Dems abandon candidate who said MAGA is ‘more destructive’ than Nazis, but she’s stuck on the ballot

A Democrat running for the state legislature in battleground North Carolina remains on the ballot despite her party publicly abandoning her after inflammatory social media posts she made resurfaced.
The North Carolina House Democratic Caucus and a county party group both condemned posts by Shelly Headen in which the legislative candidate called for an attack on U.S. soil targeting red states and compared President Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler.
But Headen remains a candidate because the filing deadline to drop out of the race was Aug. 20, and the general election ballots are finalized and were sent out to voters starting on Sept. 4.
Headen, who is challenging Republican state Rep. John Blust for the House District 62 seat in Greensboro-anchored Guilford County, posted a year ago, «I think our only hope is an attack on US Soil … preferably Alabama, Louisiana … where the stupid people live.»

In separate posts, she argued that the damage done by Trump was «getting close to surpassing Hitler» and claimed the «MAGA cult may be more destructive and evil than the Nazis.»
Breitbart reported that a Facebook post by Headen that pictured her at a memorial at the Nazis’ Dachau concentration camp in Germany, where tens of thousands of people were murdered during World War II, with the words, «This is where Trump supporters belong.»
Headen denied last week to the Greensboro News and Record that she posted the concentration camp image and said she believed the image was edited to include the words over a real photo.
Her old comments grabbed new national attention earlier this week when the White House Rapid Response account that supports Trump shared them on X and charged that Democrats «ARE SICK PEOPLE!»
DEMOCRACY ’26: STAY UP TO DATE WITH THE ELECTION HUB
North Carolina Republican U.S. Senate nominee Michael Whatley posted on social media a photo of Headen and former Gov. Roy Cooper, the Democratic Senate nominee, and argued, «Roy Cooper still stands with NC Dem who called for the genocide of Republicans. This is against everything America stands for.»
«These remarks are reprehensible – Roy strongly condemns them and all forms of political violence and he believes it’s up to all of us to speak responsibly,» Cooper’s campaign emphasized in a statement.
Headen, a certified public accountant and small business owner, told WFDD, a public radio station in North Carolina, that she didn’t remember making the posts but apologized to those hurt by them. And she added that she understood the party’s decision to drop support for her.
But in an interview with The Assembly, a digital-first news operation in North Carolina, Headen defended her posts, describing them as «a few angry moments.»
«I’ve sacrificed myself just like Jesus sacrificed Himself on the cross, and Martin Luther King and Abraham Lincoln and all the people that put themselves out there to sacrifice for our country,» Headen also told The Assembly.
«If a few angry moments on social media are the end, then so be it. MAGA will keep winning if we continue with not standing up for what’s right.»
The Assembly’s reporting preceded the move by Democrats to drop support.

«Shelly Headen’s posts are unacceptable and do not reflect the values we expect of our candidates,» the North Carolina House Democratic Caucus said in a statement. The caucus added that it «condemns these comments without qualification and will not support Shelly Headen’s candidacy.»
The Guilford County Democratic Party said in a statement, «We unequivocally reject and condemn the social media posts by Shelly Headen. These statements violate everything our party represents. Effective immediately, the county Democratic Party is formally withdrawing all financial, operational and organizational support for Shelley Headen’s campaign.»
Headen earlier this week told Digital she’s received death threats in recent days but declined to give any further responses regarding her posts.
In an article published Thursday in The Rhino Times, Headen reiterated, «I’ve been getting death threats, and now all I want to do is protect myself and my family. My whole world has been collapsing.»
And she acknowledged that she took down her social media pages, saying, «I don’t have access to any of my accounts anymore.»
Republicans have spotlighted the controversy.
North Carolina House Speaker Destin Hall called Headen’s comments «Absolutely disgusting.»
And the North Carolina House Republicans wrote on X, «Democrat Shelly Headen who is «Running to Restore Human Decency» just posted that she wants an attack on US soil. It is unclear whether Shelly would prefer ISIS or China to attack the United States, but it’s clear she wants an attack.»
Meanwhile, the popular conservative X account Libs of TikTok argued that Headen «should drop out immediately. She doesn’t belong anywhere public office.»
The attention over the resurfaced comments comes a week after Headen faced a separate controversy following a move by State House Republicans to release two 2024 Guilford County Sheriff’s Office incident reports involving her and her husband, Gregory Thomas Headen.
The reports, which identify the alleged domestic offense as physical assault, list Headen as the suspect and her husband as the potential victim.
In a statement she released earlier this month, Headen said that during a stressful time in their marriage, she and her husband had «a couple of arguments that escalated.» She said that, during one argument, her husband grabbed her, causing her to fall backward and hit her head. She then called 911.
Headen, in her statement, described herself as having experienced abuse. And she argued that Republicans were using a private family matter for political gain.

Nobel Peace Prize awarded to UN jurist who accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza

Jack Keane defends Israel’s military campaign, praises Netanyahu’s UN speech
Netanyahu’s powerful address to the United Nations sparks strong support as Fox News senior strategic analyst General Jack Keane joins Brian Kilmeade to analyze the conflict. Highlighting Israel’s efforts to protect civilians, Keane rejects genocide allegations and details his recent 11-day visit to the region, including Gaza’s extensive tunnel network. The retired general condemns Hamas for using human shields during the war.

Navanethem «Navi» Pillay, an experienced jurist who chaired a United Nations commission that concluded Israel committed genocide in Gaza, won the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for «her efforts to promote peace and international law.»
In awarding this year’s Peace Prize, the Nobel Committee argued strong international judicial institutions must be able to enforce the rule of law to have any hope of mediating the growing number of wars and conflicts worldwide.
The committee also noted that political attacks against judges and international law itself are becoming more commonplace.
Pillay has had a long, storied career — both as a lawyer and as a judge — and more recently, she has definitively weighed in on the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

She chaired the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, which was created in 2021 after a flare-up in tensions between Israelis and Palestinians.
In September 2025, nearly two years after the Oct. 7 attacks, the commission concluded that Israel had committed genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, while also specifically accusing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and then-Defense Minister Yoav Gallant of inciting genocide.
«It is clear that there is an intent to destroy the Palestinians in Gaza through acts that meet the criteria set forth in the Genocide Convention,» Pillay said after the commission’s report was released.
At the time, Israel dismissed the findings as «distorted and false.»

MAMDANI DOUBLES DOWN ON ANTI-ISRAEL OCT 7 STATEMENT AFTER BACKLASH
Nitsana Darshan-Leitner, president of the Israel-based Shurat HaDin Law Center, cast doubt on the Nobel Committee’s decision to award Pillay the peace prize.
«A peace prize should honor those who build peace, not those accused of turning Israel into a defendant in a campaign of political delegitimization,» said Darshan-Leitner, whose organization has led protest campaigns in Geneva against Pillay. «What peace, exactly, has she brought? The Middle East remains engulfed in conflict, and the region is nowhere near the peace this prize supposedly celebrates.»
Pillay, 85, was born in South Africa’s Natal province to an Tamil Indian family. Her first foray into the legal profession began in 1967, when she founded her own law firm, becoming the first non-white person to do so in her province.

During her 28 years as a defense attorney in South Africa, she represented anti-apartheid activists. In 1973, she won a case securing political prisoners on Robben Island, including Nelson Mandela, the right to consult with lawyers.
Two decades later, Mandela became president and in 1995, he nominated her to the High Court of South Africa, becoming the first non-white woman to serve there.
Her tenure was short-lived because that same year, the United Nations elected her to serve on the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, a body established to adjudicate those responsible for the Rwandan genocide.
She was integral in the case against Jean-Paul Akayesu, the mayor of the Rwandan town of Taba, who was found guilty of inciting fellow Hutus to murder, rape and torture thousands of Tutsis.

That ruling set a precedent that rape constituted a crime against humanity and could amount to genocide when committed with the intent to destroy a targeted group.
«Rape had always been regarded as one of the spoils of war,» Pillay said after the verdict. «Now it is a war crime, no longer a trophy.»
In 2003, she was chosen to be a judge on the International Criminal Court (ICC), an institution frequently attacked by President Donald Trump as illegitimate.

After five years on the ICC, Pillay became the UN’s High Commissioner for Human Rights in 2008. While in that position, she condemned both Israel and Hamas for their conduct in the 2014 Gaza War, saying both sides likely violated international law.
She also condemned the United States for providing funding to Israel’s Iron Dome program when «no such protection has been provided to Gazans against the shelling.»
Pillay currently serves as an ad hoc judge on the International Court of Justice, where she is hearing a case accusing Burma of committing genocide against the Rohingya, a predominantly Muslim minority in the Southeast Asian country.

Talarico disappearance has Dem volunteers worrying and Trump asking, ‘What is going on?’

President Donald Trump and Texas Republican Senate nominee Ken Paxton are raising questions about Democratic challenger James Talarico’s whereabouts after the candidate spent nearly two weeks away from the campaign trail, as new reporting reveals concerns about his absence among members of his own volunteer network.
Talarico, who is challenging Paxton in Texas’ closely watched Senate contest, has not appeared at an in-person campaign event since late September, citing a case of the flu. The prolonged absence has prompted attacks from Republicans, including Trump, who questioned Talarico’s whereabouts during a Wednesday campaign rally in San Antonio and later on his social media platform Truth Social, calling the Texas Democrat «MISSING IN ACTION.»
«TalaFREAKo has been missing for 12 days! Now, after looking for him throughout all of Texas, and beyond, probably even weirder places than anyone would think possible, he put out a statement that he has the ‘flu.’ 12 days is a long time to rid yourself of the so-called flu bug,» Trump wrote Wednesday. «What’s going on? We need a Senator that’s a proven Champion like one that has been, without question, the Greatest Attorney General in the History of Texas, and one of the Greatest in the U.S.A.»
PAXTON VENTS OVER LACK OF CAMPAIGN CONTROL AS DC ESTABLISHMENT HE ONCE BATTLED COMES TO HIS AID
Paxton similarly questioned his opponent’s absence, asking supporters at Wednesday’s rally, «Where is James Talarico?»
«If it’s as tight as they claim it is, and he’s got a lead the way they claim that he is, and you’re a billionaire writing these big checks right now to Talarico, wouldn’t you want an ROI, like a return on your investment?» conservative radio host Ben Ferguson questioned on «The Will Cain Show» Thursday. «Why have we not gotten transparency from his campaign? What is really going on? Why did a guy disappear after doing an interview where he didn’t look like he had the flu?»
Talarico’s absence comes during the final stretch of Texas’ closely watched Senate race, with Election Day less than a month away. The Democrat’s last publicly documented in-person campaign event in Texas was Sept. 26, when he held a news conference in Carrollton addressing rising gasoline prices and the war in Iran, according to CNN.
Talarico subsequently attended a private fundraiser in New York and participated virtually in a Sept. 30 business forum, where he said he had been diagnosed with the flu at a Dallas urgent care facility the previous evening. Talarico has Type 1 diabetes, which puts him at greater risk of developing serious flu complications, according to the CDC.
His campaign has said Talarico expects to return to in-person campaigning this weekend ahead of a publicly scheduled CNN town hall on Oct. 14. The campaign also cited «more than 100 public events» Talarico has already done.
TEXAS VOTERS HAVE PLENTY TO SAY ABOUT WHETHER LONE STAR STATE COULD TURN BLUE
«I guess I’ve been shaking too many hands on the campaign trail, and so I want to keep everybody safe,» Talarico explained, adding he did not want to risk spreading the illness to vulnerable individuals.
«Ken Paxton has been ignoring Texans this entire campaign, and his priorities are clear: he doesn’t answer to the people of this state — he answers to his billionaire megadonors and special interests,» campaign spokesperson JT Ennis told Digital.
Meanwhile, the New York Post reported Thursday that leaked messages from a private Slack channel showed members of Talarico’s volunteer network discussing his prolonged absence, with one expressing concern that he could lose momentum.
«I think it’ll be fine. It’s [j]ust conservatives blasting him. I’m just worried about him losing momentum,» a Talarico campaign volunteer wrote in a group chat with other volunteers, featuring nearly 4,000 people, according to The Post. «But I 100% expect him to make a comeback at the CNN [t]own hall that’s a given.»
«It’s a buncha people that don’t actually want him to be out touring that are causing a stink. No one’s genuinely upset,» another volunteer wrote.
Digital reached out to the Talarico campaign for additional information on where the candidate is recovering and when this weekend he will reappear on the campaign trail but did not receive a response by the time of publication.
«I would much rather have my candidate rested and have any ailments out of the way now than down the stretch, because if they’re sick two weeks before the election, they’re still going to be on the road which means it’s only going to get worse. So let them heal up and get their strength back,» veteran Texas-based Democratic strategist Ed Espinoza told Digital. «Even though Talarico’s off the trail, he’s still on the airwaves,» Espinoza added, referring to the campaign’s significant ad spending in Texas. «He’s got plenty of money to get his message out.»
