Navy veteran Rocky Rochford seeks to turn Tampa Bay red, unseat 20-year House incumbent

Navy veteran Rocky Rochford served his country for 33 years, holding the title of commodore. Now, he’s on a mission to flip Tampa Bay from blue to red, in the midst of a spirited campaign to unseat 20-year incumbent Kathy Castor in Florida’s 14th congressional district.
Rochford recently sat down to discuss his campaign with Fox News Digital.
«So in 20 years, Kathy Castor has been the author of two bills that became law. And both of those were to rename post offices. So I would say that Kathy Castor has been ineffective. She hasn’t really helped Tampa Bay in the ways that matter the most. Affordability is probably the biggest thing on everyone’s kitchen table list of discussion points. Gasoline, groceries, electricity, insurance. I mean, the list goes on and on and on.»
Rochford emphasizes that his leadership experience has prepared him to be ready to represent the people of Tampa Bay from day one.

«So it’s about leadership. I have spent my entire adult life…33 years in the Navy, four years at Massachusetts Maritime Academy. I got to go back to the age of 18 for the first time before I was actually part of the military. So, it’s been entrenched in my being, it is in my soul, I’m very strong in my faith.
And I believe that we need someone who is not only going to bring leadership to the process, but is going to bring their faith to the process up in D.C., and be part of the solution. People who are anti the other side, whether it doesn’t matter what side you’re sitting on, when they are against the other side to the point where they won’t even talk to them, that’s problematic. We’re not gonna get anything accomplished, we’re not going to get anything done. And that’s exactly what’s happening up in DC right now, we see a lot of that.»
Children’s rights is an issue at the forefront of Rochford’s campaign.
«I have three major bills that are the highlight of what I’ve been working on. And the first is my children’s bill of rights. I do believe that children are the future, and they need to be protected far better than they’re being protected now. So the laws that govern children are written amongst 11 different government agencies. Those agencies don’t overlap and they don’t talk to each other. This bill is designed to create a shield, an organization that oversees all of those laws.
«This covers everything from AI for kids, online predators, and it provides new penalties with teeth. This is we’re going to get after those folks. The predators have been exploiting four different avenues on children across state lines. I’m going to close every one of those doors. Parental rights, no boys in girls sports. I mean, this bill covers adoption. It covers foster care, egg donor, IVF. It is complete.»
Rochford argues that foreign influence plays a large role in shaping electoral outcomes, and particularly singles out China-based political donor and activist Neville Roy Singham.

«There’s a lot folks who have nothing to do with the United States…that are influencing our elections, they’re influencing the people…We know that Neville Singham, who’s a U.S. citizen living in Shanghai, is taking money from the CCP to disrupt America from the inside. China calls this the smokeless war, and it really is and and they’re not the only ones.
«Iran is doing the same thing, we know North Korea is involved, Russia so there’s a lot of influence happening in here that are that are causing wreaking havoc but we as a society need to see beyond that. We are one America, and I’m America first. I’m American first before politics, America first before party.»

Florida’s 14th district is hardly politically monolithic, and Rochford emphasizes that he seeks to represent the entire district, not merely Republicans.
«I’m about listening. So I’m here to not only listen to the right, I’m here to listen to the center, and I’m here to listen the left. Because if we can’t come together and find the commonalities that will make us a better country, then we are doomed as a country. So we must support what we’re all after, which is a great America, a great society that takes care of its own and helps around the world.»

He views energy policy and independence as the foundation of affordability for American workers and families.
«So I’ve been talking about affordability for some time. To me, the foundation of affordability for just about everything runs off of energy. The price of oil drives the price of gas, which is in our trucks, in our trains, in our airplanes, in ships. And so we need to get control. And so one of the bills that I have drafted will propose that…we first have to become energy independent. We’re the largest producer of energy in the world. So our people should be benefiting from it, not hurting from it.»
Among the most important policy issues for Rochford is the national debt, which he has spent a great deal of time researching. He has a plan that would retire America’s national debt by the 2060s:
«We don’t want to leave a legacy of debt to our children and grandchildren. So I had go back 40 years to try to figure out where this all started, and where we went off the tracks. And I now understand the entire policy. Balancing the budget is only treating a symptom. It does not treat the disease. So the disease is Congress, I’m sorry, but it’s true.

«Every bit of money that comes in that’s extra from Congress goes into the general pool and they spend it. And all of the great ideas that have been used in the past, because I studied them all in the past on how to get after the national debt, balance the budget, the things that’ll help us get there. They were only policy, they were never law. So this suite of bills is law and it has teeth. And so the very first bill will design, it will create a trust and it is the American National Debt Trust. And when the money goes in there, it cannot come out and it cannot be spent by Congress in any other way. So if we enacted [my legislation] it would still take us to the 2060s to retire the national debt, but if we do nothing, and we’re on the path of doing nothing, in 10 years the national debt will be $61 trillion.»

Former Speaker of the House Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., dodged answering questions on the growing influence of the socialist movement after three candidates backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani dominated in primary elections.
Mamdani’s political clout was on display Tuesday night after all three House candidates he endorsed — Darializa Avila Chevalier, Brad Lander and Claire Valdez — won their Democratic primaries in New York, beating out more moderate Democrats.
Pelosi, a moderate Democrat herself, refused to answer Fox News Digital’s question on her reaction to these socialist candidates coming out as victorious.

The 20-term California congresswoman never formally endorsed Mamdani, but she did endorse a socialist candidate in 2024 — Dean Preston for California’s District 5 supervisor.
She also said that she will «reject socialism as an economic system» and as a full picture of the Democratic Party in an interview with CBS’ 60 Minutes back in 2019.
«If people have that view, that’s their view,» Pelosi said in the interview. «That is not the view of the Democratic Party.»
Omar, a member of the progressive Squad, also ignored questions about the New York primary results, including whether the three socialist candidates could complicate House Democrats and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries’ agendas if they’re elected to Congress.

While Omar has never formally identified as a socialist, she has supported many policies associated with socialism and has also been backed by the Democratic Socialists of America.
While Pelosi and Omar walked away without responding, Rep. Hank Johnson, D-Ga., welcomed the incoming lawmakers.
«I think Democrats in New York elected three new Democrats that will join our caucus, and I’m looking forward for them participating,» Johnson told Fox News Digital.
Asked about criticism that the three candidates have leveled against Israel, Johnson argued they oppose the Israeli government rather than Israel itself.
«They were not anti-Israel. They were anti-Israeli government,» Johnson said. «The government of Benjamin Netanyahu has done a grave disservice to the nation of Israel and to its people.»
Lander is Jewish himself and said in his victory speech, «You can criticize Israel and not be antisemitic. You can be an anti-Zionist and not be antisemitic.»

The three primary winners have all been critical of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, making the issue a defining point of the Democratic Party’s progressive wing.
Johnson then called out Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s relationship with President Donald Trump and condemned both of their involvement in starting the war with Iran.

«The people there will have an opportunity to correct the mistake that they made,» Johnson said. «The same way that the people of America have the opportunity to correct this mistake that we made in electing Donald Trump, who unfortunately got manipulated into war by Benjamin Netanyahu.»
He continued, «People don’t like this war, and they don’t like Israeli government policy that put us into this war.»

Conmoción en Beijing: se estrelló una avioneta contra el edificio más alto de la capital china
Una avioneta se estrelló este viernes en Beijing contra el China Zun, el edificio más alto de la capital china, confirmaron testigos, sin que por el momento se conozcan las causas del suceso.
El impacto se produjo en la zona de Guomao, el principal centro financiero de Beijing, en el distrito de Chaoyang y junto a otros inmuebles emblemáticos de la capital china, entre ellos la sede de la televisión estatal CCTV.
Imágenes tomadas en el lugar y que circulan por redes sociales internacionales muestran un agujero en la fachada acristalada del rascacielos, situado a una altura considerable, y fragmentos de una aeronave caídos en una calle próxima.
También circulan vídeos en los que se ven piezas caer desde gran altura junto a la torre, además de desperfectos en vehículos de la zona.
Marcos Sabio, un joven español residente en Beijing, fue testigo cercano del suceso, ya que según relató trabaja en el edificio de al lado.
«Sobre las seis de la tarde me fui al gimnasio, que está en la quinta planta del edificio, y allí escuché un ruido, vi un poco de humo y enseguida recibí un mensaje de la compañía avisando a los trabajadores de que había chocado un avión contra el edificio de enfrente», explicó.
Una vez en la calle, Sabio vio un gran despliegue policial, cortes de tráfico y a los agentes «pidiéndole a la gente que no mirara», agregó.
Otro español residente en Beijing que prefirió no ser identificado explicó que se encontró con el operativo: «Decenas de coches de policía. Muchas ambulancias y ambos sentidos de la calle cortados», señaló.
Por su parte, una mujer de apellido Lin, citada por el diario hongkonés South China Morning Post, asegura que fue evacuada de urgencia del edificio a las 18 hora local.
Por el momento, las autoridades chinas no han informado de víctimas ni han ofrecido una versión oficial sobre las circunstancias del incidente, ocurrido en una de las áreas de mayor actividad empresarial de Beijing.
Tampoco se conoce si la aeronave estaba realizando un vuelo privado, comercial o de otro tipo, ni si el impacto fue consecuencia de una avería, de una pérdida de control o de otras causas.
La base de datos Aviation Safety Network incluyó este viernes una entrada sobre el suceso en la que identifica el aparato como un Sunward SA 60L Aurora con matrícula B-12PP y registra el siniestro como un accidente, aunque advierte de que la información procede por ahora de fuentes no oficiales.
Según esa ficha, el avión tenía como aeropuerto de salida y destino el aeropuerto Beijing Shifosi, en Beijing.
Las imágenes del suceso circulaban este viernes en la red social X, bloqueada en China, mientras que búsquedas realizadas en plataformas chinas como Weibo y Douyin no arrojaban resultados recientes sobre el inusual incidente y pese a la ubicación céntrica del impacto, lo que apunta a una censura por parte de las autoridades.
El China Zun, también conocido como CITIC Tower, domina el perfil urbano del distrito financiero de Beijing y es uno de los edificios más reconocibles de la capital. La torre, de 528 metros de altura, fue inaugurada en 2018 y se convirtió entonces en el rascacielos más alto de la ciudad.
Su construcción se vio envuelta en polémica después de que el diario hongkonés Ming Pao informara de que sus plantas superiores permitían observar, en condiciones de buena visibilidad, zonas sensibles del complejo de Zhongnanhai, donde residen los líderes del Partido Comunista Chino (PCCh), algo que las autoridades no confirmaron públicamente.
Según ese medio, la supuesta visibilidad hacia Zhongnanhai habría motivado cambios en las plantas superiores antes de su entrada en servicio, aunque oficialmente esas modificaciones se vincularon a cuestiones de seguridad contra incendios en edificios de gran altura.
Tres años después de su inauguración, en 2021, China vetó la construcción de nuevos rascacielos de más de 500 metros de altura y limitó «estrictamente» los de más de 250 metros, en medio de preocupaciones por la seguridad estructural de estos bloques y por las dificultades de algunos desarrolladores inmobiliarios para atraer inquilinos.
Un misterio virológico que desconcertó a los científicos durante meses finalmente fue resuelto. Investigadores estadounidenses identificaron el mecanismo biológico que permitió a la gripe aviar H5N1 infectar a vacas lecheras de forma inusual, atacando principalmente las ubres -el órgano glandular que produce y almacena la lech- en lugar de los pulmones.
Este hallazgo no solo permitió comprender por qué el virus se manifestó de manera tan atípica en el ganado, sino que abre nuevas vías para anticipar y prevenir brotes en otras especies, con implicancias directas para la salud animal, la producción y la bioseguridad.
El brote, detectado a principios de 2024 en el Panhandle de Texas, causó confusión entre los veterinarios. Los animales desarrollaron mastitis necrotizante, una inflamación grave de las glándulas mamarias, sin presentar síntomas respiratorios.
“La mastitis es una enfermedad clásica en los animales de producción lechera, y los veterinarios buscaban diligentemente la causa entre los sospechosos habituales, como los patógenos bacterianos”, explicó Suresh Kuchipudi, catedrático de Enfermedades Infecciosas de la Facultad de Salud Pública de la Universidad de Pittsburgh.
“Cuando se descubrió que el verdadero culpable era la gripe aviar, todos los implicados en el sector quedaron completamente sorprendidos. Ni siquiera habíamos considerado que el ganado pudiera ser huésped del virus H5N1”, agregó el experto.
El grupo de Kuchipudi, junto a la investigadora Lauren E. Pepi de la Facultad de Medicina de Harvard, utilizó técnicas de glicómica para mapear los receptores celulares que permiten la entrada del virus. Descubrieron que el H5N1 se une a un subtipo específico de glicanos, los receptores de ácido siálico unidos a N, presentes en todo el tejido mamario pero prácticamente ausentes en el sistema respiratorio de las vacas.
“Esto convertía a las glándulas mamarias en un caldo de cultivo perfecto para el virus”, explicó Kuchipudi. El resultado fue una infección que no causó enfermedad respiratoria pero sí mastitis grave, alterando el paradigma sobre cómo la gripe aviar puede manifestarse en diferentes hospedadores.
La investigación, publicada en Science Advances, no solo resuelve el enigma de la gripe aviar en bovinos, sino que permite anticipar la vulnerabilidad de otras especies y tejidos.
Kuchipudi explicó que es posible analizar de manera preventiva la susceptibilidad de diversas especies y sus tejidos. “Podemos anticipar si desarrollarían síntomas respiratorios, si solo presentarían mastitis, como ocurre en las vacas, o si podrían manifestar una enfermedad neurológica, tal como identificó nuestro equipo en los gatos. Lo aprendido permitirá prepararnos mejor y evitar sorpresas en el futuro”.
El mecanismo de infección tiene implicancias directas para la industria lechera y la salud pública. Otro estudio, realizado en 2025 por investigadores de la Universidad de Cornell, analizó el impacto de un brote en un rebaño de Ohio con 3.900 vacas. El brote se originó tras la introducción de animales procedentes de Texas, y las primeras señales clínicas —pérdida de rumia y caída en la producción de leche— se detectaron cinco días antes del diagnóstico.
Aproximadamente el 20% de las vacas mostró síntomas, con una reducción de unos 900 kg de leche por vaca durante 60 días. El costo económico por animal afectado se estimó en 950 dólares, y el costo total del brote en el rebaño ascendió a US$ 737.500 por mortalidad, eliminación y pérdidas productivas.
Los investigadores advirtieron que “aunque se desconoce el mecanismo preciso de transmisión del virus HPAI H5N1 en el ganado lechero, esto coincide con las infecciones por otros virus de la influenza A, que pueden propagarse rápidamente entre poblaciones de mamíferos susceptibles, incluidos humanos, perros y cerdos”. La seroprevalencia positiva en casi el 90% de los 637 animales analizados sugiere una alta eficacia de transmisión. Además, se detectaron anticuerpos en 17 de las 42 vacas no lactantes, lo que indica que incluso los animales en fase seca pueden ser fuente de virus.
La circulación silenciosa del H5N1 en rebaños lecheros de Estados Unidos ha intensificado las inquietudes sobre la vigilancia epidemiológica y las medidas de bioseguridad.
“Cuando una vaca se infecta, libera grandes cantidades del virus en la leche”, señaló Kuchipudi. Esto ha generado alertas por el riesgo al que se exponen los trabajadores agrícolas.
Además, persiste la práctica de alimentar a mascotas, como gatos, con leche cruda, y se han reportado muertes en estos animales, según investigaciones previas del equipo. El investigador enfatiza que la pasteurización elimina el virus y advierte sobre la necesidad de evitar el consumo de leche sin tratar.
El brote de Ohio no fue un caso aislado. Datos del Servicio de Inspección de Sanidad Animal y Vegetal (APHIS) del Departamento de Agricultura de Estados Unidos confirmaron más casos en ganado lechero en Idaho y el avance del virus en otras especies. Idaho notificó tres instalaciones en cuarentena, mientras que APHIS reportó infecciones en gatos domésticos de varios estados, una foca común en Washington y ratones en Misuri. En la avicultura, se detectaron brotes en aves de corral en Iowa, Nebraska, Nueva York, Colorado e Indiana, además de mercados de aves vivas en Nueva York.
La tasa de transmisión y la capacidad del virus para saltar entre especies evidencian la importancia de la detección temprana y el monitoreo sistemático. Las vacas multíparas presentaron mayor riesgo que las primíparas, lo que sugiere una relación entre la exposición acumulada al ordeño y la enfermedad clínica. La investigación financiada por el Departamento de Salud Pública de la Universidad de Pittsburgh y el Instituto Nacional de Alimentación y Agricultura del USDA apunta a que la identificación de los receptores preferidos del virus en diferentes tejidos podría servir como herramienta predictiva para brotes futuros.
El hallazgo de los científicos estadounidenses redefine la vigilancia de la gripe aviar en la producción animal. Los expertos recomiendan analizar proactivamente la presencia y distribución de los receptores virales en especies de interés zootécnico y en animales de compañía, para anticipar brotes y evitar pérdidas económicas y riesgos sanitarios.
“Este trabajo también podría ayudar a los científicos a predecir mejor cómo se comportaría el virus H5N1 si se propaga a nuevas especies animales en el futuro”, concluyeron los autores.
El desafío ahora es trasladar el conocimiento a políticas de prevención, protocolos de bioseguridad y estrategias de comunicación que permitan contener el avance de la gripe aviar y sus consecuencias sobre la salud animal, la economía rural y la salud pública global.
