Eric Swalwell exits California governor race apologizing for past judgment while denying claims

Rep. Eric Swalwell said he is suspending his campaign for California governor, citing personal issues and ongoing allegations in a statement posted on X.
«I am suspending my campaign for Governor,» Swalwell wrote. «To my family, staff, friends, and supporters, I am deeply sorry for mistakes in judgment I’ve made in my past.
«I will fight the serious, false allegations that have been made — but that’s my fight, not a campaign’s,» he added.
The decision comes as pressure mounted over sexual assault allegations published in a bombshell report from the San Francisco Chronicle on Friday, with lawmakers from both parties calling on him to drop out of the race and resign from Congress.

Figures calling on Swalwell to step aside included former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.
Pelosi urged that consideration of the accusations against Swalwell take place outside the context of his campaign.
«The young woman who has made serious allegations against Congressman Swalwell must be respected and heard. This extremely sensitive matter must be appropriately investigated with full transparency and accountability. As I discussed with Congressman Swalwell, it is clear that this is best done outside of a gubernatorial campaign,» Pelosi said in a statement given to NBC.

A number of other Democrats soon joined the former speaker’s calls, with a handful rescinding previous endorsements of the campaign.
«I’ve read the San Francisco Chronicle’s reporting, and I take it seriously,» Sen. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., said in a post to X.
«What is described is indefensible. Women who come forward with accounts like this deserve to be heard with respect, not questioned or dismissed,» he added.
Rep. Ted Lieu, who sits on the House Judiciary Committee, also said he would pull his endorsement.

«In light of the recent allegations against Representative Eric Swalwell, I am withdrawing my endorsement of his campaign for Governor,» Lieu said in his own post.
In its Friday report, the San Francisco Chronicle detailed graphic accounts from a woman accusing Swalwell of pursuing intoxicated women, pressuring employees into intimate situations and asking for explicit images from female contacts.
Rumblings of misconduct from Swalwell first emerged earlier this month when Cheyenne Hunt, a former Capitol Hill staffer and a political media personality, began circulating testimony from women who said they had been sexually assaulted by the congressman.
«The Democratic candidate currently leading in the California governor’s race has a known history of being predatory towards women,» Hunt claimed in a post to social media.
Despite initially remaining moot on the allegations, Swalwell’s office broke its silence on the matter in comments made to the New York Post earlier this week.
«This false, outrageous rumor is being spread 27 days before an election begins by flailing opponents who have sadly teamed up with MAGA conspiracy theorists because they know Eric Swalwell is the frontrunner in this race,» Micah Beasley, a spokesperson for Swalwell, said.

With Swalwell exiting the race, the battle to succeed term-limited Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom becomes even more uncertain and turbulent ahead of the June 2 primary. Early voting will begin on May 4.
Public opinion surveys indicated that Swalwell was the top polling Democrat in the race, ahead of former Rep. Katie Porter and billionaire Tom Steyer, who’s flooded the airwaves with ads since declaring his candidacy in November. Both Porter and Steyer on Friday had called on Swalwell to suspend his gubernatorial campaign and resign from Congress.
The crowded field of Democrats also includes former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra and former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.
There are two major Republicans in the race: conservative commentator and former Fox News host Steve Hilton and Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco.

President Donald Trump endorsed Hilton last weekend, which appears to be boosting his support. But Trump’s backing wasn’t enough to put Hilton over the top this weekend at the California GOP annual convention. Neither Hilton or Bianco was able to top the 60% support of delegates threshold needed to earn the state party’s endorsement.
Democrats and Republicans appear on the same ballot in the June primary, with the top two finishers advancing to November’s general election.

El Comando Sur de Estados Unidos (SOUTHCOM) llevó adelante un nuevo «ataque cinético letal» el sábado contra un buque dedicado al narcotráfico, el cual navegaba en aguas del Pacífico oriental. La reciente ofensiva estadounidense, la cuarta de la semana, dejó tres narcotraficantes muertos.
Según detalló el propio SOUTHCOM a través de un comunicado en redes sociales, la operación fue ejecutada por la Fuerza de Tarea Conjunta de la operación Lanza del Sur, bajo el mando del general Francis L. Donovan. Un vídeo en blanco y negro que acompañó la publicación mostró la narco lancha en alta mar antes de ser engullida por una gran explosión.
El cuerpo militar precisó que la embarcación atacada estaba bajo control de organizaciones terroristas designadas y transitaba rutas frecuentemente utilizadas para el transporte ilícito de estupefacientes. Además, informó que no se registraron heridos ni daños entre las fuerzas estadounidenses que participaron en el operativo.
De acuerdo con el comunicado, la acción resultó posible por la utilización de información de inteligencia, que permitió identificar y localizar la nave involucrada. El SOUTHCOM aseguró que el objetivo mantenía una participación activa en actividades ilegales en la región.
La reciente operación, enmarcada dentro de la estrategia de la operación Lanza del Sur, evidencia la continuidad de los esfuerzos de Estados Unidos para combatir el narcotráfico en aguas internacionales, sin que se reporten bajas entre su personal en esta serie de intervenciones.
El ataque del Comando Sur elevó a más de 200 el número de narcotraficantes muertos desde el inicio de la ofensiva militar impulsada por la administración de Donald Trump en septiembre. La cifra refleja el saldo acumulado de fallecidos en el marco de la estrategia estadounidense contra el narcotráfico en América Latina.
La operación Lanza del Sur comenzó bajo la coordinación del Ejército estadounidense, como parte de la intensificación de acciones para frenar las actividades de los cárteles de la droga que operan desde América Latina. El propio Trump remarcó que Washington mantiene una guerra abierta contra estas organizaciones criminales.
SOUTHCOM es responsable de las operaciones de seguridad y cooperación en el Caribe, América Central y Sudamérica, en el marco de sus tareas de combate al narcotráfico en la región.
Las operaciones del SOUTHCOM se enmarcan en una estrategia integral que combina control naval, vigilancia aérea y labores de inteligencia realizadas en conjunto con países de Sudamérica y Centroamérica. Este enfoque busca ejercer presión en distintos frentes para debilitar las redes de narcotráfico que operan en la región.
Autoridades estadounidenses remarcaron que las acciones militares cumplen con los estándares legales internacionales y se enfocan en neutralizar amenazas identificadas contra la seguridad no solo de Estados Unidos, sino también de países aliados.
El secretario de Defensa, Pete Hegseth, defendió la necesidad de este accionar: “No permitiremos que organizaciones criminales usen el mar para infiltrar drogas en nuestro país. Hemos salvado miles de vidas al cortar estas rutas”.
La administración del presidente Donald Trump otorgó máxima prioridad a esta ofensiva militar, implementando operaciones conjuntas, patrullas navales y coordinación permanente con agencias de inteligencia para detectar y destruir embarcaciones sospechosas tanto en el Caribe como en el Pacífico. Según la postura oficial, la finalidad es interrumpir cadenas logísticas criminales de alto impacto y reforzar la seguridad regional frente al avance del narcotráfico.

President Donald Trump on Saturday floated the idea of hosting a massive MAGA rally to commemorate the nation’s 250th anniversary after numerous artists pulled out of a planned concert this summer.
In a lengthy Truth Social post, Trump suggested scrapping the Great American State Fair’s Freedom 250 concerts. He also took aim at a federal judge who on Friday ordered that his name be removed from the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
«We should have a giant MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN RALLY, for 250, instead of having overpriced singers, who nobody wants to hear, whose music is boring, and yet who do nothing but complain,» Trump wrote.
«Cancel it, just like I canceled my involvement with the failing and unsafe to be in Kennedy Center, because a Highly Conflicted, Crooked Federal Judge, said that I should not be allowed to spend my time and money in order to MAKE THE CENTER GREAT AGAIN, actually, far greater than it ever was before!» he continued.

The comments came as several artists backed out of performing at the Great American State Fair, a large-scale national celebration planned on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., stretching from the U.S. Capitol to the Washington Monument.
The event is scheduled to run from June 25 through July 10, 2026, as part of the nation’s America 250 celebration.
Earlier this week, Freedom 250 organizers released a list of performers slated to appear at the event, but several artists later withdrew, including Martina McBride, Bret Michaels, Young MC, Morris Day and The Time, and C+C Music Factory.

Other performers, including rapper Vanilla Ice, have said they are «honored» to participate.
In a separate social media post Saturday, Trump suggested he could replace the concert with a major speech after several artists got «the yips.»

Trump said he was considering delivering the speech and holding a rally June 24 to kick off the festivities.
«I don’t want so-called ‘Artists’ that get paid far too much money, who aren’t happy,» he wrote. «I only want to be surrounded by Happy People, Smart People, Successful People, and People that know how to WIN.»
Freedom 250 later announced that Trump would, in fact, deliver a speech ahead of the Great American State Fair.

«As the visionary behind the Great American State Fair, we are excited to announce that President Trump will personally kick off this historic celebration on Wednesday, June 24 in an opening ceremony celebrating America’s 250th birthday,» Freedom 250 spokeswoman Danielle Alvarez wrote on X.

El Sistema de Naciones Unidas en Honduras anunció el inicio de una amplia intervención humanitaria destinada a atender a más de 760 mil personas en situación de vulnerabilidad, gracias a una asignación de 63.2 millones de dólares provenientes del Fondo Humanitario Regional para América Latina y el Caribe (RHPF LAC, por sus siglas en inglés).
La iniciativa comenzará oficialmente el próximo 1 de junio de 2026 y tendrá una duración de seis meses, período durante el cual se desarrollarán acciones coordinadas en 33 municipios y más de 1,500 comunidades del país identificadas como las más afectadas por diversas crisis humanitarias.
El programa será ejecutado de manera conjunta por siete agencias del Sistema de Naciones Unidas en Honduras: el Programa Mundial de Alimentos (PMA), la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Alimentación y la Agricultura (FAO), el Fondo de las Naciones Unidas para la Infancia (UNICEF), el Alto Comisionado de las Naciones Unidas para los Refugiados (ACNUR), la Organización Internacional para las Migraciones (OIM), la Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS) y la Oficina de las Naciones Unidas de Servicios para Proyectos (UNOPS).
A estas instituciones se suman las organizaciones no gubernamentales internacionales CARE y GOAL, que colaborarán en la implementación de una estrategia multisectorial orientada a brindar asistencia a las poblaciones con mayores niveles de necesidad.
La respuesta forma parte del Plan de Acción Humanitaria impulsado por la Red Humanitaria de Honduras, un mecanismo liderado por Naciones Unidas y la Secretaría de Gestión de Riesgos y Contingencias Nacionales (COPECO), cuyo objetivo es coordinar esfuerzos para atender a las comunidades más afectadas por emergencias y crisis prolongadas.
Según las evaluaciones realizadas por la Red Humanitaria, alrededor de 1.4 millones de personas continúan enfrentando necesidades humanitarias en Honduras, especialmente en municipios donde convergen múltiples factores de riesgo, como fenómenos climáticos extremos, inseguridad alimentaria, violencia y desplazamiento de población.
Las comunidades seleccionadas para recibir asistencia fueron identificadas mediante procesos técnicos de focalización desarrollados en coordinación con autoridades municipales, organizaciones comunitarias y actores humanitarios presentes en los territorios.
De acuerdo con Naciones Unidas, esta metodología busca garantizar que los recursos lleguen a las personas y familias que enfrentan las condiciones más severas de vulnerabilidad.
Entre las principales problemáticas que afectan a las comunidades priorizadas destacan las sequías prolongadas, inundaciones recurrentes, pérdidas agrícolas, dificultades para acceder a servicios de salud, escasez de agua potable, violencia y fenómenos relacionados con la movilidad humana, incluyendo desplazamiento interno y migración.
Estas condiciones han generado importantes brechas sociales y económicas que afectan especialmente a niños, mujeres, adultos mayores y personas con discapacidad.
Entre ellos se encuentran la seguridad alimentaria, mediante la entrega de asistencia alimentaria y apoyo a medios de vida; el fortalecimiento de servicios de salud; programas de agua, saneamiento e higiene (WASH); protección para personas en situación de riesgo; y apoyo a la gestión de albergues para poblaciones desplazadas o afectadas por emergencias.
El Coordinador Residente de Naciones Unidas en Honduras, Alejandro Álvarez, destacó la importancia del financiamiento recibido y aseguró que permitirá ampliar significativamente la capacidad de respuesta en los territorios más golpeados por las crisis humanitarias.
“Este financiamiento nos permite impulsar una respuesta humanitaria concreta en los territorios donde las necesidades son más urgentes. Se trata de un esfuerzo coordinado que busca llegar de manera oportuna a quienes más lo necesitan”, expresó el funcionario.
Naciones Unidas también subrayó que estas acciones complementan los esfuerzos que realiza el Gobierno de Honduras para atender a las poblaciones vulnerables y fortalecer la capacidad institucional de respuesta frente a emergencias.
Asimismo, la organización recordó que actualmente también se desarrolla una estrategia de acción anticipatoria ante la sequía, respaldada con cuatro millones de dólares provenientes del Fondo Central para la Acción en Casos de Emergencia (CERF).
