Social media erupts after Mamdani’s far-left supporters turn on him over homeless shelter: ‘Oops’

East Village residents who voted for New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani by a 40-point margin are now suing to stop a building in their neighborhood from becoming a temporary homeless shelter.

The lawsuit, filed with the New York City Supreme Court on Monday, shows hesitation even among Mamdani supporters about the cost of implementing some of his plans.

News of the lawsuit has prompted conservative mockery online, with figures like Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, noting the irony of Mamdani’s supporters turning on the fruits of his administration.

«Oops,» Sen. Ted Cruz said in a post to X.

«No one is more ‘not in my backyard’ than white progressives. This community voted for Mamdani in a landslide but don’t want to live with the consequences,» Michael Henry, a former New York attorney general candidate, wrote on social media.

«Not shocked,» Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., said in a post of his own.

Election District 45, the area that includes East Village, voted for Mamdani in a 70.1% victory over independent candidate Andrew Cuomo, who garnered just 26.0% of the vote.

Even so, 10 residents joined the Village Organization for the Integrity of Community Engagement (VOICE) in their suit against the city after Mamdani announced plans earlier this year to turn a building at 8 East 3rd Street into a citywide intake shelter to house homeless adult men.

The filing argues the city fast-tracked the process without proper environmental and legal safeguards.

«It challenges the city’s hastily made and legally invalid decision to locate a new citywide homeless adult male intake center at 8 East 3rd Street without following any of the legal requirements that must precede such a significant and consequential decision,» the filing reads.

To circumvent them, the complaint notes that Mamdani relied on an emergency declaration from 2022 — a power originally issued to handle an influx of asylum-seekers.

Mamdani announced the temporary housing project at 8 East 3rd Street as a way to accommodate the closure of Bellevue Shelter, a separate homeless intake site that the mayor’s office said had deteriorated too far for use.

«The Department of Social Services (DSS) and Department of Homeless Services (DHS) will immediately implement an operational plan to vacate 30th Street and relocate the critical functions to other sites. There are approximately 250 individuals in the shelter and the DSS is working to relocate these individuals by mid-March,» Mamdani’s office said in a press release.

SEE IT: Massive NYC homeless encampment fuels backlash against Mamdani

A sprawling homeless encampment stretching roughly 12 blocks along Manhattan’s West Side is alarming people who live, work and visit nearby, with several telling Fox News Digital that the city is not doing enough to address the tents, trash and reported illegal activity.

«I think it’s embarrassing,» said Joan G., a woman who did not want to reveal her last name told Fox News Digital near the encampment.

A nearby construction-site security guard who identified himself only as «Joe the Dog Man» also criticized the city’s response. «I just don’t think enough is being done,» he said.

Mamdani initially paused encampment sweeps after taking office, fulfilling an early campaign promise, but later introduced a revised removal policy that gives homeless-services teams seven days to conduct outreach before an encampment can be dismantled.

«They gotta clean them up, they gotta keep on top of them,» Joe said. «This seven-day stuff, or whatever it is now, is really not working.»

City outreach workers visited the encampment this week and were seen primarily collecting trash while many tents remained in place.

Joe told Fox News Digital he believed that police should be given greater authority to enforce the city’s rules.

«I think we need to enforce and give the police the right to do their job,» he said.

The encampments near the Intrepid Museum have drawn complaints about blocked sidewalks, trash and illegal activity.

«It’s terrible,» Joe said. «Drugs, prostitution and everything else in between.»

Some people at the encampment appeared to be drawing power from utility poles, prompting an NYPD response Tuesday.

«The NYPD has not been given the green light to clean this encampment up, but we are ready to do so,» an NYPD spokesperson told Fox News Digital.

The New York Post reported that sex workers were bringing customers to tents and nearby bathrooms, citing interviews with people in the area. Fox News Digital has not independently verified that claim.

The encampment runs from 34th Street to 46th Street along 11th Avenue. The encampment’s proximity to the Intrepid Museum and Javits Center has also raised concerns about its effect on tourism.

Karen, a visitor from Belgium, said she was disappointed by what she viewed as the government’s failure to support homeless people.

«It’s sad that they’re not getting the support they promised them,» Karen said. «I don’t know how it works here in America, but yeah, like when a politician promises to help people, they should help everyone.»

Mamdani made expanding housing assistance and changing the city’s treatment of homeless New Yorkers central parts of his mayoral campaign. The socialist mayor promised to expand the city’s housing voucher program but later appealed a court order requiring its expansion. His administration said the appeal was necessary to pursue an expansion that would be financially sustainable over the medium and long term.

«Shame on us. We have so much wealth in this city,» Joan said of the conditions and the city’s failure to house people living on the street.

«I’m okay with paying more,» she continued. «Taxpayer dollars help people who don’t have a place to stay — give them shelter, give them food, help them get trained, get a job, whatever.»

Mamdani said earlier this week that the encampments would be cleared, although he did not give a specific timetable.

Mamdani’s office did not respond to a request for comment.

«Make this a better place for everyone, make it a better place for tourists,» Joan said.

«This is not a great look for us,» she continued. «Great city. We can do better.»

Conservatives flip script on Newsom after he demanded 25th Amendment for Trump: ‘Propped up a vegetable’

California Gov. Gavin Newsom ignited an online firestorm on Thursday evening when, in response to President Donald Trump’s election integrity speech, he suggested that it was time to invoke the 25th Amendment and remove the president for displaying what he described as cognitive impairment.

«The only thing missing in Donald Trump’s speech was tin foil. This was a legitimate 25th Amendment moment — the rambling of a mad king,» Newsom said.

Newsom’s call to use the 25th Amendment plays into preexisting calls from Democrats to examine Trump’s cognitive performance, but also sparked controversy online about how Democrats could seriously question Trump’s mental state when they dismissed similar concerns about now-former President Joe Biden.

The 25th Amendment, ratified in 1967, allows the Cabinet to deem the president unfit for duty or allows Congress to establish an independent body to make that call.

To some critics, that case was much stronger under the last administration.

«You literally propped up a vegetable and lied to the American people about his cognitive decline for four years and never mentioned the 25th amendment once,» the official Republican National Committee X account wrote in response, referring to Republican doubts that Biden had the mental acuity to run the country at age 82.

«Given Newsom’s defense to this day of President Biden, calling him one of the greatest presidents ever, there’s a saying around sitting this one out that applies here…» Fox News contributor Joe Concha wrote on X.

«Gavin Newsome wants to remove [Trump] from office for disclosing California could have tens of thousands of aliens illegally registered to vote and that China attacked 220 million voters,» Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton said.

Trump addressed the country on Thursday evening, informing the public that his administration had discovered a series of weaknesses in election integrity.

In particular, Trump said newly declassified documents would reveal foreign data theft carried out by China, that members of the U.S. government had known about election vulnerabilities for years, that Americans had been misled about those weaknesses and new evidence of «election fraud.»

Fox News Digital could not independently verify the content of the documents that were released by the White House.

Like many Democrats, Newsom cast doubt on the motives behind Trump’s speech, which came just four months ahead of the November midterms.

«He wants to rig the election in 2026. He knows he is going to lose. That’s what that whole thing was about,» Newsom said.

Other Democrats on Thursday rushed to Newsom’s support.

«Boom. Gov. Gavin Newsom calls for the 25th Amendment to be invoked after Trump’s unhinged speech tonight. He’s right! Trump is mentally deranged and unfit to be president,» Harry Sisson, a Democratic influencer, wrote in a post to X.

Rep. Yassamin Ansari, D-Ariz., also echoed those calls.

«He lies with every breath he takes. How can anyone deny the urgency of the 25th Amendment at this point?»

This isn’t the first time Ansari has called to implement the 25th Amendment. Earlier this year, she joined other Democrats like Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., to call for Congress to remove Trump and establish an independent group to review the cognitive state of any president. The group would have included past presidents, physicians and other experts.

«Trump is clearly experiencing severe cognitive decline and leaders from every political affiliation have recognized this. He’s become a national security threat to the United States,» Ansari said in April.

Newsom’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on if he would support the bill supported by Ansari.

Other conservatives raised concerns about how invoking the 25th Amendment might upend the country, taking it into uncharted territory.

«Does anyone else think it’s weird that as he talks about Trump rigging an election, he simultaneously asks for the president’s cabinet to remove a duly elected president?» Joe Patterson, a California assemblyman, said in a post on social media.

«Yeah, Gavin … that would pose no risk to our democracy at all. Get real!»
