Trump jolts immigration hawks with surprising defense of Chinese students in USA

President Donald Trump split with immigration hawks by defending Chinese students in the U.S. while also softening on Chinese-owned farmland — creating friction inside MAGA and unexpected overlap with moderate Democrats.
Fox News’ Sean Hannity asked Trump in a recent interview from Beijing about concerns surrounding Chinese nationals attending school in the U.S. and China-linked entities purchasing farmland, including in sensitive areas like near a North Dakota military base that raised eyebrows earlier this decade.
Republicans have long warned that Chinese student visa programs could expose U.S. research and state secrets to the Chinese Communist Party, while GOP officials like Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Nebraska Sen. Deb Fischer have pushed for tougher restrictions on Chinese ownership of American farmland.
«It’s not that I love it. You want to see farm prices drop; you want to see farmers lose a lot of money just take that out of the market. But they’ve had a lot of land for a long time. Obama did nothing about it,» Trump said.

Trump also defended allowing Chinese students to study in the U.S., calling them «good students» and arguing that banning them would unnecessarily inflame tensions with Beijing.
«I frankly think that it’s good that people come from other countries and they learn our culture and many of them want to stay here,» Trump said, while admitting that it «doesn’t sound like a very conservative position – and I’m a conservative… commonsense guy. I think MAGA is ‘common sense,’» he said.
The comments triggered backlash from the right wing of the MAGA movement, with former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene disputing, «No — that’s not commonsense.»
«Trump says it’s insulting to tell China their students can’t go to our universities, imagine being an American student and receiving a rejection letter while 500,000 Chinese students get in,» Greene said, according to the left-wing New Republic. «And no – it’s not OK for China to buy our farmland.»
Some Democrats, however, appeared heartened by Trump’s more moderate stance on a major sticking point in the immigration field.
Fox News Digital reached out to top Democrats on the moderate New Democrat Coalition’s Border Security Working Group.
Chairman Gabe Vasquez of New Mexico told Fox News Digital that while he disagrees with Trump «on a lot» regarding immigration enforcement, he will continue to support efforts to bring new blood into the American economy.
«I have long supported building America’s workforce by encouraging the best and brightest across the world to come study in the U.S. and build their careers and families here,» said Vasquez.
«Congress should expand more legal pathways for students to stay here and start businesses, grow the American economy, and help our country fill critical needs in key industries like healthcare, manufacturing, quantum AI and engineering.»
A Vasquez spokesperson added that the lawmaker, however, agrees with conservatives on one point where Trump differed — that Chinese nationals should not be permitted to purchase U.S. farmland.
«Food security is national security,» the spokesperson said.
Speaking to Hannity, Trump added: «I could tell [Xi], I don’t want any students, it’s a very insulting thing to say to a country. They would then immediately go out and start building universities all over China.»
Trump argued that without the influx of Chinese students, middling and lower-tier universities would begin dying on the vine financially.
Lora Ries, former counsel for the House Judiciary Committee’s immigration subcommittee and a 30-year policy expert now with the Heritage Foundation, told Fox News Digital that universities have grown too dependent on foreign students because they often pay «full freight» — and made the case for scrutinizing the education system rather than keeping it propped up with foreign tuition.

«It is no longer a level playing field for American students to get into these universities. We also know many of these universities are producing degrees that don’t have a great return on investment: gender studies, et cetera. So why on earth do we want to keep universities that depend on those sorts of degrees afloat?» Ries said.
«We shouldn’t justify continuing to bring in high levels of foreign students to keep so many universities in business when the Big-Ed model is absolutely upside-down.»
According to Ries, Chinese and other foreign student blocs exacerbate the difficulty American students face getting into colleges — while native students are also not finding meaningful jobs after graduation.
Ries said the issue is «right up Trump’s alley,» but not in the way the president posited on «Hannity.» She said Trump could shake up «Big-Ed» by incentivizing quality degrees and disincentivizing ones that leave American graduates occupationally stranded.

When it comes to the adage about jobs Americans supposedly won’t do, she pointed to the medical field, which has seen an influx of foreign students.
«You can’t say medicine is a job that Americans won’t do, so what’s going on?» she said.
She also noted that Chinese nationals cannot come to live in America without the knowledge of — and often information-sharing with — the CCP, which itself poses a risk.
«Also, Chairman Xi can say, ‘Well, America is in decline,’ as he just did in this summit.»
When asked for comment, a White House spokesperson directed Fox News Digital to the president’s remarks to Hannity.

Trump’s comments set up a new potential divergence between presidential policy and conservative politics among some of his current and former most ardent supporters, including Greene.
It also, however, potentially opens up a rare immigration dialogue with Democrats like Vasquez and his coalition of moderates, who have been trying to advance their own fixes to the broken system.

A Texas congresswoman is leading the voice of online activists enraged over the guilty verdict in Karmelo Anthony’s murder trial, and is spreading outright lies and racially inflammatory rhetoric after the 19-year-old was sentenced to 35 years in prison for stabbing Austin Metcalf to death.
Rep. Jasmine Crockett, a rare radical Democrat elected in deep red Texas, took to her podcast after Tuesday’s verdict to make false claims about the trial and its jury as she continues to stir up racial hatred.
«I’m not necessarily convinced — not that I could tell you the name of one person on this jury — that we had 12 impartial White folk out of Collin County sitting on a jury for this young black man,» she said, exhibiting her empathy for the convicted murderer.
Her claim about the jury is patently false.

Sources close to the trial confirmed to Fox News Digital that the jury was not made up only of white people, despite Crockett’s claim, which has been parroted by activists online.
Of the 12 jurors, three were racial minorities, including Asian and Indian, eight were women and four were men. They confirmed that of the 18 total jurors, including alternates, six were minorities.

The jury in the trial, which spanned nine days in a Collin County, Texas, courtroom this month, found that Anthony intentionally stabbed Metcalf, then 18, to death on April 2, 2025.
The murder took place after Anthony entered the Memorial High School track team’s tent at a meet in Frisco, and refused 15 times to leave when asked. Witnesses testified that Metcalf lightly shoved Anthony in an attempt to remove him from the tent, after which the teen reached into his bag, pulled out a knife, and stabbed Metcalf in the chest.
The victim bled to death in front of his twin brother and teammates, many of whom testified at the trial.

Crockett surmised the jury likely convicted Anthony because residents of Collin County are upset that, «so many black folk are moving up there in the first place.»

The congresswoman, who will not retain her seat in the House after redistricting in Texas pushed her district red, bizarrely compared black women in America to the victim’s family.
«Black women, especially black women who have black male children, live in fear and agony every single day,» she lamented. «A fear and agony that I promise you the Metcalfs probably had never spend a day living that way.»
That comment was branded as «psychotic» by White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy and Homeland Security Advisor Stephen Miller on X.

Crockett, an attorney, also claimed that the knife Anthony used to kill Metcalf was not a deadly weapon, and downplayed its size.
Activists outside the courthouse sounded off after the verdict was handed down.
Dominique Alexander, a local Black Lives Matter activist who has been involved with the Anthony family since Karmelo’s arrest, slammed injected racial rhetoric into the conversation.

«What this process did is show that black lives do not matter in Collin County,» he said. «This trial showed that it put emotions over the law. After Trayvon Martin and so many countless names, it has shown us that Black life is not safe in Collin County.»
Martin was killed by George Zimmerman in Sanford, Florida, in 2012. A jury in that case found that Zimmerman acted in self-defense.
Alexander also claimed without evidence that the judge in the case «interfered in this process,» and repeated the false claim that the jury was «all white.»

Bree Newsome, an online far-leftist, insisted that race was a factor in the case.

«Karmelo Anthony would be treated totally different by the legal system were he a white boy killing a black boy,» she said. «That’s the whole point. That’s what matters. Stop pretending there’s anything Black people can do in our behavior to prevent racism. Racism defines the entire system.»
Crockett’s office did not return Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

Canadá impulsa una ley para prohibir las cuentas en redes sociales a menores de 16 años
El gobierno de Canadá presentó el miércoles un proyecto de ley que podría prohibir que los menores de 16 años tengan cuentas en redes sociales, salvo que las empresas demuestren que sus plataformas cuentan con suficientes medidas de seguridad. Las autoridades canadienses señalaron que las redes sociales podrían obtener una exención si logran acreditar la protección adecuada para los menores.
“Les estamos fallando a nuestros hijos. ¡Ya basta!”, declaró Marc Miller, ministro de Cultura de Canadá. “Necesitamos que existan medidas básicas de protección”, insistió el funcionario, al presentar la iniciativa que forma parte de un esfuerzo global creciente para reforzar la seguridad en línea para los menores de edad.
La legislación aborda siete tipos de contenido perjudicial, entre ellos material que incita a autolesiones, fomenta la violencia y el odio, o difunde imágenes íntimas no consentidas. El texto prevé la creación de la Comisión de Seguridad Digital de Canadá, nuevo organismo regulador encargado de aplicar la normativa. Miller indicó que el establecimiento de esta entidad podría llevar hasta 18 meses.
Según el ministro, las plataformas deberán demostrar que son seguras y estarán obligadas a implementar sistemas de verificación de edad. Las redes que ofrecen contenido para adultos no podrán recibir exención alguna.
“Las plataformas de redes sociales y los chatbots de IA están diseñados para captar la atención. No favorecen un desarrollo infantil saludable y se han convertido en una fuente de ansiedad, aislamiento, depresión y otros problemas de salud mental para muchos jóvenes canadienses”, argumentó Miller.
La normativa también contempla regular a las empresas que gestionan chatbots de inteligencia artificial, imponiendo obligaciones de actuación responsable, como la aplicación de protocolos de intervención en crisis.
El gobierno canadiense observó los modelos de países como Australia, que desde la entrada en vigor de una ley similar revocó el acceso a cerca de 4,7 millones de cuentas pertenecientes a menores de edad, según las autoridades de ese país. La experiencia australiana, que generó debate sobre privacidad, seguridad infantil y salud mental, servirá de referencia para la aplicación en Canadá.
La directora ejecutiva del Centro Canadiense para la Protección Infantil, Lianna McDonald, respaldó la medida y advirtió que la extorsión sexual en redes sociales ha aumentado drásticamente. Otros países como Brasil e Indonesia también han anunciado restricciones similares, mientras que Reino Unido, Francia, España, Dinamarca, Tailandia y Corea del Sur debaten propuestas en la misma línea.

OpenAI no respondió de inmediato a la solicitud de comentarios sobre el caso.
Un portavoz de Google, empresa propietaria de YouTube, declaró que la compañía está comprometida a colaborar con el gobierno federal para establecer estándares de seguridad más elevados en todas las plataformas, permitiendo a los padres contar con la confianza y el control necesarios para elegir experiencias en línea más seguras para sus hijos.
Por su parte, un portavoz de Meta —propietaria de Facebook e Instagram— señaló: “Al igual que los legisladores, queremos experiencias en línea seguras y positivas para los jóvenes, y estamos analizando los detalles de la Ley de Seguridad Digital”.

Razón y fe, ¿un choque inevitable, o una alianza necesaria entre conceptos que tienden a excluirse mutuamente? Ese fue el eje del extraordinario debate que protagonizaron Josep Ratzinger y Jürgen Habermas en 2004. El filósofo más influyente de nuestro tiempo, como garante de la razón secular, y al otro lado, la razón teológica que defendía el gran teórico de la teología, convertido poco después en Papa. Y así, en la sala noble de la Academia Católica de Baviera volvía a escenificarse el pulso que fluctuaba desde la Ilustración, responsable de la expulsión de la fe, sustituida por la razón como eje del pensamiento. Pero lejos de protagonizar un pulso frontal, ambos pensadores llegaron a una especie de contrato que Ratzinger resumió en una idea luminosa: la mutua purificación.
En síntesis, ante el Estado autosuficiente, basado en el derecho y la autorregulación democrática que defendía Habermas, Ratzinger le recordaba que cuando la razón se cierra en ella misma engendra monstruos como el totalitarismo. Si Ratzinger argumentaba que la religión puede aportar el grosor moral que la sociedad moderna está perdiendo, Habermas le recordaba que la religión también engendra monstruos, como el fanatismo. Reconocidos los monstruos de ambas razones, la secular y la teológica, la conclusión resultó grandiosa: razón y fe necesitaban escucharse y respetarse. Es decir, se necesitaban mutuamente porque la ciencia no puede dar respuesta a todas las necesidades morales del ser humano, ni la fe tiene respuesta para los enigmas científicos. De ahí surgió el concepto que Ratzinger planteó y Habermas asumió: la fe y la razón debían establecer un diálogo sanador porque pueden actuar como “purificadoras mutuas”: la razón evita el fanatismo y el fundamentalismo religioso, y la fe evita que la razón pierda la brújula moral y no se aleje de los valores humanos.
Ese contrato de entendimiento conllevaba deberes: los laicos debían dejar de percibir a la religión como una irracionalidad, y entender que la razón religiosa preserva verdades morales, que la ciencia no sabe precisar; y los creyentes, debían aceptar que era necesario adecuar sus creencias religiosas a los preceptos legales y que la fe no podía imponerse por “razón de Dios”. De este ‘contrato’ entre razón y fe saldría la sociedad postsecular, que aceptaba que la religión es una fuerza viva que la política no puede ignorar.
Veintidós años después, un nuevo Pontífice, León XIV, parece recoger el pulso que los dos grandes pensadores legaron a la sociedad. A diferencia del papa Francisco, cuyo perfil peronista lo llevó a menudo a la tentación política (es decir, al activismo político, más allá del mensaje evangélico), y a la práctica de un cierto populismo, Prevost da muestras de un perfil intelectual más profundo. Su encíclica Magnifica Humanitas es una reflexión de fondo que reclama el retorno al humanismo frente a lo que él llama la “deshumanización tecnológica”: la dignidad humana atacada no solo por la injusticia social, o los diversos males del mundo, sino también por el “tecnofascismo” que sitúa a los seres humanos bajo el control de algoritmos corporativos y ejerce un nuevo colonialismo, el digital. Desde esta perspectiva, alza la voz en favor de la educación como garante del pensamiento, y del arte como guardián de la empatía y la sensibilidad. Lo humano contra lo artificial.
¿Es la inteligencia artificial el nuevo “monstruo” que ha creado la razón?, como parece sugerir Prevost, ¿es la fe, la brújula moral que puede contenerlo?, ¿o es el refugio tramposo para huir del miedo? Lo cierto es que, dos décadas después del debate de Habermas y Ratzinger, los “monstruos” de ambas razones han crecido exponencialmente. Por un lado, el fundamentalismo religioso ha aumentado, inspirado por el miedo y por el vacío de una sociedad sumida en el relativismo moral. Por el otro lado, “la sequedad moral” (según el término que usó Habermas) de nuestra sociedad ha alimentado las posiciones ideológicas más extremas y ha sustituido los debates y las ideas por las pancartas y las consignas, hasta el punto de que ser un librepensador, en la época dorada de las falsedades virales, se ha convertido en un anatema. Son tiempos de pensamientos fast food y dogmas ideológicos (los monstruos de la razón), y de fanatismos religiosos (los monstruos de la fe), y ni unos ni otros dan sentido a la razón secular y a la teológica: al contrario, las niegan. En ese tiempo convulso, la defensa de la “purificación mutua” entre la razón y la fe resulta más urgente que nunca. Lo dijo Ratzinger en una bella frase: “La razón no se salvará sin la fe; pero la fe sin la razón no será humana”. Prevost parece ir en esa dirección.
