Navy veteran Rocky Rochford seeks to turn Tampa Bay red, unseat 20-year House incumbent

Navy veteran Rocky Rochford served his country for 33 years, holding the title of commodore. Now, he’s on a mission to flip Tampa Bay from blue to red, in the midst of a spirited campaign to unseat 20-year incumbent Kathy Castor in Florida’s 14th congressional district.
Rochford recently sat down to discuss his campaign with Fox News Digital.
«So in 20 years, Kathy Castor has been the author of two bills that became law. And both of those were to rename post offices. So I would say that Kathy Castor has been ineffective. She hasn’t really helped Tampa Bay in the ways that matter the most. Affordability is probably the biggest thing on everyone’s kitchen table list of discussion points. Gasoline, groceries, electricity, insurance. I mean, the list goes on and on and on.»
Rochford emphasizes that his leadership experience has prepared him to be ready to represent the people of Tampa Bay from day one.

«So it’s about leadership. I have spent my entire adult life…33 years in the Navy, four years at Massachusetts Maritime Academy. I got to go back to the age of 18 for the first time before I was actually part of the military. So, it’s been entrenched in my being, it is in my soul, I’m very strong in my faith.
And I believe that we need someone who is not only going to bring leadership to the process, but is going to bring their faith to the process up in D.C., and be part of the solution. People who are anti the other side, whether it doesn’t matter what side you’re sitting on, when they are against the other side to the point where they won’t even talk to them, that’s problematic. We’re not gonna get anything accomplished, we’re not going to get anything done. And that’s exactly what’s happening up in DC right now, we see a lot of that.»
Children’s rights is an issue at the forefront of Rochford’s campaign.
«I have three major bills that are the highlight of what I’ve been working on. And the first is my children’s bill of rights. I do believe that children are the future, and they need to be protected far better than they’re being protected now. So the laws that govern children are written amongst 11 different government agencies. Those agencies don’t overlap and they don’t talk to each other. This bill is designed to create a shield, an organization that oversees all of those laws.
«This covers everything from AI for kids, online predators, and it provides new penalties with teeth. This is we’re going to get after those folks. The predators have been exploiting four different avenues on children across state lines. I’m going to close every one of those doors. Parental rights, no boys in girls sports. I mean, this bill covers adoption. It covers foster care, egg donor, IVF. It is complete.»
Rochford argues that foreign influence plays a large role in shaping electoral outcomes, and particularly singles out China-based political donor and activist Neville Roy Singham.

«There’s a lot folks who have nothing to do with the United States…that are influencing our elections, they’re influencing the people…We know that Neville Singham, who’s a U.S. citizen living in Shanghai, is taking money from the CCP to disrupt America from the inside. China calls this the smokeless war, and it really is and and they’re not the only ones.
«Iran is doing the same thing, we know North Korea is involved, Russia so there’s a lot of influence happening in here that are that are causing wreaking havoc but we as a society need to see beyond that. We are one America, and I’m America first. I’m American first before politics, America first before party.»

Florida’s 14th district is hardly politically monolithic, and Rochford emphasizes that he seeks to represent the entire district, not merely Republicans.
«I’m about listening. So I’m here to not only listen to the right, I’m here to listen to the center, and I’m here to listen the left. Because if we can’t come together and find the commonalities that will make us a better country, then we are doomed as a country. So we must support what we’re all after, which is a great America, a great society that takes care of its own and helps around the world.»

He views energy policy and independence as the foundation of affordability for American workers and families.
«So I’ve been talking about affordability for some time. To me, the foundation of affordability for just about everything runs off of energy. The price of oil drives the price of gas, which is in our trucks, in our trains, in our airplanes, in ships. And so we need to get control. And so one of the bills that I have drafted will propose that…we first have to become energy independent. We’re the largest producer of energy in the world. So our people should be benefiting from it, not hurting from it.»
Among the most important policy issues for Rochford is the national debt, which he has spent a great deal of time researching. He has a plan that would retire America’s national debt by the 2060s:
«We don’t want to leave a legacy of debt to our children and grandchildren. So I had go back 40 years to try to figure out where this all started, and where we went off the tracks. And I now understand the entire policy. Balancing the budget is only treating a symptom. It does not treat the disease. So the disease is Congress, I’m sorry, but it’s true.

«Every bit of money that comes in that’s extra from Congress goes into the general pool and they spend it. And all of the great ideas that have been used in the past, because I studied them all in the past on how to get after the national debt, balance the budget, the things that’ll help us get there. They were only policy, they were never law. So this suite of bills is law and it has teeth. And so the very first bill will design, it will create a trust and it is the American National Debt Trust. And when the money goes in there, it cannot come out and it cannot be spent by Congress in any other way. So if we enacted [my legislation] it would still take us to the 2060s to retire the national debt, but if we do nothing, and we’re on the path of doing nothing, in 10 years the national debt will be $61 trillion.»

Senate Republicans managed to stitch together a unified front to advance President Donald Trump’s roughly $70 billion immigration enforcement package, but divisions over the president’s agenda were laid bare after a marathon day of votes.
Passage of the budget reconciliation package geared toward funding Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol for the next three and a half years closes a long, drawn out chapter in the Senate that began during the longest shutdown in history.
It’s a point that Senate Republicans tried to return to throughout the day, reiterating that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and Democrats had forced their hands after refusing to fund immigration operations without a plethora of reforms.

«Democrats would not agree to anything, and eventually they walked away altogether, presumably because they thought that it would serve them better to have an issue for November,» Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., said.
But the day, and preceding weeks, were dominated by a growing rift between Senate Republicans and the Trump administration that threatened to blow up the process altogether.
First, it was the inclusion of $1 billion in funding for security upgrades to Trump’s ballroom, which was later stripped out.
Then, it was the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) announcement that a nearly $2 billion «anti-weaponization» fund was being launched to allow people who felt targeted by the government to make a claim from the pot of taxpayer money.

Several Senate Republicans worried that the money could be accessed by Jan. 6, 2021, rioters who were convicted of assaulting police.
Schumer and Democrats leaned into that open wound and spent much of the marathon, «vote-a-rama» vote series trying to spell a permanent end to the fund, despite acting Attorney General Todd Blanche vowing that the administration would no longer pursue it.
«Do we believe that Donald Trump, who has lied to us day in and day out, do we believe that he will be able to resist getting his sticky fingers in the slush fund when it would benefit himself and his family? No way, no way,» Schumer said.

Many of the amendments pushed by Democrats placed Republicans in tough bids for reelection, Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine, Jon Husted, R-Ohio, and Dan Sullivan, R-Alaska, into politically challenging positions.
Republicans tried to kill it, too, causing tensions on the Senate floor to rise.
«It’s not that tense,» Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., said. «I mean, I’ve seen worse. Nobody’s stabbed anybody yet.»
Still, the process nearly came to a grinding halt because of the fund at the start of the marathon vote series when Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., and others wanted to ensure that GOP attempts to end the fund would get a vote, too.
«I just wanted to optimize the chances of success,» Cassidy said of the delay.

Ultimately, despite a dozen Republicans voting for Sen. Thom Tillis’, R-N.C., amendment, and X voting for Cassidy’s, all attempts to thwart future bids to revive the fund failed.
The ballroom also came back into the picture when six Republicans joined Senate Democrats to prevent construction on the colossal structure from going forward without congressional approval.
Then there was an attempt by Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., to attach the SAVE America Act to the reconciliation package, which met Republican resistance and ultimately failed, too.
The package now heads to the House, where Republicans are expected to pass it by the end of the week.

Una llamada, una desaparición y un crimen que conmocionó a México: el femicidio de María Fernanda Contreras
En la noche del 3 de abril de 2022, María Fernanda Contreras Ruiz llamó a su familia para avisar que estaba volviendo a su casa. Tenía 27 años, vivía en Nuevo León y había pasado el día con amigos antes de dirigirse al municipio de Apodaca. Esa fue la última vez que sus seres queridos tuvieron noticias de ella.
Su desaparición activó una búsqueda que se extendió durante varios días y que rápidamente captó la atención de todo México. En un contexto donde crecían las denuncias de mujeres desaparecidas en Nuevo León, el caso generó una fuerte conmoción social.
Finalmente, las autoridades encontraron su cuerpo en una casa de Apodaca y la investigación reveló que había sido asesinada por una persona a la que conocía y en quien confiaba.
La desaparición
María Fernanda Contreras Ruiz era egresada del Instituto Tecnológico de Monterrey y trabajaba en una empresa de logística del sector privado. Sus seres queridos le decían “Marifer” de cariño y todos la destacaban por su bondad y calidez.
El domingo 3 de abril de 2022 pasó parte del día con un grupo de amigos en Monterrey. Según reconstruyeron posteriormente las autoridades y su familia, durante la jornada se dirigió hasta Apodaca para acompañar a un conocido que supuestamente estaba interesado en comprar un auto.

Su padre, Luis Carlos Contreras, confirmó más tarde que la joven efectivamente fue a ese encuentro. Durante la noche, entre las 20 y las 21 horas, María Fernanda se comunicó con su mamá para avisarle que pronto volvería a casa. Pese a ello, fue el último contacto que tuvo con ella.
Al día siguiente, al advertir que no había llegado y que nadie podía comunicarse con ella, la familia denunció su desaparición. La Fiscalía General de Justicia de Nuevo León emitió una ficha de búsqueda y comenzó un operativo para intentar localizarla.
El caso generó una gran movilización social. En aquellos meses, Nuevo León atravesaba una fuerte preocupación por la desaparición de mujeres jóvenes, una situación que había alcanzado notoriedad nacional luego de otros 15 casos ocurridos en la región.
Las primeras pistas
En primer lugar, los investigadores comenzaron a rastrear los movimientos de María Fernanda durante sus últimas horas. Una de las primeras novedades surgió el 6 de abril, cuando fue encontrado su vehículo, un Mazda 3 blanco modelo 2017.
El auto apareció estacionado en una calle cercana al Palacio de Justicia de Nuevo León, en Apodaca. Este hallazgo hizo crecer la esperanza de encontrarla con vida, pero también reforzó la hipótesis de que había sido víctima de un delito.
Mientras avanzaban las tareas de búsqueda, los especialistas analizaron datos de telefonía celular y geolocalización. El GPS del teléfono de la joven permitió identificar zonas de interés para la investigación y orientó una serie de allanamientos en distintos domicilios del municipio.
Las autoridades inspeccionaron varias propiedades relacionadas con las últimas ubicaciones registradas por el celular. Cada procedimiento aumentaba la expectativa de familiares y voluntarios que seguían de cerca el operativo.
El hallazgo del cuerpo
La búsqueda llegó a un desenlace trágico el 7 de abril. En uno de los allanamientos realizados en una casa de la colonia Ex Hacienda Santa Rosa, en Apodaca, los investigadores encontraron el cuerpo de una mujer.

La noticia provocó una profunda conmoción en Nuevo León y en todo México. Durante días, miles de personas habían compartido su foto en redes sociales y participado en campañas para localizarla.
La fiscalía informó que la causa de muerte había sido una contusión profunda de cráneo. El dato revelaba que la joven había sufrido una agresión extremadamente violenta.
Tras comunicar oficialmente el resultado de las pruebas a la familia, las autoridades confirmaron públicamente la identidad de la víctima. El hallazgo transformó la investigación por desaparición en una causa por femicidio.
La investigación
A medida que los investigadores reconstruían las últimas horas de María Fernanda, las sospechas comenzaron a concentrarse sobre una persona que formaba parte de su círculo de confianza.
La Fiscalía Especializada en Feminicidios y Delitos Cometidos Contra las Mujeres reunió una importante cantidad de pruebas para sostener la acusación. Se incorporaron registros fotográficos, videos, análisis de telefonía celular y distintos elementos obtenidos durante los allanamientos realizados en Apodaca.
La evidencia permitió establecer que el 3 de abril de 2022 María Fernanda había llegado a una casa de la colonia Ex Hacienda Santa Rosa acompañada por Raúl Alfredo “N”, un excompañero de trabajo en quien confiaba. De acuerdo con la investigación, la joven accedió a acompañarlo porque mantenían una relación de amistad previa. Esa confianza fue un elemento central para comprender cómo terminó en el lugar donde ocurrió el crimen.
El expediente estableció que existía una disputa económica entre ambos, ya que María Fernanda le había prestado dinero y le reclamaba la devolución de la deuda. Los investigadores concluyeron que, ante la presión para pagar lo adeudado, el hombre la atacó violentamente.
La agresión habría consistido en múltiples golpes que terminaron provocándole una contusión profunda de cráneo, lesión que causó su muerte.
El impacto social
El asesinato de María Fernanda ocurrió en un contexto particularmente sensible para la sociedad mexicana.
Durante esas semanas, los casos de mujeres desaparecidas en Nuevo León ocupaban diariamente los titulares de los medios. La desaparición y muerte de María Fernanda coincidió temporalmente con otros episodios que despertaron una enorme preocupación pública, entre ellos los casos de Yolanda Martínez Cadena y Debanhi Escobar.

La acumulación de denuncias provocó protestas, reclamos de organizaciones feministas y cuestionamientos sobre la seguridad de las mujeres en el estado.
Datos oficiales de la época mostraban que, solo en los primeros meses de 2022, cientos de mujeres habían sido reportadas como desaparecidas en Nuevo León. Si bien muchas fueron localizadas con vida, varios casos permanecían sin resolver y otros terminaron de manera trágica.
En ese escenario, la familia de María Fernanda impulsó campañas permanentes para exigir justicia y evitar que el crimen quedara impune.
La condena
Después de meses de investigación y del proceso judicial correspondiente, la causa llegó a juicio.
El Ministerio Público presentó el amplio conjunto de pruebas reunidas por la Fiscalía Especializada en Feminicidios, incluyendo declaraciones testimoniales, peritajes científicos, evidencia tecnológica y material audiovisual. Finalmente, en septiembre de 2023, la Justicia de Nuevo León declaró culpable a Raúl Alfredo “N” por el asesinato de María Fernanda Contreras Ruiz. El tribunal le impuso una condena de 56 años y tres meses de prisión.
Para la familia de María Fernanda, el fallo representó el cierre de una larga búsqueda de justicia iniciada desde el momento en que dejaron de tener noticias de ella. Sin embargo, el caso continúa siendo recordado como uno de los crímenes más impactantes ocurridos en Nuevo León en los últimos años.

Rusia lanzó un nuevo ataque con misiles y más de 200 drones contra varias regiones de Ucrania: al menos cuatro muertos
Al menos cuatro personas murieron en Ucrania tras una nueva serie de ataques de Rusia en distintas regiones tras los informes de las autoridades locales. Las recientes hostilidades de Moscú, desde la noche del jueves hasta la madrugada del viernes, surgen tras la ofensiva de Kiev contra la terminal petrolera de San Petesburgo, ciudad natal del presidente ruso Vladimir Putin.
En la ciudad de Kherson, ubicada en el sur del país, un hombre de 75 años falleció tras un bombardeo con drones durante la noche del jueves, informó Yaroslav Shanko, jefe de la administración militar local. Mientras tanto, en Zaporizhzhia, una mujer murió y otras 16 personas resultaron heridas en un ataque similar, de acuerdo con los servicios de emergencia citados por Reuters.
En el distrito de Pavlograd, en la región de Dnipro, otra mujer murió como consecuencia de ataques combinados de drones y artillería, señaló el gobernador regional Oleksandr Ganzha en un mensaje publicado en Telegram. El ataque dejó además varios daños materiales, según detalló la autoridad.
Rusia también atacó la región de Odesa con vehículos aéreos no tripulados durante la madrugada. Varias viviendas e infraestructura crítica resultaron afectadas y, como consecuencia de los ataques, se produjeron incendios que los bomberos extinguieron rápidamente. Psicólogos del Servicio Estatal de Emergencias trabajaron en el lugar, brindando apoyo a los residentes afectados por el bombardeo.
Según el servicio de emergencias de la región, una persona resultó herida. Las labores de rescate, en las cuales se vieron involucrados 56 rescatistas y 13 unidades de equipo, fueron dificultadas por las repetidas alarmas aéreas.
La Fuerza Aérea de Ucrania reportó que durante la noche del 4 al 5 de junio, las defensas aéreas lograron derribar o neutralizar 198 drones enemigos de los modelos Shahed, Gerbera, Italmas, así como otros tipos de vehículos aéreos no tripulados, en las regiones norte, sur y este del país. El ataque incluyó el lanzamiento de dos misiles aéreos guiados J-59/69 desde la región ocupada de Zaporizhzhia y el despliegue de 216 drones kamikaze y modelos de imitación desde varias direcciones, entre ellas Orel, Kursk, Briansk, Primorsko-Ajtarsk en Rusia y Chaudá en Crimea ocupada.
Las operaciones de defensa involucraron aviación, unidades antiaéreas, sistemas de guerra electrónica y equipos móviles de las Fuerzas de Defensa de Ucrania. Según el informe, hasta las 07:30 de este viernes se registraron impactos de 16 drones en 13 ubicaciones, además de la caída de restos de aparatos derribados en 12 lugares. Las autoridades indicaron que los misiles aéreos guiados no alcanzaron sus objetivos. El parte oficial advirtió que la ofensiva continuaba con drones enemigos todavía presentes en el espacio aéreo e instó a la población a respetar las normas de seguridad.
Vladimir Putin aseguró el jueves que su país está dispuesto a alcanzar un acuerdo pacífico para poner fin a la guerra contra Ucrania. Según la oficina del mandatario, declaró: “Sin duda, estamos listos y dispuestos a llegar a un acuerdo con Ucrania por medios pacíficos, basándonos en lo que discutimos en la reunión con el presidente (Donald) Trump en Anchorage. En esa reunión, se plantearon ciertas cuestiones a Rusia para que pudiéramos acordar ciertas concesiones”.
Sin embargo, Moscú solicitó a Estados Unidos, país mediador entre las partes, que presionara a Ucrania para retirarse del Donbás, territorio que abarca las regiones de Lugansk y Donetsk, una acción que Kiev reiteradamente descarta realizar durante las conversaciones para poner fin a la invasión.
A pesar de la falta de avances significativos en las conversaciones de paz, el mandatario ruso cambió su postura firme hacia el diálogo en paralelo al aumento de los ataques ucranianos contra infraestructuras militares y energéticas rusas en los últimos meses. El 9 de mayo, durante una conferencia de prensa en el Kremlin tras las celebraciones del Día de la Victoria, Putin afirmó: “Creo que la guerra (en Ucrania) está llegando a su fin”.
