Family member of lawyer who coined ‘genocide’ seeks to strip name from group accusing Israel of atrocity

A family member of Raphael Lemkin, a Jewish lawyer who escaped Europe during World War II and coined the term «genocide,» is in a fight to have his name removed from a Pennsylvania nonprofit organization that accuses Israel of the exact term he came up with.
The Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention and Human Security has «warned of genocide in Gaza since Oct. 13, 2023,» less than a week after Hamas terror attacks killed about 1,200 and resulted in the capture of 251 hostages in 2023.
On Oct. 28, 2023, the institute issued a «statement of mourning for the Gazans and the world,» saying that «these two major military powers [the U.S. and Israel] are committing genocide in Gaza only weeks after actively enabling genocide against another besieged people: the Armenians of Artsakh.» It also warned that «if the world allows these two powers to continue to act with this level of impunity, genocide will become the normative policy of both dictatorships and the world’s so-called democracies alike.»

The man calling for the change is Joseph Lemkin — whose father was Raphael’s cousin — and the sole survivor after his family of six was killed during the Holocaust. Joseph told Fox News Digital that growing up the son of a Holocaust survivor meant being followed by «a black cloud» that colored his entire life.
In one example, he explained that when the families at his Jewish day school placed ads during an annual banquet to celebrate their successes, his father wrote a yearly commemoration of the memories of his more than 40 family members who died during the Holocaust, including his parents and brother killed at Auschwitz and two brothers who died after joining underground resistance groups.
He said his father raised funds for the impoverished Raphael’s funeral when he died in 1959, and worked until weeks before his death to fundraise for the betterment of his fellow Jewish Americans.
Joseph’s experience as the child of a Holocaust survivor came to mind again when his teenage son showed him a social media post from the Lemkin Institute using the family name to accuse Israel of genocide.
«Seeing the impact and how my son came across it made me really more concerned about it,» Lemkin said.

In an effort to keep the family name from being «turned on its head,» he said he has worked with the European Jewish Association (EJA) to submit a letter of complaint to the office of Democratic Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and to Pennsylvania’s Department of State’s Bureau of Corporations and Charitable Organizations. In June, Lemkin and his team also sent out letters referencing their concerns to other leaders in Pennsylvania.
In response to a request from Shapiro’s office for additional information, Lemkin and the EJA submitted a 32-page comprehensive legal submission and statement of facts and a 58-page evidentiary appendix in April 2025. He said he believes that an investigation has been opened into the complaint.
Pennsylvania’s Department of State spokesman, Geoff Morrow, told Fox News Digital «the Department [of State] cannot confirm or deny whether any organization has had a complaint filed against it or is under investigation.»
Gov. Shapiro’s office did not respond to requests for comment from Fox News Digital.

In an Oct. 13, 2025, press release responding to an op-ed, the Lemkin Institute stated, «It is very hard to imagine that Raphael Lemkin would not have seen the genocidal dynamics of the present conflict early on, given his definition of the term and his historical studies. We share Raphael Lemkin’s belief in the need for a Jewish national home, but that has not meant that we are unable to see the genocide before our eyes.»
The same press release also noted, «Joseph Lemkin does not speak for the entire Lemkin family, nor does he officially represent a Lemkin estate. We have Lemkin family members on our side who reached out to us after October 7, 2023. Peter Lemkin, in whose childhood home Raphael Lemkin was a frequent visitor, has been particularly supportive, offering encouragement, sharing insights into Lemkin’s work, and informing us of his family’s close collaboration in the effort to get the Genocide Convention ratified by states.»
In a statement to Fox News Digital, the institute again questioned Joseph’s representation of Raphael, stating in part, «Over the years, members of the Lemkin family have reached out to express their support for our work. Joseph Lemkin has expressed his disagreement with our work. There is no legal battle between the Lemkin Institute and the Lemkin family.»
Peter Lemkin did not respond to Fox News Digital’s requests for comment. Nor did another family member identified to Fox News Digital by the institute as being supportive of its work.
The statement to Fox News Digital continued, «The Institute was founded in 2016/2017. In 2021, it was renamed to honor the life and work of Raphael Lemkin, whose research and moral commitments, reflected not only in the 1948 Genocide Convention but also in the many case studies he completed before his untimely death at age 59, have deeply influenced the work of the Institute’s founders. Since Raphael Lemkin died without heirs or an estate, there was no official representative for the Lemkin family to contact for permission,» it stated.

The statement also noted, «The Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention is an all-volunteer organization founded to fill the gaps in genocide prevention that co-founders Dr. Elisa von Joeden-Forgey and Dr. Irene Massimino observed during several visits to Northern Iraq in 2016 and 2017, when they met with religious leaders, government officials, and survivors of ISIS genocide, including Yezidi, Christians, Shabak-Shia, Kakay and other religious, national, and ethnic minorities.»
It continued, «This includes, of course, security for the Jewish people, who continue to be the targets of one of the oldest and most lethal global genocidal ideologies — antisemitism. This also includes Palestinians, Darfuris, Armenians, Artsakhsis, Rohingya, Ukrainians, Uighurs, Amhara, trans people, Yezidis, many Christian populations, many Muslim populations, Somalilanders, Kurds, the Karakalpak, many Black and Native communities in the Western Hemisphere, and far too many other groups to mention here. Our world is unfortunately awash in genocide and it benefits all humanity for all of us to be involved in preventing the crime.»

The institute utilized the October 2025 press release to start a fundraising campaign «to cover urgent legal fees, hire a full-time administrator, and ensure the survival of the Lemkin Institute.» They stated that «the attempt to discredit us or to shut down our work is part of a wider effort to silence opposition to Israel’s genocide in the USA. But we will not allow our work to be smeared, or our voices to be silenced.»
Israeli civil rights attorney and president of the Shurat HaDin Law Center, Nitsana Darshan-Leitner, who is not party to the dispute, told Fox News Digital, «The real question is not simply ‘standing,’ but whether the Institute has a lawful right to use Raphael Lemkin’s name in a manner that implies his endorsement, his family’s authorization, or fidelity to his beliefs. The Institute apparently never received permission from Lemkin, his estate, or an authorized representative when it appropriated the name. While using a deceased scholar’s name is not automatically unlawful, it becomes legally actionable when it misleads donors and the public, creates a false impression of endorsement, constitutes deceptive charitable solicitation, or appropriates the reputation and goodwill attached to that individual’s identity.»

Commenting recently on the growing threat of antisemitism worldwide after the Hamas attacks of Oct. 7, 2023, renowned historian Sir Simon Schama called accusations that Israel has committed genocide in Gaza a «blood libel» in his keynote address at the Holocaust Educational Trust on Sept. 7. Schama stated, «We, the victims of the greatest genocide the world has ever seen, are being called perpetrators of genocide.»
The Lemkin Institute has published multiple reports on the Israel-Gaza war that allege genocide by Israel. On May 28, 2024, they wrote, «Even if there were legitimate doubts about Israel’s genocide, there is no doubt that Israel is committing atrocity crimes of the most barbaric kind. Israel must be stopped.»
The institute also said it is «disgusted by Western leaders, especially in the USA, Germany, and the U.K. They have demonstrated not only that they don’t care one bit about genocide prevention and human rights, but also that they are willing to allow an ally to commit atrocity crimes while they offer material and diplomatic support.» The Lemkin Institute suggested that «they should also be put on trial.»

La ONU documentó casi 4,800 detenciones arbitrarias y muertes bajo custodia estatal en Nicaragua
Un informe de la Oficina del Alto Comisionado de las Naciones Unidas para los Derechos Humanos (ACNUDH) documentó un patrón sistemático de violaciones a las garantías fundamentales perpetrado por el régimen de Nicaragua, encabezado por Daniel Ortega y Rosario Murillo, que incluye 4,796 detenciones arbitrarias registradas desde 2018, junto con casos confirmados de desaparición forzada y muertes ocurridas durante la privación de libertad.
El documento oficial detalla cómo el aparato estatal nicaragüense ha mantenido un uso continuado y prolongado de la privación de libertad como un instrumento de represión contra opositores reales o percibidos.
Las cifras recopiladas por organizaciones de la sociedad civil y sistematizadas por las Naciones Unidas revelan que, entre las 4,796 personas arrestadas arbitrariamente desde el estallido social de 2018, 3,861 corresponden a hombres y 935 a mujeres, grupo que incluye a 13 mujeres trans.
Al 15 de junio de 2026, el reporte confirmó que al menos 46 personas continuaban privadas de libertad por motivos políticos. La gran mayoría de estos ciudadanos permanecía recluida antes del período analizado por la ONU, bajo dinámicas de detención prolongada que vulneran los estándares internacionales. En al menos tres casos, las víctimas continuaban en prisión a pesar de haber cumplido la totalidad de sus condenas dictadas por el sistema judicial local.
Entre estos casos destaca el de Jaime Enrique Navarrete Blandón, un ciudadano encarcelado desde 2019 que, según las denuncias recogidas por el organismo internacional, sufrió torturas sistemáticas en prisión y completó formalmente su sentencia en 2023 sin ser puesto en libertad por las autoridades del régimen de Nicaragua.
El informe de la ONU resalta que la represión evolucionó desde las capturas masivas registradas en 2018 hacia una operatividad selectiva. Además, las violaciones al debido proceso afectaron a funcionarios del propio Estado y simpatizantes del partido de gobierno, de los cuales al menos 55 sufrieron arrestos arbitrarios en el período evaluado.
La desaparición forzada se consolida como una práctica sistemática del aparato estatal
La investigación realizada por la ACNUDH identificó que, en al menos 29 de los 35 casos individuales de detención arbitraria analizados a profundidad por la oficina, las víctimas sufrieron desaparición forzada mediante el ocultamiento deliberado de su paradero y su suerte.
Al cierre del informe, las autoridades de la ONU mantenían abiertos al menos ocho expedientes de desaparición forzada, con la advertencia de que la cifra real puede ser sustancialmente mayor debido al temor a represalias que frena las denuncias de los familiares en la nación centroamericana.
Las detenciones se caracterizaron por la ausencia de órdenes judiciales, la falta de información inmediata sobre los cargos imputados y la privación del derecho a contar con un abogado de elección.
En múltiples procesos penales, agentes de la Policía Nacional figuraron como los únicos testigos presentados por la fiscalía, mientras que las audiencias se celebraron a puerta cerrada o de forma remota bajo deficientes condiciones técnicas.
Registraron múltiples fallecimientos de prisioneros políticos bajo la custodia del Gobierno
Durante el período evaluado por las Naciones Unidas, se registró un incremento en las muertes de prisioneros políticos durante su custodia estatal, con al menos cuatro casos plenamente documentados. Todos los fallecidos eran hombres y tres de ellos correspondían a personas de edad avanzada que padecían afecciones médicas graves.
Uno de los fallecimientos documentados corresponde al líder indígena miskitu Brooklyn Rivera, quien murió bajo la custodia del régimen nicaragüense tras ser víctima de desaparición forzada e incommunicación.
Rivera había sido objeto de represalias gubernamentales, entre otras razones, por mantener cooperación activa con los mecanismos de las Naciones Unidas. Tras su deceso, sus familiares enfrentaron severos obstáculos por parte de las fuerzas de seguridad para organizar las exequias según sus tradiciones culturales y religiosas.
Las precarias condiciones de los centros de reclusión contribuyeron al deterioro fatal de la salud de los prisioneros. La ACNUDH constató que los prisioneros recibieron suministro de agua contaminada para consumo y aseo personal, celdas contiguas a letrinas y la denegación sistemática de asistencia médica especializada.

Trump’s $5K checks could join stack of past unfulfilled promises, former Congress budget chief warns
President Donald Trump’s latest cash promise to Americans is unlikely to come to fruition, just like others before it, an economist and former congressional budget hawk told Digital.
«So the president has promised a lot of checks, the most recent being $5,000 to every American if Republicans hold on to the House and Senate. We ever going to see these? Well, I don’t think so,» said Douglas Holz-Eakin, president of fiscal policy think tank American Action Forum.
Holz-Eakin previously served as the director of the Congressional Budget Office and as the director of domestic and economic policy for late Republican Sen. John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign.

«The DOGE checks were never realistic because DOGE was never going to save that much money,» said Holz-Eakin in reference to the Elon Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency’s sweeping layoffs and budget cuts to federal agencies.
He continued: «And the tariff checks were never that realistic because [Trump] didn’t have the authority to issue the checks, and that’s actually true of all of these promises.»
Holz-Eakin also mentioned the Trump administration’s recently proposed plan to give $9,000 checks to stay-at-home mothers likely won’t come through either.
«Trying to get money to stay at home moms for childcare, there’s a route to that, but it’s gonna be tough … we’ll see if they actually pull it off,» he said. «So, I would be skeptical that any of these checks are gonna be in your mailbox very soon.»
The internationally-known economist likened the Trump administration’s fiscal policy to that of former President Joe Biden’s Democratic administration.
«I think we’ve seen two successive administrations get themselves in the following position: inflation is too high and wages aren’t keeping up with it. Well, that’s failing at the American dream,» Holz-Eakin explained.
THE FED JUST THREW A WRENCH IN TRUMP’S MIDTERM ECONOMIC MESSAGE
He said that getting inflation under control was the first step in restoring order, as well as being «utterly supportive» of the Federal Reserve, which Holz-Eakin says is working to achieve that goal.
The Fed hiked interest rates Wednesday for the first time in three years, and signaled that more rate increases could be coming. This comes despite Trump’s push to have the world’s most powerful central bank lower interest rates to lessen the monthly burden on Americans seeking home and auto loans.
«Inflation remains elevated,» the Federal Open Market Committee said in a post-meeting statement. «Today’s policy action will support a timelier return to the Committee’s 2 percent goal. The Committee will deliver price stability.»
«You need to have, I think, a more vibrant economy, and this economy is doing okay, but it’s putting up with a lot of headwinds,» said Holz-Eakin.
He named specific Trump administration policy decisions he says are to blame for the lackluster economy, which has burdened the middle class as grocery prices continue to rise.
«The first headwinds were tariffs, second headwinds were the oil prices and fight with Iran, and we need to get past those battles, and let the economy just go, and … that would be a better environment for the families,» he told Digital.

As for overall fiscal policy, Holz-Eakin says he’s worried that the country is going in the wrong direction when it comes to economic and fiscal policy.
«I’m a former director of the Congressional Budget Office. I have to every day get up and look at the books and wonder, ‘how’s this going to add up?’» he said. «And right now it doesn’t add up.»
«We’re $41 trillion in debt. The deficit is $2 trillion every year and it’s getting larger. You can’t just keep putting people on the on government programs. It won’t add up.»
He proposed a fix — reverting to «old-school conservative» politics.
«I’d like to see a bit of a U-turn that got the debt under control, didn’t spend quite so much money, and got through this without having to raise our taxes. So, that sounds like an old-school conservative plan to me, but that’s not what we’re seeing right now.»
Digital reached out to the White House for comment on Trump’s economic promises, but did not hear back at time of publication.

Interés por el sector tecnológico ya se refleja en las solicitudes que recibe el régimen de empresas multinacionales en Panamá
Panamá apunta a convertirse en plataforma regional de innovación mediante una mayor conexión entre empresas multinacionales, universidades, organismos públicos y emprendimientos locales.
Esa fue una de las proyecciones planteadas durante un foro que reunió a representantes empresariales, autoridades, académicos y organismos multilaterales.
Panamá busca aprovechar el avance de la inteligencia artificial mediante la formación de talento, una adopción tecnológica con criterios de gobierno y gestión de riesgos, y acuerdos entre el Estado, las empresas y la academia.
La meta expuesta durante el foro es fortalecer la competitividad nacional y ampliar la presencia del país en actividades regionales de innovación y servicios globales.
Jeannette Díaz Granados, directora general de Sedes de Empresas Multinacionales del Ministerio de Comercio e Industrias, señaló que el interés de las compañías por el sector tecnológico ya se refleja en las solicitudes que recibe el régimen.
“En el transcurso de este año más del 20% de las empresas aplicantes al régimen están en el área de tecnología”, explicó.
La funcionaria añadió que los informes anuales muestran que el 42% de las empresas del Régimen SEM invierte en tecnología.
Según sostuvo, esa tendencia abre una oportunidad para los países que buscan consolidarse como centros regionales de negocios, innovación y servicios.
Díaz Granados consideró que la incorporación de estas herramientas puede favorecer a Panamá si el país acompaña el cambio con condiciones que permitan atraer y desarrollar actividades vinculadas con la economía digital.
El presidente y director ejecutivo de la Cámara de Sedes de Empresas Multinacionales (Casem), Tony Roldán, planteó que el desafío requiere avances paralelos en capacidades profesionales, uso empresarial de la tecnología y cooperación institucional.
“La inteligencia artificial está cambiando la forma en que las empresas innovan, operan y generan valor”, afirmó Roldán.
El directivo sostuvo que Panamá puede beneficiarse de esta transformación si coordina los esfuerzos de los distintos sectores. Para Casem, el foro permitió acercar la experiencia de las multinacionales a una agenda nacional orientada a la innovación.
Uno de los debates centrales se concentró en la preparación de Panamá ante la expansión de la inteligencia artificial y otras tecnologías avanzadas.
Representantes del Gobierno, el sector privado y organismos multilaterales revisaron prioridades y posibles alianzas para impulsar estas herramientas, reforzar las capacidades profesionales y acelerar procesos de innovación.
La conversación incorporó información del informe multidimensional RAM, citado durante el encuentro como parte del análisis sobre la preparación nacional.
La directora de Innovación Empresarial de Senacyt, Gladys Bernett, presentó las estrategias e iniciativas que desarrolla Panamá en ciencia, tecnología e innovación.
Vinculó esa agenda con el 34° aniversario de la institución y afirmó que el país debe aprovechar los recursos y la infraestructura ya disponibles para avanzar hacia nuevos programas relacionados con inteligencia artificial, semiconductores y microelectrónica.
Bernett propuso que Panamá trascienda la creación de soluciones científico-tecnológicas aisladas y fortalezca un ecosistema capaz de atraer proyectos empresariales y de innovación.
La directora planteó la posibilidad de posicionar al país como espacio de prototipado y de soft landing para empresas sudamericanas que busquen ingresar al mercado norteamericano, así como para compañías de Estados Unidos interesadas en expandirse hacia Sudamérica.
Bernett pidió a las compañías multinacionales presentes en Panamá que trabajen junto con el sector académico y científico para financiar iniciativas de innovación abierta.
La propuesta incluyó el respaldo a ideatones y hackatones, además de la participación de profesionales de las empresas como mentores de emprendimientos locales que buscan crecer hacia mercados de mayor escala.
La funcionaria también convocó a las empresas a integrarse como aliadas de “Panamá Incuba 2026”, una convocatoria dirigida a apoyar el desarrollo de proyectos empresariales emergentes.
Para Casem, las multinacionales cumplen una función vinculada con la transferencia de conocimientos, tecnología y capacidades. El foro buscó identificar qué condiciones necesita Panamá para convertir la transformación tecnológica en una oportunidad de crecimiento económico y desarrollo sostenible.
