Obama-era CIA Director John Brennan called for President Donald Trump to be removed from office, joining a growing list of Democrats who say Trump’s Truth Social posts threatening Iran were unlawful.

Brennan, who is currently under investigation by the Justice Department, appeared on MS NOW for an interview with Ali Velshi. He said that the 25th Amendment, which establishes the protocol to remove the president, «was written with Donald Trump in mind.»

«Allowing someone like this to continue to be the commander in chief and to control the tremendous capabilities of the U.S. military, including our nuclear weapons capability, which he seemed to allude to when he said he’s going to just eliminate a entire civilization,» Brennan said. «Again, we really are in very, very troubling times.»

More than 70 lawmakers are calling for the 25th Amendment to be invoked against Trump following a slew of threats he made on Truth Social toward Iran regarding reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

The president made his first threat on Easter Sunday, giving Iran a deadline of Tuesday, April 7, at 8 p.m. Hours before the deadline, Trump posted on Truth Social that «a whole civilization will die tonight.»

«I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will,» Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Right before the deadline, Trump announced that the United States and Iran had reached a two-week ceasefire agreement. But after negotiations in Pakistan this weekend, Trump announced on Truth Social Sunday that the U.S. Navy will begin to block all ships entering and exiting the Strait of Hormuz beginning Monday.

Since the start of the Iran war, Brennan has been publicly outspoken in his criticism of Trump’s handling of the conflict. He’s been a regular on MS NOW, suggesting a month ago that Trump is «flailing» and «clueless» about handling the war.

Notably, the Justice Department launched an investigation into Brennan in July 2025, stemming from allegations that Brennan improperly handled a 2017 Intelligence Community Assessment, which found that Russia was seeking to influence the 2016 presidential election in Trump’s favor. 

The 2017 Intelligence Community Assessment included the Steele dossier, a debunked collection of memos alleging Trump colluded with Russia, but Brennan testified before Congress that the document «was not in any way used as a basis for the Intelligence Community assessment that was done.» House Republicans alleged that Brennan had lied in his 2023 Judiciary Committee testimony by denying that the CIA used the Steele dossier in preparing the assessment. The DOJ investigation is ongoing. 

Lawyers for Brennan said they have been informed he is a target of the investigation but have not been told of any «legally justifiable basis for undertaking this investigation,» according to The Associated Press.

Brennan also previously pushed back on the allegations of wrongdoing, including claims from Trump and his allies that Brennan helped promote a «contrived narrative» that Russia interfered in the 2016 election to benefit Trump, which became central to the FBI’s Russia collusion investigation of Trump’s 2016 campaign. 

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, told Fox News that the DOJ probe is «heating up» last month in an appearance on «Hannity» and predicted that Brennan would soon face «accountability.»

Su ascenso se apoya tanto en su conocimiento interno del sistema del partido gobernante Fidesz como en una comunicación que combina cercanía, un claro discurso anticorrupción y una imagen moderna que contrasta con la del mandatario de 62 años.

Magyar se presenta como conservador, defensor de la familia, la nación y el cristianismo, aunque con una clara orientación europeísta y más abierto que Orbán.

Estilo juvenil

Ese perfil, modernizador en lo económico y conservador en lo social, desactivó las habituales críticas de Orbán a sus rivales, a quienes suele tildar de progresistas alejados de los valores tradicionales.

Al mismo tiempo, atrajo tanto el voto desencantado del propio oficialismo como el de una oposición liberal y progresista ansiosa de un cambio tras cuatro mandatos consecutivos de cuatro años del sistema Fidesz.

Su estilo juvenil y su hábil uso de las redes sociales conectó de forma especial con los más jóvenes, que, en muchos casos, solo tienen recuerdos de Orbán en el poder. La ruptura de Magyar con el oficialismo se produjo a raíz de un escándalo vinculado a un indulto a un condenado por encubrir delitos de pederastia.

Este episodio desencadenó renuncias de alto nivel, entre ellas la de la entonces presidenta, Katalin Novák, y también la de su exesposa, Judit Varga, entonces ministra de Justicia y con la que tiene tres hijos.

Tras abandonar Fidesz en febrero de 2024, Magyar lanzó su propio movimiento, que atrajo a muchos votantes descontentos. Para poder presentarse en las elecciones europeas y locales de 2024, asumió el liderazgo de un pequeño partido desconocido, el Tisza, que es el nombre del segundo río del país y la abreviatura de ‘Tisztelet és Szabadság’ (‘Respeto y Libertad’).

Primer éxito en las elecciones europeas

En las elecciones europeas, a pocos meses de aparecer, el partido logró casi el 30 % de los votos y siete escaños en la Eurocámara, donde se unió al Partido Popular Europeo (PPE).

Desde aquellas elecciones, la popularidad de Tisza no dejó de crecer.

A diferencia de otros líderes opositores en el pasado, Magyar nunca entró en cuestiones ideológicas divisivas, como la política hacia Ucrania, y se concentra en problemas concretos como la corrupción, el alto coste de vida y la mala situación de los servicios públicos, como los hospitales.

En algunos asuntos, como su posición contra la inmigración ilegal, su cercanía a las ideas de Orbán resulta clara.

Su rápido ascenso también generó interrogantes. Algunos lo acusan de oportunismo y populismo, al tiempo que su partido también cae en lo que critica a Orbán: un exceso de personalismo. La prensa lo tildó como el “candidato de teflón” ya que todos los ataques políticos de Orbán y su entorno le resbalan.

Normalizar las relaciones de Hungría con la UE

El mensaje más importante del líder opositor es el de poner fin al régimen “más corrupto” de Europa, que convirtió a Hungría en el país “más pobre” de la Unión Europea (UE).

Hungría tiene un crecimiento anémico desde 2022, así como una inflación muy elevada, a lo que se suma la congelación de miles de millones de euros en fondos europeos por parte de Bruselas debido a preocupaciones sobre el Estado de derecho.

Ante ese malestar, el discurso de Magyar centrado en “limpiar” las instituciones, recuperar los fondos europeos y reactivar la economía caló especialmente entre los jóvenes y las clases medias urbanas.

Su promesa estrella es una ofensiva anticorrupción que incluiría la entrada inmediata de Hungría en la Fiscalía Europea, con el objetivo de investigar el uso de fondos públicos por parte del Gobierno de Orbán y recuperar recursos desviados.

También se comprometió a desbloquear las ayudas europeas y a restablecer la confianza con las instituciones comunitarias, lo que supondría un giro respecto a la política de confrontación mantenida por Orbán. “Nuestra patria forma parte de la comunidad europea, la OTAN y de Occidente”, dijo Magyar en su último gran mitin de campaña.

Frente a la cercanía de Orbán con Moscú, prometió una victoria “que se verá también en el Kremlin”, en alusión a los vínculos del actual gobierno con Rusia.

JOHANNESBURG: A strategically important air base and port have been offered to the U.S. as a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz begins and Iran-backed threats target the key Red Sea chokepoint of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

Top U.S. military officials, including the Commander of U.S. Forces in Africa, Gen. Dagvin Anderson, recently visited facilities being offered in Somaliland. Somaliland is a pro-U.S. outpost, having broken away from war-torn Somalia in 1991.

Bab-el-Mandeb, which is Arabic for ‘gate of tears’, has become the main route for oil to ship out of the Middle East to Asia since the Strait of Hormuz was effectively closed.  Bloomberg News reported that Saudi Arabia has switched to shipping potentially up to seven million barrels of oil a day from its port at Yanbu on the Red Sea through the strait. It’s reported that up to 14% of the world’s shipping passes through the 16-mile-wide strait.

Enter the controversial offer to the U.S. of an air and naval base at Berbera in Somaliland. The official Republic of Somaliland site on X extolled Berbera’s virtues last month, boasting that it has «a deep water port along the artery connecting the Red Sea to the Indian Ocean», and «one of Africa’s longest runways, originally developed as a NASA emergency landing site.»

«Berbera obviously has huge strategic potential,» for sea and air operations, Edmund Fitton-Brown, a former U.K. ambassador to Yemen and a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD), told Fox News Digital.

The U.S. does have another Red Sea base in Djibouti, but Fitton-Brown told Fox News Digital the government there is increasingly uncomfortable with some of the Administration’s policies: «Djibouti becomes an increasingly reluctant, unwilling ally to the U.S. in helping enforce sanctions on the Houthis. Somaliland, which is almost equally well-placed to address issues on the western and southwestern coasts of Yemen, can help the U.S., Israel and the UAE combat the Houthis.»

The controversy comes over the question of U.S. recognition of Somaliland.

President Trump, in the Oval Office last August, told reporters, «We’re looking into that right now,» when asked about the recognition of Somaliland and the possible resettlement of Gazans there, adding, «We’re working on that right now, Somaliland.»

But this past week, a State Department spokesperson told Fox News Digital, «the United States continues to recognize the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia, which includes the territory of Somaliland.»

Last year Israel became the first country to recognize Somaliland.

TRUMP SEEKS WARSHIPS FROM OTHER COUNTRIES TO HELP SECURE STRAIT OF HORMUZ

Iran is pushing the Houthis to take action in the Red Sea. «Insecurity in other straits, including the Bab al-Mandab Strait and the Red Sea, is one of the options of the Resistance Front, and the situation will become much more complicated than it is today for the Americans,» the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)-linked Tasmin news agency warned on March 21.

Baraa Shaiban, an expert on the Houthis at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), says the recognition of Somaliland is problematic, as it «will upset the U.S. relationship with the Arab countries like Saudi Arabia and Egypt, many of which are U.S. allies. It would be unwise for the United States to upset its allies in the region just to gain access to Somaliland ports.»

A spokesperson for the U.S. military in Africa (AFRICOM), told Fox News Digital, «The U.S. is not seeking to establish new basing, as such actions do not align with the America First security framework articulated by the President and Secretary of War.»

While publicly both the use of bases and recognition of Somaliland are no-go areas, analysts say that with Somaliland offering the use of its bases without immediate recognition by the administration, the issue is perhaps privately not off the table.

And that could be why a recent video shared with Fox News Digital shows AFRICOM Commander Dagvin Anderson and a large group of senior military officials in Somaliland, where he met with its president and appearing to inspect the port in Berbera in November, just 5 months ago.

That’s not the only reported visit. Somaliland’s top diplomatic representative in Washington, Bashir Goth, told a recent Foreign Policy Research Institute debate, «The war in the Middle East has elevated Somaliland’s strategic importance,» Goth noted. » U.S. Military interest has been very strong. Every month, there has been a delegation from AFRICOM to Hargeisa. (The capital of Somaliland)».

Fox News Digital reached out to the Republic of Somaliland, but they declined to comment.
