Senate GOP launches all-night vote-a-rama to fund ICE, Border Patrol through end of Trump’s term

Senate Republicans are inching closer to funding federal immigration operations for years to come, but first they have to plow through a marathon of votes Democrats plan to weaponize against them.
The Senate officially launched a «vote-a-rama» for Republicans’ budget resolution, the blueprint guiding the GOP’s push to fund Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol for the remainder of President Donald Trump’s presidency.
But, first, lawmakers must grind through amendment after amendment from Senate Democrats — and some Republicans — before voting to adopt the resolution.

Some Republicans unhappy with the limited scope of the GOP’s latest budget reconciliation push have vowed to force votes on amendments addressing economic issues and a provision set to expire in July that prohibits Medicaid funding from going to abortion providers.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., said he would not block amendments from his own party from reaching the floor.
«We’ll see what our colleagues come up with, but we’re talking to them and their offices about strategy and the best way to move forward in order to ultimately succeed — and that is to get it passed in both houses and signed [into law],» Thune said.

But Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and his caucus intend to use the opportunity to attack Republicans on several issues, including the war in Iran, affordability and other concerns tied to Trump’s agenda.
Schumer said Democrats plan to «show the contrast» between the parties over Republicans’ reconciliation plans, which they intend to use to inject tens of billions of dollars into ICE and Border Patrol over the next 3½ years.
«We are for reducing costs for the American people — whether it’s housing, healthcare, electric bills, groceries or childcare,» Schumer said Wednesday. «And they are funding a rogue police force that is not even popular with the American people. And we’re going to keep at it.»

Senate Democrats have teed up several amendments, including proposals aimed at forcing rebates for small businesses affected by Trump’s tariffs, addressing rising grocery costs and renewing their push to extend the long-expired Obamacare enhanced premium tax credits, a fight from last year that led to the longest full government shutdown in history.
Republicans turned to reconciliation after months of avoiding the maneuver after congressional Democrats refused to fund ICE and Customs and Border Protection without stricter immigration enforcement reforms, including warrant requirements and rules requiring agents to remove their masks.
Senate Republicans unveiled their budget resolution Tuesday in a bid to meet Trump’s June 1 deadline to have the full package on his desk.

The measure directs the Senate Judiciary Committee and the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee to each craft legislation providing $70 billion in funding for the agencies. Republicans are ultimately eyeing up to $80 billion for immigration enforcement.
Once the vote-a-rama ends and the budget resolution is adopted, it will head to the House. After the House adopts it, Congress will begin the process of crafting a reconciliation package without Democratic input.

A former Mexican beauty queen was found shot to death in her Mexico City apartment, with investigators examining the possible involvement of her mother-in-law, according to local reports.
Carolina Flores Gómez, 27, was found dead inside an apartment in the Polanco neighborhood, one of the city’s most affluent areas, Reporte Índigo, a Mexico-based news outlet, reported.
Authorities said the death is being investigated as a homicide, after initial findings indicated she suffered a gunshot wound to the head. Emergency responders were called to the scene, where paramedics confirmed she showed no signs of life.
Prosecutors are investigating whether Flores Gómez’s mother-in-law, Erika María, as well as a man described in reports as her partner or husband, may have been involved in her death.

The man, identified as Alejandro, accused his mother of killing Flores Gómez, Mexican news outlet Azteca Guerrero reported.
The outlet also reported that the woman’s mother-in-law was present at the scene when the gun was fired and that authorities are looking into the timeline of when the incident was reported.

Preliminary reports cited by Mexican news outlet Diario Puntual indicate that a security guard at the building did not hear gunshots, adding uncertainty about how the crime occurred.
Authorities in Baja California, Mexico, also responded to the case, Diario Puntual reported.

Baja California Gov. Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda expressed solidarity with the victim’s family and called for the case to be clarified.
State prosecutor María Elena Andrade Ramírez also said there is coordination with Mexico City authorities to support the investigation.
Flores Gómez previously competed in beauty pageants and was crowned Miss Teen Universe Baja California in 2017.

La Secretaría de Salud de Honduras intervino las regiones sanitarias del Distrito Central, Atlántida y Choluteca tras la muerte de tres menores que habían sido vacunadas recientemente, en un hecho que ha generado preocupación entre la población y ha activado protocolos de investigación epidemiológica a nivel nacional.
La jefa del Programa Ampliado de Inmunizaciones (PAI), Odalis García, informó que se está desarrollando una investigación exhaustiva para esclarecer las causas de los fallecimientos, al tiempo que pidió a la ciudadanía mantener la calma y confiar en los procesos técnicos que se encuentran en marcha.
“Estamos haciendo toda la investigación necesaria. Aunque no lo podemos asegurar en este momento, estamos casi seguros de que las muertes no se relacionan con la calidad de las vacunas ni con la técnica de aplicación”, afirmó la funcionaria.
Los casos involucran a tres niñas de entre cuatro y seis meses de edad, quienes habían recibido dosis correspondientes al esquema nacional de vacunación, específicamente la vacuna pentavalente, la cual protege contra enfermedades como la difteria, el tétanos, la tosferina, la hepatitis B y infecciones por Haemophilus influenzae tipo b.
De acuerdo con García, las vacunas administradas cumplían con todos los estándares de calidad y fueron conservadas adecuadamente bajo condiciones seguras, siguiendo los protocolos de cadena de frío establecidos.
Asimismo, aseguró que se cuenta con la trazabilidad completa de los lotes utilizados, lo que permite dar seguimiento detallado a cada caso.
“Ya tenemos toda la trazabilidad de los lotes de vacunas. Se está haciendo la investigación clínica y estamos a la espera de los resultados de las autopsias para determinar si existe alguna relación causal con la vacunación”, explicó.
Las autoridades sanitarias han reiterado que, en muchos casos, este tipo de eventos pueden ser coincidentes con la vacunación, sin que exista una relación directa entre ambos.
En ese sentido, García enfatizó que las vacunas utilizadas en Honduras están certificadas por la Organización Mundial de la Salud, lo que garantiza su seguridad y eficacia.
“Hay eventos que coinciden en el tiempo con la vacunación, pero no son causados por las vacunas. Por eso es fundamental completar la investigación antes de emitir conclusiones”, subrayó.
La funcionaria detalló que el proceso de investigación sigue protocolos estrictos que incluyen múltiples etapas. Entre ellas, la verificación de las condiciones de almacenamiento de las vacunas, la revisión de los procedimientos de aplicación, la evaluación clínica de los casos y la realización de autopsias.
Además, se lleva a cabo lo que se conoce como “autopsia verbal”, que consiste en entrevistas con los familiares de las víctimas para recopilar información sobre el estado de salud previo de las menores, posibles síntomas y otros factores relevantes.
También se está monitoreando a otros niños que recibieron vacunas del mismo lote, con el objetivo de identificar posibles reacciones adversas. Hasta el momento, García confirmó que no se ha reportado ningún otro caso con efectos negativos, lo que refuerza la hipótesis de que las muertes podrían no estar relacionadas con la inmunización.
“Estamos vigilando a todos los niños vacunados con ese mismo lote y no hemos encontrado ninguna reacción adversa. Eso es un indicador importante dentro de la investigación”, indicó.
Una de las líneas de investigación apunta a la posibilidad de que las menores tuvieran enfermedades de base que pudieran haber contribuido a los fallecimientos. Sin embargo, las autoridades recalcaron que esta hipótesis aún no puede ser confirmada ni descartada hasta contar con los resultados de las autopsias.
En paralelo, la Sesal trabaja en conjunto con el Ministerio Público de Honduras, que ha iniciado diligencias para esclarecer los hechos desde el punto de vista legal y forense.
Por su parte, especialistas de Medicina Forense están realizando estudios técnicos para determinar las causas exactas de los decesos y establecer si existe alguna relación con las vacunas o si se trata de factores externos.
El primer caso se reportó el 11 de abril en la ciudad de La Ceiba, donde falleció una menor de seis meses identificada como Perla Rubí, pocas horas después de recibir la vacuna pentavalente.
El segundo caso ocurrió el 17 de abril en el municipio de El Corpus, donde murió otra niña de seis meses, Monserrat Rodríguez, en circunstancias similares.
El tercer fallecimiento se registró en el Distrito Central, donde una menor de cuatro meses perdió la vida tras haber sido vacunada. Este último caso terminó de encender las alertas en las autoridades sanitarias, que decidieron intervenir las regiones involucradas para profundizar en las investigaciones.
