Surinam, el país sudamericano que China estrangula con deuda y con patrullas militares
Quizás la falta de conocimiento sobre este país se deba a su idioma y cultura, o la falta de vuelos que unan las grandes ciudades con Paramaribo, la capital de Surinam. Lo cierto es que esta nación -con poco más de 650 mil habitantes y que comparte frontera con Brasil y con Guayana Francesa– pareciera vivir de espaldas a América del Sur y más conectada con el Caribe. En cambio, existe un lejano régimen que busca ganar espacios más profundos: China.
Desde hace años, el régimen chino fijó sus ojos en Surinam. Y sobre todo en sus recursos forestales y mineros. La última muestra de esa penetración ocurrió el pasado 14 de julio cuando 14 ciudadanos chinos armados y vestidos con uniformes militares fueron detenidos. Portaban, además, una bandera china. No está claro si la detención se produjo como iniciativa gubernamental o por vergüenza: un video se viralizó y a las autoridades no les quedó más opción que actuar.
Las imágenes fueron capturadas por habitantes locales cerca de Sarakreek, en el distrito de Brokopondo, en pleno territorio selvático. Esa zona es conocida por la minería ilegal de oro a gran escala: los chinos tienen gran presencia sobre esa industria que devasta la jungla surinamés. “Hasta donde sabemos, se reporta que estaban realizando labores de seguridad”, declaró en un comunicado el ministro de Justicia de Surinam, Harish Monorath, al momento del arresto. El control chino sobre la zona parecería absoluto.
La embajada del régimen chino en Surinam, comandada por Lin Ji, tan proclive a emitir comunicados, no pronunció palabra sobre el incidente. ¿Surinam entregó territorios soberanos a China y sus mineras para su patrullaje y control? Geruchten.
Deuda y minería
El régimen chino desde hace décadas tiene presencia en Surinam. La población asiática creció pero también las empresas y corporaciones dependientes de Beijing. Son las principales responsables de la deforestación de la jungla amazónica del país y también de la explotación minera, tanto legal como ilegal. Quienes más lo sufren son los pueblos originarios, que son desplazados ante cada avance chino.
En Sarakreek, donde fueron grabados los “militares chinos”, varias corporaciones que responden al Partido Comunista Chino (PCC) tienen presencia estelar. Ellas son: Zijin Mining Group Co. Ltd. y China Mega Suriname Mining Investment Company N.V. Se cree que fueron estas las que contrataron a los uniformados para controlar el área.
Pero no es la única presencia impulsada por el régimen chino explotando los recursos de Surinam.
El proyecto de una mina de bauxita -roca para la extracción de aluminio- de la corporación china Chinalco en el oeste de Surinam reavivó el debate sobre los derechos territoriales de los pueblos indígenas y los deterioros ambientales. Según informó Mongabay, la iniciativa, que podría comenzar a operar en 2026, contempla una concesión de 280 mil hectáreas y una producción anual estimada en 6 millones de toneladas durante 30 años. El acuerdo también prevé obras sobre un puerto y un ferrocarril, además de derechos prioritarios para dragar el río Corantijn.
La Asociación de Líderes de Aldeas Indígenas de Surinam cuestionó que el memorando de entendimiento con Chinalco se firmara en noviembre de 2024 antes de que las comunidades fueran informadas formalmente. La organización sostiene que no se respetó el derecho al consentimiento libre, previo e informado y pidió suspender el proyecto hasta realizar una consulta. Mongabay señaló que Surinam es el único país de América del Sur que no reconoce de manera formal los derechos ancestrales de los pueblos indígenas sobre sus tierras, pese a una sentencia de la Corte Interamericana de Derechos Humanos de 2007.
La expansión de las concesiones madereras a corporaciones chinas en territorios saamaka abrió nuevos caminos en áreas de selva y facilitó la extracción y el traslado de troncos. Líderes saamaka denunciaron que las autorizaciones se concedieron sin consulta previa y alertaron que la tala, sumada a la minería, aceleró la deforestación de la jungla.
Una investigación de The Washington Post señaló que desde las zonas portuarias ubicadas sobre el río Surinam partían embarcaciones cargadas con troncos hacia China. El reporte recogió las advertencias de investigadores que sostienen que esos barcos también pueden transportar fauna silvestre y otras mercancías ilegales. La nota no determinó que todos los cargamentos de madera fueran ilegales ni identificó a las compañías vinculadas con los envíos, pero situó el comercio de troncos dentro de un contexto de controles limitados y economías ilícitas conectadas en el interior del país.
Pero en la breve geografía surinamesa existe otro problema con China. Entre 2010 y 2020, el entonces presidente Dési Bouterse inclinó su gobierno hacia el régimen de Xi Jinping. Esto generó que el país se endeudara en 544 millones de dólares con Beijing. Sus acreedores son el China Exim Bank y el Industrial and Commercial Bank of China.
En noviembre de 2024, el ministro de Finanzas de Surinam, Stanley Raghoebarsing firmó un acuerdo para reestructurar esa deuda, que continúa drenando las arcas públicas del país. Para lograrlo, el entonces presidente de Surinam debió besar el anillo de Xi en una gira por la capital china.
Surinam logró su independencia de Países Bajos el 25 de noviembre de 1975. Pero las patrullas militares chinas, las deudas financieras impagables con Beijing, la extracción ilegal de oro, de bauxita, la deforestación y el deterioro del medio ambiente y el desplazamiento de pueblos originarios pondrían en duda ese estatus tan preciado.

EXCLUSIVE: FBI Director Kash Patel is set to tell lawmakers Tuesday that the FBI and its law enforcement partners have achieved what he calls the «most prolific run of crime reduction in United States history,» according to his prepared opening remarks for the Senate Judiciary Committee’s annual FBI oversight hearing.
In his opening statement obtained by Digital, Patel will highlight the achievements before the Senate Judiciary Committee, which will focus on recent changes within the FBI.
The results include a major drop in murder rates, crackdowns on drug and human trafficking, successful efforts to thwart terrorist attacks and the apprehension of top fugitives.
According to his prepared statement, Patel attributes the gains to the Trump administration, saying the agency could not have achieved them without the administration’s support.

«In 2025, according to the Uniform Crime Report, we delivered the LARGEST year to year reduction of violent crime in AMERICAN HISTORY,» Patel’s statement reads.
«They happened with an administration that BACKS the BLUE and a new FBI that has been REBUILT to crush violent threats BEFORE they harm Americans.»
According to the FBI’s figures, the national murder rate fell 20% over the previous 18 months while violent crime arrests increased 90% and violent criminal and gang member arrests rose 30%.
Just this weekend, the FBI disrupted a terrorist attack near Pittsburgh, according to Patel’s prepared statement. The suspect allegedly purchased a firearm and indicated online that he intended to carry out a violent attack on behalf of ISIS.
In total, about 1,039 individuals were thwarted from executing terrorist attacks, according to Patel’s statement. The individuals are among more than 4,260 arrests tied to Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs).
Those efforts also included securing major national events, such as the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Grand Prix and UFC 250 without a single major security incident.

Patel is expected to announce at Tuesday’s hearing the capture of Anibal Alexander Canelon Aguirre in Venezuela, making him the 10th FBI «Ten Most Wanted» fugitive nabbed during Patel’s tenure.
According to Patel’s prepared statement, the FBI has now captured 10 fugitives from its «Ten Most Wanted» list — more than 2.5 times the number apprehended during the previous four years combined.
Aguirre, according to the FBI, led «a large international conspiracy to steal millions of dollars from financial institutions in support of the Tren de Aragua, through an ATM jackpotting scheme since at least 2024.»
Patel will also highlight that the FBI seized more than 3,258 kilograms of fentanyl, identified about 11,000 child victims and arrested more than 5,000 child predators and human traffickers.
Patel’s prepared statement credits the historic transformation in American public safety and agency accountability to aggressive law enforcement, technological modernization, including artificial intelligence and operational efficiency.
«We expanded our use of artificial intelligence by 605 percent to accelerate threat detection, triage, analysis, and processing,» the statement reads.

Patel is expected to tell lawmakers that the FBI eliminated a multi-year backlog of 1.8 million lab samples while saving more than $300 million through spending and facilities reviews.
«As we recently announced, the FBI’s Lab Division had a backlog of over 1.8 million samples that had existed for years prior to my confirmation… As of last month, that backlog is now ZERO,» Patel’s statement reads.
Patel will also highlight internal bureau reforms that shifted more than 1,000 agents and staff into field operations, along with the opening of a new field office in Billings, Montana, as part of the FBI’s expansion in Indian Country through Operation Steadfast Promise.

NATO jets shoot down drone in Lithuanian airspace as Russia grows ‘increasingly reckless,’ Rutte says

Two Italian Eurofighter Typhoons operating under NATO command scrambled overnight and shot down a drone over Lithuania, marking the first time a drone has been downed in the Baltic nation’s airspace, officials said Tuesday.
The incident came less than a day after NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte warned that strikes close to alliance territory would drive the 32-nation bloc to increase its support for Ukraine.
The drone was destroyed near the village of Pratkūnai, about 60 miles west of the capital, Vilnius.

«Last night, two Italian Eurofighters deployed on NATO Air Defence mission at Siauliai, scrambled and shot down a drone over Lithuanian airspace,» a NATO official told Fox News Digital. «The operation was coordinated through NATO’s Combined Air Operations Centre in Uedem, Germany. Investigations are ongoing together with national authorities.»
Lithuanian officials said the drone most likely entered from neighboring Belarus and remained in the country’s airspace for about 30 minutes before it was intercepted.

Lithuanian Air Force Commander Antanas Matutis said the recovered drone was «likely» carrying explosives.
Authorities are examining the wreckage of the downed drone to determine its origin and purpose.
The incident comes amid heightened tensions along NATO’s eastern flank.

Speaking in Brussels on Monday, Rutte said strikes «close to NATO territory» showed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s «desperation and also his desire to sow fear and terror.»
«Russia is growing increasingly reckless as it continues its terrible war against Ukraine,» Rutte said, while pledging to strengthen NATO defenses along its eastern flank.

In a separate incident Tuesday, Denmark said a Russian frigate fired flares toward a Danish military helicopter conducting routine surveillance over the Baltic Sea. Denmark summoned the Russian ambassador over the encounter.
Meanwhile, Russia continued drone strikes across Ukraine, killing three people in Kyiv, Sloviansk and Kramatorsk, according to Ukrainian officials.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv remained ready to support de-escalation if the U.S. could ensure Russia was prepared to stop its attacks. Ukrainian forces also struck an oil refinery in Syzran and targeted a drone production facility in Taganrog, he said.

Obama, Biden judges draw fresh fire as Trump’s immigration court clashes heat up: ‘Almost impossible’
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin is drawing a distinction between the federal judges he says the Trump administration can work with and those he says are «almost impossible» to deal with, singling out judges appointed by President Joe Biden as the administration continues to fight immigration battles in federal court.
«We find judges, for the most part, honestly, that we can work with in almost every area. But you’ve got some of the judges that were appointed underneath Obama and definitely, if they’re appointed by Biden, they are almost impossible to work with,» said Mullin on the sidelines of the RNC Midterm Convention on Thursday.
Mullin’s comments come as the Trump administration has repeatedly run into federal judges over its immigration policies, including recent rulings involving birthright citizenship and immigrant visa issuance. But while those court fights have received significant attention, Mullin offered a broader assessment of the judges he believes are most difficult for DHS to work with, specifically pointing to judges appointed by Biden — and, to a lesser extent, Obama.

In April, Biden-appointed Judge Brian Murphy blocked the Trump administration from ending temporary protected status for more than 5,000 Ethiopians, while in September, Biden-appointed Judge Deborah Boardman blocked enforcement of Trump’s August executive order limiting birthright citizenship, finding the order likely unconstitutional.
Mullin said immigration cases should be «cut and dry,» arguing that they ultimately come down to whether an individual entered the country legally and has the proper paperwork.
He compared the issue to homeownership, asking whether someone has «the deed of the house you’re living in» and whether they legally own it.
Mullin also criticized state and local officials in blue states for limiting cooperation with ICE detainer requests, including in cases in which DHS alleges that detainees are violent criminals, drug dealers or known terrorists.
«It makes absolutely zero sense,» Mullin said.
Beyond the court system, DHS is also facing battles with elected leaders in blue cities and states.

«Virginia is out of control right now. I mean, when you start looking at the great state of Virginia, who had a great governor in Governor Youngkin … and now what they have, they canceled their 287(g) programs, they’re not allowing any cooperation with ICE or any of DHS’s law enforcement push to make sure we get the criminals off our streets,» said Mullin.
Within weeks of taking office, Virginia Democratic Gov. Abigail Spanberger directed the state’s law-enforcement agencies to terminate their existing 287(g) agreements with ICE, which her administration said placed participating officers under federal supervision to conduct civil immigration enforcement.
Mullin claimed that 50% of recent deaths in Fairfax County were «at the hands of an illegal.»
«I’ve said this multiple times, every death that happens at the hands of an illegal is 100% preventable. So why the governor of Virginia, why they wouldn’t participate with us being DHS and forcing our nation’s laws and getting their criminals off the streets make no sense,» he said.

Still, Mullin said the Trump administration would not force blue cities to accept federal assistance, arguing that DHS would remain ready to help communities that request it.
«What we’re not gonna do is force our way in. You’re gonna have to decide that,» Mullin said, leaving the decision to individual communities.
In Danbury, Connecticut, the City Council amended its police hiring ordinance to allow lawful permanent residents and DACA recipients to apply to become police officers.
«I don’t understand how you can be in law enforcement and yet you have no legal status. I just don’t know what, in some of these very liberal towns and liberal states, what are they thinking,» said Mullin.
«They’re prioritizing criminals over law-abiding citizens. We are a nation of laws, and either we respect them or we don’t,» he added. «What separates us from a third world country is we don’t believe in lawlessness and when you came in this country illegally, you chose to skip the line because we have a legal process.»
