La creciente disputa entre el Papa y el gobierno estadounidense por la guerra en Medio Oriente aleja a Giorgia Meloni de Donald Trump
Durante años, la primera ministra de Italia, Giorgia Meloni, gozó de influencia como la líder de derecha que podía tender un puente entre Europa y el presidente Donald Trump.
Esta semana, sin embargo, parece haber decidido que Trump es un puente demasiado lejano.
Tras sufrir importantes reveses políticos por su asociación con el presidente de Estados Unidos, quien es profundamente impopular en Italia y a quien se considera el causante del aumento de los precios de la gasolina, Meloni aprovechó la oportunidad para desvincularse de una relación que se había vuelto venenosa a nivel nacional e internacional. Trump, claramente despechado, arremetió contra Meloni, diciendo en una entrevista con un periódico italiano el martes que no había hablado con ella “en mucho tiempo”, que estaba enfadado por su falta de participación en la guerra de Irán y que estaba “escandalizado por ella”, añadiendo “pensé que era valiente, pero me equivoqué”. Respondió a su crítica espetándole que “la inaceptable es ella”. El miércoles, añadió en una entrevista televisiva que con Italia “no tenemos la misma relación”.
La disputa parecía ser el final, o al menos un punto bajo, de la que quizá sea la relación más especial de Trump en Europa.
También es otro momento notable en la carrera de Meloni, quien a lo largo de décadas ha pasado de adolescente activista neofascista a líder de un partido de extrema derecha, antes de emerger finalmente como una conservadora pragmática y la primera mujer a cargo del puesto político más alto en Italia.
Cuando Trump volvió al poder el año pasado, muchos miembros de la clase dirigente europea temieron que la arrastrara hacia los límites de la extrema derecha. En lugar de ello, sugieren los analistas, Trump en realidad podría haberla empujado más hacia la corriente dominante europea.
“En la relación con Trump, ella pensó originalmente que él podía ser un recurso, y quizá lo fue, porque podía aparecer como la persona que podía mediar entre el resto de Europa y Trump”, dijo Roberto D’Alimonte, profesor emérito de ciencias políticas de la Universidad de Florencia. “Pero poco a poco se ha convertido en un lastre. Creo que ella aprovechó lo que dijo sobre el Papa para hacer una declaración firme y tomar distancia. No podía hacer otra cosa”.
Al principio, la conexión de Meloni con Trump tenía visos de ser una bonita amistad.
En 2018, cuando aún era una figura marginal en busca de oxígeno en el abarrotado espacio populista de Italia, Meloni invitó al ex principal asesor de Trump, Stephen K. Bannon, a ser el invitado de honor de su conferencia política, bautizada con el nombre de un héroe de La historia sin fin. Al año siguiente, se autodenominó con orgullo “la única italiana” invitada a hablar en la Conferencia de Acción Política Conservadora en Washington. Habló el mismo día que Trump, y desde su asiento entre el público uso las redes sociales para llenarlo de elogios por sus comentarios incluso mientras él los pronunciaba.
En 2022, dijo en una entrevista con The New York Times: “Trump hizo algunas cosas muy buenas cuando era presidente. Por ejemplo, en política exterior, no tuvimos problemas. No hubo guerras”.
Años después, cuando ambos estaban en la cima del poder, parecían congeniar.
“No te importa que te llamen guapa, ¿verdad?”, le dijo Trump a Meloni en una cumbre en Egipto el pasado octubre. “Lo eres”.
Pese a las muestras públicas de afecto, a lo largo de su segundo mandato, Trump ha presionado cada vez más a Meloni, junto con otros aliados europeos, para que aumente el gasto militar de Italia y acepte condiciones comerciales desfavorables.
Ella mostró signos de resistencia. El pasado abril, mientras Trump amenazaba con aumentar los aranceles, dijo: “creo que la elección de Estados Unidos es una elección equivocada”, incluso mientras advertía contra los aranceles de represalia de Europa.
Entonces las cosas empezaron a ponerse tensas. En enero, cuando Trump empezó a entretener cada vez más la idea de tomar Groenlandia, Meloni dijo: “No creo en la idea de que Estados Unidos lance una acción militar sobre Groenlandia, con la que no estaría de acuerdo”. Días después, cuando Trump se retractó de sus amenazas, ella habló como alguien que lo entendía, afirmando que “no estaba sorprendida, para ser sincera”.
Pero cuando Trump decidió atacar Irán, no avisó a Meloni. Para su humillación, su ministro de Defensa estaba de vacaciones en Dubai, Emiratos Árabes Unidos, en ese momento, y tuvo que ser evacuado en un avión militar.
La guerra también provocó un aumento en los precios del gas y la electricidad en Italia. Meloni, una populista con un agudo sentido de las cuestiones de bolsillo, comprendió el peligro político, especialmente cuando los italianos se preparaban para votar en un referendo sobre un cambio judicial crucial que ella apoyaba.
A medida que las encuestas mostraban que Italia no apoyaba la guerra y que no le gustaba Trump, Meloni empezó a expresarse al respecto.
“Estoy preocupada, obviamente, porque sería estúpido creer que lo que ocurre incluso lejos de nuestras fronteras no nos involucra”, dijo el 2 de marzo, y añadió: “Estados Unidos e Israel decidieron atacar sin la participación de sus socios europeos”.
Días después, dejó claro que “no estamos en guerra y no queremos ir a la guerra”. Envió a Guido Crosetto, el ministro de Defensa que había sido abandonado en Dubai, para que fuera aún más contundente, diciendo que el ataque de Estados Unidos e Israel “se produjo ciertamente al margen de las normas del derecho internacional”. Luego añadió en un discurso ante el Parlamento que, dado que Estados Unidos tenía problemas de comunicación, no podía respaldar necesariamente la valoración estadounidense de que la intransigencia iraní había frustrado las negociaciones sobre un acuerdo.
Meloni también ha intentado distanciarse de Israel, hasta ahora un aliado clave. Esta semana, anunció que Italia no renovaría automáticamente su acuerdo de defensa con Israel “en vista de la situación actual”.
A pesar de todos sus esfuerzos por distanciarse de la guerra de Trump, de todos modos perdió estrepitosamente el referendo sobre el poder judicial, luego de que la votación se percibiera como un plebiscito sobre su propia popularidad. En un esfuerzo por ajustar cuentas con quienes creía que le habían hecho daño, despidió a un ministro y a ayudantes a los que consideraba responsables de la derrota.
Pero los analistas dijeron que la ruptura con Trump era lo que más importaría a los votantes italianos. Y el ataque de Trump al Papa le dio una oportunidad.
Ahora, según los expertos, Meloni tendrá que decidir si quiere seguir por su cuenta o buscar alianzas más estrechas con el establishment europeo al que criticó duramente durante su ascenso al poder.
Después de que un importante aliado europeo, el primer ministro húngaro Viktor Orbán, perdiera el poder el domingo, Meloni necesita nuevos amigos, sobre todo mientras se prepara para las elecciones en Italia previstas para el año que viene.
“Tendrá que acercarse a Europa”, dijo D’Alimonte. “Ahora está aislada”.
Por su parte, Trump se quejó de que no era la líder que creía conocer. “Es mucho más diferente”, dijo, “de lo que pensaba”.

Indonesian passenger ship carrying 240 people loses contact in Java Sea, search underway

A passenger ship carrying 240 people vanished from contact in the Java Sea on Sunday local time, triggering an urgent search as Indonesian crews raced to locate the vessel.
The Virgo Transport 8 was traveling from Surabaya, East Java, to Banjarmasin on the island of Borneo when communications with the ship were lost, the Associated Press reported, citing Indonesia’s Banjarmasin Search and Rescue Office.
Authorities said the vessel was last tracked roughly 92 miles from a pier in Banjarmasin, the capital of South Kalimantan province.

Search-and-rescue teams launched an operation after receiving a report that the ship had suffered a communications failure during the voyage, according to the AP.
Officials had not reported any deaths or injuries as of Sunday, and it was not immediately clear what caused the vessel to lose contact or whether weather conditions were affecting the search.

‘Trump-level’ smackdown earns Vance roaring praise as 2028 buzz builds at GOP convention

Republicans reached a consensus that Vice President JD Vance solidified his position as the presumptive 2028 presidential candidate with his «Trump-level» smackdown of a foreign flag-waving protester who disrupted his speech at the Republican National Convention.
Vance did not hesitate after a protester interrupted his primetime speech in Dallas on Thursday by waving the flags of the Palestinian Authority and Mexico. He recalled to those watching his speech on TV: «What the people at home missed is that we just had a protester interrupting us and waving the Mexican flag.»
«Well, my friend, if you love Mexico so much, get your a– over there. I’ll buy you the plane ticket,» the VP said, to which the crowd erupted into applause.
«JD Vance just MIC DROPPED a leftist heckler who interrupted him waving a Mexican flag…this place is DEAFENING,» conservative commentator Eric Daugherty wrote on X, adding, «TOTAL PANDEMONIUM.»

Popular conservative pundit Benny Johnson called Vance’s quick wit an «epic response.» President Donald Trump supporter and activist Scott Pressler similarly praised Vance for reacting «without missing a beat,» and called it «an iconic moment.»
«This was masterful. A Trump-level move from JD Vance,» wrote Overton, a conservative commentary and news account. «Vice President Vance perfectly handled a protestor waving a Mexican flag at the RNC in Dallas. Then he fired back with a savage one-liner that sent the American Airlines Center into absolute bedlam.»
The moment was capped off with a «USA!» chant from those in the crowd at the GOP Midterm Convention.
Students for Trump co-founder Ryan Fournier wrote, «JD Vance just absolute [sic] WIPED THE FLOOR with a leftist heckler who interrupted his rally waving a Mexican flag.»
«The crowd went completely WILD. Unbelievable energy,» wrote Fournier.

Commentator Brilyn Hollyhand put it simply, posting on X, «Yea JD for President after this.»
Vance recovered from the interruption quickly, telling the crowd, «Ladies and gentlemen, I had a whole speech written. But I think I’ve got to change it because we just discovered the symbol of the far left — an idiot waving … a Mexican flag at a protest when he should be waving the flag of the United States of America.»
«Now, we all know, of course, that as much as that person might wave around a foreign flag, he’d much rather live in Dallas, or in Cincinnati, or in any one of our great cities than Mexico,» President Donald Trump’s No. 2 continued. «But while we wave the American flag and fight for the American dream, we have to remind ourselves tonight that the good life that is the foundation of this country’s promise is not guaranteed.»

«Every generation of Americans has had to fight for these things when it’s our turn,» he went on.
«And this fall, the Democrats are running candidates who will tell your children what they’re allowed to say, how they’re allowed to live, and importantly, who they ought to hate, because that’s what the Democrat Party is about in 2026,» Vance continued. «It’s not about you, it’s about foreign fraudsters, and it’s about who they hate. And we got to send their a–es back in November.»
Speculation has swirled over who will be the heir to Trump’s MAGA throne in 2028. The consensus so far among Republicans appears to be split between Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio — but a lot could change before the next presidential election.

House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Andrew Garbarino, R-N.Y., remembers exactly where he was when the World Trade Center was attacked on Sept. 11, 2001.

Twenty-five years later, Garbarino leads a congressional committee that oversees a Cabinet department created explicitly after the terror attack. He’s warning that Congress needs to change how it deals with potential threats to avoid another tragedy of that scale.
«Being chairman of the committee, being a New Yorker, it’s one of those things you focus on, and you want to make sure another 9/11 doesn’t happen, and doesn’t ever happen again. And that’s my goal. That’s my priority,» he said.

«That’s why 9/11 happened. 9/11 happened because our intelligence agencies, they were siloed, they were not sharing information. I don’t know if it was a complacency or whatever, but there were a lot of problems,» Garbarino said. «I don’t want to fall into that same complacency.»
Garbarino represents New York’s 2nd Congressional District, part of Long Island’s south shore. As a suburb of New York City, its residents are deeply attuned to that tragedy 25 years ago.

«We have people that lost loved ones that day that are still dealing with it 25 years later,» Garbarino said. «So the scar is still there.»
His district and others are also still dealing with illnesses stemming from that day, including first responders who bravely rushed to the collapsing twin towers.
«There are now more people that have died from 9/11-related illnesses than died on the actual day. So it’s a day that keeps taking people away from us,» Garbarino said.
«You have firemen who, 9/11 was their first call. They were 21, 22 years old. They’re now 47… And a lot of these, some of these cancers, they take a while to take hold, and they’re now just getting sick.»

Earlier this year, President Donald Trump signed legislation led by Garbarino and others to address a projected funding shortfall for the World Trade Center Health Program, which helps survivors pay for their medical treatment.
He said nearly all congressional districts across the country have at least one person participating in the program, a testament to how widespread the tragedy’s effects are.
«People moved out of New York, people who came from all over the country after 9/11 to help, they all went back home, they also got sick. So this does affect the entire country,» Garbarino said.
