Gavin changed a number of election laws in which you want to see is what did he do and why did he cause it?»

The slow count has drawn heightened attention because later-counted ballots have steadily cut into Pratt’s lead.
Longtime Democrat strategist Michael Trujillo told The California Post on Saturday that the trend pointed to a likely runoff appearance for Raman, calling the late ballot counting «normal» for California and telling critics to «go back to where you came from.»
«I was always a little jealous of east coast elections getting so much attention in the media and on this app, yeah nevermind,» he wrote on X. «The stupidity from these out of state analysts and reporters and the bots and fake accounts it brings to what is really a very NORMAL process happening in Los Angeles and California is annoying.

Conservatives on X are decrying the probability of Pratt being shut out of the runoff.
«Spencer Pratt is likely going to be overtaken by far left Nithya Raman today,» Robby Starbuck wrote on X. «This graph shows the count on Election Day through last night. «Nithya did this by suddenly winning 1st in every new ballot drop.
«North Korean ‘elections’ have more self respect. Even they’d find it absurd for 3rd to suddenly jump to 1st place in every ballot drop DAYS after an election. It’s just ludicrous.»
That post also brought the attention of X owner Elon Musk.
«The reason ID is banned in California (and New York) elections is to enable large-scale fraud,» Musk claimed on X, replying to Starbuck’s post. «When you combine no ID and mail-in voting, fraud is de facto legalized.»

Starbuck noted the historic run Raman’s count has made.

RNC RAILS AGAINST CALIFORNIA’S LATE MAIL-IN BALLOT COUNTING AMID NATIONAL LITIGATION: ‘IT IS ABSURD’
Americans «want to see election integrity,» McCarthy told host Maria Bartiromo on Sunday.
«They want to see transparency and they want to see timely reporting: We had that in California,» McCarthy, a former Republican House member in the deep-blue state, said. «We were very liberal in the rules about absentee ballots, but we had accountability.»
«We had cut off voter registration 30 days before the election. That helps the registrars to know who’s going to vote and the candidates,» he continued. «Now we have same day voter, and you don’t have to show ID. Gavin changed the rules where he mails ballots to everyone. So he took away the choice to Californians to vote in person or to vote absentee. Everybody gets mailed a ballot. But he didn’t clean up the rolls. So that raises doubt in people’s minds.»
McCarthy noted Raman’s Election Night disappointment was originally telling.
«When you look at the LA mayor’s race, the third place person gave it like a concession speech that night and cried, and she was getting the most votes in the last drop,» McCarthy said. «So if she didn’t even believe that she could move up, that puts in question to the whole election itself. And that’s why it brings doubt to people.»
President Donald Trump had weighed in, too, with the RNC pointing to the pending Watson v. RNC Supreme Court decision on late ballot counting due soon.

Seis lesionados, entre ellos un bebé, tras múltiples accidentes de tránsito en San Salvador
Una racha de accidentes de tránsito ha encendido las alarmas entre agentes policiales y socorristas en San Salvador, tras registrarse múltiples percances de forma simultánea. Durante las primeras horas del domingo se reportaron al menos seis lesionados, entre ellos el motorista de un microbús del transporte colectivo el cual quedó atrapado entre los hierros retorcidos y un menor de solo cuatro meses que viajaba en un vehículo particular.
En uno de los hechos principales, un bebé de cuatro meses resultó lesionado cuando un microbús de la ruta 29-A chocó con un vehículo sedan en la intersección de la 3.ª avenida Norte y 3.ª calle Poniente, en San Salvador. Según información preliminar, el microbús, placas MB 1-736, conducido por Mauricio Molina, de 34 años, habría colisionado contra el automóvil por exceso de velocidad.
El impacto dejó la unidad contra un poste y al motorista atrapado dentro del vehículo, por lo que fue necesario diferentes maniobras de rescate por parte de socorristas de Cruz Verde y Cruz Roja. Posteriormente, el conductor fue trasladado al Hospital Zacamil. Mientras en el sedán viajaban Sergio Alexander Cárcamo, una joven identificada como Katerin y Jhonatan Alexander, de cuatro meses, quienes sufrieron múltiples lesiones de distinta gravedad.
En otro percance ocurrido durante la madrugada, dos personas resultaron lesionadas en un accidente sobre el bulevar Venezuela, en el barrio Lourdes, San Salvador. El incidente se produjo cuando un vehículo particular invadió el carril contrario al adelantar en una curva. Esto provocó que el automóvil impactara contra varios vehículos estacionados en la zona.
Después del choque, el vehículo involucrado se incendió. Las personas afectadas recibieron atención inmediata por parte de socorristas de Cruz Verde, quienes después de estabilizarlos en la zona los trasladaron a un centro asistencial.
En un tercer hecho, dos hombres fueron atendidos por Comandos de Salvamento en un accidente registrado sobre la carretera que va de Sonsonate hacia San Salvador, cerca del desvío al Cerro Verde, en Izalco. Según la información disponible, un vehículo particular chocó contra otro automóvil que estaba estacionado al costado de la vía.
Uno de los involucrados sufrió una laceración en la cabeza y múltiples golpes en el cuerpo, mientras que el otro salió ileso. Ambos recibieron atención prehospitalaria en el lugar y no fue necesario trasladarlos a un centro asistencial.
El territorio salvadoreño enfrenta un aumento significativo en la frecuencia de accidentes de tránsito a nivel nacional. En lo que va de 2026, el Observatorio Nacional de Seguridad Vial ha registrado más de 10,000 accidentes. Entre el 1 de enero y el 6 de junio, la institución contabilizó 10,136 siniestros viales, cifra que supera los 8,883 casos reportados en el mismo periodo de 2025.
El incremento también se refleja en la cantidad de personas lesionadas. En los primeros meses de 2026, se han reportado 6,891 lesionados, 1,316 más que en 2025. Estos datos muestran tanto el aumento de los incidentes como su gravedad e impacto social.
