Condenaron a dos mujeres por matar a su hijo adoptivo de 12 años: lo encerraban en el sótano y pesaba 22 kilos
Un tribunal de Ontario dictó este martes un fallo que sacudió a toda la comunidad: Becky Hamber y Brandy Cooney fueron encontradas culpables de asesinar a un niño de 12 años y de encerrar a su hermano menor, a quienes intentaban adoptar.
La decisión del juez Clayton Conlan se escuchó en medio de un silencio tenso en la sala de Milton, donde los presentes no pudieron contener la sorpresa y el dolor.
En su testimonio, Cooney se describió a sí misma y a Hamber como madres cariñosas pero frustradas que luchaban por lidiar con dos niños que, según ella, presentaban graves problemas de desarrollo derivados de traumas sufridos en la primera infancia.
Un crimen que expuso el drama de la infancia vulnerable
Las mujeres enfrentaban cargos por asesinato en primer grado tras la muerte del chico, ocurrida en diciembre de 2022. Además, la Justicia las responsabilizó por varios delitos, entre ellos privación ilegítima de la libertad del hermano menor.
Según el canal público CBC, las dos mujeres fueron acusadas de encerrar al niño de 12 años en su habitación del sótano durante 18 horas al día.

El análisis de sus celurares reveló una serie de maltratos y castigos: desde golpear y atar a los nenes, encerrarlos, obligarlos a subir y bajar escaleras y privarlos de comida.
Los fiscales destacaron el hecho de que los niños permanecían encerrados en sus habitaciones desde las 6 de la tarde hasta el mediodía la mayoría de los días y solo se les permitía salir una vez en mitad de la noche, cuando los despertaban para que fueran al baño.
Mientras estaban en sus habitaciones, los niños también se veían obligados a hacer ejercicio vestidos con trajes de neopreno mientras sus madres los vigilaban a través de cámaras de seguridad.
La víctima pesaba apensas 22 kilos cuando murió, lo mismo que un nene de seis años.
En su sentencia, el juez Conlan escribió que la decisión de las dos mujeres de aislar y confinar a la víctima en su habitación del sótano, privándolo de comida, “demostraba la intención de matar al niño”.

Según la investigación, los chicos estaban bajo el cuidado de Hamber y Cooney como parte de un proceso de adopción. La tragedia salió a la luz cuando los servicios de emergencia acudieron a la vivienda y encontraron al niño sin signos vitales.
“En el momento de su muerte, L., el mismo niño que solía sonreír para la cámara y jugar afuera frente a la casa, estaba desnutrido. Se encontraba en un estado de extrema delgadez. Los primeros en llegar al lugar no podían comprender cómo el niño pequeño y extremadamente delgado que yacía en el suelo del sótano podía tener realmente 12 años”, escribió el juez.
Su hermano menor, “J.”, fue separado de sus madres por los servicios de protección infantil y finalmente se reunió con su madre biológica.
Algunas búsquedas en internet descubiertas durante los registros policiales de dispositivos electrónicos en el hogar incluyeron: “odio a mi hijo adoptivo” y “ya no quiero a mi hijo adoptivo”.
Las dos mujeres solían referirse a los chicos con una serie de términos degradantes, entre ellos: “p…, cara de p…, vago de mierda, idiota, perdedor, imbécil, vomitador, cretino, cabrón, bastardo y estúpido”.
Algunas de las búsquedas de las mujeres en Internet incluían términos como “mordazas para niños”, “camisas de fuerza”, “chaquetas de sujeción” y “trajes de neopreno”.

También investigaron la posibilida de generarle una sobredosis con antidepresivos. En uno de los mensajes, Hamber le dijo a Cooney: “Lo estrangulaste y lo tiraste al suelo”.
El dolor de una familia y el reclamo de justicia
A la salida del tribunal, la fiscal Monica MacKenzie expresó que espera que el veredicto aporte “algún grado de responsabilidad”, aunque reconoció que “ningún resultado puede reparar el daño causado”.
“Este fue un caso excepcionalmente trágico, con un impacto profundo en muchas personas. Se perdió la vida de un niño y otro sufrió abusos graves durante años”, remarcó la fiscal, visiblemente afectada.
Por su parte, el abogado defensor de Hamber, Monte MacGregor, sostuvo que su clienta “mantiene su inocencia y su amor por ambos chicos”. El letrado se mostró sorprendido por el fallo, ya que, según él, las mujeres habían pedido ayuda médica el día anterior a la muerte del niño, lo que “demostraba sus verdaderas intenciones”.
“No creí que se pudiera sostener el cargo de asesinato, que requiere intención y propósito de quitar una vida. Pero el juez no coincidió con nuestra postura”, señaló MacGregor, quien adelantó que analizarán posibles apelaciones.
Un sistema bajo la lupa: críticas a la protección infantil
El defensor fue más allá y apuntó contra el sistema: “Hubo un fracaso sistémico absoluto por parte de la Children’s Aid Society, de los médicos y de quienes llegaron demasiado tarde para hacer algo por estos chicos”.
“Espero que las instituciones y el gobierno tomen nota de lo que pasó, porque es una tragedia que no haya habido más control y compromiso de quienes deben proteger a los niños”, sentenció.
El recuerdo de los chicos y el pedido de respeto
En una carta enviada por su abogada, la madre biológica de los chicos los describió como “seres increíbles, divertidos e inteligentes, con personalidades enormes”.
“Quiero que la gente entienda que no somos solo un caso o una historia. Somos personas reales, una familia que atravesó el dolor más grande. Ellos eran niños inocentes que merecían ser amados, protegidos y sentirse seguros”, escribió.
Por cuestiones legales, la identidad de los chicos y de su madre permanece bajo reserva.
La audiencia de sentencia se realizará en los próximos días. El asesinato en primer grado en Canadá implica prisión perpetua sin posibilidad de libertad condicional por 25 años.

A powerful Virginia Democratic lawmaker’s online jab at President Donald Trump that «no one is above the law» is coming back to haunt her after her office and a business she co-owns were raided by the FBI Wednesday.
State Sen. L. Louise Lucas, a major power broker in Virginia politics and ally of Democratic Gov. Abigail Spanberger, is known for hot takes, often laced with vulgar language, that she frequently posts on social media. In 2023, she posted that then-former President «Donald Trump just learned no is above the law!»
Now, her post is garnering new attention following the news of the FBI raids, with X users pointing the finger back at her.

Caroline Wren, a political operative and former Trump fundraiser, referenced another post of Lucas’ from 2022, in which the Democrat wrote, «I want to see voters showing the kind of overwhelming numbers at the polls that the FBI showed today at Mar a Lago!» Wren wrote, «This aged well.»
Lucas’ office and weed dispensary business were raided Wednesday as part of a court-authorized federal corruption and illegal marijuana sale probe, federal law enforcement sources told Fox News. In total, 10 locations associated with Lucas were raided by the FBI.
This, too, drew mockery from Lucas’ critics, who pointed to her «Ten f—– one» slogan, referring to Virginia’s recently passed redistricting map that favors Democrats in 10 of the state’s congressional districts, likely leaving only one Republican district.
Former Virginia legislator Nick Freitas posted, «@SenLouiseLucas: ‘10 to f-ing 1’ FBI: ‘How about 10 to f-ing life.’»
Arlington County GOP Chair Matthew Hurtt posted on X, «Louise Lucas asked [a] Fox News reporter where else the FBI was raiding. Apparently, 10 locations. There’s a TEN F*CKIN’ ONE joke in there somewhere.»
Talk radio host Erick Erickson, meanwhile, predicted that «no wagons will be circled for Louise Lucas because the VA Dems have known for a while.»

Lucas was not universally reviled in response to the raids. Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas, who bears no relation to the Virginia Democrat, posted on his personal X account, «They need to leave Louise Lucas alone.»
Virginia House Speaker Don Scott, a Democrat, also released a statement on Wednesday in which he said he is «deeply concerned by today’s FBI raid.»
«Given the politicization of this administration — an FBI led by Kash Patel and a Justice Department run by President Donald Trump’s former personal attorney — I think people should take this with a grain of salt and allow the facts to come out before jumping to a conclusion,» he wrote.
Notably, a federal law enforcement source familiar with the case clarified that the corruption probe was opened by the FBI during the Biden administration.
Virginia Republican Delegate Tim Anderson, who was previously sued by Lucas for defamation in a case that was ultimately thrown out, also responded. Anderson wrote, «What they have or don’t have on Senator Lucas will be something for the courts to work through if the DOJ initiates criminal charges.»

A spokesperson for Spanberger told Fox News Digital that the governor «is aware of today’s law enforcement operation in Portsmouth.» The spokesperson added that «in the absence of additional details, the governor will not be commenting on a federal investigation at this time.»

Virginia Democratic Attorney General Jay Jones, who has faced his own share of controversy over violent text messages he previously sent, also weighed in. Jones said in a statement that «we simply do not have sufficient information about the reported FBI activity in Portsmouth. However, several previous actions of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia have undermined public confidence in that office.»

Primeros 100 días de Nasry Asfura: entre expectativas económicas y retos en salud y educación
Los primeros 100 días de gestión del presidente Nasry Asfura continúan generando análisis desde distintos sectores políticos y económicos.
Mientras algunas voces observan señales orientadas a la estabilidad y la inversión, otras advierten que el nuevo gobierno enfrenta desafíos profundos relacionados con institucionalidad, corrupción y capacidad de gestión.
La socióloga Julieta Castellanos sostiene que las recientes elecciones modificaron significativamente la correlación de fuerzas en el sistema político hondureño. En su análisis, el partido Libertad y Refundación (Libre) perdió capacidad de incidencia tanto política como institucional, especialmente dentro del Congreso Nacional.
Para la académica, esta configuración representa una prueba decisiva para el país y para las fuerzas tradicionales que vuelven a dominar el tablero político.
Castellanos agrega que “la ciudadanía mantiene altos niveles de desconfianza hacia la clase política debido a los constantes señalamientos de corrupción e impunidad que han marcado los últimos años».
Mientras que, entre los temas pendientes aparecen procesos impulsados por la Misión de Apoyo contra la Corrupción y la Impunidad en Honduras (MACCIH), el denominado narco video, el caso de la presunta estafa financiera de Koriun y señalamientos respecto al manejo de recursos en la Corte Suprema de Justicia y otras instituciones estatales y se plantea dudas sobre la capacidad del nuevo gobierno para enfrentar investigaciones y casos emblemáticos relacionados con corrupción y crimen organizado.
La exrectora también cuestionó el arranque operativo del gobierno de Asfura y señala “Todavía no se observan transformaciones profundas” en sectores históricamente afectados como salud, educación y seguridad pública.
La académica considera que, a pesar de las expectativas generadas por el cambio de gobierno, persisten problemas estructurales que durante años han limitado el fortalecimiento institucional del país.
Desde el ámbito económico, el economista del Foro Social de la Deuda Externa y Desarrollo de Honduras (FOSDEH), Mario Palma, destaca algunos avances durante los primeros 100 días de gobierno, especialmente en materia de confianza económica y atracción de inversión.
Palma considera que “varias de las medidas impulsadas por la administración de Asfura podrían contribuir a reducir la incertidumbre económica y fortalecer la percepción de estabilidad nacional”.
Así mismo, y al cumplirse cien días de haber iniciado su mandato, el gobierno de Nasry Asfura enfrenta un escenario marcado por altas expectativas y desafíos persistentes.
Entre los aspectos positivos, resalta las negociaciones con el Fondo Monetario Internacional y el retorno de Honduras al Centro Internacional de Arreglo de Diferencias Relativas a Inversiones (CIADI).
“Estas acciones generan señales de mayor certidumbre para el capital extranjero y para los mercados internacionales”, afirma el economista.
En su visión, la estabilidad macroeconómica y la generación de confianza resultan fundamentales para atraer inversión y dinamizar la economía hondureña.
El representante de FOSDEH también subraya el énfasis oficial en seguridad, al considerar que este factor incide directamente tanto en la ciudadanía como en la confianza de inversionistas nacionales e internacionales.
Palma advierte: “El objetivo es reactivar la economía y mejorar los indicadores”, al referirse a la estrategia económica del gobierno. No obstante, señala que los avances iniciales no eliminan los problemas estructurales que históricamente han limitado la competitividad del país.
Mientras sectores económicos observan señales favorables en materia de estabilidad y apertura a la inversión, voces académicas y analistas políticos mantienen cuestionamientos sobre la capacidad del nuevo liderazgo para transformar prácticas históricas vinculadas a corrupción, gobernabilidad y debilidad institucional.

Incumbent Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, Republican challenger Spencer Pratt, and Democratic Socialists of America-aligned city councilwoman Nithya Raman squared off in a heated nonpartisan debate on Wednesday as the city heads toward its June 2 mayoral primary.
The debate, hosted by NBC4 and Telemundo 52, centered on questions of public safety, affordability and immigration. Conservative commentators on social media, as well as some on the left, generally felt that Pratt exceeded expectations as he jumps into politics following his history as a reality star on «The Hills.»
Fox News Digital took a look back at the top moments of the debate, including Bass confronting top issues such as the Palisades fires that tore through Southern California in 2025.

‘Stabbed in the neck’
«First off, Inside Safe, I like to say Inside Safe makes all of us outside, unsafe,» Pratt said near the midpoint of the debate.
Inside Safe is a municipal program spearheaded by Bass intended to take people out of homeless encampments and bring them into temporary or permanent indoor housing. A city report found that it spent $300 million on the project, which assisted roughly 6,000 people, 40% of whom have since ended up back on the streets.
«The reality is, no matter how many beds you give these people, they are on super meth,» Pratt continued. «They are on fentanyl. The DEA statistic says 93% of this is a drug addiction problem. I will go below the Harbor Freeway tomorrow with [Raman] and we can find some of these people she’s going to offer treatment for. She’s going to get stabbed in the neck.»

‘This is a yes or no question’
Near the end of the debate, moderator Enrique Chiabra asked the three candidates a straightforward question.
«I want to ask you all three if this is a yes or no question and answer,» Chiabra said. «So there’s an LA council member. He wants voters to decide. He is saying that non-citizens, should they be allowed to vote in local elections. Is this a yes or no, Mr. Pratt?»

Pratt answered in a single word: «No.»
Bass gave a longer answer, differentiating between green card holders and illegal immigrants, pointing out that some cities allow the former category to vote in local elections.
Raman, meanwhile, gave an answer that a Los Angeles Times columnist described as «tongue-tied.»
«Yeah, I would say again, it does depend in other places, school boards have non-citizens, non-citizens who are residents who vote for these,» she began to say, before a moderator cut her off.
‘The most dangerous thing that the mayor put us up against’
Early in the debate, Pratt took a jab at Bass over her handling of the January 2025 Pacific Palisades fires.
«To the mayor, Karen Bass, the thousand firefighters that were available, but there [were] no engines for them because of the $17 million that Chief Crowley had asked the mayor for nine weeks before, and Mayor Karen Bass denied it,» Pratt said. «Not to mention Janisse Quinones, who Mayor Karen Bass put into a position of power at the LA DWP. She drained both of these reservoirs that these firefighters needed to put out these fires.»

Pratt called Bass’ conduct in the lead-up to the fires «the most dangerous thing that the mayor put us up against.»
‘Mayor Bass and I are definitely not working together’
Raman, who has been struggling to break through in the polls, accused Bass and Pratt during the debate of working together to block her out of the general election.
«You’re going to watch today as Mayor Bass and Spencer Pratt attack me because they want to run against each other in the general election,» Raman said, directly addressing debate viewers.
«First off, Mayor Bass and I are definitely not working together,» Pratt responded. «I blame this person for burning my house and my parents house and my town and all my neighbors down.»

He went on to point out that Bass’ strong relationship with labor unions and her status as incumbent mayor made her a stronger opponent than Raman, in his view.
Pratt concluded his statement by dismissing Raman as a «random council member.»
‘Public safety should be our number one priority’
As the debate shifted to public safety, Pratt took an opportunity to slam Raman for historically advocating for decreased police funding.
«Councilwoman Raman keeps saying that the police department is over funded public safety – should be our number one priority,» he said. «And we’re going to find all this money when we stop her useless open bed plans. That actually doesn’t put drug addicts in these housing, that we’re spending billions of dollars, and we’re going to actually start checking where this money is going.»
