World leaders, dignitaries pay tribute to America on historic 250th birthday

America’s role in world affairs and its special relationships with allies and partners were on full display Saturday as world leaders offered congratulations and praise while the U.S. celebrated its 250th birthday.
«This year marks a truly historic milestone and a moment of great celebration for Americans everywhere,» The United Kingdom’s King Charles III wrote in a statement . «It offers an opportunity to pause and reflect on the remarkable journey of the United States over the past two and a half centuries, and to honour all that has been achieved since 1776.»

Pope Leo XIV, leader of the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics, extended his «heartfelt congratulations» to the American people on the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
«In marking this anniversary, it is important to recognize that freedom of religion has long been central to the American promise, protecting both individual dignity and the peaceful coexistence of a diverse people,» Leo wrote in a statement.

In France, authorities illuminated the Eiffel Tower in red, white and blue in what Paris described as a «heartfelt tribute to America’s 250th anniversary» and «a powerful reminder that the friendship between our two nations dates back to the 18th century.»
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized that the United States was «founded on freedom, democracy, and responsibility.
«Germany and the USA have always enjoyed a close friendship. Especially in challenging times, our transatlantic partnership remains indispensable,» he wrote on X.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote that July 4th marks «one of humanity’s brightest, strongest, and most influential dreams – the American Dream of an independent, free, and prosperous nation that defends people’s freedom, faith, and the pursuit of happiness.»
Meanwhile, the Russian Foreign Ministry shared a statement from President Vladimir Putin to his American counterpart: «Donald, I wish you and your loved ones health, well-being and every success, and I wish all citizens of the United States happiness and prosperity.»

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday spoke with President Trump to congratulate him and the United States.

«The prime minister said in their conversation that the U.S. is a guarantor of global freedom, and Israel greatly values the close ties between nations,» according to a statement from Netanyahu’s office.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog visited U.S. Ambassador Mike Huckabee at the American embassy in Jerusalem on Friday.
«I am extremely moved and happy to be here at the American Embassy in Jerusalem, the capital of the State of Israel, at the Embassy which was launched by President Trump in his historic recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital,» said Herzog. «American Independence is one of the greatest moments in history, and it has changed the fate of humanity.»

In a letter to Trump, Herzog wrote, «This is also a time to express our deepest appreciation for the unique and unbreakable partnership between the United States of America and Israel. Our two nations draw from the same wellsprings of the Bible, and we share the same fundamental values of freedom, democracy, and human dignity.»
Argentina’s President Javier Milei attended the U.S. Embassy in Argentina’s Independence Day celebration, which included the national anthems of both countries, live music, and celebrity lookalikes.
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi noted that her country had gifted America 250 cherry trees . «Going forward, Japan and the United States will continue to work together to further strengthen the bonds between our two countries,» she wrote on X.
Hsiao Bi-khim, vice president of Taiwan, threw the first pitch at an American Institute in Taiwan baseball event celebrating America’s founding. «Our countries share beliefs in freedom & democracy, & baseball is loved by both our peoples. Congrats and Happy July 4,» she wrote.

Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, president of the United Arab Emirates, said the «journey of the United States’ founding is one of determination and resolve , values that continue to underpin the enduring partnership and mutual trust our countries share today.»
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud sent a cable of congratulations to Trump, wishing the president «continued good health and happiness, and the government and people of the US steady progress and prosperity.»
Pakistan , which is acting as a mediator in ongoing talks between Washington and Tehran, extended «warmest congratulations and best wishes to the United States of America and its people on its 250th Independence Day.»

Qatar, another mediator in the talks with the Iranian regime, released a statement from HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani who sent a cable of «congratulations to HE President of the United States of America Donald Trump on the anniversary of his country’s Independence Day.»

Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, said the Declaration of Independence «gave birth to a new nation founded on the ideals of liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
«For 250 years, our transatlantic partnership has been shaped by our shared values and family bonds. And, at times, it has been strengthened by the immense bravery and lives lost in the defence of freedom,» she added.

President Donald Trump on Friday ordered his administration to install signs outside the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History directing visitors to what the White House describes as «accurate» information about the nation’s past.
The executive order instructs the National Park Service, which maintains the sidewalks outside the museum, to place signs informing visitors about a White House report released July 4 that criticized the Smithsonian’s portrayal of American history. Trump also directed the creation of a temporary exhibit intended to correct what his administration considers inaccurate historical information.

The move follows a report from Trump’s Domestic Policy Council that accused the Smithsonian and the National Museum of American History of failing to present history «in a way that is inspiring, unifying, and worthy of our great republic.»

Because the Smithsonian operates independently of the executive branch, Trump cannot directly remove museum leadership or unilaterally change exhibits. Instead, the order targets federal property outside the museum that falls under National Park Service jurisdiction.
National Museum of American History Director Anthea M. Hartig defended the museum during congressional testimony this week.
«As we continue to fact check the report, we unwaveringly attest that it does not fairly or accurately characterize the full body of work at the museum,» Hartig told lawmakers. «There is always room for improvement. But I also know the beauty and the inspiration and the expertise that lies in our collections, our exhibits, and our programming.»

Friday’s order builds on Trump’s broader effort to reshape the Smithsonian’s exhibits.
In March, Trump signed an executive order directing the Smithsonian’s Board of Regents to eliminate what the administration described as «improper, divisive or anti-American ideology» from the institution’s museums.
The White House later criticized the National Museum of American History’s «Entertainment Nation» exhibit, arguing displays about American pop culture framed the nation’s history through an ideological lens rather than celebrating its achievements. White House official Lindsey Halligan previously told Fox News Digital that «American taxpayers should not be funding institutions that undermine our country or promote one-sided, divisive political narratives.»

At the time, the Smithsonian said it was conducting a review of museum content and remained committed to «continuous and rigorous scholarship and research and unbiased presentation of facts and history.»
The Smithsonian is overseen by a Board of Regents that includes Vice President JD Vance, Chief Justice John Roberts, members of Congress and citizen regents. The institution receives roughly two-thirds of its approximately $1 billion annual budget through federal appropriations.

Destituyeron al fiscal general de la Corte Penal Internacional tras una denuncia de agresión sexual
La Asamblea de los Estados Partes de la Corte Penal Internacional (CPI) decidió este viernes destituir al fiscal general Karim Khan, acusado de agresión sexual por una integrante de su equipo de trabajo, en una votación secreta realizada durante una reunión extraordinaria celebrada en la sede de las Naciones Unidas en Nueva York.
Según confirmaron fuentes diplomáticas a la agencia de noticias AFP, 82 de los 125 Estados miembros de la CPI votaron a favor de remover al jurista británico de 56 años, superando ampliamente el mínimo de 63 votos requerido para aprobar la medida.
Khan rechaza las acusaciones y anunció que impugnará la decisión por las vías legales disponibles.
“El señor Khan impugnará la legalidad y la justicia de la decisión mediante todos los mecanismos legales disponibles”, escribió en la red social X su abogado, Tayab Ali. El letrado reiteró que su cliente niega los hechos que se le atribuyen.
Khan había dejado sus funciones en mayo de 2025 para concentrarse en su defensa, luego de que se abriera una investigación por una denuncia presentada por una compañera de trabajo. El mes pasado, además, fue suspendido por la Mesa de la Asamblea de los Estados Partes, un órgano directivo de la CPI integrado por 21 miembros que convocó la reunión en la que finalmente se resolvió su destitución.
La denunciante, identificada públicamente como Sarah, una abogada de origen malasio, brindó recientemente una entrevista a CNN en la que relató detalles de los presuntos hechos. La mujer aseguró haber sido víctima de una “escalada de intentos” de agresión y afirmó que la relación jerárquica con Khan impedía cualquier posibilidad de consentimiento.
“Es imposible que exista consentimiento cuando hay un desequilibrio de poder de tal magnitud. Lo que mucha gente no entiende es que el señor Khan no era sólo mi jefe, sino el jefe de todo el mundo”, declaró.

Antes de la votación, la defensa del fiscal había pedido a los Estados miembros que se abstuvieran de avanzar con la destitución. En una carta abierta difundida esta semana, sus abogados sostuvieron que los procedimientos seguidos no habían garantizado adecuadamente su derecho a la defensa y cuestionaron los informes que sustentan la investigación, cuyos detalles aún no fueron divulgados públicamente. El equipo legal también advirtió que una eventual remoción podría afectar la independencia de futuros fiscales de la Corte. “La independencia conlleva un precio y la maquinaria de la Corte puede volverse contra sus propios responsables cuando dicha independencia se torna incómoda”, señalaron.
La figura de Khan había cobrado relevancia internacional en los últimos años por investigaciones de alto perfil. Entre ellas, el pedido de órdenes de arresto contra el primer ministro israelí, Benjamin Netanyahu, y el entonces ministro de Defensa Yoav Gallant por presuntos crímenes vinculados a la guerra en Gaza. También impulsó acciones judiciales contra dirigentes de Hamas. Como respuesta a esas iniciativas, Estados Unidos le impuso sanciones económicas y restricciones de ingreso al país.
La destitución generó reacciones inmediatas. El ministro de Asuntos Exteriores de Israel, Gideon Sa’ar, celebró en X la salida de Khan y la calificó como un relevo “largamente esperado”. Además, acusó al exfiscal de haber promovido órdenes de arresto “escandalosas” contra funcionarios israelíes para desviar la atención de las denuncias en su contra.
Por su parte, Stephen Rapp, exembajador estadounidense especializado en crímenes de guerra, había afirmado antes de la votación que existían pruebas suficientes para justificar la remoción. A su juicio, no actuar habría perjudicado seriamente la credibilidad de la Corte y la habría dejado más expuesta a cuestionamientos externos.
