Dem who sued to remove Trump’s name from Kennedy Center now says venue becoming ‘lifeless husk’ in fresh fight

Those in charge at the Kennedy Center have been accused by Rep. Joyce Beatty, D-Ohio, of purposely allowing the Washington, D.C., venue to languish into a «lifeless husk» by not resuming regular shows and programming.
Beatty, an ex officio board member of the Kennedy Center, initially filed the lawsuit against President Donald Trump in December 2025, when the board decided to install signage displaying his name alongside Kennedy’s on the building.
According to a Friday court filing, Beatty’s legal team argued that the current board, with Trump as chairman, is in violation of a May court order by «refusing to take any steps to maintain the Center’s operations, and will effectively close the Center as a performing arts venue come July 5, 2026.»
«They plan to turn the Kennedy Center into a lifeless husk,» Beatty’s lawyers wrote.

Lawyers for the Kennedy Center responded by saying: «The Court’s order did not affirmatively require the Board to reschedule programming that had previously been cancelled or to seek new programming.»
Fox News Digital reached out to the Kennedy Center and the White House for additional comment.
The order from U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper prevented the Kennedy Center from initiating its planned two-year closure for renovations. Cooper also ordered Trump’s name be taken off the building, which happened last weekend.
Cooper’s 94-page order last month did not explicitly say that shows must immediately resume, given that there are «at least some plans to restart rehearsals, performances and educational programming.»

He did say that the board «bears an affirmative duty to carry out the Center’s programming and maintain a memorial to President Kennedy. It may not simply stop putting on shows altogether.»

The Kennedy Center said its management would begin presenting recommendations for plans to reopen.
The venue’s lawyers said the board is considering several options, including a full closure with no programming, a partial closure that would keep some areas open to the public and allow performances in unaffected spaces, and a phased repair plan that would revive a full programming schedule.
A vote on these options, which they say have not been finalized, will be held in mid-July, Kennedy Center lawyers said.

The battle over the Kennedy Center began in February 2025, shortly after Trump was inaugurated for a second time as president. He replaced several trustees on the board, while also appointing himself a trustee.
The new Trump-allied board then elected him chair, enabling him to fire the previous president of the center, Deborah Rutter. In a speech in May 2025, he claimed that under Rutter’s leadership, the board «wasted millions and millions of dollars and handed us a budget deficit of $26 million.»

«In addition, the programming was out of control with rampant political propaganda, DEI, and inappropriate shows. We had some very inappropriate shows, to put it—I think, to put it very nicely,» Trump added.
Also in May 2025, the new board stripped all 23 ex officio members of voting rights. Members of this category include notable Democrats, such as Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, as well as Trump administration officials — Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Education Secretary Linda McMahon among them.

In February of this year, Trump announced the two-year closure on Truth Social, which was later blocked as a result of Beatty’s lawsuit.
The saga culminated on June 13, when workers began removing Trump’s name from the Kennedy Center. The sign previously read «The Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Center For The Performing Arts.»

Pope Leo XIV used a visit Saturday honoring St. Frances Xavier Cabrini, the first American saint and patron saint of immigrants, to deliver his latest appeal on behalf of them, asking Catholics to look to her example at a time when migration remains one of the defining issues of his emerging papacy.
The remarks came as Leo continues to make migration a central focus of his public ministry, a position that has sparked months of public friction with President Donald Trump over immigration and foreign policy.
«What could be more relevant today than a missionary charism dedicated to serving migrants?» Leo said during an evening prayer service in Sant’Angelo Lodigiano, the northern Italian town where Cabrini was born.
The American-born pope prayed at Cabrini’s tomb and urged young Catholics to learn from the saint’s life of serving immigrants, many of whom had left their homelands in search of better opportunities.

But Leo also invoked his predecessor, Pope Francis, whose own papacy was defined in part by calls to welcome migrants.
«Let us ask ourselves: if Mother Francesca were alive today, what would her missionary spirit tell her?» Leo said. «And what would a pope like Francis — who, as the son of Italian immigrants, made service to migrants one of the key priorities of his pontificate — ask of her?»
The comments are the latest in a series of migration-focused appearances that have helped define Leo’s first year as pope.

Last week, Leo traveled to Spain’s Canary Islands, a major destination for migrants departing West Africa, where he met migrants and called for greater efforts to welcome and integrate people fleeing hardship and conflict.
During that trip, Leo urged world leaders to create «legal and safe pathways» for migration and warned against reducing migrants to statistics.
Leo’s migration advocacy has frequently drawn criticism from Trump, who has accused the pontiff of venturing into politics and sharply disagreed with some of his comments on immigration and foreign affairs.
The public disagreements have become one of the most closely watched relationships between the Vatican and Washington during Leo’s papacy.

Earlier this year, Reuters reported that Secretary of State Marco Rubio was expected to meet with Vatican officials and Italian leaders during a period of heightened tensions between the Holy See and the Trump administration.
Leo has rejected suggestions that his remarks are political attacks, arguing instead that his appeals stem from Catholic teaching on human dignity, peace and care for vulnerable people.
Saturday’s visit centered on Cabrini, who became a naturalized U.S. citizen and spent decades serving Italian immigrants through schools, hospitals and orphanages before her death in Chicago in 1917.

The Vatican has also announced that Leo will travel to the Italian island of Lampedusa on July 4, a date likely to draw attention in the United States given the pope’s American roots.

Lampedusa has become one of Europe’s most recognizable migration flashpoints because of the thousands of migrants who attempt dangerous crossings from North Africa each year. The island also carries symbolic importance within the Catholic Church because it was the destination of Pope Francis’ first trip outside Rome after becoming pope in 2013.

Counterterrorism officials investigating after suspect goes on rampage in alleged hate attack: report

Counterterrorism officials are investigating after a suspect went on a rampage in Scotland, leaving five men injured.
The attacks, which are believed to have been anti-Muslim, began near a mosque in Edinburgh where two men were injured just before 9 p.m. Friday, officials said, according to BBC News.
The suspect, who is a 36-year-old Scottish man, also allegedly attacked three other men in another part of the city.
None of the victims, who range in age from 22 to 39, have life-threatening injuries. Three of the victims were taken to the hospital.

The suspect also allegedly attacked a car at a gas station, which was found with its windows smashed out and an axe inside, and he was seen pushing down shelves inside the station’s mart, BBC News reported.
He was also caught on surveillance video allegedly on the attack outside a pizzeria with a weapon, the outlet reported, adding that social media videos show havoc in other areas of the city as well.
«Officers responded to multiple reports of a fast-moving sequence of events across Edinburgh before arresting a man and public safety was our priority,» Police Scotland said in a statement.

The man was taken into custody around 9:30 p.m. local time and he remains there.
«This was a shocking attack and my first thoughts are with those who were injured and most directly affected,» Assistant Chief Constable Catriona Paton said.

She added, «I want to send a clear message of support to all our communities that there is no place for racism or faith-based hate in a Scotland which is at its best when we stand together.»
The suspect allegedly told police when he was caught that he was «protecting the country,» BBC News reported.
«Extensive work is ongoing to establish all the circumstances,» Paton said. «We are being supported by Counter Terrorism Policing and working under the direction of the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service.

The Muslim Council of Britain condemned the attack, saying the community is «rightly nervous and worried.»

«This incident comes not long after racist pogroms on the streets of Belfast that targeted minority families, and is a direct consequence of political rhetoric that demonises entire communities,» the council added. «To our community: stay vigilant, look out for one another, and please report any Islamophobic hate crimes to the police.

Costa Rica: El Instituto Meteorológico Nacional advierte un fin de semana con más lluvias por la Onda Tropical 14
Costa Rica enfrenta este fin de semana un aumento de las lluvias por la cercanía de la Onda Tropical #14 y la persistencia de la Zona de Convergencia Intertropical, un escenario que eleva el riesgo de inundaciones, saturación de alcantarillado y tormentas eléctricas en varias regiones del país.
El pronóstico del Instituto Meteorológico Nacional indica que durante la tarde del domingo la inestabilidad asociada al sistema podría reforzar las precipitaciones en el Pacífico, el Valle Central y las montañas del Caribe, con acumulados de 10 a 40 mm en seis horas y máximos puntuales de hasta 80 mm. En el Caribe marítimo, sectores costeros del Caribe y la Zona Norte, para la madrugada y la mañana del domingo se estiman entre 20 y 50 mm en 12 horas.
Según el Instituto Meteorológico Nacional CR, las zonas con mayor probabilidad de lluvias este fin de semana son la Zona Norte, el Caribe, las montañas cercanas al Valle Central y áreas costeras del Pacífico. La Comisión Nacional de Emergencias pidió a la población mantenerse atenta a la información oficial y tomar previsiones ante el aumento esperado de las precipitaciones.
En su diagnóstico de las 16:15 del 20 de junio de 2026, el IMN reportó que la Zona de Convergencia Intertropical se mantenía cerca del territorio nacional y favorecía aguaceros con tormenta eléctrica en el centro y oeste del Valle Central, además de las montañas de la Zona Norte. En esas regiones se registraron acumulados de cinco a 30 mm en las tres horas previas, con máximos localizados de 47 mm en Santa Lucía y 43 mm en San Joaquín, ambos en Heredia.
La institución también informó lluvias con tormenta eléctrica de forma localizada en regiones montañosas del Caribe y del Pacífico Central, el sur del Pacífico Norte, en las cercanías de Orotina, y el Pacífico Sur. En esos puntos, los acumulados no superaban los 15 mm en las seis horas previas.
El organismo detalló además que la Onda Tropical #14 se localizaba sobre los 82°O. Para el resto de la tarde de este sábado, previó actividad lluviosa dispersa cerca del eje montañoso central, con incidencia en el Pacífico Central y Sur, la Zona Norte, el Valle Central y, en menor medida, el Caribe.
El pronóstico añade que esa actividad tendería a disminuir gradualmente en intensidad y cobertura conforme avanzara la tarde. Aun así, se estimaron acumulados de 10 a 30 mm en períodos de seis horas, con máximos puntuales de 40 a 50 mm en el Valle Central y las montañas de la Zona Norte.
El IMN prevé el ingreso de la onda tropical durante la madrugada del domingo. Esa condición favorecerá lluvias y aguaceros en la región marítima del Caribe durante la madrugada y la mañana, con posibilidad de extensión hacia sectores costeros caribeños y la Zona Norte.
Durante la tarde del domingo, la inestabilidad vinculada al paso de la OT#14 reforzará las precipitaciones en las regiones del Pacífico, el Valle Central y las montañas del Caribe. El instituto anticipa aguaceros acompañados de tormenta eléctrica y señala que las lluvias en el Pacífico podrían prolongarse hasta las primeras horas de la noche.
La advertencia oficial pone atención especial en el Pacífico Sur por los niveles de saturación presentes en los suelos. También recomienda precaución en zonas urbanas por la posible saturación de los sistemas de alcantarillado.
Entre las medidas de prevención, el instituto aconseja evitar sectores propensos a inundaciones por posible saturación de quebradas o desagües. También pide extremar cuidados durante tormentas eléctricas o ante ráfagas fuertes cerca de nubes de tormenta, porque podrían caer ramas, tendido eléctrico u otros objetos.
De acuerdo con el IMN, esas ráfagas pueden alcanzar hasta 80 km/h en casos aislados. La institución pidió seguir la información por sus canales oficiales en X, Facebook, su sitio web y su canal de WhatsApp.
