Platner ally Troy Jackson locks down delegates as top rivals for Democratic Senate nomination drop out

Former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson appears to have locked up enough delegates to win the abbreviated race to replace now ex-candidate Graham Platner as the Democratic Senate nominee in the high-stakes showdown to face off with longtime Republican Sen. Susan Collins.
Delegates aligned with Jackson won the vast majority of the 500 slots that were up for grabs on Saturday and Sunday as Maine’s 16 counties held two days of delegate selection for next weekend’s nominating convention. And Jackson’s top two rivals for the nomination, Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows and Nirav Shah, a former top public health official, dropped out of the race on Sunday.
«In November, Mainers will defeat Susan Collins, and we will take back our Senate seat from the billionaires and corporations who think they own it,» Jackson said in a social media post Sunday evening.
While the delegates on Jackson’s slate are not required to support him at next weekend convention, he is in an extremely strong position to secure the nomination and face off in the midterm elections against Collins in what’s expected to be a combative and expensive ballot box battle that’s among a dozen nationwide which will determine if the Democrats can win back the Senate majority. The GOP currently holds the chamber 53-47.

A fifth-generation logger and a one-time conservative Republican who became a Democrat over two decades ago, Jackson came in third place last month in Maine’s Democratic gubernatorial primary.
On Saturday, in the race to replace Platner, Jackson-aligned delegates won more than 90% of the slots, including all 149 in Cumberland County, Maine’s most populous county and home to the state’s largest city, Portland.
«Yesterday was an unbelievable huge step, but our work is not finished — not even close,» Jackson said Sunday morning. And the winning streak of Jackson-aligned delegates continued throughout the day.
Over 450 of the 500 delegates elected this weekend were on Jackson’s slate. The delegates chosen will join another 101 coming automatically from the Democratic State Committee. All 601 will officially vote for the Senate nominee at next Saturday’s convention in Bangor, Maine.
Bellows, who unsuccessfully ran for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, exited the Senate sprint on Sunday morning.
«Donald Trump’s attacks on our democracy are only accelerating, and the best way that I can serve our state and country at this moment is by focusing exclusively on my role as Secretary of State,» Bellows said in a statement that didn’t mention Jackson.

Shah, a former director the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention from 2019 to 2023 who later served as principal deputy director of the federal CDC during then-President Joe Biden’s administration, and who came in second in last month’s Democratic gubernatorial primary, dropped out Sunday evening and backed Jackson.
«To Maine Democrats: Susan Collins will not be defeated without a united Democratic Party. And we cannot unite without treating one another with respect,» Shah wrote in a statement. «No matter whom you supported in this race, I urge us all to remember that in the weeks ahead.»
Jackson, in a social media post, thanked Shah and urged, «Now it’s time for all of us to come together, build the broadest possible coalition, and defeat Susan Collins. Let’s get to work.»
Jordan Wood, a former congressional staffer for then-Rep. Katie Porter of California who unsuccessfully ran for the Senate as well as the Democratic nomination in the state’s 2nd Congressional District this cycle, also dropped out on Sunday. Another Senate candidate, Maine Beer Company co-founder Dan Kleban, announced a campaign suspension on Sunday as well..

Along with Platner, Jackson had the support of progressive champion Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont as he ran for governor, and he is currently backed by ‘Our Revolution,’ the group born in 2016 out of Sanders’ first presidential campaign.
Jackson, similar to Platner, is running on a progressive and populist platform aimed at working-class voters. He backs raising taxes on billionaires, the universal healthcare system known as «Medicare-for-all,» abolishing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and he opposes military aid to Israel at a time that Democrats are increasingly divided on support for America’s longtime Middle East ally.
Platner, a combat veteran and oyster farmer who was backed by Sanders soon after he launched his bid last August, saw his campaign quickly catch fire. Two-term Democratic Gov. Janet Mills, who was heavily recruited by longtime Democratic Senate leader Sen. Chuck Schumer to run for the Senate, suspended her campaign this spring after trailing Platner in fundraising and in the polls.

But even as Platner steamrolled the Democratic establishment and crushed the competition last month to capture the nomination, he had already been forced on defense in the wake of a slew of scandals.
Platner dropped out earlier this month, amid calls from top Democrats in Maine and across the country to immediately exit the race following an explosive report containing an allegation of rape from a woman he previously dated. Platner denied the report but stepped aside.
While Jackson was among those who quickly called on Platner to end his bid in the wake of the rape allegation, he had previously campaigned alongside Platner and made the case that he was the best candidate to continue the fight for the progressive and populist agenda.

«This movement has always been bigger than one person. It’s about taking on a system rigged against working people, fighting for ‘Medicare-for-all,’ strong unions, higher wages, reproductive freedom, and an economy where billionaires and corporations finally pay their fair share,» Jackson said last week during a Our Revolution virtual town hall, as he pointed to Platner supporters.

At last week’s first debate among the replacement candidates, Jackson pointed to Platner and said, «That’s the thing that I think Graham did the best: talked about fighting against the health care industry and the prescription drug industry to make sure that people in this state and this country have affordable, quality health care.»

Tate brothers to remain behind bars for now as UK seeks extradition on rape, trafficking charges

Social media influencers Andrew and Tristan Tate will remain behind bars for now after appearing in federal court in Miami Monday, where they formally began fighting the United Kingdom’s bid to extradite the controversial brothers on dozens of charges, including rape and human trafficking.
During the brief hearing, U.S. Magistrate Judge Lauren Louis informed the brothers they were being held on a provisional arrest warrant from the U.K. and that extradition proceedings were already underway.
The judge later scheduled a status hearing for July 27 as the brothers prepare to challenge both the extradition request and whether they should remain in custody while the case moves forward.
Attorney Joseph McBride told reporters that the brothers are innocent and said he does not expect them to be released.

«There will be a series of hearings,» McBride said of the extradition process.
Andrew and Tristan Tate appeared wearing gray jail uniforms and shackles and each responded, «Yes, your honor,» when Judge Louis advised them of their rights.
The judge also explained that the proceeding was an extradition matter, not a criminal trial, and that the brothers would not be required to attend every hearing.
The brothers were arrested in Miami over the weekend after British authorities announced 38 additional charges involving four additional alleged victims.
Andrew Tate, 39, faces seven additional rape counts, as well as charges related to sex trafficking and indecent images of a child. Tristan Tate, 38, faces charges including two rape counts and three counts of arranging or facilitating trafficking for sexual exploitation.
British police said the new allegations bring the total number of charges against the brothers to 59. The alleged offenses are said to have occurred between July 2010 and August 2017.
«We have decided to prosecute Andrew and Tristan Tate for further offenses including rape, arranging or facilitating trafficking for sexual exploitation and offences relating to indecent images of a child,» Malcolm McHaffie, head of the Crown Prosecution Service’s Special Crime Division, said.

The Tate brothers, who hold dual U.S. and British citizenship, have denied wrongdoing.
They also face separate criminal proceedings in Romania, where authorities have been investigating them since December 2022.

The brothers have built a large online following promoting their views on masculinity and wealth, while Andrew Tate has previously described himself as a misogynist.
Andrew Tate is additionally due to face a civil trial in Britain brought by four women who accuse him of physical and sexual abuse.
The four claimants, who have been granted anonymity, allege Tate subjected them to physical or sexual violence between 2013 and 2015. Two say they were in an intimate relationship with Tate, while two worked for his online webcam business.

Andrew Tate denies those allegations. In his written defense, his lawyers said the claims are false and that all sexual activity was consensual.

La Comisión Europea puede tener dudas en cómo comportarse cuando tiene conflictos con Estados Unidos o con China, pero la práctica de los últimos años muestra que cuando se trata de asuntos cuya competencia es comunitaria y no compartido con los Estados miembros no le tiembla el pulso.
El brazo ejecutivo de la Unión Europea anunció este lunes a primera hora que impone a la empresa china AliExpress una multa de 550 millones de euros por violaron el Acta de Servicios Digitales, la norma aprobada en 2024 que está torciendo el brazo a las grandes plataformas tecnológicas.
La Comisión asegura que AliExpress no ha sido lo suficientemente diligente y no ha mitigado los riesgos de que en su plataforma se vendan productos ilegales, inseguros y truchos, que terminan llegando al mercado europeo. La multa impuesta crecerá si la empresa no toma las medidas necesarias para evitar que ese comportamiento ilegal se siga produciendo.
El documento que explica la multa asegura que AliExpress incumple sus obligaciones con respecto al Acta de Servicios Digitales “de múltiples formas”.
– La empresa no ha evaluado si tiene personal suficiente para revisar que no se vendan en su plataforma productos potencialmente ilegales
– Ha sobrestimado la efectividad de su sistema de detección y borrado de productos ilegales de su plataforma.
– No ha hecho una evaluación realista que tenga en cuenta la desproporción entre el número de empleados humanos que revisen los productos a la venta y su carga de trabajo.
– AliExpress no ha hecho lo necesario para evitar que los sistemas de publicidad aumente la diseminación de productos ilegales. Las pruebas hechas por los propios servicios de la Comisión Europea muestran que la publicidad recomendó comprar artículos que eran ilegales.
– La empresa no tiene mecanismos apropiados para medir correctamente cómo funciona su sistema de revisión de productos a la venta para que no se vendan artículos ilegales.
La comisaria europea de Soberanía Tecnológica, Seguridad y Democracia, la finlandesa Henna Virkkunen, dijo este lunes que “la diseminación de ropa trucha, juguetes inseguros y cosméticos peligrosos, además de otros productos ilegales y dañinos, no es un costo imposible de impedir en el comercio online, es un fallo de AliExpress a la hora de cumplir con sus obligaciones. El tamaño no es una excusa y los riesgos deben ser identificados y combatidos sistemáticamente”.
El pliego de acusación que da pie a esta multa señala también que la empresa no tomó medidas efectivas para reducir el riesgo de diseminación de productos ilegales. La Comisión detectó, por ejemplo, que el sistema informático de detección de productos ilegales no funciona correctamente porque productos señalados como truchos o incluso juguetes señalados como peligrosos siguieron estando a la venta durante semanas antes de ser retirados.
AliExpress tiene oficialmente un sistema por el que penaliza a quien intente vender en su plataforma productos ilegales, pero Bruselas considera que no aplica adecuadamente esas penalizaciones.
Los servicios de la Comisión Europea aseguran que los controles automáticos son muy fáciles de evitar simplemente categorizando de forma incorrecta los productos. Quien quiere vender una remera trucha de la selección Argentina puede tranquilamente explicar que vende una “remera Alilas de Argentino” y ahí seguirá durante semanas o meses en la plataforma sin que el sistema la detecte. Otra solución es poner el artículo como si fuera de otra categoría diferente y no como ropa deportiva. La empresa tampoco tiene suficiente personal que revise que eso no sucede y se fía de sus sistemas automáticos.
Bruselas pone el foco especialmente en esos productos truchos: “Además de las potenciales consecuencias para los derechos de los consumidores, los vendedores de tales productos abusan de los negocios legítimos que invierten en diseño, en pruebas de seguridad, en innovación, y los obliga a competir con productos que se aprovechan de esas inversiones. El sistema de “autorización de marcas” de la empresa, que debe impedir que se vendan productos trucos, “es inefectivo y no tiene suficiente personal”, dice Bruselas.
La Comisión Europea explica que la multa impuesta se calculó teniendo en cuenta la naturaleza de las violaciones legales, la cantidad de usuarios europeos afectados y la duración de esas violaciones. La Comisión advirtió ya a AliExpress en junio de 2025.
La multa no es mayor porque la Comisión entiende que el Acta de Servicios Digitales es una norma nueva (2024).
La empresa tiene hasta el 20 de octubre de este año para enviar a Bruselas un plan con las medidas que va a tomar para eliminar o reducir los riesgos señalados y cumplir con la normativa europea. Si no cumple se le impondrán multas periódicas.

Sen. Darline Graham, R-S.C., wants to make her role as caretaker for her brother’s seat in the Senate permanent.
Graham, who was appointed to finish off the remainder of her late brother, Sen. Lindsey Graham’s term, is officially entering the special election to claim the Republican nomination in South Carolina after a push from President Donald Trump.
Graham, during an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, acknowledged the «tremendous amount of pressure» to take over the position and run.

«I feel like I can do it, I feel an inner peace about it,» Graham said. «Will it be difficult? Yes.»
When asked if she had made a decision on what she would do, she told Hannity she had.
«I’m in,» Graham said.
Her addition to the growing roster of hopefuls to replace the late lawmaker will likely shake up the race less than one day before candidates can begin officially filing to run for the nomination.
So far, Reps. Ralph Norman, R-S.C., Russell Fry, R-S.C., and businessman Mark Lynch have all publicly committed to running. Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., has strongly suggested that she’ll throw her hat into the arena, too.
Meanwhile, Mace and Norman are turning their steel against their colleague, Fry, in what’s shaping up to be a messy, Palmetto State brawl to capture the Republican nomination for Graham’s seat.
Mace argued that should Fry win the nomination, and subsequently the general election, he would vacate his «Republican House seat until next May.»

«That narrows an already razor-thin majority and puts the Speaker’s gavel in play,» Mace said. «I will never hand Hakeem Jeffries that gift.»
«If you’re running for two offices at once, you’ve already told us who you are,» she continued. «That’s not about politics anymore — that’s about power. You’re either with the people you serve or you’re not.»
Fry announced Monday morning that he would enter the race, hours after Norman tossed in his hat, too. Mace has been making public overtures that she wants to jump in, but has so far not made anything official.
A source in Fry’s political orbit told Fox News Digital that the lawmaker has «accomplished more than all the potential candidates combined,» having passed three bills in his first four years in Congress.
«This is really about giving voters a choice and not a coronation,» they said.

Still, the conservative duo are going for blood against Fry, arguing that his bid for the seat is purely politically motivated and jeopardizes the House’s already slim majority heading into the midterm elections later this year.
Under South Carolina law, Fry can appear for multiple offices on the ballot. He was unopposed for his primary election for South Carolina’s 7th congressional district, and if he wins the nomination, he’ll be on the ballot twice for both.
Ultimately he’ll have to choose if he wins both, which would trigger another special election to fill his place.
The top two Republicans in the South Carolina Statehouse, South Carolina Senate President Thomas Alexander and South Carolina House Speaker Murrell Smith, said in a statement that the upcoming special election has «highlighted issues in South Carolina law,» and noted that, «In the coming weeks, we intend to address these important issues so that we can provide the process available for our citizens.»

That is not a problem for either Mace nor Norman, who both ran and failed to clinch the Republican gubernatorial nomination last month.
«SC Republicans voters soundly rejected Nancy and Ralph as recently as last month because conservatives are tired of career politicians who care more about their own social media than getting actual results for families,» a spokesperson for Fry’s campaign told Fox News Digital.
Norman was less venomous in his take on the situation, and noted on X that he respected Fry and had enjoyed his time serving with him in the House. Still, his candidacy, he argued, «could leave his seat vacant until May 18th.»
«This would leave his constituents unrepresented, jeopardize President Trump’s agenda, and put the House at risk of being led by a Speaker Hakeem Jeffries,» Norman said. «We can’t let that happen!!»
