Australia obligará a las principales compañías de gas a reservar el 20% de sus exportaciones para el consumo interno, con el fin de evitar la escasez de energía y la suba de precios ante la volatilidad de los mercados energéticos globales por la guerra en Medio Oriente.
El ministro de Energía, Chris Bowen, anunció la nueva medida del Gobierno, el cual enfrenta una fuerte demanda internacional debido a la crisis generada por el conflicto.
“Hemos estado actuando para proteger a los australianos de las crisis energéticas mundiales invirtiendo en energías renovables fiables y de propiedad estatal, y manteniendo en tierra firme una mayor cantidad del gas que necesitamos”, declaró Bowen a la prensa.
Australia es uno de los mayores exportadores mundiales de gas natural licuado (GNL), una fuente de combustible clave en Asia. Según la Asociación Asiática de Gas Natural y Energía, alrededor del 40% del GNL que consume Japón proviene de Australia. El país también es el principal proveedor de GNL para Singapur, cubriendo más del 30 % de sus necesidades.
Bowen intentó disipar inquietudes respecto a un posible impacto negativo en los socios comerciales por la nueva medida: “No modificaremos ningún contrato existente. Hemos consultado estrechamente con nuestros socios comerciales para garantizar que se entienda en todo el mundo que Australia siempre será un proveedor fiable de energía”.
La administración del primer ministro Anthony Albanese aprobará leyes para que el sistema de reservas entre en vigor a partir de julio de 2027. Australia, debido a su aislamiento geográfico y a que solo cuenta con dos refinerías de petróleo, se encuentra especialmente expuesta a interrupciones en el suministro global de combustibles.
Las principales compañías de gas australianas —Shell, Chevron y Woodside— obtuvieron grandes beneficios vendiendo GNL en el extranjero. Los críticos presionaron al gobierno para aumentar los impuestos a estas exportaciones, una propuesta que Canberra rechazó la semana pasada.
Ante la paralización de una quinta parte de los envíos mundiales de combustible por el cierre efectivo del estrecho de Ormuz por parte del régimen iraní, Australia implementó medidas para reforzar su seguridad energética. Albanese anunció el miércoles la creación de una reserva nacional de combustible de mil millones de litros.
El jefe de Gobierno afirmó que la reserva nacional de combustible de propiedad estatal reforzará el suministro a largo plazo de diésel y combustible de aviación con la medida. “Nuestra prioridad número uno sigue siendo proteger a Australia de los peores efectos de esta crisis”, aseguró Albanese.
Las medidas concretas se detallarán la próxima semana, cuando el gobierno presente su presupuesto anual. Australia era uno de los pocos miembros de la Agencia Internacional de Energía (AEI) que no contaba con una reserva nacional, recordó el ministro de Energía, Chris Bowen.
El país, geográficamente aislado y con solo dos refinerías, es especialmente vulnerable a cualquier interrupción en el suministro energético. Al igual que otras naciones de Asia y el Pacífico Sur, Australia depende en gran medida del petróleo que se transporta a través del estrecho de Ormuz, actualmente bloqueado de facto por el régimen persa desde el inicio de la guerra en febrero.

Las placas del artista alemán Gunter Demnig convierten las aceras de Berlín en monumentos del Holocausto
El artista Gunter Demnig colocó con cuidado una placa conmemorativa del Holocausto hecha de latón, del tamaño de la palma de una mano, en la acera de una concurrida esquina de Berlín. Decía: “Johanna Berger, nacida en 1893, vivió aquí; deportada el 17 de noviembre de 1941, asesinada el 25 de noviembre de 1941”.
Después de que Demnig retiró la arena de la piedra conmemorativa de Berger y de las de su esposo y sus dos hijos, una docena de familiares se reunió alrededor de las cuatro placas, que en alemán se llaman Stolpersteine, o “adoquines de tropiezo”. Dejaron rosas blancas y recitaron el Kadish, la oración judía por los muertos, mientras el tráfico rugía en un lluvioso día de primavera.
Demnig instaló la primera placa en la capital alemana hace tres décadas. A estas alturas, se pueden encontrar más de 11.000 de sus adoquines conmemorativos por toda la ciudad. Pero el monumento descentralizado del Holocausto de Demnig va mucho más allá: el artista y sus equipos de simpatizantes han colocado 126.000 placas en Alemania y en otros 31 países europeos. La primera se instaló en 1992 en la ciudad de Colonia, en el oeste de Alemania.
De una manera singular, los brillantes cuadrados de latón incrustados en el pavimento hacen que los transeúntes se detengan e interrumpan por un momento su vida cotidiana al agacharse para leer los nombres de quienes perecieron. A menudo se ve a niños pequeños examinando de cerca los Stolpersteine y exigiendo respuestas a sus padres.
“Mi idea básica detrás de esto era que, en cualquier lugar de Europa donde la Wehrmacht alemana, las SS, la Gestapo y sus colaboradores locales cometieron asesinatos o llevaron a cabo deportaciones, deberían colocarse allí piedras simbólicas”, explicó el artista alemán, de 78 años, en una entrevista con The Associated Press el miércoles.
Con frecuencia, familiares judíos viajan desde todas partes del mundo para asistir a las ceremonias de colocación de las piedras, porque muchas de las víctimas fueron gaseadas en los campos de concentración nazis y estas piedras conmemorativas son lo más parecido a una tumba o un entierro.
“Los Stolpersteine son una especie de sustituto de las lápidas que faltan”, comentó Michael Tischler tras la ceremonia del miércoles. El berlinés de 72 años es sobrino nieto de Berger, quien pereció en el Holocausto, al igual que varios otros miembros de la familia de Tischler.
“Creo que esto lleva la historia familiar a una cierta conclusión, o al menos a una provisional”, expresó Tischler.
Las piedras conmemorativas no solo brindan consuelo a las familias de las víctimas, sino que también han creado una especie de movimiento de base que reúne a iniciativas vecinales, escuelas o comunidades religiosas para investigar la historia de su ciudad.
Juntos, mayores y jóvenes revisan archivos y consultan listas antiguas de residentes para averiguar si algún judío u otras personas perseguidas durante el Tercer Reich —como comunistas, homosexuales o romaníes— solían vivir en las calles o incluso en las viviendas donde hoy viven ellos.
Una vez que pueden confirmar el antiguo lugar de residencia de una víctima, organizan una ceremonia de colocación de la piedra y se aseguran de pulir periódicamente la placa de latón para que no pierda su brillo.
El miércoles, varios estudiantes de 10º grado de la Friedrich-Bergius-Schule asistieron a otra ceremonia de colocación de piedras en Berlín, en la Stierstraße, donde antes vivían muchos judíos. Las tres nuevas piedras de Demnig para la familia Krein —Michael, su esposa Maria y su hija Dalila— elevaron a 62 el número de Stolpersteine en esta calle.
Mientras que Maria y Dalila lograron escapar a Estados Unidos y al territorio palestino controlado por los británicos, respectivamente, Michael, músico, murió en Berlín en 1940 como trabajador forzado bajo el régimen nazi.
La estudiante de secundaria Sibilla Ehrlich, de 16 años, observó cómo un grupo de violinistas interpretaba melodías solemnes y algunos vecinos ancianos hablaban sobre las vidas de los tres judíos bajo la dictadura nazi.
“Es simplemente tan horrible, todo este odio hacia los demás”, dijo. “No dejo de pensar: ¿y si hubiera sido mi familia?”.
Antes del Holocausto, Berlín tenía la mayor comunidad judía de Alemania. En 1933, el año en que los nazis llegaron al poder, alrededor de 160.500 judíos vivían en Berlín. Para cuando terminó la Segunda Guerra Mundial y la Alemania nazi se rindió el 8 de mayo de 1945, su número se había reducido a unos 7.000 debido a la emigración y el exterminio.
En total, alrededor de 6 millones de judíos europeos y otras personas fueron asesinados en el Holocausto.
Mientras Alemania conmemora el viernes la liberación de los nazis por parte de los Aliados hace 81 años, muchas personas en Alemania temen que las lecciones del Holocausto puedan olvidarse, ya que la extrema derecha vuelve a ganar influencia rápidamente en Alemania.
Tischler también se preocupa por el futuro de su país en tiempos de aumento del antisemitismo, pero sostiene que las piedras conmemorativas ofrecen un atisbo de esperanza.
“Espero que estos Stolpersteine todavía hagan que algunas personas se detengan a reflexionar”, dijo.

China has ordered companies to disregard U.S. sanctions targeting Iranian oil, forcing a direct test of Washington’s ability to enforce its crackdown on Iran.
A new directive, issued through China’s Commerce Ministry Sunday, invokes a 2021 «blocking statute» that prohibits firms from complying with foreign sanctions deemed illegitimate. The order applies to several Chinese refiners accused by the United States of purchasing Iranian crude, including major independent processors known as «teapot» refineries.
The move represents a shift from years of opaque workarounds to more explicit state-backed resistance, as Beijing signals it will not cooperate with U.S. efforts to cut off a key source of revenue for Iran.

«This is unprecedented. It’s a major escalation in terms of China’s response to U.S. economic statecraft. It is a measure of defiance by Beijing,» said Max Meizlish, a senior research analyst at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies.
The escalation comes as the Trump administration intensifies its sanctions campaign, targeting Chinese refiners and warning financial institutions they could face penalties for facilitating oil transactions between Iran and China.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has accused Beijing of effectively financing Iran’s military activity through its oil purchases, arguing that Chinese demand is sustaining Tehran’s economy.
«China, let’s see them step up with some diplomacy and get the Iranians to open the strait,» Bessent said in a Fox News interview Monday.
«Iran is the largest state sponsor of terrorism … China has been buying 90 percent of their energy, so they are funding the largest state sponsor of terrorism,» he added.
China remains the primary destination for Iranian crude, with much of the country’s sanctioned oil exports flowing to Chinese refiners despite mounting U.S. pressure.
«It’s putting firms in China in the position where they either comply with the CCP order or the U.S. order and either way there could be consequences,» Meizlish said.

The issue is expected to be a major point of contention at an upcoming meeting between President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
At the same time, diplomacy is accelerating.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in Beijing Wednesday for talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, underscoring China’s growing role as both Iran’s primary oil customer and a key diplomatic interlocutor.
Despite mounting sanctions and a U.S. naval blockade aimed at restricting Iran’s oil exports, shipments have continued through increasingly opaque maritime networks. Data from maritime intelligence firm Windward shows a surge in vessels operating without tracking signals, with the majority of ships in the Strait of Hormuz recently going «dark,» making enforcement significantly more difficult.

Windward analysts also identified continued covert loading activity at Iran’s main export hub at Kharg Island, including large crude carriers operating without tracking signals despite heightened enforcement pressure.
«I don’t expect this is going to necessarily change much by way of how China has helped facilitate Iranian sanctions evasion,» Meizlish said.
Those flows have largely been sustained by demand from Chinese refiners, particularly smaller independent operators that often operate outside the U.S. financial system and are more insulated from sanctions pressure.
«This is really a clear attempt by Beijing to put the ball back in the U.S.’s court and see if it’s going to actually act,» Meizlish added.

Beijing’s decision to formally instruct companies not to comply with U.S. sanctions adds a new layer of risk for global firms. The blocking statute allows Chinese companies to seek damages in domestic courts from banks, insurers, or shipping companies that cut ties in order to comply with U.S. measures.
Analysts say the move could force multinational firms into a difficult position, weighing access to the Chinese market against the risk of being cut off from the U.S. financial system.

«There’s no more important enabler to Iran than China,» Meizlish said.
The standoff highlights a broader challenge for Washington: while sanctions remain a central tool of U.S. foreign policy, enforcing them against major economies like China, especially when transactions can be conducted outside the dollar system, is far more difficult.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio previewed a high-profile trip to Rome from the White House briefing room Tuesday, delivering sharp warnings to Iran and flashing easy command of the podium that drew praise from conservative allies online.
«The trip is really not tied to anything other than the fact that it would be normal for us to engage, and other secretaries of State have done that in the past,» Rubio said at the White House press conference on Tuesday of his trip to Italy.
The briefing came two days before Rubio is set to visit the Vatican and Italy for meetings amid heightened tensions between President Donald Trump, Pope Leo and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni over the U.S.-Iran conflict. Rubio used the briefing to defend the administration’s posture toward Tehran, downplay the timing of the Italy visit and signal that Washington is not backing off its pressure campaign.

«The message to Iran … these guys are facing real catastrophic destruction to their economy, generational destruction to their economy, generational destruction to the wealth of their country imposed on themselves by the actions that they’re taking,» said Rubio of Iran on Tuesday.
«They should check themselves before they wreck themselves in the direction that they’re going,» Rubio quipped, referencing Ice Cube’s rap song, «Check Yo Self.»
Rubio, a Catholic, is expected to meet with Pope Leo on Thursday morning, at a time when the pontiff has criticized the Trump administration’s Middle East peacemaking efforts.

Trump told reporters on Wednesday in the Oval Office he only has one message for the Pope.
«I can tell you this, that as far as the Pope is concerned, and it’s very simple. Whether I make him happy or I don’t make him happy, Iran can not have a nuclear weapon. And he seemed to be saying that they can. And I say they cannot, because if that happened, the entire world would be hostage. And we’re not going to let that happen,» he said.
