La diplomacia europea repite desde hace más de un mes que la guerra de Estados Unidos e Israel contra Irán “no es nuestra guerra”, pero entiende que le corresponderá jugar un papel en el post-conflicto si de las negociaciones en Islamabad entre funcionarios estadounidenses e israelíes sale algún acuerdo de paz que detenga el enfrentamiento entre ellos y los ataques de Israel en Líbano.

Europa no va a enviar por ahora ninguna misión naval para ayudar a Estados Unidos a mantener abierto el Estrecho de Ormuz, que parece ser el principal y casi único objetivo estadounidense en una guerra que nunca tuvo un objetivo claro. Ese “no es nuestra guerra” se aplica así, pero eso cambiaría, cuentan fuentes diplomáticas europeas, si llegara ese acuerdo de paz.

Los europeos no pueden dar la espalda a un conflicto que les afecta económicamente. Sobre todo porque entienden que la Administración estadounidense es demasiado voluble en sus objetivos y decisiones. Un diplomático del bloque aseguró este martes a Clarín: “Si hay una misión naval europea no será en ningún caso por exigencia de Estados Unidos ni para ayudar a Estados Unidos, sino porque nos conviene a nosotros que la región recupere una cierta estabilidad”.

Los europeos empiezan a preparar diplomáticamente los siguientes movimientos. El presidente del Consejo Europeo, el ex primer ministro socialista portugués António Costa, que representa a los gobiernos del bloque, está este martes y miércoles en la región. Costa, que va sin anuncios y sólo para consultas, tiene citas en Emiratos Árabes Unidos, en Arabia Saudita y en Qatar.

La ‘canciller’ del bloque, la ex primera ministra liberal estonia Kaja Kallas, está esta semana en Nueva York, donde el lunes a la noche habló ante el Consejo de Seguridad de Naciones Unidas para anunciar la necesidad de formar, cuando haya un acuerdo de paz, “una fuerte coalición internacional sobre la seguridad marítima”.

Las fuentes consultadas en Bruselas explican que la idea, si se dan las condiciones (entre otras, que tanto Irán como Estados Unidos acepten esa misión) es que algunos países europeos, ayudados por otros como Australia, Reino Unido, Japón, Corea del Sur o China, formen un grupo naval de tamaño suficiente para garantizar la seguridad desde el Estrecho de Ormuz hasta el de Bab el Mandeb (en español significa “puerta de las lágrimas” o “puerta del dolor”), en la entrada del Índico al Mar Rojo y puerta del Canal de Suez.

Por parte europea participarían los países que se mostraran voluntarios, pero todas las fuentes señalan a Francia, Alemania, Italia, España y Países Bajos.

Los europeos están también intentando ayudar por vías diplomáticas. Varios gobiernos, como el alemán y el francés, hablan con Teherán. España incluso reabrió su embajada en la capital iraní y mantiene contactos diplomáticos entre cancilleres. Costa lleva al Golfo Pérsico un “mensaje de solidaridad de la Unión Europea con los países de la región del Golfo y el compromiso de la Unión de contribuir a la desescalada y apoyar los esfuerzos diplomáticos”.

La diplomacia europea cree que no hay solución militar y que Estados Unidos se metió en una trampa de la que ahora tiene una oportunidad de salir gracias a estas negociaciones. “Aunque todo lo que consiga (asegura un diplomático) sea volver a la situación anterior a la guerra y Donald Trump anuncie eso como una victoria”. En Bruselas nadie cree que al presidente estadounidense le interese volver a hacer rugir los cañones cuando se le ha dado ahora una posibilidad de salir de esa trampa.

Costa repite ese mensaje de forma pública y en lenguaje diplomático: “Una paz duradera solo puede alcanzarse a través de la negociación y la diplomacia, principalmente lideradas por aquellos que operan en la región”.

Kallas dijo al Consejo de Seguridad lo que puertas adentro repiten los dirigentes europeos, que el alto el fuego “está en un equilibrio precario, pero ofrece una oportunidad más necesaria que nunca para negociar”.

Kallas aprovechó la visita para proponer una reforma que desbloquee el funcionamiento del Consejo de Seguridad de Naciones Unidas, inútil muchas veces porque las cinco potencias con asiento permanente (Estados Unidos, Rusia, China, Reino Unido y Francia) tienen derecho de veto. Kallas asegura que en caso de veto, las decisiones deberían pasar a la Asamblea General.

A former student injured at least 16 people Tuesday after opening fire with a shotgun inside a high school in Turkey before turning the weapon on himself, officials said. 

The 18-year-old who targeted the vocational high school in Siverek, located in southeastern Turkey, took his own life with the shotgun after he was «cornered by police,» Gov. Hasan Sildak said. 

Video taken at the scene showed students sprinting out of a building as law enforcement and first responders arrived. 

The attack left 10 students, four teachers, a school canteen employee and a police officer hurt, according to Sildak, who added that five of the teachers and students were transferred to a hospital in the provincial capital because their conditions were more serious.

The motive for the shooting was unclear. The attacker did not have a criminal record, Sildak said.  

The school had been declared safe and no permanent police officer was assigned to protect it, he added, calling the shooting an «isolated incident.» 

Sildak told NTV that the attacker started firing indiscriminately, beginning in the school yard before entering the building, Reuters reported.

One student told the state-run Anadolu Agency that he and a friend jumped out of their classroom window to flee the gunman. 

«He suddenly entered the classroom and fired. He fired four or five times. Two people were hit. He then went into the next classroom,» Anadolu quoted Omer Furkan Sayar as saying. «We first threw ourselves to the ground and then two of us jumped out of the window.» 

«He didn’t say anything, he entered and started to shoot directly,» Sayar added.

«The individual was cornered inside the building through police intervention and died after shooting himself,» Sildak told reporters, adding that a «comprehensive» investigation into the shooting would be carried out.

The House Judiciary Committee released internal Border Patrol documents on Tuesday, showing that a Venezuelan migrant now charged in the killing of Loyola University student Sheridan Gorman was flagged as a flight risk and had no valid asylum claim before being released into the U.S. in 2023.

Jose Medina-Medina, 25, is accused of fatally shooting 18-year-old Gorman in Chicago in March.

Fox News Digital previously reported that Medina-Medina, an illegal immigrant from Venezuela, was apprehended at the southern border in 2023 and later released into the country under the Biden administration.

In a post on X, House Judiciary Republicans said the documents show officials released a migrant they described as dangerous despite warning signs.

Additional records state the subject had no valid U.S. address or identification and was unable to provide a verifiable point of contact.

The documents also detail the circumstances of Medina-Medina’s apprehension at the border.

«A Border Patrol Agent encountered subject in the El Paso Border Patrol Sector area of responsibility,» the document read. «A Border Patrol Agent determined this subject had unlawfully entered the United States from Mexico, at a time and place other than as designated by the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security of the United States.

«After determining that the subject was an undocumented migrant who illegally entered the United States, the subject was arrested and transported to the Central Processing Center (CPC) in El Paso, Texas for further processing using the [redacted] Systems,» the document continued. «The subject was asked and responded that they do not fear harm or persecution should they be returned to their native country.»

Despite those findings, the documents show he was processed for a Notice to Appear and released on recognizance «due to lack of space,» under the Immigration and Nationality Act.

Federal prosecutors on April 2 charged Medina-Medina with illegally possessing a firearm, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. In addition to the federal charge, he faces state-level charges including murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault and illegal possession of a weapon.

Prosecutors said Gorman was with friends at a Rogers Park pier in the early morning hours of March 19 when she spotted Medina-Medina near a lighthouse and warned others. Authorities said Medina-Medina then chased the group and shot Gorman in the upper back as they fled.

In a statement after charges were filed, the Gorman family said, «Sheridan was a real person—she had a future, a family, and a life full of promise.»
